Bought an original back in the 80's and, of course, still have it to this day. There's quite a bit of difference between them and the new re-issued ones. Something that I haven't heard anyone mention is, if you have an 80's model with a maple fingerboard, it's a one-piece neck. In other words, there's no fretboard applied onto the neck… the neck IS the fretboard. Mine is like this, and I kind of like it this way. There's also a rosewood skunk stripe running up and down the backside of the neck where the truss rod was installed. Also, the nut (and therefore the neck) is a touch wider... like 1/32" wider at the nut compared to, say, a Charvel neck width, which makes it slightly more difficult to play chords using your thumb over the top of the neck to fret the low E-string. But the neck on mine is the thinnest neck (from front to back) that I have ever played on. Also has nice jumbo fret wire that have plenty of life still left on them, even after all the playing I've done on it over the years! Mine came with a DiMarzio bridge humbucker pickup that has a slightly different tonality than a Seymour Duncan JB, but has almost identical output and a nice cut and sizzle that DiMarzios are known for. Standard Strat sounds are here too using the neck and middle single coil Strat pickups. It has coil splitting for the bridge pickup, and two "TBX" tone controls (meaning these two pots have a notch midways through their control rotation that can filter off higher frequencies when turned counterclockwise from the detent, or add brightness and presence when turned clockwise from the detent. The vibrato assembly is a Kahler-made unit that I really love - the bar screws into it and you can have it so tight that there is no loose clanking or popping sounds when you depress or pull up on it. The original factory paint job still looks absolutely fantastic! It's so durable! In fact, the whole guitar is just a masterpiece in quality - and truly "feels" like a fine quality-made instrument in the hands. I only hope the new ones can compare and play as well as the originals do. Maybe I'll get a new yellow one and see! (Sorry this is so long, but I have nothing but high praises to sing regarding this guitar. It was well worth the cost back then and has been a terrific guitar for me through the years!)

Haven't played one of these, but the fretwork on all 3 of those 550 Genesis I've played has been awful.

Those 550's don't hold a candle to any of them sadly.

keep in mind that these are limited, whereas the Genesis is still being built and a larger production number can cover the costs of the hardware like an Edge. Plus it's an in house trem for Ibanez. Though I would have preferred a 1000 series Floyd as well.

My 2020 white HM should be here tomorrow, 3 April. I can't wait to compare it to my original HM. I'm a little disappointed in Fender for using the cheapest Floyd Rose and using what appears to be generic pickups. I'm really interested in comparing the old DiMarzio 3 humbucker with this new generic humbucker, as well as the single coil. My original HM had the H/S pickup config, which is the rarest version of the HM outside of the single left handed HM I know about. My HM was one of the small number of them made in America. It's a 30 year old guitar and it still looks and sounds as good as the day I bought it.

I don't think this guitar has anything to do with 80's hair metal, but rather with the underground scenes of crossover thrash, death and grind that were at that time, even in this pink.
The guitar was made between 1988-1992, the very end of hair metal

I had the original HM Strat in Razzberry finish and pretty much bought because Greg Howe endorsed it. I love it and abused it for years. A very solid guitar for $500 back in the day. How is the neck joint upper fret access on these new ones? My biggest complaint about the original is that it was pretty chunky at the neck joint (similar to original Jems) making it hard to access the upper frets. I'm assuming this one is much more modern and easy to play? Also I was not a fan of that original Kahler Spyder trem. It stayed in tune great but the thing could not flutter worth a shit lol.

excellent video. I got a question for your next askafish. Now that you're working with Harley Benton can you tell me if there's any truth to the rumor going around that the Harley Benton Floyd Rose is better than the Floyd Rose special? I recently acuired a Harley Benton S620 and was surprised at how well the floyd rose works. none of the normal issues with cheap floyd rose guitars and it was only $140.

Hey Hunter, just FYI, the original had a Kahler Spyder instead of the FR Special. The Spyder itself is an out of production Floyd Rose knockoff. There's no way to get those anymore, and they were a bit unreliable anyway. I assume they just put a Special on because it's cheap, that's kind of Fenders MO after all.
