It is located in a landscape environment of great natural beauty, located in the Cuelgamuros Valley of the Sierra de Guadarrama in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Community of Madrid, 9.5 km north of the Royal Monastery. The architects Pedro Muguruza and Diego Méndez participated in its design; The sculptures correspond to Juan de Ávalos and Taboada among others.
Upon Franco's death, on November 20, 1975, his body was buried at the foot of the main altar of the basilica. On September 13, 2018, the Congress of Deputies approved the exhumation of his remains and their transfer outside the basilica.

Thank you very much for your visit and kind comment, my friend! History of Spain during the 20th century was very turbulent, like in Korea, we also suffered a civil war. This monument was ordered to be built by the victor to remember the victims, which is why this building is quite controversial here. I hope you have a good weekend 😊

Hola! It seems like I always wait until Sunday night to watch your videos, and this once was no exception. Yup, I have a cup of coffee to sip on too. 🙂
This was an interesting video given the historical context. I don't know much about the Spanish Civil War, but I'm actually old enough to remember hearing the name Francisco Franco on the TV news back when I was a kid in the seventies. After watching the video, I did a little reading online just to get an idea about the history of that time. Whew, pretty complex, but I think I got a little insight.
But anyway, as a memorial to the fallen, it's really a beautiful place. The setting in the mountains is really spectacular and the walk around the grounds was very peaceful. Good place for quiet contemplation. And the cross is very impressive! It made me think of the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Brazil. Just for comparison, I just looked up the height of that statue, and I was surprised that it's only 30 meters or 98 feet. Hard to imagine that cross is 5 times as tall as that statue! I noticed the statue beneath the cross is of Mary holding Jesus' body after it was taken down from the cross, I think this theme is called the Lamentation of Christ. Seems very appropriate for a memorial like this.
When you were walking around, I thought I saw what looked like some type of railway going up to the base of the cross. Interesting. Very impressive portico out front, but made of cold, gray granite. Again, it seems fitting for this kind of memorial.
Inside the Basilica, at 15:45 it seemed like the statues on each side were warriors with wings. I guess that's appropriate too. Since the lighting was kind of dim, I couldn't quite make out what was on the sides as you were walking toward the altar up front. It seemed like big murals, but I couldn't quite make it out. In a way, it almost seemed like maybe it was the Stations of the Cross? The small altars on each side were beautiful.
The ceiling painting was traditional and looked like it could have been painted many hundreds of years ago. Nice. Loved the chapel to the side. And all this was underground. Very unusual. 🤔
Great video. Enjoyed it. Take care.

Hola! I hope you had a pleasant week. I am glad that as usual you enjoyed your Sunday night with my tour, although as on this occasion the duration has been much shorter than usual, I hope it has not been an inconvenience when it comes to having your coffee in a relaxed manner 😄
You are right, the history of Spain during the 20th century was very turbulent and complex, it is logical that you will find it a little confusing, although I am convinced that with the information you have read about the history of Spain in that period you already have more knowledge than many spaniards, especially the younger ones 😆 The civil war was a transcendental event in the recent history of Spain, after which Spain lived through 40 years of dictatorship. And although it is a fact that happened a long time ago, it seems that among certain population groups it is still quite alive, especially when it is mixed with political issues. So there is nothing better to end up having a heated discussion in Spain than to talk about politics and also include the civil war 😆 (well, I think the same effect is also achieved if you talk about soccer 🤣) That is why this monument is quite controversial even today, some think it is a commemoration of that period in history.
But leaving aside all those political issues that personally do not interest me, there is no doubt that this monument (which also includes an abbey on the other side of the mountain) is grandiose and unique. It must be the only basilica in the world built inside a mountain.
Although I had seen it many times from afar, the cross standing out among the mountains, I had never been there before and was very curious to visit it. It met all my expectations and really left me impressed, especially the interior of the basilica. As you say, place where it is located is very beautiful.
Size of the cross is amazing, as I said before, it can be seen from a long distance standing out among the mountains.
Regarding the rails you mention, they are from a funicular that goes to the base of the cross but it was not in operation. It's a shame because I'm sure the view from there is spectacular.
You are right, the lighting inside the basilica is very dim and you can barely see the tapestries on the sides, they are copies of tapestries from the 16th century and represent the apocalysis, the small chapels are dedicated to different invocations of the Virgin. I thought they would look better. Maybe I should have gotten closer to them and filmed them in more detail. My fault!😔 The sculptures at the entrance represent two angels guarding the entrance to paradise.
Regarding the mosaic of the dome, you are absolutely right, great observation! 👍 They are inspired by byzantine and romanesque mosaics.
Thank you as always for your comment. You already know that I really enjoy reading it and answering it. Nos vemos! Take care.
By the way, this week I found out in the local news that the Archbishop of Boston, Seán Patrick O'Malley, was in Salamanca (where I live) to be named an honorary doctorate by Pontifical University, it is city's Catholic university. So as soon as I read the news I inevitably thought of you 😄
I hope this helps to develop more ties between Boston and Salamanca.
