@LawVS i think the media / youtubers are setting him up to fail. Everyone is hyping him up as the next big thing, so when he does arrive, fan expectations will be so high that he will struggle to meet them. He's not the first Mercedes Next Big Thing. We had Wehrlein, then Ocon, then Russell, even Di Resta back in the day, and im sure their were many juniors that never made it to F1. I think people need to let the kid breath instead of putting all this pressure and expectation on him

You never heard of him because you've never seen anything below F1, F2, F3.
He's truly special. What he's done in karting, F4 and Formula Regional is just different from what anyone has ever done since Max. And it's not just his numbers, is his attitude and his ability. Even in F2 this year, he is beating Bearman regularly (who is one of the best talents in F2) and with a Prema team that has began in a really bad form. He will deliver, 100%.
Also, he has his first F1 test tomorrow with the W11 and in late April with the W12.

I would like you to consider and voice your opinion on how McLaren, twice, caused a dominant force in F1.
It was McLaren that gave the green light for Brawn to get Mercedes engines. Which obviously lead to the Mercedes works team and then their dominance.
Then McLaren took Honda as an engine partner, got frustrated with Hondas progress and then booted them. Leading to Redbull picking up those Honda pieces, just as the engines were getting good.
So Redbull were finally able to ditch the Renault engines which were not the best, replace them with the Honda unit which by the end were basically on par with the Mercedes unit and now we have the Redbull domination.
    McLaren, their own worst enemy!

  • @mediumpete
    @mediumpete Před měsícem +24

Yeah, the general Antonelli hype isn’t catching my eye. He looks very “having a debut F2 season” right now. Were I running Brackley I’d have a much less hype-raising strategy and hire a driver to run the car for two seasons while Antonelli proves he’s worth the shot. My own opinion is that it is far too early to put him right in at Mercedes. FP1 runs will demonstrate whether he has the promise Mercedes want, but even then it will be a very fuzzy picture - I don’t expect there to be earth shattering results. Bearman made the most of his Jeddah chance, but that’s a whole other situation. Bearman has already had a go in F1, and as you clearly stated - the Ferrari this year is a solid item of car. What did impress me about Bearman in Jeddah was his work ethic and his calm approach given how quickly he had to settle in. We won’t know anything about Antonelli’s F1 chances until a lot later in the year and the bar has been set pretty high by the Ferrari/Jeddah/Bearman situation.

The problem with Mercedes is that they are too big-headed, the drivers want a long and definite contract, not a temporary fill-in before they find a reliable driver.
Maybe the tactic of giving short contracts worked when they were in their heyday, but now their opponent is Aston Martin no longer Redbull.
But Mercedes still does not realise this they still think they are the most successful team at the moment. They don't realise the contracts they offer are no longer as attractive as they used to be.
I'd bet Sainz wouldn't choose Mercedes but rather a lesser team with a longer contract.

Making the jump from FRECA to F2 is one thing, but having only one year in F2 then straight to F1 is another. The tragic tale of Carlos Sainz... Ferrari kicked him out for a marketing stunt. Red Bull don't need him, and more importantly, can basically wait until the Thursday of Australia to decide who drives their car (at least while Verstappen hasnt dropped a bomb). Mercedes would be a stop gap at best, unless he utterly destroys Russell or Antonelli crumbles under pressure. Aston Martin would be a perfect match, if it weren't for the joys of nepoti... Lance's masterclasses. RB2 wouldnt even be a bad fit but they probably just want to slot Lawson in. Alpine is a right mess, as is Sauber until Audi (and maybe even after). Plus Sauber and/or Haas might well take a Ferrari rookie instead. Williams would be a gamble with eyes on the horizon just like RB2 or Sauber/Audi.
In that sense it's almost the same options as Alonso, with the big difference being that Alonso's decided to stay with his team, the one option not available to Sainz.

While Sainz/Mercedes would be a marriage of convenience and a means-to-an-end for both parties, it's probably the best choice Carlos has because what else is there? As mentioned Audi would be a big gamble which could backfire on him, while personally I'd like to see Carlos at Red Bull that might be off the table because Verstappen and/or the Red Bull higher ups aren't keen on having him there from what I understand. I forget where I saw it but I read somewhere about Carlos possibly going to Williams but that would be a huge downgrade. PlanetF1 even had an article about him possibly taking a sabbatical in 2025 but that would be a very bad idea I reckon because there's no guarantee he'll get back on the grid in 2026. Maybe Aston Martin could be another possibility but I've not seen Aston Martin show any interest as far as I'm aware. So all in all I think Sainz should take the Mercedes deal if it comes to pass, it's surely better than nothing right?

Kimi was saying how way overly aggressive their F2 Prema approach on the setup was, trying to gain an advantage by taking big risk on setup with a new car (I guess its not my right to say more then that); however, its far to snappy on that tire (the videos look ridiculous, how quickly the tire lets go with no recovery) and it hasn't benefited the team with any extra speed. So much so that he and Ollie are working on a big change, so they will be starting from zero again on their baseline setup, more or less, but Hopefully that will make the weekends more straight forward.

So that only leaves Mercedes or Red Bull. Now Red Bull are a slight chance but does he really want to walk into the mess of Max, Jos and Helmut? Can he trust that Christian will be there in another 12 months to support him? If he could negotiate a deal that secured him a Mercedes drive that included 2026 then that is an appealing option with the new regs. Toto is praying to God that Kimi Antonelli is the second coming of Max Verstappen, but there is no real evidence for that yet other than pure hope. I'm genuinely wondering if, with the brain drain and the budget cap, Mercades will end up stagnating at the upper midfield like where McLaren has been, or even slowly fall down fully, for the long haul.
Especially with Wolff's leadership not having actually built up a team before from the get go, and losing resources and the Lewis fanbase (which... Lewis fans pretty much are the only mercades fans that exist..)
It really shows the difference to me, between Ferrari and other teams. Ferrari fans loved Michael, but they didn't disappear when Michael left, because they were fans of FERRARI, and Michael being there. Not fans of Ferrari, BECAUSE Michael was there.
Mercades doesn't have that lock on F1 Ferrari does though, so I could completely see them falling off as a possibility if they don't get new leadership or ace the next regs/engine regulations.
We'll need to see in 2026. If they move laterally or backwards, it may be a nail in the coffin for Mercades as the dominant team they are known to be, potentially permanently.
    Remember, this has happened before.
McLaren, Williams, late 90s early 2k Ferrari, etc.
