I would be really interested in finding out what would happen to sales if they ran a 1500pt "fun" based event with a couple of little prizes for painting and points for diffrent things in different rounds (rather than a hardcore WAAC tournament).
I always ended up buying something and trying to finish an unusual army before fun events (even if I had 5 armies already)

My LGS took a unique approach with "upselling" Old world.
    1) They committed to "legacy" factions being available to organized play.
    2) They then pulled kits that were cross functional to old world for AoS and displayed them next to the old-world release section
    3) Then they demoed the game with Legacy armies that had supported AoS kits.
This really drove interest from a purchasing standpoint and now have about 20 people in escalation league for Old world.

To be entirely fair, there are a number of armies which you could buy from the AoS kits... or at least you could if they were not "temporarily out of stock". Dwarves, dark elves, Empire (if you use the new freeguild stuff), vampire counts, beastmen, warriors of chaos, daemons, skaven, ogres as examples.

I'm super excited to start playing Warhammer Old World. I grew up always wanting to build an army and play Fantasy but couldnt afford it during my early teens. As an adult having built a wood elves army for a 2nd edition AOS cities army, im excited to rebase them back to play Old World. The fascinating prospect is the concept of them releasing "new" army boxes (the preview of the orcs and goblins). Now I am basically going to wait for the release of Wood Elves, or High Elves if the chance comes along

Myself and three others who have never collected a full Warhammer army for 40k, HH or AOS are getting into the hobby properly because of the old world. For us the setting is the attraction, we love the historical influence.

  • @The_Captain40k
    @The_Captain40k Před 7 měsíci +3

I think there’s a few factors that might make this re-release different and help it take off:
    - a lot of the people who were into it as kids and left the hobby in their late teens/early twenties are now back due to 40K 8th Ed and have a lot more disposable income
    - paints and painting techniques have come on a long way from when fantasy was in its prime so it’s so much easier to get an army together.
    - AoS and 40K have evolved into these competitive simplified rule-sets and OW offers an escape from that for people who prefer crunchy or narrative-driven games.
    - people like me who love the AoS models but hate the AoS lore can now buy the cool army of their dreams using gorgeous new dynamic plastic models but for the game they love.

    • @The_Captain40k
      @The_Captain40k Před 7 měsíci

I would also expect the reason sales of models were low is that not everyone wanted TK or Brets people are waiting for or are already buying the faction they prefer. For example I’ve picked up a load of seraphon, slaves to darkness and gloomspite for OW and I’m waiting for Empire to be released.

I certainly dropped $$$ on the rulebooks as I already have 6 armies and really just need new movement trays. I also feel that most WHFB players have had 9 years without official rules and have learned to make due with 3rd party, 3d prints and ebay restorations. I didn't get into the hobby when WFB was a thing, although I wanted to when I was younger, AoS never piqued my interest so I'm coming in with no existing army.
O&G wasn't the hardest to get an army going in currently available plastics, but it's somewhat limited, basically just Night Goblins. I'm burnt out on 40K's competitive focus, constantly moving meta and ever adjusting rules, so being able to slowly collect, paint and assemblemam army has been nice, and this is the most productive I've been in a while.

I never had interrest for fantasy battle. I had a few 40k models in the early 2000's. The codex pictures were making me dream to play games with such models and tables. But too expenside, too much effort in painting and too much time to prep.
In 2017 i jumped the gun and started to collect and paint 40k with real intent.
Few years later, i have a few 40k armies all painted at an intermediary level.
What i like about the old world is it looks and plays different. AOS is 40k with a few differences, i don't want that. So i bought 2000 points of tomb kings and thanks to modern painting techniques and gear, i am 100% certain i can make the oldest crusty skeleton looks dope.
Regarding how popular the launch went, i got my starter box because i preordered within 5 minutes on a small shop, but the rest is on order.
Maybe it was not as successful in NA because of pricing, but in mainland europe, my 2k TK cost me 350€ VAT included.
I also think that new methods of painting (contrast) and gear (air brush) + tutorials and inspiration on the internet made the hobby more accessible. I think it had the potential to become more popular than 30k.

I immediately jumped on the opportunity to build an army that I always wanted to have.
The first Army I had, I was given and I love, but the first Army I chose was vampire counts. I sold a pile of stuff and I bought a Vanguard box for flesheater courts. (I always loved the Stirgoi)
It's not a lot, and I know I need more stuff, but everybody always seems to jump straight to the average game. There's nothing wrong with starting off with a 1000 point game, and this edition of the game you really don't need a lot of models. The reason why I jumped to vampires instead of running with my chaos Army rebassed was because I was getting frustrated with what I can field. All of my ideas and everything was just not working out because I had too much stuff and too much of an expectation, so I felt that it was probably best if I just start fresh.
I'm happy with my choice, but I will also be playing my chaos Army.
I think you need to jump on an opportunity to get people into the shop and by the army that they've always wanted. Take in trades of old models and sell nostalgia, but also remind people what they've been missing.
I could never get into AoS... I tried so much. A lot of the models are nice, they were different and had a lot of conversion potential.
But it was the spirit of the game that's somewhere along the line was lost in translation.

We might be small fish compared to the relentless churn of 40k, but I think the game will be a success. I've got a game in a couple weeks with old friends I would never have imagined playing tabletop games with again. They're even buying rulebooks and miniatures!
Chris also doesn't discount at all, which hurts when you're dropping like $400+ at once. Might be a reason he had less interest. 401 and other places blew through their big allocations of starter boxes and rulebooks.

I think one of the issues with model sales is the availability of excellent 3D sculpts now. There are some amazing looking Tomb King proxies out there, and they didn't cost the earth compared to the over costed second hand market.
My gaming area it's a slow burn - we were just whelmed by the whole thing, we were presented with 20 year old minis with a 2024 pricing structure, a tonne of the stuff was made to order, the whole release just felt half arsed. Legitimately, "hey we have a new thing, get excited!" and then "oh, where do we go from here?"
I got into wargaming as Fantasy was being phased out so the end of 2014 by this point, so I missed out on Tomb Kings - I loved the aesthetics, so I went into a GW store on launch weekend, and then the weekend after, to pick up an Tomb Kings box. Just to scratch the itch of wanting to paint them for the last decade, and they had nothing
Literally not even a space on the wall to show that they were sold out.
I was so stoked to play fantasy, I was even a part of the game testing team, but I've zero interest in it now. It just feels like an after thought

18:03 : I hope people won't assume The Old World doesn't work because people play with their old armies... OF COURSE they play with their old armies, people like me who are picking up the game now litterally cannot buy their models. They are either out of stock or just do not exist at all. For instance I cannot play the game right now, because I don't have enough core models for my Errantry Crusade full cavalry army, and that's from someone who's playing one of the only two factions which have been released.
I love the Warhammer fantasy setting, I'm aiming at building Bretonnia and Wood Elves armies (since Vampire Counts won't be released). I understand that models with come with time. I just wish Games Workshop would provide more information about what we can expect in the future. Will they ever release a box of Bretonnian Knights for the core of my army, or am I doomed from the start to buy stuff from second hand from people who bought the "core set", even if I litterally just want to throw my money at Games Workshop ? Will they ever release some Duke on Hippogryph or should I give up and just use a Royal Pegasus ?
The opacity on the release strategy is saddening me, because I want to play, I want to play with new minis. I just cannot. And I have to wait, not knowing if the day will come.
Edit : I know that you can always buy alternate miniatures which do not originate from Games Workshop, but I want to support GW and The Old World, I want a full coherency on my models, and I do not want to kit-bash for these armies I will build as I am entering the hobby. I also don't want to buy old armies on Ebay, I want to build everything with my hands from GW models.

I ended up spending less than half of what I had planned because everything sold out before I got in front of the queue. Really enjoyed listening to this as it brought a new aspect to the table for me which is the thoughts and feelings from a hobby store owner. I agree with you that the two armies chosen for launch in Old World would clearly have been the poorest sellers since they never really made their way over to AOS, which for me is the clearest evidence (obviously the fact that Bretonnians didn't get an updated army list is further to that evidence). Chaos Dwarfs which surprisingly were called legacy and have a pdf army list hadn't even survived the life cycle of Fantasy.
Having said that I have decided to commit to Old World (as an old fantasy player who never got into AOS other than some of the models which were used for VC troops) and have picked up about US $1200 worth of stuff between the two armies which I never really had any collection on apart from the 5th edition box Bretonnians and a bunch of older lead men at arms and knights. I spent over $1000 between two LGS and about $160 with GW direct on made to order items. When they canned Fantasy, I wasn't very actively involved in the hobby anymore but was still sad to see it go as I would occasionally dip my toes back in and buy some stuff. In the intervening years and the birth of my son I have built up more nostalgia for it which is clearly what GW is banking on. The next hurdle will be finding the time to paint all of that stuff and after that finding people to play with. Contrast paints which weren't around the last time I painted will hopefully make the painting process much quicker.

But Just as it comes out I looked it over and found a game that's REALLY had thought put into it. I found myself liking what I saw. An almost perfect balance of ease and crunch that is missing in more modern games. It just felt good. Had my first test game last weekend and again the game felt right. I'm probably the most gung-ho about The Old World in my local area, and yeah, I've got old armies. I've spent a lot of money on the old world, but most of that has been 3rd party 3d printed bases ordered from an online vender, which doesn't put money in GW's pocket nor does it support the local gaming store. I did spend a lot on rulebooks, so GW got some money for me, but I got the ebooks because I didn't trust GW's distribution to actually get physical books out on time to everyone who preordered them, so that didn't fund local stores either. I have bought some new models - tomb guard, snake riders, the new models, the now-in-metal ushabti with bows. Ordered those through the local warhammer store, so that supported A local store, but I didn't get those from the local indie shop because I wasn't confident their order would actually some in. I didn't even get the big box with the new dragon because the entire rest of that us$300 box was old skeletons which are models I don't want. Not even because I have them, I disliked those old skeletons so much even back in the day that my old tomb kings army exclusively used the old 7th edition vampire count skeletons.
I haven't played any games in the store, because I've been rebasing for the last few weeks, and while there are other players interested in the game many are also still rebasing, or trying to figure out what/where to get actual models for an army. I love the rules for The Old World. looking through it, it might be my favorite edition of Warhammer Fantasy. I want it to be successful as a game. But I'm not sure I see how this game survives after the initial launch buzz dies down. I expect it will look a lot like the middle earth strategy battle game - a game that exists, with rules players who already have collections can access and use, but with no new players because buying in from scratch is near impossible - the models are ancient and often out of stock if they're available at all. A game with some products that can be ordered, but that occupies zero space on local store shelves and gets no promortion or direct support from store managers.

I moved to other games that I could play 3 games of and leave me wondering if i could squeeze in a fourth...
... and now? It's those kitchen table games that scratch the itch. Big sweeping cinematics with little-to-no granular rules slowdown.
I'm liking what I've seen of the new TOW rules, with modern elements, and a reduction in granularity at certain stages. CANNOT be arsed with measuring wheeling though 😅

I was semi-interested in the Old world, but looking at how expensive the models are, especially the metals (AUD$100 for 3 Grail knights), I'm unfortunately going to skip this.
I feel like Fantasy died due to the high cost of entry, but this feels like the same mistake all over again. My opinion is that they should have made all new models for the factions (expensive, I know) and used their 'made to order' waves to inject nostalgic old models into the ecosystem, as being 'forced' to buy ancient sculpts for new model prices (Warhammer prices at least) is insane.
My local scene saw a massive decrease in interest when the pre-orders went live, and people saw the prices. The only people who are still interested in playing are those with armies they purchased back when Fantasy was still around, or people using fully proxied armies via 3d prints, kings of war models, or alternative company models.

I wanted to get into tabletop wargaming summer 2015, but unbeknowst to me Old World blew up :D
I couldn't get through no points in AoS, so I started dabbling in 40k. Soon after AoS got points I started getting into it. Now I don't play 40k, only AoS and some small games.
Arrival of the Old World is not a huge deal for me. I like rank & file idea, but I don't want to: a) paint old minis b) use AoS models for Old World c) use 3d prints too much
I might give it a go at some point if it doesn't get squatted.

I would agree with you there to a degree, and GW definitely used TTW as a marketing tool to stoke hype for the Old World, HOWEVER I think that was actually a mistake.
Old World is not at all a game aimed at people who enjoyed TTW. It's not a continuation of the bombastic, high-fantasy, monster heavy version of Fantasy that TTW was very much inspired by. Instead Old World seems to aim at a much older audience, like they said in the video, it's mostly aiming at people who already had armies. I think it is much closer to the historic part of the miniature hobby, than any other game of GW before.
You can already see the backlash currently with people making up conspiracy videos and lose themselves, trying to justify why GW excluded certain armies and how it was all AoS' fault and how the AoS team is trying to handycap Old World, ect. When in reality, Old World pretty clearly aims at a much more niche and focused group.

If anything, over the years Total War and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay have solidified the idea that I don't need to, or want to, go through the blood and gold phase of tabletop again with Old World. Those products and formats completely scratch the itch for me. I'm heavily invested in AoS and Adeptus Titanicus, and honestly just don't have the time, money, or shelf space for ToW. I'm glad it exists though, and sincerely hope that other old guard in my age bracket / demo who chose to be Big Mad can finally find a little peace.

Four years ago I started slowly building an all metal orcs and goblins army; originally just to kind of prove to myself I could do it, and in part because I never had the money to do an army when I first discovered Warhammer. It evolved into building an army I could pull from for Kings of War, Oathmark, or any edition of Warhammer. I’m really looking forward to taking my time and enjoying The Old World with good people instead of the tournament-crazed WAACies.
I’m not rebasing 200 orcs and 100 goblins though. Movement trays are the way to go.

  • @Shadoweyed09

I enjoy Chris, and the FGLS perspective makes sense. I have a massive collection that half fits the current Old World (other than rebasing/ movement tray redo) so I'd try it, and it looks fun. That said, I'm not sure if I will, unless I find that person at the FGLS that is ready to play.
Great discussion and topic, I would love to see this actually take hold, but being someone that was amped through 8th for what ended up being "killing the game" there is that defense up. I continue to try and get new people into it with older editions or free, legacy adjacent styles.

I do not understand how you could burn out on Warhammer. I've also been doing this for decades but never did I have the feeling of being done with it. I have at least half a dozen ideas for a new army each year. And I'm not fast enough to do six armies per year. So it's an infinite source for me.
Especially since there are so many unexplored regions in the world. Arabia is still on my list. Albion. Fimir. Kingdoms of Ind.
I also do not understand any fascination for AoS.
Which is not meant as a slight. Just a fact. I don't get it. Does nothing for me. And I think I'm not alone with this.

@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames yeah, but now that I've listened to you talk about it some more, I'd say your "mistake" (obviously not a mistake) was to focus on the rules aspect. The list building. You say in the video that this is what keeps people coming back. But I don't build lists. I just think of ideas that interest me. Which units do I like thematically, which units inspire me to do crazy conversions? And if I have an idea for something truly unique I'll try to find a unit that has rules that most closely match my idea.
But I never look at it from the perspective of building a competitive list.
I'm building my army with themes and ideas that inspire me, whether that's an effective list... I don't give a crap. :D
And I'm just trying to say that if you start your armies not from that list building point but by asking which themes you want to explore you'll never run out of inspiration. Because the rules construct has boundaries. There's a finite number of possible combinations. But there's no limit to your imagination.

Hate to say this. I really do . However the independent gamestore is just a thing of the past. There are too many games and products available now and gameshops can't carry it all. So naturally a person has to turn to online buying. Gamers are very impulsive in general with they're spending. Add in the fact lots of gamers are insular and only play in they're own group of friends and some are frankly sick of meta and the competitive environment, I just don't see a path forward for the independent shop, especially if the economy continues to tank.

If they continue to release things on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule I think that's enough to keep interest going. This game feels more comparable to MESBG than AoS, 40k, or even WHFB so talking about it's footprint in a store, yeah it will be small. It's definitely a slow burn release. We're just over 2 months post release and I'm still painting and expanding my army. Time, effort and money required for all of it, but I've played a bunch of games and had a great time with it.
