Really enjoyed having a go at drawing this one.
I'm very new to trying art.
More often than not disappointed with my final picture.
    But fun doing them.
    Great video 👍

Hi Dave, that’s brilliant, well done for giving it a go. I only really started enjoying sketching once I stopped caring how they turned out. It goes against all our natural instincts to see the finished picture as irrelevant, but I find it really does boost the enjoyment. You’re enjoying doing them already by the sounds of things, so you’re on the right track! Cheers for watching, Donald.

      @@UrbanSketchy Hi Donald.
It took a while for the penny to drop that the finished picture wasn't important.
And I very nearly gave up out of general frustration.
      Especially with watercolour! 🤣

I think watercolour is deliberately designed to be infuriating, I’ve had many a sketch that ended up looking like it was painted by a toddler 😅

Thanks for adding mindfulness to this! I 100% know it works. And your voice is so calming and meditating too. Plus your words are wise and encouraging. Really nice video 🙏💓.

Oh that’s good to know it works, just something a bit different I thought I’d try. I’m a bit of a newcomer to mindfulness. Surprised but happy to hear you’re finding my voice calming, I think that’s a first for me 😊

Mindfulness definitely works but only if you work with it and let it happen. I used to do a lot of photography up to very recently. In the first covid lockdown, I was struggling with anxiety. Lockdown didn’t affect me too much as I am retired and mobility issues kept me from being out much anyway but suddenly, I felt more isolated than ever before even though I wasn’t. The constant covid figures on tv every night was really getting to me and I knew I had to take control. I decided to photograph the birds in my garden. I set up a naturalistic feeding area and bought myself a pop up tent hide equipped with a comfy chair. I would sit in this hide waiting for birds to appear on the feeders so I could take snaps of them.
Just sitting there I’m my little camouflaged tent with nothing to think of but the bird song, their antics as they fed and trying to remember to press the shutter button every now and again helped me so much to let the doom and gloom wash by me instead of catching me up in its current.
Paradoxically, I believe that many beginning artists would be better off if we did not have the internet. Sadly, good as the internet is at many things, it creates a ‘want it now’ attitude. I am very guilty of spending far more time watching videos on drawing than drawing itself. It is inevitable that I will compare my work to those polished pieces of art fed to me by CZcams. The paradox is that without it, I would never get to see people like yourself who’s videos are of great value and importance to beginners like myself.

Thanks for sharing, probably a lot of people were doing things like this during lockdown and not even realising they were doing mindfulness. I’ll never forget being in the garden and all you could hear was birdsong when usually you’d hear constant traffic, so surreal. Photography and sketching are quite similar in a lot of ways, I used to do photography myself until I got into this.
The internet is great for learning new hobbies and interests, I would never have discovered urban sketching without it. But I do agree, it is hard not to watch accomplished artists and wish you could do that.

Great comment, I agree on all. My biggest struggle has been with perfectionism all my life, and only lately, in my middle age something happened and I got the courage and motivation to start drawing and painting! I never had any fear with photographing and editing (I also worked as a photographer) but art (and music) was scary. Because I ”was not good at it”.
Now I am so happy to be bad and beginner, because how you develope fast is amazing. It`s not about the end result, it is about doing and finding joy in it.

Graham, I did a similar thing when lockdown came, we got a marquee and put it up near bird feeders, and I felt so calm watching them, it was great , and fun too. The marquee goes up in the summer now, we’ve just put it up, I’m looking forward to watching the birds.

This was great! I’ve just done this and it was so relaxing! It’s far from my best work, but I really enjoyed this! Your voice is so calming too. I’ll try this again. Brilliant. I’ve shared the results on my CZcams channel, do you have a channel?

Very glad to hear you gave this a go and got something positive out of it. It is relaxing isn’t it? I find I’m doing this more even without even thinking about it. When you ask if I have a channel, I’m not sure what you mean, isn’t this my channel? Maybe I’m misunderstanding, wouldn’t be the first time 😄 Cheers, Donald.

That makes more sense 😄 I do have an Instagram account registered but haven’t started using it, I don’t currently use any social media at all. I might start posting on Instagram at some point but just wanted to focus on growing the CZcams channel, it’s so time consuming in itself. I’ll see if I can find your sketch though 🙂
