  • The grim darkness of the 41st millennium is often characterized by moral grey areas and acts of terrible evil. its a universe where war is everything and every faction is wrapped up in a perpetual pursuit of violence. Yet there seems to be one faction that breaks this mold. one that ( on its surface) appears to value peace and diplomacy. But are the Tau as benevolent as they appear to be or is there something going on under the surface? lets talk about it.
This is my first attempt at a long form lore video. There is still an enormous amount to talk about when it comes to the tau, like their lack of warp presence or any of their named characters/ sphere expansions. my first few videos I publish will basically serve as practice for me. Long form content is a totally different beast compared to making shorts so I'm going to mess up here and there well I nail down my editing, scripting and all the various other intricacies that come with producing lore content.

You have to remember the warhammer has millions of galactic species that also want peace but the greater galactic races and civilizations are superpowers that grew to know only conflict as they war for control of the galaxy. The tau are a lesser great race that stepped on to the stage of giants. They have only fought normal wars based on the standards of lesser conflicts. To battle a super power of this galactic conflict has opened their eyes to the true horrors of what the galaxy is really like as lesser races are ignorant of this struggle and get annihilated when stepped on by these giants.

Tau are my favorite faction in 40k and it always amuses me how, much like a lot of the metaphors in 40k, they go right over the heads of the fans. Tau are criticized for not "belonging" in the 40k universe. As far as factions go, they're too "nice." They have some problematic elements, but the idea of appreciating peace, diplomacy, technology, and improving the quality of life of their citizens makes them the goodest guys of all in the 40k universe, which makes them seem not to mesh with the grimdark tones of the universe. But, that's the point. The Tau empire is tiny, being absolutely dwarfed by every other faction by orders of magnitude. So you've got this tiny little pocket of hope in a tiny little pocket of the galaxy that came too late to the game and is too small to ever meaningfully improve things in the Milky Way Galaxy. To play Tau is to recognize your own irrelevance in the 40k universe. The most you can hope for is that you never earn the attention of a single Ork Waaagh!, the full attention of a single Tyrannid hive fleet, or the attention of the Imperium of Man. Any one of these is the end of the Tau empire. The best part of all? If you leave the Tau lore alone and switch the tone to Noblebright, the Tau become the most evil faction in the universe.

Use their genius to create a world that benefits the few at the cost of the many.

The imperium uses a caste system too, you're pretty much born into your position in life though it is a social construct more than it is genetic. Humans tolerate a few instances of significant geneic drift where it is advantageous, Ogrins and Psykers for example. The imperium doesn't say you are rigidly moored into the station you are born into but they do very much practice it plus they will kill you even if you bend a knee to them.

@@guyeswanson7958eh, so do the tau. You have complete mobility within a caste and it's completely meritocratic. The imperium works with an insane amount of corruption, nepotism, inefficiency and bloat. Just how many insanely incompetent imperial officials are shown just in recent 40k?. The tau are immune to that bloat they don't have lineages and bloodlines, no one is getting promoted because he kissed some officer's ass. Even their castes are way less caste-like than the social classes of the imperium. An earth caste isn't a profession, it's a sub species. They lack the muscle and reflexes to be a fire warrior, or the light bones and agility of a water caste. Tau auxilia show no adherence to castes and social classes for example.

He was very sure that living under the Imperium or Orks was better because you got to be yourself and make your own choices. Which is bonkers because your choice is "suffer and die" or "suffer more and die" or "die right now to end your suffering. "
Like, the morality of empire, colonization, mental influence / mind control, and the caste system are obviously insidious and raise questions about what the ethereals are really up to. And it's 40k so you know there's some shady shit going down. But to say they are the most evil faction because they mentally manipulate their populace... Just a small note about the whole "mind control" thing, it comes from an old book on xeno-biology, where it's postulated that the Ethereals aren't really Tau but rather an artificial branch of evolution made by the Eldar, which is where the "blinding lights" thing came from when the first ethereals showed up, and it was pointed out that, the ethereals where at first literally twins, the first 2 ethereals where basically clones of each other, adding more credence to the idea that, they're not quite a natural product as the other Tau are.

Never heard about this before? I thought the blindings lights thing was relatively new lore so I'm curious to what old xenobook claimed this. It would be interesting though. The eldar, certainly drukhari, definitely have the tech to do this but whats the purpose? Eldar peak society was colorful with arts, pleasure and creative freedom as staples. Tau are strict, working and shun individualism.
What would the eldar gain from the tau? A threat to humanity?
A warp-free tech army that could rival the necrons?
Or maybe just create an empire that doesnt give in to emotions like the aeldari did. Starting a new era of the galaxy where the chaos gods have no power.

It's essentially; Defense, Construction, Diplomacy, and Transportation all unified to their ideal potential.
Humanity had slow growth due to their lack of unity overall, even in the 40k timeline humans aren't as much unified as they're mind melded/oppressed into submission.

So many videos just devolve into a hate-filled meme-fest, but this video really explored at what makes the T'au, at least to me, the most interesting faction in 40K. Most the factions are so 1-dimensional, but the T'au have this weird layer to them. Where you can recognise that their way of life isn't good, but it isn't' evil either, it almost feels necessary. The T'au are a small race in a big galaxy, they don't have access to ancient technologies, hell magics, or insurmountable numbers. They strive for the Greater Good, because without it, they'd surely perish.

At the end of the day I think you can some tau's morality in 40k like this: imperium fights to be the only ones left, tau fights so that nobody else has to. The caste system makes complete sense from a biology point with them since they are all different, and even more so when you know they don't enforce it on people that join them

To be honest I think they'd have much to gain by being more loose with the restrictions. I mean each caste or subspecies of t'au has unique characteristics and advantages but these under certain circumstances can be applied to different areas I think. Imagine an earth caste battle mechanic that can wipe up wacky but powerful contraptions in the heat of well...battle to aid his comrades. Imagine an air caste squadron that acts like gliding skirmishing units. Imagine water caste with their seemingly natural ability to pick up on other species' social quirks using that in dangerous espionage work.

I don't think caste was the right word, bc it's not economic, n bc of India that's what ppl think.

I mean im pretty sure even if you use Kroot, Kroot Shapers, Kroot Hounds, Kroot Warhawks, Krootoxes, and Greater Gnarlocs plus Vespids. I think even with all that they would not be able match the endless spam that humans and Orks and Tyranids can do

The way the Tau empire makes first contact and offers to help other worlds reminds me of a Stargate SG-1 episode. The Stargate team starts negotiations with an advanced culture who offers them all technology they could ever dream of. Unfortunately the cynical nature of the team forces them to dig deeper and they find out the advanced civilization purposefully causes a large amount of the population to become sterile. They then use the remaining population after a couple generations to work the fields and collect resources for the homeworld.
