  • Patrik Laine was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, and looked to be a star for many years to come. However, his NHL career took a turn, and he was shipped off to Columbus in a trade. This was something that never sat right with many fans of the Winnipeg Jets, but I for one, am finally starting to find peace with it.

This is so random but Gabe Vilardi was my teammate in NHL 18 when I played my Be a Pro series in Kingston. He was an absolute stud and I had a huge soft spot for the kid so when he was traded to the Jets (my favorite Canadian Team) I was thrilled! Love to see him really shine in Winnipeg!

Is it safe to say we gotta start trusting the process when it comes to Chevy? Some of his moves have definitely made me feel sick to my stomach too, but for the most part his decisions seem to pan out in terms of yielding the greatest value for the team, which is impressive considering we have the one of the smaller markets in the NHL.

The team looked SIGNIFICANTLY more cohesive even immediately following the trade, even while PLD was still in quarantine. It became less about feeding Laine and more about team play. I honestly thought PLD was pretty good in the time he was in Winnipeg as well, and we got a great haul for him in the trade with LAK.

  • @Eskolol

Laine always had a certain reputation. Even back in Finland. Attitude was his biggest problem and most likely the reason why he hasn't grown into the player that people expected. Having altercations with junior coaches etc. Getting sent home from the U18 tourney for having a spat with the coach and shit.
He struck gold when he got to play with a mega stacked U20 team that included guys like Hintz, Rantanen, Aho etc. That team would've won the gold with a cardboard cut out coach behind the bench.
Getting to play with a superstar like Aho on the same line certainly elevated his stock pre draft.
Of course he did deliver in his time at the Jets also, but his confidence was sky high at the time. Winning U20, winning Finnish League and going 2nd at the draft. When pucks didn't go his way, his head couldn't handle it. I guess Laine is used to getting his way and when he doesn't it shows. I also think people expected a lot of him. He started his career on fire and fans expected him to get better and better. The pressure he put himself in was probablyh too much.
I do wish all the best for him. But a sports psychologist could do wonders for him right now.

I would like to remind everybody, that it was Laine's agent who advised Cheveldayoff that Laine would not be signing another contract with the Jets. So it doesn't matter what you think about the Laine for Dubois trade. The Jets hands were tied. Also, the first round pick Chaz Lucius has not jumped to the NHL, so the trade isn't yet done for Laine quite just yet.

Outsider here. It's hard to get fair value for a mercurial, disgrundled player. I thought Chevy did well in getting one young, talented, disgrundled player for another. It bought him some time. Then he traded that disgrundled player for a handful of potential, which can really be hit-or-miss. I'm glad he hit. (similar to the Trouba trade) Go Jets, Go Leafs.
