- Society has changed. Longstanding marriages still exist. Re-marriages exist where one spouse within a short time frame becomes a caregiver. For re-married spouses this responsibility may come as a shock as the goal was to marry and have a playmate to enjoy retirement. Retirement now is the role of a full time caregiver. When this occurs it is time to involve all family members in a discussion about care needs and care costs.

I’m 55, my husband is 78. I knew I’d be a spouse caregiver because of our age difference. We didn’t expect his sudden cancer diagnosis. He says he’s grateful for all of my hard work I do for him… I say I’m simply living our vows.
It's good that you recognized the possibilities of caregiving due to age differences. Please remember to take care of yourself.
My Wife is my Care Giver , and I'm very thankful for her. But I'm feeling like such a burden to her now. And I don't think she's going to be able to do it much longer. It's been getting a bit harder us both. She's needs some help with taking care of me. I just don't know what to do.
Charles - Can you investigate options for her to have some assistance? You might start with your local area agency on aging - they have an information and referral department that may be able to refer you to some programs. Or ask a nurse at your doctor's office who also may know of some resources.
How does a spouse receive the care tax credit on form 2441 if they're the care giver?
Hi Roxanne - Apologies, I'm not a CPA so I can't answer that question. I do know that care expenses that are for chronic care that exceed a certain percentage of income can be deducted. I suggesting asking someone at a local H&R Block or an accountant or CPA.
