    To me most upsetting are sweden and ukraine because it just shows how much power the juries have. televoters didnt like sweden - it's still seventh. televoters DID like ukraine, its seventeenth. why????

    For me the act that was hurt the most by the juries was Ukraine. I really don't understand it. If they placed Sweden at No2...I can not understand Melovin was placed last. His song was modern, great production, his vocals were on point, his perfermance was on point. All like Sweden still the one song/act was placed 2nd and the other last. I am baffled.

      melovin was not my fave, but he was def better then Sweden. My country Denmark was also brutally slaughtered by the jury. I thought I was unique and different. But I think one of the reasons is that melovin was the first country on stage. So people kind of forgot it through the night

    I can’t understand why France was so low with the public. I thought that from two songs with message (France and Italy), Madame Monsieur would be preferred by the audience, so imagine my shock during the reveal of the votes. Ukraine was absolutely robbed by the jury, Melovin deserved so much more.

    • @nilerra8181
      @nilerra8181 Před 6 lety +19

      Italy had a powerful performance compared to France. Also MetaMoro are stronger performers live. We already knew that since National Finals. It wasn't a surprise to me.
      Super agree about Melovin :D

    • @Baaleex
      @Baaleex Před 6 lety +6

      I think people didn't understand well the message of Mercy (and even that the title is the name of a baby girl)
      This should be the role of commentators, to explain the lyrics and the story behind the song, and maybe that's not always the case, or people aren't listenning to them...
      Maybe with LED screens, it would have been clearer (but I loved the staging of the song)

    The role of the jury should be to provide some support through votes for entries that:
    - Have bad placing in the running order
    - Are from countries that don't traditionally have a friendly neighbours
    - Have artistic integrity that the public may not recognise
    - Represent genres that may not be the traditional pop that the public likes to vote for
    But fundamentally their voting should be unbiased and based on some minimal understanding of what the public actually likes. Why is it then that they continuously vote too generously for Sweden and Australia whilst ignoring countries like Spain, Portugal, Ukraine, Denmark, Finland etc that either had bad placing or don't have that many neighbours??
    Having said this, I do think that this year, despite the Jury and Televote being so different in parts, the overall voting results seemed somewhat fair judging by the success of countries like Albania, Lithuania, Ireland, Austria who I thought may be super underrated. I'm just still really sad about Portugal tbh. I also don't think Italy coming 17th with the Jury is a bad thing, they're supposed to equalise entries that do too well from the running order, and I'm sorry but i think France had a similar style of song but did it better and if the Jury kept it so that both entries got a respectable and deserving place then I'm happy.

      TBH i dont agree. Watching the eurovision throughout the 80's and especially the 90's is was almost a barroom joke when it came to the televoting. Every year regardless of how bad a song was, neighboring countries would vote for each other. It was making a mockery of the competition. The jury may not get it right either but the combined votes make a far more fair result then just the televote.

    • @cassandramcbride7007
      @cassandramcbride7007 Před 6 lety

      Jury is required. But they need to fix some issues. While televoting uses the neighbour and pop/dance factor, the jury is using radio friendly/sales factor. Both are neglecting the quality of the songs.

  • @jonahwilliams4966
    @jonahwilliams4966 Před 6 lety +10

    For me this year it didn't bother me where what country was placed at the end because this year there were so many good songs. after the show, me and some other german fans cheered for Michael Schulte by the green room for how well we did and then we saw Claudia Pascoal crying and us and some other eurovision fans sang O Jardim for her. It was such a magical moment.

    I don't think that jury needs to go, but either the ratio of jury/televote should change to the viewers' favor, or the judges must be picked much carefully (maybe followed by EBU approval or something like that). 'Cause, for instance, in Ukraine some of the "experts" have been doing show business for like less than 5 years. And I believe that Ukrainian jury is not the only case. Still thank you for your support for Ukraine! Love y'all guys!!!

      @alsersz Před 6 lety +3

      I agree with the more strict selection process for the juries. I'm from Spain and our jury members were so random, to me only 2 of the 5 are ok for the task. Honestly, we had 2 members that have been in music industry for HALF A YEAR. That shouldn't be allowed

    • @greybearCPH

  • @KajsaBernhardina
    @KajsaBernhardina Před 6 lety +109

    It's obvious isn't it?
    The reason Austria and Sweden was first in jury is that those are SAFE songs. The jury loves safe, trendy and radio-friendly. Ironically this is also the reason why Sweden and Austria did not do well with the televoters.
    Televoters love fun and risk-taking (Denmark, Ukraine, Moldova, Czech Republic, Israel) but they also love deep and raw emotion (Italy, Germany, Lithuania).
    Cyprus is neither fun, risk-taking nor emotional, but they rode on a wave of hype before the show, being marketed as a potential winner and benefited from it tremendously - the almost tie between them and Italy proves it.
    France scoring low in televotes... well, it wasn't a big surprise. It was too cold and dark on stage, too militaristic outfits, they looked like they were going to a funeral - most of their potential voters called for Italy (warmer, more emotional, normal outfits, better running order).
    The fact that France and Italy didn't get more jury points is the biggest red sign in many years: Yes, the jury is useless and needs to go. We have had enough of entitled friends of the producers deciding who has the most marketable song. Now let Eurovision be democratic again!

    I am so tired of juries rating high songs which are radio-friendly and synthetic (like Sweden or Australia). They can appreciate something different but only if it fits some conservative standards (like Portugal last year). They don't appreciate extreme music genres in ESC and they don't appreciate what is new and pushes the boundaries in the Contest.
    This year's jury winner was the most regular and anonymous I could imagine this year in the line-up.

    I enjoyed Mélovin's song, and it's very catchy and original as well. 😄 However, I couldn't understand what he was saying some of the time, but I have to admit his English improved a lot over these past few months. 👍👍👏👏 Biggest robberies for me were Finland and Bulgaria. If Finland had gotten in the top 15, I would have been okay, but second to last? Seriously? It has a stronger message than several songs that placed above it. Also, everyone was talking about how Bulgaria would be screwed over by the juries, but no. It was the PUBLIC that screwed them over. The very same people that said the juries would ruin Bulgaria's chances. It definitely deserved top 5 or 10. Still angry.

    I do think the Jury could be helpful but only if they dropped the "radio friendly" reason out of their votes and focus more on the quality of the song/staging/voice performance. Why should a Eurovision song be radio friendly? It is not a radio contest, and the songs should not be made with only the pre-parties at mind or the possible future monetary drain from radio broadcasters.
    And it wasn't even my favourite song (far from it), but what surprised me the most was the low position of Finland on the Jury vote. When I was watching the performance I felt like many things the singer did were to scratch points from the music experts (singing upside down, crouching down...) buuut nope.

    I don't want to analyze televoting score and jury score. I just want to express my opinion about the main points of the contest.
    Israel is marvelous. Song is really catchy, and negative reactions to its "chicken features" confirm it. I can't stand when someone writes about Netta's lack of talent/voice. Okay, you don't like her song, performance or appearance but you have to respect her and admit that she is a great vocalist. Watch her a capella of "Toy" at the press conference to make sure.
    Cyprus. No comments. It's one of the most overrated participant ever. Yes, dancing is stunning but that's all. Song is more than ordinary IT'S JUST LIKE ALL POP SONGS WHICH ARE PRODUCED NOWADAYS. Moreover, at the beginning it sounds like Bulgaria in 2016 (song "If Love Was a Crime").
    Austria. I've got such an uncertain impression about it. One of the strongest voice of this year, even though song reminds me of another song - Marlon Roudette "New Age", especially chorus. So it isn't a particularly good one in MY top, but deserves to be in top-5.
    Sweden caused my resentment. I totally agree with televoting. Benjamin has a unique high voice and his choreography is perfect but SONG is my nighthmare. I cringe when I hear it.
    Ukraine was totally underrated. The results of juryvoting made me feel like WHAT'S THE HELL WAS GOING ON. Melovin wasn't my favorite however I had noticed him, his song and perfomance. Yes, his English was a little bit confusing but I compared his perfomance at the National Selection with perfomance on Eurovision stage and found that so much work had been done in terms of improvement of Melovin's pronunciation. So it's still obscure to me.
    And the last one is Portugal. I fell in love with this amazing song. I have been listening to it every single day. And I prefer live version much more than studio. It sounds so authentic with these cute imperfections like quavering voice. Although I accept the fact that the song is not "eurovisionable", so the result was clear and expected for me.
    Thank you for reading it :)

    I think the split results are interesting and natural, because at the end of the day the jury may vote for what they consider quality, but it’s somehow difficult to set personal taste aside. And if it’s about taste, it’s normal that we have such differences. But I like this system of 50/50. It’s quite fair for me. Anyway, my final result would be a lot different from the jury’s and televote’s. Many that didn’t even qualified would be at my top 10.

    Do you really think that Italy was put aside by the juries because of the subtitles??? That's English-speaking privilege! Many casual viewers do not speak English or Italian so maybe them having subtitles in German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese among others DID help viewers to understand the song and maybe that is why it did better than France. Juries on the other hand have something against Italy and that's a fact.
    I don't think the problem with Sweden was the ultra polished video clip but the song itself. Sweden keeps on sending the same formula of white young boy with radio friendly pop and we're tired of it.
    Australia's song wasn't bad but the staging was all over the place so it was a well deserved place by the televote.
    And to finish: Ukraine and Portugal were robbed too which basically tell us that the juries ARE NOT SO PROFESSIONAL so what's the point? They saved Albania but how many other did they hurt? I don't think we need to erase the jury vote but they need to reduce its influence or make the process more transparent because clearly they need help.

    I love watching just Will & Deban :) Just always so fun and warm to watch, as you can tell their friendship and charmarderie is not forced.
    I think the juries score with what they think will be popular with the televoters! I expected Ingrosso of Sweden to finish in the top five with the televoters, and not Rasmussen of Denmark, whom I much preferred.
    Ingrosso did as well as he did in Melodifestivalen because of his looks and charm, but his performance was smug and if you don't have likability to compensate for weak vocals, you're not going to score which the public.
    I'm glad Austria got the recognition he deserved. I'm more with the jury than the public on this one.

But looking back at the voting in the televote only era is easy to see why they came back and hopefully they are in to stay (ideally with some improvements). it wasnt a eurofan type of song. For them it lack of the predictable marks, like climax and contrast between slow peace and fast rhythm... And since most of them dont bother themselves to understand the concept of the songs, it comes with one definition for them "boring". This was why jury was introduce to try to point it out the quality, but now it proves that even the jury falls. Im not against the jury, but like televote, it have its own thing, instead of been fair. Im happy that this year, we had so many different songs, that sadly in a few years, it will be like 2017. Guys, thank you for this video.
    William, what is happening though, weren't you really loving the Italian entry?
    Did the staging really make you forget about great things you acknowledged about the song, before?
    Idk, they are the same powerful performers who wrote this song, and whose only purpose was to come to and deliver the message. They found the way which worked (apparently) excellently.
    On the other side, about the juries, generally, if we criticize the juries, should we not be thinking a bit about the overall standing of the songs in relation
    to one another?
    We cannot look at it based on its individual ranking but it seems more critical to look at it in a relation to other songs and ask
    "How did Italy (following the example) got ranked lower than - Norway, Australia, Chech Republic, Moldova, Sweden, Lithuania, The Netherlands by the juries?". I repeat, by the juries.
    I understand their professionalism and me being biased, but in the end of putting rationally things on the paper (2+2=4) I still cannot understand on
    which terms evidently great voices, melody, lyrics and powerful performance were not enough to place IT in top 10, juries? I cannot say it is political because
    I do not know.. but Houston, we do have a problem because it was not just IT.
    Oh, and something else is wrong... On the final evening of the Eurovision there was another attack in France, and few days ago another ten
    people died in a school shooting in the US. Let "Non mi avete fatto niente" be your reminder of our need to stand up for
    these people. Always. Thanks Italy.
    I am not Italian but indeed a human being.

    I have always said that EBU saved eurovision by introducing the 2 semifinals-format and for returning the juries after the disaster contest of 2007 - Ever since the contest have gained more popularity, we have seen a significant reduction of joke-entries/protestsongs, the overall quality of the music in the contest has never been better than it is now and this year was a final prove of that NO country is safe anymore, so if you're going to succeed in the contest you have to send a good song and you can no longer just rely on your neighbour countries, but have to appeal to the whole continent to get a good result.
    - So NO we shall never have a contest again without the juries, because that will just be a major stepback to a time where eurovision was dominated by loud, aggressive songs and was ruined by a completely predictable voting pattern.. It has sure changed for the better and eurovision is actually exciting to watch nowadays..
    So stop all the nonense about dismissing the juries, because you don't even realize what the consequences will be. Fx the fact that the public voted Finland through to the final in 2015, Armenia in 2011, Bulgaria in 2013 and Macedonia in 2016 are great examples of how dahm important the influence of the juries actually are..
    And sure neither the juries or the public are perfect - but we need them both to balance each other out to create an entertaining contest where good music are in focus!

    I just saw the first semifinal with a guest one more time and I have to say, there is one blockbuster performance after another. Austria would have done way more better with the televotes in the grand final if Mr. Boerkman didn't had killed the performance with the running order just as last year Nathan Trent. In the semifinal the televoters gave one point more than the juries did (116 to 115) due to the more favourable running order. The point gap in the grand final can only be explained by the influence of the running order on televoters, which doesn't play any role with the juries. I don't think the final outcome would have been different, but the gap wouldn't be as big.

    The juries have a purpose. I think it's better to have both because the worst impulses of each are balanced out. You could kinda see the quality of songs overall slowly going further and further down from 1996 (last year of just juries) to 1999 (first year of all televote) and then spiraling more and more until 2008, one of the worst years I can think of. Then juries came back in, and it started to even out a bit.

    I think Australia and Swedens televote results were deserved for me personally. Jessica is so so talented but I think the stage performance was empty. If I'm honest I actually thought she looked a state. The issue was more staging and styling here and that made it all very basic and forgettable.
    Sweden again nothing wrong with the song and all that let's be real I'm not slating that. I'll be honest the song and performance came across as cold. He came across as quite obnoxious it was really off-putting through the performance. Sweden was the one performance whilst I was in the arena I couldn't focus on and just went on my phone. There is the problem with Sweden the inability to connect past 30 seconds

    Bulgaria placing 14th? Ouh, God, that hurts! 😪 But I cannot pick a song and place it behind our place.

    Eurovision went from a year when jury/televote/awards were in sync to a year of complete caos during the votes! even in the semi finals... The televoting is more open to different music styles. That's my take on this. Sweden and Australia, even with me having no doubts about the quality of the artists, I am forced to listen to this type of music everyday. I don't want to but I just need to turn the tv or the radio on. It's the background music of every shop. If I don't like it then why would I like it now?
