👆 Fender HM Strats - tinyurl.com/uf...
Could '80s nostalgia be any sweeter? For Fender, they can't seem to get enough of it. And that's why they've brought back one of their hidden gems from the height of the hair metal era - the flamboyant HM Strat!
Originally produced between 1988 -1992, the Fender HM Strat was a moderate success during its relatively short production run. The HM Strat became a sought-after collectable for keen Fender aficionados, who adored its hot-rodded looks and forward-thinking features. The resurrected HM Strat retains much of the original's DNA. Heck, it's even made in the same original factory!

”Let get Shreddy” plays blues licks👌🏽
Yeah!
Where's Rob and Bea when you need them?
Metal gets a lot from blues licks anyway, it's just sped up (of course not everything, but the roots are there)
Hopefully rob isn’t around. Sick of the drama and ego lately. Used to like him a lot.
Mert Güneş that’s true!
Lmao yeah they’re trying their best I’m sure
The pink one sounds faster.
It would be faster if it was red
Lol
Billy Corgan has entered the chat.
It's definitely more moody to my ears :)
Moody, Broody and Fast! Yeah baby!
I don’t even care about the gear shown in the videos anymore. I just watch these ‘cause Lee and Pete are an amazing, enjoyable duo. Love you guys!
Im turning 21 and I managed to find myself an original 1986 model in sea green, they are absolutely brilliant and it’s my pride and joy!
Lucky
I am just here for the "Where is Rob and Rabea" comments... :-)
People who are hating on these you have to understand that these are made just for the nostalgia. It is a tribute to the original ones, it is more of a collectors item. If you want something that makes more sense in this spec just buy the Charvels and Jacksons, I gurantee that Fender won't mind. Why would they try to compete against themselves ?
Dont mistake criticism for hating though. A floyd special, and basswood body for this price point is just gouging.
@@bohdankhmelnytsky9369 Agreed!
@@bohdankhmelnytsky9369 Maybe it's just gouging to you! I don't feel that way one bit and while you're sitting there counting your pennies, I'll be playing my new HM Strat! These are going to sell out quick. Everyone loves playing these because they are sweet! Sorry... lol!
and they had to do something with all the Ryan Adams necks
I've always wanted one if these, but disappointed that they cheaped out on the Floyd and pickups. Would prefer in black, too.
The Floyd doesn’t detract from the space at all. The front edge of the saddles is where the intonation is set so on 25.5” scale guitars (for example)the saddles must be in the same location relative to the nut. You guys said the scale length is 25.1 inches, so that makes a difference. All the extra space the Floyd occupies is behind the saddles.
Robert Robinson He corrected that almost immediately and said the extra frets pushed the pickups closer
Of course the Floyd placement makes some difference. It's 0.4" closer to the neck having a 25.1" rather than 25.5"
Everyone complains about the cheap FR, but I've had that pink HM for almost 3 weeks now and I can tell it's behaving greatly. It maybe on the expensive side and clinging on to nostalgia, but man, it is a really really good guitar!
me too...I even have a Gotoh in the hanger to replace it but the special has been fine
When these were originally out I was just learning how to play guitar, and I saw them at music stores and thought they looked so very mysterious. Now I’m old and wouldn’t mind having one in white, Black or a candy apple red. 🤩
Back in the day, I wore a pair of Hyper Color shorts to a party. Ended up slow dancing with this girl I had a big crush on. The color changed in one spot. The spot where there was the most heat. The spot that would be the most embarrassing spot for a 14 year old kid to have. I remember walking back to my friends and they were laughing almost to the point of tears.
Just want to say, the captain has improved so much. Mind-blowingly so!
I think Andertons is a guitarist light - we need another Joss - not dissing the other guys, but someone a little bit mad wouldn't go amiss!
The Ibanez in Back to the Future was Roadstar II. I had one long ago. They had a cool vibe to them. I kinda wish I still had it.
They're for sale on the used market all the time. The price has gone up a bit on them now, but you can grab one for like $500.
@@joshuamichael4312 It has been so long since I had one. It was used, metallic red with a white pickguard. I think I paid about $150-$200. That was probably 20 years ago or so.
@@JunkfoodZombieGuns I always wanted one too. I'm kicking myself for not buying this nice white one for $150 about 5 years ago. Mint too, probably sat in a case for years.
@@joshuamichael4312 😮😢
They’re really high quality and dirt cheap. I have a black SSH model. One of my favorite guitars, and I got it for $200.
I'm 15 and have to say I love these. I don't have lots of money to be spending on guitars and even though I don't play metal. I need one of these guitars!
I think Fender have missed the point with these HM Strats, the price point is a bit steep. Especially when they're fitted with a Floyd Rose Special bridge and Fender's own pickups. A Jackson Pro series Dinky/Soloist and an Ibanez RG 550 are cheaper and better equipped. Just my 2 cents worth.
Agreed...if these HM Strats were selling for around $799 that would be a lot more reasonable for what is being offered.
Yep the RG550 is a superior guitar for the money, much higher quality bridge and cheaper.
Not steep enough to keep them from selling out. MIJ vs. Indonesia or China helps the pricepoint.
Every article of fender is heavily overpriced.
@@roaddog7542 RG550 is Japanese too though, better spec'd, lower priced too. the original HM Strats weren't even popular guitars (quite the opposite), Fender are cashing in on the 80s Nostalgia bandwagon but really there are better guitars for the money in that market..
Hell.. Even from Fender themselves if you consider Charvel, granted they are MIM but they are better spec'd.
For the Captain, the orignal 80's UK Strats did have a curved heel.
I took a pic of an original black body, maple fretboard HM Strat I have and shared it with them on Insta - showing the neck plate - Shame these reissues don't have the DiMarzio SuperDee
I had one of those 80s Ibanez Roadstar II.... Favorite neck profile of all time...
The Anderton's gear testing room should be named Electric Laddie-land!
My dad used to have an original white HM Strat with a rosewood fretboard that he played in his band a while back. Sadly, both he and the guitar are gone.
Rip :( 💖
The original '88-'92 HM Strats were made in Japan, as are these. In fact, the reissues are made in the same Fujigen factory as the originals
Pete looked and sounded uncomfortable - This would have bene perfect to bring Chappers back into the fold !!
Leave chappers home!
He and Rabea would have been a better pair to demo these particular guitars. There's a large group of salty crybabies that are butthurt about Rob being a mean poopy head, though. See SJs comment for verification.
I prefer Bea than Chappers for demoing stuff.
Chappers will be back. He’s just worried about bringing negative attention to Andertons right now.
Love Love LOVE Pete, but this was a demo made for the Monkey Lord! Just sayin'.
I Love Pete, but I feel like this would have been a phenomenal Chappers & The Captain episode
Also, this things look legit, would love one in blue or white👌🏼
Did you boys record this episode twice? The chalk board says Fender and Lead!!! in different camera angles.
I don't even play metal, and I WANT one of these! I love the wild colors and the "STRAT" moniker on the headstock. They are WAY over the top and ridiculous. I love it.
I can remember the Greg Howe adverts for these back in the day. Now he was a player ;0)
I'm a synth person, so I actually didn't know about these Strats until quite recently... But the answer to your question is: They are SUUUUPER cool. Coolest Strat ever. I've never wanted a guitar more than these.
They were made in Japan, then, and HM stood for Heavy Metal, and the heel is the same.
I have a Japanese one, it has a Fender branded Kahler tremelo, the headstock is black with the usual Fender logo
@@gordonneill438 I believe that was the 1990 model?
except that it is HSS and has a switch to split the humbucker
@@gordonneill438 Stupid thing, I found one on my tablet, my on my PC google couldn't: www.chicagomusicexchange.com/listing/fender-hm-strat-hss-blue-marble-1990/23646553
I noticed the tiny letters just above the heel, 'Made in Japan'. Apparently the 80s ones looked /were different from the 90s ones.
The original HM Strats had the same neck joint as these, I have one sitting at home
Yep, recently sold one. Great guitars, if I recall correctly they had a Dimarzio invader in the bridge. Only thing I wasn't keen on was the 'Khaler Spyder' bridge...
@@Severinate a floyd will fit basically same thing change studs cause the spyder post and knife edges work dif. better tuning stability actually cause of post and knife edge design but cause it is more solid they dont flutter an that is what i love about a floyd but these strats dont float anyway :)
I had one, and yes it was like that... but can you please confirm - the necks on the original are like a D shape, really thick with a weird flat middle to them. I tried these new models and the neck is soooo much nicer and NOT like the original.
@@Severinate yeah, great sound tbh. really thick and gritty. The khaler wasnt great, the nut was worse - it had an odd string through part that always seemed totally unnecessary to me.
@@ianfield-richards228 Haha, yeh, the nut was a pain, lost count the amount of times I stuck a finger trying get strings through. Ultimately it was the Khaler that made me wardrobe it until I sold it.. Was tempted to keep the Pups though..
My 16 year old has no concept of a "dads" guitar, because I'm not that talented. He just appreciates well made instruments. He already owns a Fender Tele , Strat and 12 string plus numerous others. Expect an order from him soon!
This one should have been a Rabea and Chappers video in my opinion. Nevermind
Better yet, Pete and Bea.
0:23 What. Do my ears deceive me? Pinch harmonics from the Captain! I will have to go outside and see if the sky is still blue!
Well... I was shocked too, but since Captains top favourite players are Richie Sambora and Satchel, it make sense...
All I can say about my teenage years is that I was and still I am in love with Telecasters of different kind or T-style guitars [including Ibanez Talman]. Regarding Strats, when I saw Malmsteen, Blackmore, Eric Johnson, everyone from Iron Maiden etc. playing Starts I kind of never thought about it as a dads' guitar. Of course IM strats and EJ one are totally different guitars. So for me strats are most neutral visual-wise.
Damn! Cap is getting better and better with each episode!
Dark Perez oh yes. He used to be able to play one lick and not very well. Now he is actually rather impressive. Quite motivational really.
Shreddy? Somehow i missed a bit of shredding.🤔 The outro was cool anyway. 😁
The clean with the dirty at the end was the best sounding Anderson’s jam I’ve ever heard, tone and playing.
The vibe between Pete and Lee is just excellent. Love listening to their jams.
Lee “Saturday Boy” Anderton has some licks up his sleeve!
They are only cool if you grow your hair out, lots of hair spray ,eye shadow, tight leopard pattern pants, sleeveless shirts and a bandanna!! :)
as a young person, i'd play the shit out of that guitar lol
You could buy those for almost nothing in pawn shops all through the 90s. 🎸🎸🎸
Haha, I love how people are still amazed Floyd style trems can stay in tune, I mean they have their issues especially with lower quality versions, but the design is practical and functional, kind of the anti-bigsby, lol!
@P. Doherty FR is overrated, and with locking tuners, graphite nuts, etc...FR's are pointless these days and too complicated to setup anyway.
@@ViciousTuna2012 Too complicated for who? Setting them up is very nearly identical to other floating trems, the hard bit is balancing the tension which doesn't disappear on non Floyds. The benefit of Floyds is the superior tuning stability, even the best setup perfectly dialled in non-locking does not have the kind of tuning stability a Floyd has where you can abuse it for months and the thing will still be in tune.
I prefer the best trem ever: Kahler !
Gen. Layabout not complicated at all actually. I added locking tuners on top of locking nut. Added a stabilizer too (acts like hardtail but can still dive) so if string breaks rest stay in tune. I’d never switch to anything else. Tuning is flawless.
@@EOHRyan I'll take versatility and tone over the "ease" of not having to tune from time to time any day...and Floyds kill both those things.
I know how to set up a Floyd...I used them for years. My Wilkinson performs better than any Floyd I've ever owned
I have a Fender Strat HSS, 21 frets, with floyd rose and the spacing between the pickups is enormous in comparison. It's a beaut to play and the floyd doesn't push things forward. The spacing of the pickups on the HM Strat will be in those 24 frets pushing them back.
Almost... The 0.4" shorter scale length means that the Floyd is closer to the neck
Lee’s playing is getting better and better!
I have an 89 HM in chrome red with the rarer HS pickup arrangement. I bought it new and I still play it nearly every single day. It looks like I might be getting it a younger sibling.
I had the seafoam green one! The original bridge was dimarzio
In Australia these reissue are $2,500 friggin’ dollars! For the same money I can pick up a pre-owned Suhr from Marketplace any day of the week. They should have been half that price tag or just give us hard ware made of solid gold if you are going to charge that much......not a $50 bridge!
I got quoted 1850 - better music canberra
@@jamiewilson1229 I picked up all original late’80s in red for $1,500 recently. I couldn’t be any happier
its a cheapest Floyd tho, u can get a Jackson for £900, load with Seymour ducan pick ups, set neck, ebony fret board, Floyd rose 1000,
ian flanagan or a Japanese Ibanez RG550. But they’re still nice
Somehow I think this is aimed at *ahem* older players who want to 'remember when''.
Yes i just got the pro series dinky dk2 glow green so great
Thomas Maynard www.thomann.de/gb/jackson_pro_dk2_dinky_slime_green.htm?sid=9c9292cbdd048ab04b7769b8d39fb067 yes looks very nice indeed
I’ll take the PINK one 😍🤓
Yes it did have the cut behind the neck...I still own mine from '91
Shredders you two are not but there is always hope.
The way I remember the original HM Strat, I thought the neon colours, and that giant STRAT printed on the headstock, made it look like a cheap knock-off, and I mean CHEAP. I wondered why the headstock didn't say Squier, because it looked like Fender was desperately trying to hide the fact that they straight-up copied the Charvel Desolation. A FULL YEAR went by, and the shop STILL had them. So, I asked the shop-keeper if he had sold any, and he said "We can't even GIVE these away." I didn't blame him. I didn't know anyone who thought this was cool. After all, if you wanted a Fender to play rock, you went with a Jazzmaster with P90s. Simple as that. And we did.
Fast forward to 2005. Fender released the Showmaster. Showmasters featured transparent paints which showed the wood underneath, and they had matching headstocks. Finally! Fender figured how to do a "superstrat" correctly! Fender nailed it, and I fell in love. I bought a 2006 cherry burst, and I still have it today. In fact, it is behind me right now. It connected with me so much over the years, to where it became one of those guitars I will never sell.
To answer your question, I'm 22 and I think these are sick. I actually already have a made in Japan HSH Heartfield Talon from 1992, which was produced by Fender (Vinne Moore played one, along with Russ Parrish pre-Satchel) and they were made in the same factory as the Ibanez Jem. The only thing I don't love about these guitars is the annoyances that come with a floyd. It makes gigging kind of annoying, and it's not easy to change tunings
My first electric was a red Ibanez Road Star II. I foolishly sold it when I was still in my teens and have missed it since. Wish I could find it again. Loved it.
I remember seeing an original HM at Guitar Center in the used section. They were offering like $350 for it. Didn't have the money but do kind of regret I didn't snatch it when I had the chance.
I have an original HM Strat and it does have the rounded neck plate. The plate also has "Fender USA" stamped on it.
First thing change the pickups"! 🤘🎸
BTW - they just issued a sweet looking black finish. When I saw the black, I had to buy one.
Love the Pink one!! These guitars are epic!! I need the Pink one!
Is it me or do these two just seem to like each other and tension is out of the room
Steve Eckert they’re both married. I think. Focus on the guitars
@@pablo9364 Embrace the bromance! :-D
I like these two playing. It’s often very melodic and without 500 notes every 10 seconds. It’s all very well travelling at 100 mph but you miss most of the scenery.
Loved the 80s shred tone Pete had in the end of the video 🤘🎸
I bought one in 1989 in black and I still have it. MIJ.
@@Havanacuba1985 I've had no issue , then again I don't use the trem that much, stays in tune.
My '89 is a USA model. But I think mine was assembled in the US with Japanese made parts. Has black & white wires on the single coils which some say indicates a Japanese model ... but mine clearly says USA on it.. Story I heard is that in '89 they started switching production to the US but in the middle of this change they used Japanese parts at first. Some consider the Japanese models from that time period to be better than the US models. Its all good. Japanese or US ... I have enjoyed that guitar immensely over the years.
@@Havanacuba1985 Mine has stayed in tune all these years. Still good after 30+ years and a lot of playing. Only problem I have with it is that the bar is threaded and it screws in. Can't really lock it where you want it. But you can kind of screw it in till it gets tight enough so that it kind of sticks where you want it. A few years ago , the threads got messed up on it. I used a tap and die set to fix it and it works just like new. The threaded bar and "stiffness" of the trem don't make it great for flutter but it is otherwise a great trem.
I still have my original '88 HM Strat somewhat rare version single humbucker (the rarest version was the HS) bright white, rosewood fingerboard, TBX tone system, rounded heel, made in Japan, the only thing I don't like was the Kahler Spyder trem. My friend and coworker in '88 bought the HSS blue with rosewood. Now I want one just for my collection.
Marty McFly uses an Ibanez is a Roadstar II RS 430 when he tries out.
Thanks, I always wanted to know that guitar
My Shecter banshee-6 FR is in the same basic config, but the FR is 3" from the back edge. only one volume and one tone for Schecter. it is a screamer.
Nearly bought a pink HM Strat (half price for ~£350) with a single humbucker back in '93 from HW Audio in Bolton. Instead went for a (similar colour) Charvel 275 for roughly the same price, which outplayed it 100% (and sounded better). Wish I still had it.
You're only cool if you have the pink one.. totally getting one of these
I love them! I will probably not spend that kind of money on it, but I appreciate the original and updated aesthetics. I LOVE the gaudy STRAT logo, it's a bit like Fender is taking the piss out of themselves and that's hella funny :D
All things considered, it's still a dad-guitar now ;)
A hard sell these guitars when you can get better specs from others like Charvel, Ibanez etc for way cheaper.
Charvel is now owned by Fender...I'm 95% sure.
@@chadwickhurlburt6529 i'm 100% sure they bought charvel/jackson in 2002
@@rg2550zgw might as well get a jackson dinky or soloist better
Oh, if we're going down this road... c'mon Fender, bring back your Contemporary Series! Ideally with a more sane tremolo system than the 80's originals, but that would be fantastic to see. Especially in sparkling metallic pink.
They kinda did but issued it as a Squier. Not even close. My first electric was a Lake Placid Blue Contemporary SSS with the System 1 Trem. Wish I hadn't sold it. Bought a Pewter HSS with the System 2 Trem a year or so ago. All's well with my world again..
@@ThePedroDB Those trems were appalling but other than that those were some solid guitars :-)
This just doesn’t feel right without Rob, or at least someone shreddy like Rabea.
That headstock doesn't feel right
So true. Would be terrible if Rob was done here.
@@daddio307 well, it might be possible that Andertons doesn't want any of that Rob The Bully drama right now.
I think the video will have been made a couple of weeks back. Rob should appear in the stuff they are recording nowish. They all made the very reasonable decision to let the mayhem subside!
I don't want to see Rob anymore to be honest, his reputation has gone down at an alarming rate
Emotionally charged ending, guys. This was really great, honestly...
The other guitar player in my band in the early '90s had a pink one of these. Brings back memories.
I have an original 1988 Razzberry HM. I'll stick to it. But I do think it's cool to see some new ones.
This is one of andertons greatest videos of all time lol they talked about back to the future and star wars shit they even managed to fit in a nickel back joke lol
Nothing against Lee or Pete, but if you're making a video on shred, there's only one Monkey Lord for the job.
I love the Strat logo on the headstock! I did originally and still do. HM Strat baby!
Hey cap ! That shred strat fits very well with u, great impro!
Just another one here to add to the "bring back Chappers" comments! Come on guys, you need a proper shredder if you're going to be playing pink and yellow superstrats, get him back on the channel.
Pete is great, but eeerh. When do we see Rob again in these videos? You guys have the best chemistry, and it makes everything a joy to watch!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, glad you didn't actually get all shready (love shread) and the outro was a eargasmic dream.
It was an Ibanez Roastar II RS430 in the film, my very first guitar was an identical black one which has since been heavily modified and still my favourite guitar although in desperate need of a refret now. I bought another one a couple of years ago in green for only around £200 and recently sold it to a collector in Scandinavia for around £300 but they are very hard to come by, you see more of the HSS RS440's around but the SSS RS430's are quite the unicorns but still cheap if you can find one. interestingly i also own an original 1989 HM strat which was my first 'proper' guitar and they did indeed have a chamfered heel joint.
To me they are just Charvel's with Strat painted in the headstock.
Basically
Fender owns Charvel (and Jackson) so... Yeah.
frank hoxsey these existed before charvel was owned by fender
@@jackhorvat7979 I understand that. That being said, Fender now owns Charvel. It would be nothing for Fender to get the body's from the Charvel plant and slap a Fender neck and logo on them. To me they are cool but, not that amazing or different.
Nice, but rather have a genuine Charvel.
Well I don't know if I'm cool but I'm in my early 20s and I just LOVE my white HSS Fender Strat with a floyd for me it's just the perfect guitar. But you know what other peoples opinions don't matter if you have such a guitar. Just grab it and melt some faces. Keep on the good work \m/ greetings from Germany
DO a video between the og strats to the HM strats
PSA: The Floyd special radius is 12" as well as its corresponding nut. It does not match the fingerboard radius which is 17''. To fix this, you'll have to buy those little metal floyd rose shims, as well as have a luthier or qualified tech to slightly shave the metal nut slots to be properly radiused.
This has been confirmed by Fender consumer relations. Annoying oversight but not a big modification as far as mods go.
Hypercolors lol that’s a blast from the past
Those are really nice and I'd love to own a few. I do find the placement of the Mini Toggle Switch to be odd, though. I'd like it to be inline with the main Pickup Selector Switch.
The heal WAS just like those! The curved plate is correct too. From what I see, when I compare them to my 89' Razzberry (that's what fender called the pink) and 88' Teal, there are a few differences. First off, the coil tap switch should be black, not chrome. The humbucker should be a seymour duncan I think if memory serves, the plate covering the springs in the back should be solid, and the originals had Kahler 2720 Spyder trems. That's just what I see and based on memory on the pickup. I loved them when I bought them all the way back then, and I still love them now. Get one guys, you wont regret it!
Captain your solos have improved so much!! and....oh wait...I have a call....it's your wife....and she says you need to work on your endings. 😂 Just kidding, of course!
Loved how much fun you and Pete were having, and loved Pete's Jeff Beck inspiration and his new shoegazing pedal fascination. Keep up the great work guys!
Great intro lead by the Captain, and that ambient outro jam was amazing!
1985 Ibanez Roadstar II RS430BK
swix76 how do you know it wasn’t an 84?
Glad I have an old Korean made RG and a modern mim Strat. It’s the best of both worlds. I may have been born in the 80’s but I grew up in the 90’s so I like my stuff black. No crazy colors for me. Well unless it’s green because that’s my favorite color
"1.21 gigawatts!!!!!!.... You're going to need a lightning bolt to get that much electricity"!!!.......(wait a minute doc I got an idea)
The additional of the floyd isn't squishing the pickups, it's the 24 fret neck. On a Strat the neck pickup is where the 24th fret would be, so with a 24 fret neck it needs to be moved.
Anyone else notice the whiteboard behind Lee keeps changing what it says? It says LEAD !!!! on the close ups and it says fender on the wide shots.
So happy with my pink one! 💗 Love that Pete and I have the same guitar now! I have #169, so not far off 😁
You know Shredder from teenage mutant hero turtles? His favourite cereal is shreddies and shredded wheat. His favourite office utensil is the shredder. This is exactly the sort of guitar he'd go for because he's into shredding. The thing with shredded wheat is you add a bit of sugar on, and it tastes alright, yet cornflakes and rice krispies have shit-loads of sugar in and you can't even taste the sweetness.
Any ideas as to the pedal(s) Pete is using in the Outro? Some serious Buckethead vibes
