Dr Ali Mazaheri - What is brain fog and why do we get it?

  • A team in the University’s Centre for Human Brain Health investigated the link between this mental fog and inflammation - the body’s response to illness. In a study published in Neuroimage, they show that inflammation appears to have a particular negative impact on the brain’s readiness to reach and maintain an alert state.

If I am being honest it effects your brain so much that I can't even remember when I got it I feel like I am in third person like I am automatically doing everything in life without full consciousness I am disconnected from reality and no one understands what I'm going through but you even forget you have it whilst having it

If anyone here deals with anxiety from this issue then I can assure you recovery is possible! And I know this because I am currently dealing with sinusitis and anxiety from bad sinuses issues from deviated septum and swollen cavities. I recently started getting anxiety and panic attacks which have caused my life to turn into a dream like hyper awareness state. However I have been trying to clean my sinuses and relieve some pressure and everytime I do it I feel like a new person and close to normal again. So this tells me my brain is just battling/fighting through this sinus pressure/issues causing this brain fog and I just need to get it treated (hopefully surgery) to relieve it! Hope this makes people feel better

I've been dealing with brain fog for quite some time now. Unfortunately, I can't remember things. I use to have a very good memory. Not only that, but I stutter over my words a lot, I lose my train of thought, and I can't think of certain words while having a conversation. I'm not sure how long its been (because I can't remember), but I think it started around when covid started. At first I blamed it on the fact that I've been more isolated because of quarantine. However, even though the world is beginning to open up again, I am still experiencing this brain fog. Now I think it might be my diet, my birth control (nexaplon) or perhaps bad sleep. I'm going to try to fix my diet and sleep. If that doesn't work then I'll take of my nexaplon (its implanted in my arm for those who do not know). I'll try to give updates on here (if I remember)

When people ask me what does it feel like my description would be, it's like drinking an entire bottle of vodka or being on a bender for a couple days and you're at the recovery stage of sobering up somewhat like a hangover without the vomiting and headache, but in my case, I'm just stuck between the recovery stage and never feeling sober "normal", sharp, witty, or present, it's really bad in the mornings, I need to wake up hours before I originally have to because I'm so disoriented., then throughout the day i'm just living in third person, it's also given me anxiety, it's only until the late evening I feel relatively normal, and I've tried everything to counter this feeling since 2018.

This nicely breaks down what I described to my doctor in terms of not being able to distinguish one priority from another at school, etc. Now onto an anti-inflammatory diet to try and get everything to calm down and find out what things exacerbate the inflammatory responses. It's nice to think there's an end in sight and I can have my life and brain back

If you don't do this already, then try the following:
      1. Stay away from electronic screens. Even an hour a day is really bad for you. Change jobs, do whatever you have to but stay away from electronic devices.
      2. Sleep 8 hours a day. If you are only used to less than 8 hours a day, then gradually increase sleep time and make it 8 hours.
      3. Eat absolutely no processed foods. No takeout meals, nothing. If you find this challenging at first then gradually reach this state by decreasing frequency of eating processed foods progressively until you become comfortable living without them.
      4. Do Intense cardio exercise daily.
      5. Practice breath meditation daily.
      6. No alcohol/drugs/any other such stimulants should be consumed by you. That's really damaging

I have this amd it is so hard to live with, think I got it in the lockdown as I was isolating on my own with my 5 year old boy. I detached from life and became severly depressed and now I can't focus on anything, my anxiety has gotten soo much worse and I can't even work whilst I have it. It affects my ability to do day to day tasks. I don't even feel present anymore constantly zoned out i cant think straight and I'm tired. I now get suicidal thoughts everyday. It's painful to live with and I'm a single mother living on my own with my boy so every day is a battle, I'm just so tired

I have been diagnosed with CFS/ME and suffer from brain fog and have done for a while. I used to be able to sit at my desk and work non stop for hours without getting up and hold my concentration for that amount of time. Now I find it difficult holding my concentration for more than 15 minutes at a time without a break. My mind then wanders and fades. It's worse when I'm feeling physically tired or I have a sudden wave of exhaustion. It's quite debilitating when a couple of years ago I was physically and mentally fine but just started to have tiredness and fatigue creep in and then obviously the fatigue contributes to the episodes of lapses in concentration and brain fog. I find myself losing my train of thought often throughout the day

I don't think brain fog is what I have.
Sometimes when I'm just going throughout life I'd start to zone off, like just walking, talking to someone, even when I'm doing something I find interesting.
I don't even think about anything when I do this. Everything just starts to become muddled around me, I can't hear voices, I can't see, I even forget to blink.
Sometimes I even feel a pressure against my head that feels like it's keeping me there.
I keep hearing that it's because of depression, loss, emotional stress and whatnot, but I'm not experiencing any of those things. When I start to space off it's hard to pull out of it, even when someone tries to pull me away I just go right back to that state. When I finally do get out of that state I have to blink a few times and get my awareness back
I'm just worried this could happen at a time when I really need to pay attention
So if anyone can help please let me know what you think

    Very interesting.
I found that my brain fog (which is something I've had on and off for over 10 years) is definitely improved after a period of good sleep and mental rest. I've found its much worse when I'm recovering from very strenuous exercise (eg I would be nearly useless the day after playing basketball _every week_ ). And I find that milk and cereal in the morning - especially wheat cereals - give me heavy brain fog for about 3 hours after eating. These things certainly could all be related to inflammation.
If inflammation is a factor, shouldn't anti-inflammatory meds help?

I've had brain fog for over 30 years now. Took rave drugs in 1992, felt a huge over pressure in my head, then instant fatigue. I've spent £1000's and nothing comes close. Ritalin helped as a trial but the brain fog is still there. Had brain scans etc, neuro tests and nothing. Any ideas? Thanks.

So... It seems given this comment section, I think people are gonna relate to this, and some have the same problem. I've been having brain fog the last five weeks. I'm currently FAILING my f***king degree because of it, so believe my when I say I'm describing my symptoms precisely. Here is my case. I'm usually a pretty focused person, I need to be focused all the time in my everyday life. So this is not normal. I believe it's a psychological reaction. So i have depression. I am not complaining, I know millions of people have it, just saying for the info. I was feeling sad lazy, the kind of depression laziness that comes with sadness like when you dont want to do any efforts anymore. but I still felt that i could focus if i wanted to. Then the numbness came; gradually and in one afternoon I had a freakin wall in my head. That wall never fell since that afternoon, leaving me mentally disabled.
I have difficulties to concentrate, as in, I have unability to focus on anything with intensity for more than half a second. When I have one, which isnt always the case, my thought stream is constantly dragging my "mind eye/mind aim" on it. When i don't have any thoughts, I just feel numb and empty but still unable to focus my mind on anything. I also have a feeling of "emptiness" behing my eyes. I feeel awfully weak and stupid. And it's really a brain problem like it's not emotional. I can clearly feel hox not normal I am, and all the things that are wrong with my head compared to normally. It's like as If my brain had decided that focusing on anything wasnt worth it anymore.
I guess people who have it will understand.
Thinking willfully seems to me like something impossible to do, like an impossible task. Something I used to do all the time without even noticing I was "focusing". I was just focusing because I had too. It's like if it had become unable to lift 1kg. As i'm typing this I even struggle to follow my fingers typing on the keyboard, though i've been typing for years. It's really hard to describe.
It's not laziness. I WANT to focus. I need it to pass my degree. If I dont solve this, my parents will have paid money for a whole year of college for nothing and I will have disapointed then and not having any diploma. So believe me when I say It's not on purpose.
I've tried the following. Only one worked.
Once or twice I tried to say to myself "ok this is worth the herculean efforts you need to focus you HAVE TO DO THIS" and really really telling myself how I NEEDED to focus to that task. Like it was as vital as looking for food or sleeping. The weight of numbness flickered. It didnt go it just flickered. that's why I believed it's psychological. I tried doing this over and over again. The flickering keeps happening but nothing more, my brain remain a foggy jelly piece of shit. just slightly clearer.
Forcing my brain to focus. The first thing I tried. Didnt work. I end up bending the muscles of my forehead until it hurts ending up having like two seconds of continuous willful thought. Then I'm exhausted and it just vanishes.
Think "slowly". like meditating. for each thing i think, think it slowly and be aware of each thought that crosses my mind, even if it means being reaaaaaaaally slow. tought it'd work, but didnt either.
sleeping a lot. Nope. doesnt work
eating "good for brain food" no effects.
just stop doing anything for several hours and see if it improves. It doesnt, just goes on.
meditation. oddly enough, it kinda worked, but not at the same time. I'm used to meditating so my mind starts "being" with the breath out of habit, but at the same time I can't intensely focus on my breath it's like if I was focusing on it but lazily. usually when I do it I feel a powerful intensity that I don't have now. Like I can hear all the sounds nuances and steps of my breathing process. Now this is gone. To sum it up, my trained mind can still follow the breath by itself, but only to the level that it's used to do becase of training. Any attempts of the conscious me to say "focus better" or "try really following the brain more" remains completely useless. I have lost the ability to say "now do this" to my mind's eye.
I haven't changed my diet in the last months, and i'm sure it's quite a normal diet compared to the average. I don't take any medication... I don't have any mental issued besides the depression that's caused by pretty usual problems everyone has. I am perfectly sane...
I'm at the point where I have to write a freakin novel under a psychologist video on youtube because i cant tell anyone. How would they understand? "just freakin do it instead of inventing fake mental pbs" they'd say. And they'd be right. How is this possible? Why is it happening to me? Am I gonna waste my life and become a weak useless pile of trash because of some freakin brain fog? I mean if it lasted a month how long can it last? Years? I feel crazy writing this. How? and Why?
