- The Fender HM Strat is back and louder than ever. Originally released in 1988 by Fender Japan, this new model shares the same look as the original with updated high-gain HM humbucker and single-coil pickups in an HSS configuration. A fast thin “C” maple neck with maple or rosewood fingerboard and 24 jumbo frets helps your fingers move quickly, and the Floyd Rose Special double-locking tremolo keeps your dive-bombs in tune. Available in eye-catching Ice Blue, Frozen Yellow, Flash Pink and Bright White with black hardware, the HM Strat is a powerful guitar that gets you to turn up the volume. We invited Chris Garza to check out the new HM Strat and share his first impressions.

I used to play like this guy, then the second week, I learnt a few chords...
So what are you’re accomplishments in music?
@@Nightshade1881 not being in suicide silence...
My thoughts exactly, it’s funny ol craig didn’t have nothing else to say. Hating on a man that’s responsible for playing guitar in band that helped shape the death core Genre!!
Rip Mitch & long live Suicide Silence.
@Nicolas Northern I'd defend Garza, cuz Garza made me feel like you can still be badass while playing rhythm
so your band tours the world I take it
So cool that you guys let Skinny Pete from Breaking Bad demo this guitar
Lol
I use to own one of these back in 1988. It only cost about $400.00 back then.
What is that after inflation?
@@VictorColli Fender is asking about $1200.00 for a 2020 Strat HM Guitar.
@@VictorColli $864.44 in 2019 dollars
@Detective Biggles I think Fender is asking too much $$$ for this Guitar
Now there 2,000 i had a really rare squier stagemaster which got lawsuited by another brand
Awesome thanks Love guitar centers everywhere
Just got the last bright white #321 I had a 89black given to me I remember how the neck was like RG550 so thin then stolen so happy going back to 6 from years of playing 7string Jackson’s this Fender strat has made me more Musical again
This guy gets the whole thing of music
I'm gonna play some open e strings. Then do some bends on the 7th and 12th fret whip out a cheesy blues scale solo and do some squeals? What the actual fuck?
Sounds like someone messing around at guitar center who never played before
yeah this demo was underwhelming...
“Sounds like Birdshit” - Willie Brown
Waiting on that GARZA SIG MODEL........\m/..........
LAWN 1 lawn care he has a custom black strat he plays in Suicide Silence death metal band it’s nice as hell 6 string instead of 7
You can get a vintage one for a lot less...
I was stoked to see they reissued these until I saw the price tag.
I got a usa 1988 HM in white/cream in 2020 for $400
I like suicide silence but good lord, play something more like what this guitar was built for. They should have gotten Andreas from sepultura if they wanted a metal guy that's not hair metal. Ol boy can rip.
Everyone in metal can rip sepultura isnt the only metal band in the world
For a guitar like this, you need Ethan Brosh to do a demo.
IslandSoundz seriously, right! What a missed opportunity.
Definitely!!!!! Ethan where you at??
Apparently he has shot a demo video for Fender. He posted on Instagram.
@@JedNadin Sweet
He is playing everything i played when i first touched a guitar...thats what it sounds like
It's a freakin Charvel
It's more the other way around since Charvel is older.
A 1200 dollar Charvel, with "oh, nice upgrade platform" parts.
Actually not. This is a Japanese made strat, from the same Fujigen factory that made them the first time around. Charvels are made in Mexico or the US.
@@kitoyobeni1 funny thing is, I have two charvel pro mods and they're both made in Japan. Go figure.....
@@leedemkiw6085 Earlier models? I guess I'm thinking of the SoCal series (and related Dinkys)...
At first I thought he is the young david gilmour.
He approaches a riff as a sound? What else would you approach it as?
I sounded like that after my 5th lesson too....
Love your tone man!!..sick sick sick😵😲😵😲
Ok I’m glad i wasn’t the only one thinking this was a horrible demonstration
I have a couple of G&L Climax XL's that are basically this guitar. Made in the USA with better hardware. See if you can pick one up used. I think the Climax Plus is the one with the HSS setup versus mine with the HH.
Man, I want One🎸🎼🎵🎶🔊!😍🤗.Anybody know how much they run ?
HEIDI FISHER $1100
It's kinda pointless but OK, it's capturing their 80s experiments when Jackson and Charvel were competitors rather than subsidiaries
You forgot about Ibanez
@@DamianS1893 I think Ibanez was way bigger in the 90's but not the 80's. Thanks to Steve Vai
“Guitarist”
At this price I’ll just buy a Charvel or a new Kramer Fender is making a big mistake selling this guitar with mediocre parts for such a high price. There are companies out there that offer similar guitars with a Floyd 1000 and a sustainiac for less than $800.00
Yes...my shecter SVSS is much much better than this...
The original was alder body, kahler trem , hard shell case for around $800 bucks and was a better guitar, for the price they’re asking you can definitely get a better guitar for less money.
@@claudelee5382 A Kahler? Bbbbbawawahagaha
@@claudelee5382
Yeah everybody saying they were four to $500 new BS I bought one in 1988 was $750 everybody saying they were for heavy metal B'S I played country music for 9 years on
Mine they were very versatile guitar.
0:19 say what?? evergerbody???
Unreal. A 1200$ guitar with a Floyd special, basswood body and non-name brand pickups. Fender you guys are really funny
Reserved my copy in ice blue
Victor Colli that's a sweet color!
Victor Colli got Bright white since got sonic blue fender mustang
Avril fans fender Banjarmasin from indonesia
So so gud 🥺
its just like a gun...
can blast anything...m
this dude just makes this beauty sound like shit thanks alot bro
Dear Fender - please consider having Pete Thorn demo your gear.
Bring back the big block Strat and Tele!!!
barnyard vapes yes!!!
I think this guy is new. Because, the Strat, has been a staple in the heavy metal Community, for decades. Just listen to ...and justice for all. Jimi Hendrix was using a strat to create the most metal tones ever heard. Well Tony Iommi pulled out Mary Ford's guitar. To create Black Sabbath sound. When you hear Black Sabbath, you instantly know what guitar he's playing. Because they all sound the same. But when you're listening to a musician with a strat in their hands, there's all kinds of debate as to what guitar they're using. Which only proves, the Fender Stratocaster is the most diverse guitar ever made.
I've owned my Strat for over 25 years. And her and I, won't be parting anytime soon.
These are not of the same quality as the originals.
You are right, when these first came out they were USA made, alder body , kahler trem with a hard shell case for around $850, everyone jumped on that basswood body crap because EVH did and it’s the cheapest crap in terms of guitar woods available and alder and ash are so much better and at this price there are so many other great guitars available than this obvious hustle
@@claudelee5382 Heck.. Even my G&L legacy made in Indonesia would blow this out of the water.
I have other guitars that are more expensive or higher specs.. But that one is my favorite and most played.
It also is way more versatile than this guitar.
And.. I think it cost me around $500 or so.
If I wanted this style of guitar.. There are so many more affordable options for 900 bucks theae days.
This seems like quite a rip off..and I think that "strat" logo on the headstock looks cheesy AF.. Even if that's kind of the point, I would find it incredibly irritating.
@@questionmark5463 Even though this guitar can't match the 80s originals, I sincerely doubt your Indonesian made guitar will blow it out of the water. Lol
@@gmmakesmehurl Actually, I would have to disagree. G&L tribute guitars use the same parts as the US ones and the QC on mine seems really impeccable.
I did some minor upgrades like putting in a graphite nut, changed the bridge pickup to a Duncan JB and some gotoh locking tuners, but that's about it.
There's no Floyd, but I rarely use a floyd and have other guitars for that, but I have the bridge floating and it stays in tune extremely well.
Maybe I got lucky with this one because it just feels and sounds so good.. But I have played and owned other G&Ls including a beautiful ASAT Deluxe and all of them (including the Indonesian made one) are high quality and get more play these days than my Ibanez, old Jacksons etc.. Maybe the only other one I play as much is an old 80s Hamer Steve Stevens signature.
Usually for gigs or recording I can just take the Hamer and G&L.
You should try one.
Edit.. Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for Japanese made guitars. This though seems to have about 300$ tacked on because of the Fender name and nostalgia.
Hard to justify unless you are a big fan of the original ones.
Christopher Russell ysah the trem on my 89 was amazing and believe had Dimarzios
2nd vid on this guitar I've watched and both players fail to make it sound good.
I must have seen the same videos - way too much gain and playing like they are trying to strangle it.
Joss on the GAK vid sounds good
It's called METAL. Buy a $1200 guitar, then destroy the tone with a XTREME CAT IN A BLENDER WITH A CHAINSAW pedal.
Well...he made that guitar sound like complete horse's ass!!! Makes me reconsider whether to buy one now!!!
@@johnramsey7706 Why do these numbskulls do a review and obliterate the guitar's tone like that? I don't give a rat's ass what your fancy new pedal sounds like...
That kind of price for a Basswood body I mean should have got Ash or Alder for that
cool hair. awesome guitar playing.
Sounded like a bunch of crap. I'm going to check out Chris and his band. Hopefully they sound better than this demonstration. Really like the guitar. If it sells well, maybe they will upgrade the tremelo without raising the price.
I like Suicide Silence, but I don't think he was the best guy for the interview.
Waiting on that Garza fender baritone haha yeah rite
john doe it’s nice black strat custom shop 6 string he plays in his band Suicide Silence 2 RiP Mitch
@@nickford3328 I haven't been keeping up w. Them lately, cool to get fender into heavy shit, I play a strat w. A bridge hum. Heavy tones I get with it for sure.
So did he leave his endorsement?
Tommy Sorrow he is now part of the Fender/Jackson/Charvel family since last year
This is James Francos best role ever. Wow.
Chris Garza is a legend!
For that price, I'd save for a Jim Root jazzmaster or a charvel...
I want one so bad but I'm both left handed and broke. 😔
If you have little to no money just a few hundred dollars and you need a lefty try Harley Benton
Fender needs to bring back their Fender Talon that was the baddest guitar they ever made,I had that white guitar in the 80s,but its nothing compared to the Talon🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ya I agree. I talked to fender about this 2 years ago and the rep said its very possible. I was talking about fender and heartfield talons. And fender comes out with this. WTF. If the didn't use the cheapest parts I might have bought one. I love my heartfield talon 2 3 and 5 rawk on🤘
The thumbnail looks like my man Wino is um... experimenting again. Not with drugs, just hair products and Strats
If my decision on whether or not to buy this guitar is based solely on this video, then I wouldn't buy it. Despite having all that good gear, nothing he played sounded good at all. I used to hear similar bad sounds years ago from my $199 Ibanez with muddy stock pickups played through a 20 watt Fender Mustang solid state amp, and I didn't need a bunch of pedals to make it sound equally as bad. IMO they should have chosen someone else to demo this axe. Ralph Macchio probably would've sounded better lol.
Kinda cool but it's spec'd like a 500.00 guitar and they are asking over 1000.00.
$500 headstock shape 😉
Reminds me of a charvel
Nicholas Bernal it is since fender bought Jackson/Charvel it’s a Jackson Dinky/Charvel San dimas
Nick Ford It's weird how companies buy out their competition.. thanks 4 the info, now I know
What a let down. I've been waiting for fender to reissue the HM series for years. The price is rediculous for what you get. Factory pickups and a Floyd Special for $1200? It's a waste of time. Charvel for $899 loaded with good shit vs this? Charvel all day. I'm disappointed.
It's 2020, if you have a job you have $1200. Unless you're married w little bastards. Then I'm sure they gave to ask for permission
Jon Villalobos yeah I went to NAAM representing Jackson which parent company is fender I left with Jackson SLX Rainbow Crackle and ordered bright white HM strat I’m gonna swap the Seymour Duncan’s over and the floyd rose to the strat. Soloist better equipment the hm strat killer neck and bolt on
I hear ya man. I remember trying out a Fender HM in a music store back in the day and the salesman saying you can take that home for $500. If I could go back in time.
It's also MIJ vs MIM and it's not made to be a competitor against anything. It's just a reissue that a lot of people (myself included) wanted. I bought one and I have no issues swapping out the bridge and pickups. Hell, I'd swap the stock Charvel bridge out too.
Just buy a Charvel San Dimas
AJ Brown Or Jackson Dinky
Rather have a Jackson or ESP
-Glass Caskets- it is a Jackson Dinky. Fender owns Jackson/Charvel google it
I remember when they came out in the 90’s and they didn’t fare well. Get rid of 2 knobs and the middle pup and make it in the USA.
$1200 for this Guitar seems too much.... it is the neck of this Guitar as wide as a Ibanez?
Blue Matrix it’s a Jackson Dinky mixed with Charvel and ibanez Wizard neck
Get Jim Root on this
I don't think the price is too high for a Japanese built guitar.
the ibanez rg550 and rg521 are alot cheaper
@@usta028 I couldn't care less.
Lee Demkiw nowadays yeah love Japanese Fenders
@@nickford3328 we think alike. Love mine, it's a great workhorse. The custom shop range is where it's at though. Pricey as f*#k but the difference is night and day.
SIIIIIIIIICK!
This is why you put something in the online shopping cart, and then cool it for a while before you purchase it. These guitars were alder back in the day, and not basswood (which sucks). The pickups in this thing are cheap, the Floyd bridge is cheap, and I suspect the tuners are as well. And during this guy's "performance" you can see quite a gap between the neck and the neck pocket 1:08 . So, all of these things for over a grand, while there are Charvels, ESPs, and similar that are better made and for less dough. This guitar is marked up high based on the nameplate alone. This is a $699 guitar, not a 1k+ guitar. Come on, Fender!
Please be affordable
Fender: "Okay, we will make a 24 fret guitar"
Chris Garza: "Perfect! I'll play shitty chords I could do on a ukulele
Hater
This is really what they're releasing to compete with brands like Schecter and Ibanez? Hahaha
ha ha yourself buddy: my HM has a top of the line '89 Fujigen neck. It not only competes, but kicks their asses.
Yah it's a turd with off brand pickups a Floyd special
God forbid they piss off the elitist. They'll never survive the future
academyofshem lmao Fujigen? Top of the line? Lmao haha that neck is a joke compared to the nitro wizard 3!! I gotta say you sound like you might be older then 40 because im sorry man this guitar looks like a starter pack guitar. Not to mention they got chris garza to play it. Im pretty sure fender asked him...not the other way around. Plus ill never understand why they asked chris (a guy who mainly plays 7 strings) you will never see this guitar at a Suicide Silence show.
weight a minute I just got this exact guitar defiantly needs little bit more justice in humbuckers picking up 6.9hz needs Seymour Duncan Or Dimarzio and better trem system and you have an elite super strat
Rather have a charvel
couldn't they get someone who actually knows about shredding??
Fender and Gibson are going to have to Branch out of they want to survive. Start making extended range guitar.
Issac Conrad Gibson already got bought out last year
@@nickford3328 yea I'm saying they're going to have to stop making the same thing over and over..some new body shapes, some 7, 8, 9 strings and be innovative. The biggest events that revolutionized the insturment were the creation of the electric, creation of the amp, EVH super strat and guitar tone and the invention of the 7 string. These things help breathe new life into the genre. Right now it's still living off nostalgia and that only goes so far bc to most younger players that is not what's in demand. They gotta stop repeating themselves, keep the old stuff but don't be afraid to explore it won't keep people from buying Les Paul customs to have a killer 9 string Gibson or something else new for these traditional companies.
Looks like knobs are in the way. Nothing worse than playing a gig and accidentally turn your volume down. Nice idea needs better design
Jeff Beck says: right place 😃
Actually the knobs r the best part of the guitar after the neck
Holy shit the amount of boomers and gatekeepers in the comment section. Yikes. No wonder rock is on the decline.
seriously
Just subscribed to Suicide Silence❤
how about gettin some guitar player to play?
All of these boomers and "fender gatekeepers" complaining about Chris Garza not being a good guitarist clearly have never heard his band's music.
Then what when wrong here? Nerves, alcohol, drugs ? Terrible playing, but I will listen to his band .
Im not even a boomer dude, and this guy should be in a garage band somewhere. And that's where he should stay.
@@xheadlessx as much as i hate the self titled album, their whole discography is too good to let that one mistake overshadow their legacy

I can't believe the marketing people at Fender actually posted this video. Yuck. Worst demo I've ever seen of a product.
An 80s strat..... why would they pick an artist who can’t solo???
LOL
Guy with purple hair and shitty riffs thinks he’s heavy. Lol Too funny
Oliver Skatt gotta love Garza going back to 6 strings from playing 7 string for years #respect
lol............
Not the right person for this demo.
Why...
Is this a parody?
Just get a charvel , fender it’s too late
Fender music corp owns the charvel brand so wouldn't that make it too late for charvel?
Justin Bora I want you to reread the comment and see how ridiculous you sound , and after you read I want you see charvel took these guitars and completely owned this right , no need for fender to do this , all it is for a fact is cash grab for nostalgia
@@KilSwt2318 dude you gotta get the sand outta your vag. I wasn't disagreeing with you, merely pointing out that both brands are owned by Fender, so does it really matter in the end since the same company gets paid either way?
Justin Bora lmao I felt like being disrespectful just cause , I hear you lmfao and you right , cash grab either way big money making more money
Hired Help X it’s all same Jackson Dinky / Fender HM / Charvel San Dimas
If only they didn't just do this sort of stuff as limited additions.
That’s marketing for you, if they all sell quickly you can guarantee there will be more as there will have likely been significant cost in setting up production of these with the unique scale length. I have 4 HM Strats
@@keanuuuu The original ones are awesome..I had 5 total and only have 1 left..its at my friends house,he loves it as much as I do..its the white one with the rosewood board..HSS pickup configuration...my fave out of the 5 was an 88 year model with only 1 single humbucker..it wasn't Burgundy in color but not Hot Pink either, kinda in between..it was just an awesome guitar..possibly the rarest with the single humbucker
This guy sux , he kills the guitar at 2:45
Edward Anaya Garza is a writer not solo guy
Painful noise.
He just needs to stick with the 7 string schecter amd stick with deathcore
Austin Peek god no he’s been playing a custom black 6 string last year for suicide silence when we played with him got to play it amazing craftsmanship and guys
He cant play guitar... 😫
He’s still learning like the rest of us
This is what happens when you let a guy who has played rhythm guitar his whole life play lead guitar - pure fucking noise.
So they have a guy player Grunge 1992 guitar on an 80s shredder guitar? terrible marketing, I cant even tell how this shit sounds like
This guitar is a total non-sense in 2020, because back in the day Charvel and Jackson weren't part of FMI.
Now you got it reissued with cheapos parts. For sure the most controversial instruments nowadays.
Laszlo CH should be cheaper so you can upgrade trem system and pickups
He should put the guitar down hes awful
This guitar sounds like shit on all reviews. Fender gives ya shit pickups @ this price range . Buy a Ibanez, Charvel, Schecter, Esp. What a ripoff @ this price! Epic fail again.
Corny. In 5 years you won't be able to give these (and the Lead II) guitars away. Just like years ago.
If you wanted to appeal to the metal community you should have made the headstock pointy lose the tone knobs one volume pot shall suffice. Couldn't even put a descent humbucker on it , if it had an EMG bridge you would get some attention. There's a better newer bridge maker out there not saying names that would be better than a Floyd Rose. Shouldn't this guitar be black? Nope
Hmm nope
Not all of us metal players want pointy guitars!
Most of my Strats have humbuckers and Floyd rose bridges
And the other half are all vintage specs strat.
No pointy crap for me.
This was me after playing guitar for a yea. Dude play something, you cant be in a band and this is the best you can play?
fender, basswood is a cheap and shitty tone wood that is in $200 squiers. i would not advertise the fact that a $1200 guitar has basswood.
“And this is the Fender HM Strat “ ... (takes a beautiful guitar and proceeds to play utter shit). ....
Should of left this trash in the coffin. Just buy a decent humbucker for your mexican strat, or a Soloist. Idk Fender this is desperate
This guy is beginner level
What a horrible demo. I wish they would have used a guitar player to do the review
