I actually can understand the juries putting Blanche so low in the semi. If you would have gotten better later, bad luck. Her voice was extremely shaky during the last chorus in the semi, and if you don't give your A-game in the jury show, they will mark you down. That's just how it is.

BELGIUM: Guys, it should not really blow your mind that Belgium got only 40 points with the juries. It actually perfectly reflects the overall feeling from the press room throughout the two weeks. Press were scrutinizing her heavily, especially when it comes to the staging (which press critisized as being too simple and dull) and the vocals (if you re toched by it or not, the press wasn't thrilled about her vocals and how they compare to classically schooled vocalists). And let those two things be important jury points. So I think that juries put the performers above the song most of the time, and not the other way around.
NETHERLANDS: And not surprisingly, the above two points are exactly the same reason why Netherlands basically 'scored the other way around'. Juries loved O'G3NE, because of their flawless, classic harmonies vocals, because of a toned down, but still moody staged song, and because of their fierce presence. That helps with juries. But not with televoters, because they need to be 'emotionally grabbed' by them. And that's not what happened. I think the near-to-perfection executed song resulted in a bit of a pastiche with televoters. Perhaps the same with Australia too.
So let's not slam only the juries, because many of the televoters choices are questionable too. I hope you guys arementioning this, because we do need the juries. They only need to be improved! And perhaps, just maybe, the press needs to make separate ranking? A ranking of what the more serious, cold-hearted jury members do, and a ranking of what the more emotional, less critical televoters will do? Then you understand the results better as well.

I felt a bit vindicated with Cyprus getting through despite all the eye-rolls it had been getting, because I'd been low-key stanning the whole time. Not a favourite but imo a worthy entry. I also find that it worked better live and it had a good performance and nothing else really sounded like it in the semi.

Aleksander Petersen there is an allocation draw where the countries are divided to 6 bowls eg. 1st bowl the Scandinavian countries etc ... in each bowl they put the countries who tend to vote for each other so there is a smaller chance for them to be in the same semi final...this year Greece and Cyprus were randomly selected to be in the same semi!! but in 2015 they weren't and even then they both managed to qualify

Can we also add the tagline "Who did televoters help or hurt"? I mean, more and more the juries get brandmarked as villains or baddies, and that's not entirely true. There is a very good reason why we have re-installed the juries back in 2009:
    A) Make sure that countries who come up early in the running order, don't get forgotten by televoters. We saw that entries like Belgium 2010, Finland 2011, Norway 2014, Netherlands 2016 (and 2017)and even Sweden 2015 (the winner) were suffering from this unfair aspect.
    B) Brings me to B), since televoters do not judge all 26 entries, and are certainly not ranking all entries in TOP 26 order. Televoters have 2, maybe 3 hot favourites, and all countries that end lower in their lists are exposed to the sheer 'randomness' of televoters. It's one of the reason Netherlands got so many 9th to 14th places with the televoters this year, resulting in a very disappointng overall result.
    C) Yes, even juries tend to vote for their neighbours. And perhaps juries in Eastern-Europe are more willing to give their top mark to a neighbor (Greece vs. Cyprus - Armenia vs. Georgia) than in Western-Europe (Netherlands vs. Belgium). But come on, that has been normal ever since there were juries from 1956 until 1997.
    D) Brings me to D), since juries are certainly not prone to diaspora votes. The Turkish or Armenian diaspora vote is not automatically going to Turkey or Armenia anymore. And the Polish immigrant vote - which people talk about a lot, but which influence I find greatly exaggerated - isn't that pronounced either.
So please, let's embrace the fact that we have juries too OK? 100% televoters are not good, but 100% juries aren't good either. This mixed system is Always better. But I do think the system as used between 2013 and 2015, was the best and actually filtered out huge discrepancies: One has to do well with BOTH the juries and televoters to get a high score. Makes sense no?
Lastly, I am calling for a serious expansion of the national juries from 5 people to 10 people (5 aged higher than 40, 5 people younger than 40). And add for every jury an 11th independent jury chairman who's not allowed to vote, but who oversees the correct collection of the votes from the 10 jury members.
I am curious what WiWiBloggs thinks of this.....

There should be certain criteria for jury. They should improve the first impression problems (great show with poor songs, or running order problem), and add professional judgment about song, such as: the lirics, uniqueness, may be they should even point weather it is smth new for eurovision (even if it's old for music as a whole), even vocals is the second thing (because it would be like judging models appearance instead of the clothes she's wearing). They should junge a song. I even think that it should be a blind audition, for all the effects not to desturb them. And the most fair would be just to give numbers to songs, not names of countries.
But the problem is that no one needs it - the more buzz around the contest - the more advertisement. Politics/not politics, fair/ not fair.

I agree with almost everything you said about Latvia, but imo Agnese actually has a really good, unique voice and yes, this particular song didn't exactly highlight it. Still, her vocals were better than some of the other contestants vocals.

I still cannot believe Finland didn't get through. Biggest mistake since Mei Finegold.
Do you think that we'll see more balladeers using smaller, island stages like Salvador (and Joci's violinist) did?
Much as it pains me to say it, I think Svala might be in the running for the Barbara Dex award, particularly given how good she looked in the video.

I think the debate about wether we still need the juries or not should be bigger than ever now. The differences between televoters and juryvotes are way too big not to doubt the jury's credibility. I still think that the most juries are somewhat corrupt...

Australia must've been amazing in the jury semi, because on the live show Isaiah was appallingly bad with that cringeworthy note. That's where the difference comes from.

Bogdan Honciuc - If he stuffed up in the jury show then he would've been out for sure. The jury show performance was more solid and he hit that whistle note. Isaiah has proved that he isn't unpopular as his televotes score after all, because thanks to eurovision he's picked up 90k + followers on Instagram and just received double platinum for his single "It's gotta be you" in Sweden. I expect Kristian and Isaiah to do well after Eurovision. Team Kristian & Isaiah.!

Isaiah has a beautiful strong soulful voice. He just wasn't given the right song and staging to showcase his voice. They also made him change parts of the song which wasn't needed. He only had to stand in one spot and sing. The cover of "Halo" that he sang at the Wiwi Jam was truly amazing. I've started following him on instagram recently. He is much better than his eurovision performance😊

Your country was bad live in final. I mean Alex didn't hit a note right and he was vocally shaky.
But Romania was really enjoyable, Australia package was flat.
That's the difference, it wasn't due to vocals.

  • @JSchultze94
    @JSchultze94 Před 7 lety

I dont really care about any other countries injustices then Finland and Australia tbh. It all made sense, Belgiums vocals weren't enaugh, musically it sucked in the first semi, but she really stepped it up in the final aka the rise in the jury score! Estonia was the most awkward and weird thing I have ever seen, so glad it didn't made it.
Finland: Even if the song is not imediate it should have still have been in the juries top 3! They should understand quality music when they hear it and Finlands song and performance obviously had those qualities! Saving the likes of Australia baffles me to no end. The song is average and the jury rehearsel was cold and stiff and not that great vocally. It is obvious that they are afraid for Austrailas part in the contest, so lets just give them our twelves and tens and make them happy...

Though radio-friendliness is the prorogative of juries, in fact it's televoters who really determine the radio-friendly factor. So I am not surprised Belgium is so low with juries and so high with televoters. Blanche may have a unique voice but her song does not require strong vocals.
At the same time Australia is BORING! but the song lets the performer show off his vocals, and the jury points are understandable here at least. What is not understandable is that how Georgia's song is much lower than Australia's. Because Tamara has a great voice and a song to showcase it.
