🇬🇧 Ciudad Rodrigo, listed as a historic and artistic site, is an outstanding fortified town located in the west of the province of Salamanca. The city's urban layout was definitively shaped by the imposing medieval wall that surrounds it.
Ciudad Rodrigo, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, is a famous fortified plaza located west of the province of Salamanca. The appearance of the city is definitely marked by the imposing medieval wall that surrounds it.
Ciudad Rodrigo consists of two lines of walls that form an oval-shaped belt around the city, with a length of 2,200 meters and reaching 13 m in height in some places, and flanked by five towers. Of the eight gates that it originally had, seven are preserved today, of which the Puerta de Santiago and Puerta del Sol stand out. Although there are still remains of the primitive wall from the 12th century, what is seen today was almost entirely built. during the reform of the 18th century.
In the 12th century, Ferdinand II protected Ciudad Rodrigo with a great wall designed by the Galician master Juan de Cabrera. At the end of the 15th century, a second wall was built with large circular towers to house the old enclosure, and a ditch and counter ditch surrounding the city. On June 7, 1810, during the War of Independence, the city was surrounded by the French army. 6,000 men took refuge there and, after resisting the French troops with heroism, had to capitulate on July 10, 1810 before Marshal Massena's 50,000 men.
The medieval wall of Ciudad Rodrigo is practically intact, with its moats, gunboats, and some of its cannons. You can even still see the impacts caused by the French artillery on the cathedral tower and some other buildings.

Hola. Enjoyed the video as usual, but this week, instead of watching it on Sunday night with a cup of coffee, I decided to watch it on Sunday morning with my first cup of coffee. 😄 But I waited until Sunday night to write a comment, and now I sort of forgot some of the details that I wanted to comment on. 😅 Well, I'll do my best!
One of my first impressions on this walk was how peaceful it was, and it seemed like there were birds chirping the whole time. I noticed the wildflowers blooming in one spot too - red poppies I think. Spring has sprung, as we say. 😃The view from high up on the wall looking out at the mountains in the distance, and the rolling hills - beautiful.
The cathedral - Santa Maria, I think - well, what is a Spanish town without at least one magnificent cathedral, and this one is no exception. The entrance to the cathedral, with its arches and big door, is beautiful, and the sculptures above it are really impressive. Amazing to see those sculptures embedded right into the wall of the church. (around 17:00 i think). I wonder if those are saints maybe?
At one point in the video while you were walking along the wall, the view was amazing and you could really tell how high the wall is, and I kept thinking, whoa - don't fall! 😟But then I thought, hey, relax, if he published the video, that means he didn't fall. 😅
When you came to the Sancti-Spiritus Gate, I wondered - does that translate to Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit Gate? I loved the modern sculpture of Toro the Bull. 😄Well, at least I think it's a bull. Was that little blue sphere in the plastic case the Earth? The bridge towards the end of the video looked kind of Roman with the arches, but maybe that's going back too far? Maybe I'm mixing up my eras. 😃
Anyway, another enjoyable video. Take care and have a good week.

Hola! How have you been doing these last two weeks? I'm sorry that it took me a little longer to respond than usual, although I have an excuse 😄, I'm currently visiting another city, as you say, spring has sprung (it's the first time I've heard this expression and I loved it 😄) and fortunately weather is good here, so in a short time it is very possible that there will be a new tour available 😄
I'm glad you enjoyed my tour again with a cup of coffee (any time of day is good 😉👍) By the way, what you said about you writing your comment several hours after watching the video, made me think that that way is a good way to exercise the memory. It is evident that you have a good memory because you have remembered many details.
You're right, the whole tour was very quiet, as you have seen there were very few people because locals don't usually walk along the wall, which is curious because the day was very nice and it is an ideal place to walk and chill out. If I were in their place I would walk along there every day 😄
Regarding flowers, as I have already told you in other previous messages, this winter has been rarer than usual, very rainy and cold days have mixed with very sunny and hot ones. This has made the vegetation much more lush this year. In some parts of the tour (where the vegetation had not yet been cut) it was difficult for me to pass.
I agree with you, the cathedral is beautiful. It is in a Romanesque transition to Gothic style. In reality, most of the cathedrals in this part of Spain are from those periods, which is why many are similar to each other. Although the peculiarity of this cathedral is that the entire main façade has cannon impacts, because the town suffered a great siege by Napoleon's troops, it resisted for more than three months which allowed win time for the allied troops. If you see it again you will clearly see the impacts of the cannons.
Yes, you are right, sculptures on the door are the saints with Christ in the center.
Fortunately I don't film my videos with the camera attached to a chest harness, otherwise those types of shots would have been very risky and this would surely have been my last tour 😂
Yes, you are right about this too, Sancti spiritus means holy spirit in Latin. I'm not sure but I think that gate has that name because there is a town nearby called that and perhaps that was the door through which people went that town.
It will be surprising to you but that sculpture of a bull (it is called Verraco) is the oldest thing in this town... it was built by the first settlers 2,500 years ago! Although you are right, it could be confused with a modern sculpture, so after all it can be said that art has not evolved as much as we think.
Regarding that bridge, I don't know exactly what era it is from because I haven't found any information about it, but I think it must be from the time when that moat was built in the 15th century. Although the bridge that crosses the river and that you can be seen from the viewpoint next to the castle is from Roman times, although it must have undergone quite a few modifications throughout history... Although if you want to see many Roman constructions you will have to wait on to my next tour, I promise I won't let you down 😄
So see you in a few days! I hope you have a good week. Take care

@@WalkingSpain Strange that the locals don't walk there. I usually walk after dinner about 5 times per week, and I was thinking - what a great place for a walk.
I did't even notice the cannon impacts on the cathedral. I'll have to re-watch that part and check it out.
Wow, the bull is the oldest thing in town! 😅 Well, I thought it looked modern, so those people were way ahead of their time (as we would say).
Interesting about the rainy winter and the abundance of wildflowers and other vegetation. That reminded me of the first year that I lived in Southern California. It had been a long drought, but my first winter was extremely wet. In the spring, the wildflowers were blooming everywhere, even the normally dry hills and fields.
      Take care.

    • @WalkingSpain

@@bostonwalkdrive7763 I also find it strange that the locals hardly walk there, perhaps it is because the town also has a nice river walk and they prefer to walk there
I have the impression that California and Spain have a very similar climate, especially the coast.
      See you. Take care
