Short clip when BJ gets his banner raised in Air Canada Centre/Toronto Maple Leafs. BJ is the man who killed the myth "chickenswedes" and made way for many swedish/european players to the NHL.
Came back here after Borje announced his ALS diagnosis today, such sad news for the Salming family & all of Leafs Nation. Borje the legend, beloved in Toronto... Stay strong King !!
Today you passed Borje. Flying high forever. Peace and rest now. Just shy of two weeks after that last Saturday night hockey in Canada moment. You looked damn happy. Everyone will always be proud of you!
Salming journey was much harder than his contemporary, was much harder to climb, n he did it, in majestic fashion. Toronto's fans are hard to be pleased. They had very high bar for anyone wearing the leafs. They were unforgiving, n those were maple leafs dark ages when salming was here, but salming year after year , conquered toronto bravely, gracefully, a true king. Im very happy that i had seen him play.
Countless times saw salming blocked shots, was abused by opponents, he stood up, never back down. When the leafs was a trash team, he stepped in to help , created countless chances for teammates to score. Still remember later on in 80s, the team was full of rookies n youngsters knew nothing to do. Salming always there led by examples, not to be afraided facing the power houses. Without salming , the players were only a group of scared puppies....he was just like an old king led the charge in the front with rookie soldiers.
salming is the best toronto maple leaf since 1967, a true leader, outstanding individual and a man who played to win every hockey game during his stellar career, if you want to win play like Borge Salming 🍁 thank you Borge
I loved watching the Leafs in the 1970s. I would make my Inger Ham, Dan Baloney and Borje Salami sandwiches right before the Hockey Night in Canada games on Saturday nights.
Not only did they retire Borje Salming's number 21 that evening. If you look closely you could also see that the number 4, worn by Borje's coach Red Kelly during his playing days in Toronto, along with Hap Day when he played, was also raised to the rafters.
On behalf of Red Wings fans everywhere Thank you for our Swedish players👍 Last week, I watched Swedish youngsters beat Finland, here in Plymouth Michigan. How do you say thank you very much in Swedish?
Oh my goodness he's always been my favorite as a child as I got his autograph and I gave him a birthday present and when he finished drinking outta his cup of something......I took it but I've since lost it since it was 1985
I recall reading in Salming's autobiographical book what a gentleman he thought Red Kelly always was when he coached the Leafs in the mid-70's. Salming said that he once threw a temper tantrum directed at Kelly during a game because he disagreed with Kelly's coaching decisions. Kelly didn't say anything. Salming said that he apologized to the coach after the game. Kelly responded with, "It's o.k Borje." Salming also wrote that Red gave Salming's son Anders his first pair of skates. A true gentleman.
#21 should be retired damn it... He's done so much for hockey, and so much for the maple leafs. He atleast should have had his own ceremony. Newayz like Maxie said, God bless him.
@qkn although your comment was from 5 years ago and you may not even go on on CZcams anymore but hey , guess what ? Mats Sundin's banner DID get retired already .. it got retired tonight :3
He did do so much for the game, but even though he didn't have his own ceremony, he completely had the ceremony to himself even when Red's and Day's jerserys numbers were honored. And yes, I think he should have his number retired not just by the club, but by the whole league cause he was the first Euro superstar the NHL has ever had. I would like to see Philly retire his number, they would be happy and insulted at the same time, lol.
He passed away today. He was a true legend and pioneer. RIP Borje

So well said, I don't think people understand the strength and character it took to break into the NHL at that time . A legend among legends.
Very Swedish name you have there buddy. Vänlig hälsning från Stockholm

Rick Cordeiro Börje Salami hahah
I believe the greatest Leaf ever.
one of my favorite toronto defensemen of all time.
God bless the legend. That year in 2006, Numbers 4 and 21 were honored to rafters, until it was permanently retired 10 years later.
Also one of the earliest CZcams hockey videos.
This deserves so many more views, absolutely spine-chilling video! RIP BORJE💙

When Salming was on the ice he would never bore ya.
That was a good one😁👍. Börje was an amzing guy.
makes me so proud to be swede
He was and is my all-time favourite Leaf. As kids we used to imitate his blocking slide and be #21 Borje.
You should be proud.
Sweden has one of the top hockey programs in the world.
Sad such a great player had to waste his great career in such a dysfunctional organization as the Ballard-era Leafs
On behalf of Red Wings fans everywhere
Thank you for our Swedish players👍

@@timfronimos459 Thank you very much = Tack så mycket :)
RIP Börje Salming 1951-2022
//Swedish Red Wings fan since 2001
Borje Salming was one of THREE former Leafs to have their jersey numbers retired that night. The other two were Leonard "Red" Kelly and Hap Day.

@LuuKen It should, the two greatest leafs in history are Borje and Mats. End of story.
William Armstrong its a bit sad that we dont talk about Börje here in Sweden anymore
