  • If you game on multiple different PCs, then running your Steam games from an external hard drive or SSD could be just what you need. You can store many games across multiple external hard drives, and play them on any PC anywhere at any time. This video shows how to install Steam games on an external hard drive or SSD.
Steam Folder Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

very useful guide thanks. There is only one question left, game saves are also transferred and immediately become available on another PC?

if i buy DLC for a game I already have, can I then choose to install the DLC on the external even if the original is on the internal drive?

I have one specific issue now. My cromebook recognizes the hard drive but it doesn’t put it anywhere in the lists to install it in. I formatted it different times and yet nothing.

Some more demanding games (last gen still, just larger in file size) sometimes freeze or restarts the pc. Could it be because of my RTX 3080 and 750W PSU not having enough power to support the graphics card? This is my guess from what I have tried out because whenever I install the games on my internal SSD, there is no problem whatsoever.

Once I'm in the download in settings, the option for the library folder is not there anymore. Any suggestion?

The interface has already been updated. Go to Steam > Settings > Storage > Click the Drop Down Arrow > Add Drive > Add A New Steam Library (Click the Drop Down Arrow then select the drive that you wanna use for storage > Once the new Folder has been added, click the three dots on the side > Select Make Default
      Hope this helps kapatid.

@@thewendzday the ssd should be in NTFS?

@@dianamourag This has nothing to do with the File system the drive is formatted with, I mean as long as Windows can read the files.
So, in general NTFS should have no problem.

Question: once you copied a game from the internal storage to the External SSD, can you delete the game from the Internal storage and still play games using the External SSD?

I don't have enough space on my internal drive, can i download a stream game into an external hard drive and play it?
Will it cause any damage to my external hard disk or my PC??

Thank you very much for a nice tutorial. I wonder whether the speed of the USB3 drive matters to the smoothness when playing games.
    Does 10Gbps or 20Gbps (speed) make a difference ?
