  • Michael Owen wishes he could give his 17-year-old son his own eyes after opening up on his family's pain regarding the incurable condition that has left his child clinically blind.
James was diagnosed with Stargardt - which is a rare genetic condition that occurs when fatty material builds up on the macula, the small part of the retina needed for sharp, central vision - at the age of eight.
Owen told Mail Sport in an exclusive interview that his son's diagnosis was difficult to come to terms with at the start and recalled breaking down in private after learning about the ramifications it would have on James' life.
