- Dear Friends, I hope you’re well ! The last two weeks have been really busy with orchestra, teaching, and lot of bass clarinet tutorials I’m preparing for the @digitalclarinetacademy ! More than 90 minutes of videos about all you need to know to practice bass clarinet from the beginning to orchestra auditions with an amazing roster of which I feel very honored to be a part. I’ve been asked to talk about how to arrange a Bach suite, and I decided to arrange the Courante from the 1st suite as a support for my explanations.
The Bach cello suites are definitely some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717-23, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen.
You know my passion for Easter eggs, and if you carefully look, you’ll find a few visitors hidden in the background, looking to seeing who’s going to be first to discover all of them ! 😁
You can hear on this video a Buffet bass clarinet Tosca 1195R with a Vandoren B40 mouthpiece, V12 3,5 reeds, Vandoren Optimum ligature.

The tone quality of that clarinet is just wonderful. Different from the sonority of the cello, but just as delightful in it’s own way. I spotted Bach listening to you, i’ll have to listen again to find the other easter eggs. One thing that is always missing from your descriptions is any information about the background images. Would love to know where these places are. They are of such high quality, I always marvel at them.

You're lovely playing on the B40 makes me wonder if I've gone too open on my b50 mouthpiece with 3.0s. More than likely it's just a matter of practise and embouchure :,/
Thank you very much ! I like the B50 also ! But I would be able to play long phrases like this, it’s more demanding for me but it depends so much from the player !

Je ferai l’intégralité de la première suite c’est sûr :-)) j’avoue que cet instrument est quasi neuf, et qu’en plus il est passé dans les mains expertes du technicien du show room Buffet à Paris, un vrai bonheur, et très très peu de bruits de clés :-)) aucun filtrage, aucun effet, juste de la reverb !

Hey! Interesting that one of the more modern clarinets fits more into Barock (sound) than the usual ones (Ab, Bb).
You played it great :-) everytime I try to play a Bach piece it is sound too romantic. You really have to get used to the baroque sound, articulation, etc.

It sounds quite good on the tenor recorder too! - but it does not have the range to play it like this, it has to be adapted a bit.
Here's a challenge - I've always thought Simeon ten Holt's Solodevilsdance #IV would sound amazing on bass...

I've been working on this suite on the Basset Recorder, but it will never sound as good as this (mostly because it is an octave higher than the original).

La clarinette basse Tosca est vraiment un très bon instrument et c'est pour cela qu'il est dommage qu'elle claque un peu trop du côté des clés.
