- When you need chocolate ice cream, no other frozen dessert will suffice. But which brand do you choose? There are so many chocolate treats in your frozen food aisle that you're likely to make the wrong choice if you haven't tried them all. After all, certain ice cream manufacturers have been known to cut corners to save money, either reducing the amount of cocoa in flavor of synthesized flavorings, cutting the butterfat levels, or otherwise trying to create a cheaper ice cream that still satisfies, at least somewhat. Fortunately, you don't have to settle. By our list's end, you'll know the best grocery chocolate ice cream to choose every time. These are 12 grocery store chocolate ice creams ranked from worst to best.

What's your favorite grocery store ice cream?
I loved Three Twins, but they went out of business sadly. I love Straus ice cream still. That is one of my top favorites. However, from your list I would go with Haagan Daz or Ben & Jerry's.
Wilcox Dairy, made here in Vermont. Can be hard to find, not all the big grocery stores carry it.
@@rockervt72 - what flavor?
Specifics pls...
My favourite is the Great Value Cookies n' Cream
Turkey hill
Blue Bunny might not be tops in your books, but after 5 days in a hospital bed on limited rations, a cup of Blue Bunny Chocolate was able to reignite my taste buds--and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Usually I prefer a double chocolate or a fudge chocolate, but that Blue Bunny was the best thing I'd tasted in what seemed a lifetime.
I like the salted caramel BB--can't get enough.
Breyer’s isn’t what it was years ago. Very disappointed to see that in the home freezer. Yuck!
Yea they changed something up after the 90s ish that has made it lower tier unfortunately it deff taste diff and obviously not for the best
I love Tillamook ice cream as much as their cheeses. The ice cream is so creamy and rich. I buy their vanilla bean all the time, best vanilla ever.
Gotta try! I love Turkey hill ice cream tho! And for a more affordable option HOOD ice cream is my go to. I’m weird and I usually eat my ice cream melted. So it’s gotta be very creamy and rich flavored. Häagen-Dazs is also a go to when I have money to spend !! I can easily smoke a blunt then eat the whole pint 😂 I also find it a little thinner if that makes sense
For an non-premium supermarket brand, I love Friendly's Forbidden Chocolate. It's a dark chocolate ice cream.
I'll eat any chocolate ice cream. Yum.
You picked up the wrong Kroger chocolate ice cream. Chocolate paradise is not the best Kroger Chocolate ice cream . You need to pick up some Kroger "Death by chocolate" ice cream Now this is supreme Chocolate ice cream from Kroger.
YES ... Yes ... YES! Totally agree!
At one time, Turkey Hill made a flavor called Death By Chocolate. It was the best, most SERIOUSLY chocolate ice cream I ever had, but I guess it was too intense for some - it went out of production years ago.
YES I REMEMBER THAT
Their peanut butter swirl is what I'm currently hooked on.
Turkey Hill is probably the best ice cream brand i have ever tried. Im very sad its not available down south. :(
@@mattdajedi It just came to where I live in KY. I live in NE KY though. Close to OH and WV border. It comes from PA so it isn't too far from me.
Tilamook Ice Cream is from Oregon specifically Tilamook Oregon. I am an Oregon native and love the Tilamook brand
I've seen it here in PA at Redner's Markets but haven't tried it, yet. I might give it a taste!
@@MrDan708 I was underwhelmed by it.
Don’t refer to Haagen Daz “pints”. B&J sells pints (16oz). Haagen Daz deceptively sells 14.5 oz “pints”.
14 Oz "pints"
I wouldn't buy ben and jerrys if it was $4.99 a gallon. Their politics are a big turnoff
@@bobdbeck $4.99 is more than I will pay anyways….
Tillamook icecream is the tops!!
You are right, it is very good but is it worth almost double the price of Turkey Hill? Haagen-Dazs and B&J are great but are also expensive compared to the others. Halo top is a joke - it's just whipped full of air so people can eat the entire pint without feeling guilty about it.
You could just eat what you like, it's all subjective.
Private Selection's Chocolate Ganache. Funny how Mashed mashed tried the cheap "Kroger Brand" ice cream and not their better quality "Private Selection" brand. If you get the chance, try it.
Aaaaaaamen! I also like their Private Selection Denali Extreme Maximum Fudge Moose Tracks and their Private Selection Southern Butter Pecan is to DIE for!
I love Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food. It’s perfection.
Hudsonville is the best ice cream on earth, it's rich, creamy and smooth
Yes. Chocolate almonds is the best ever.
Really, so subjective. I've had most of these and flavors vary with what crossed my palette prior. Having an alcoholic beverage, coffee, soda whatever will change the taste. My bottom line is I like Dark better than Milk.
Tillamook is an Ice Cream that I haven’t come across in my store , however since every product of theirs I’ve tried has become a favorite in flavor & quality I believe it when I heard that Their chocolate ice cream was voted “the best” tasting in a National taste test in store brands… I have no reason to doubt it, had I known they produced chocolate ice cream.
I am going to track it down and enjoy a taste of “The Winner’” 😄
I agree with the beverages. Weirdly, I like a tall glass of lactose free milk or chocolate milk to go with my lactose free chocolate or vanilla ice cream. It tastes so good. Like a deconstructed milk shake but lactose free since I have dairy digestion issues.....
The darker the better.
North of the boarder we have Chapman's, which is not only great, but also treat their workers well. We also have the Kawartha Dairy, which also produces great ice cream. At least that's in Ontario. Not sure about the rest of Canada. If Mashed ever wanted to do a spinoff channel called Mashed Canada, I'd be all for it.
Turkey hill is wonderful
Absolutely my favorite 🫶
Never heard of it
Never had their chocolate, but Turkey Hill peanut butter swirl is my current fave. Tastes amazing and I had a bit of milk and a scoop of peanut butter to it. It's reasonably priced as well.
Thank u
Legit eating kroger deluxe brownie and cookie chocolate ice cream as I'm watching this.
😳 wow - yummie🤗
You should try Aldi's Specially selected Chocolate only 5 ingredients and a great taste.
shhhhhh!
Vanilla better.
Um... ingredient is by weight. Do you actually want cocoa to be in the top three or four ingredients for choclate ice cream? Think about that for a second. So your making ice cream, you want cocoa to be higher in weight than lets say, sugar, milk, cream, and eggs? So.. if we just used sugar as the one it is higher than. Your scoop will be more bitter than sweet, and thats not the same as bittersweet. It would also be so high in fiber, it might as well be psylium husk supplement. Actually, that high of a cocoa powder amount would not only be more fibrous than metamucil, it would likely be considered a caffeine product at that time. Enjoy!
Do they still make Bassett's?
I actually think Baskin Robbins is the best pure chocolate ice cream on the market!
If you like peanut butter try Turkey Hill peanut butter swirl. Add a bit of milk and a scoop of peanut butter and it tastes like a rich peanut butter milk shake
I always try ratchet brand ice cream so very good
thats a nice Oregon surprize
Well, this is certainly more informative than the ATK review.
Love chocolate ice cream
Love the Trader Joe's chocolate premium ice cream and also the Tillamook is also a favorite. Lot's of super expensive specialty brands are sold where I live, but to me, these are better.
Love Blue Bell
Wonder what kind of a hatchet job would be done on Carnation or Arctic Zero brands?!
I love blue bell period even the mint chocolate which I’ve always hated but blue bell is the bomb
You should have mentioned Swoon! It's an HEB original. It's up there with Ben & Jerry's and Blue Bell in my book.
BnJ too woke for me
Luckly more local ice cream shops are selling their brands in stores and thats what I have been buying.
What about Whole Foods house brand chocolate ice cream? It has gotten rave reviews in other surveys.
Mashed: what up?
...thats the one ... fantastic Chocolate Ice Cream ...
Tillamook is great! Raspberry White Chocolate is a favorite.
This flavor interests me.
I can tell you at one bite which ice cream are best!
The ones that don't give me a head splitting headache!
Most ice cream manufacturers save money by cutting down on the cream content and what happens then is that instead of ice cream, you really have ice milk!
And I get another head splitting headache!
No damn Graeters (out of Cincinnati), then this comparison is void. Graeters is hands down the best ice cream in the nation. Try it and you wont go back!
high and watchin this
Tillamook for the Win!!! It's the best I've had from the grocery store!!
Sounds to me like a comment about the Mashed reviewer!
Two words : Blue Bell ! I rest my case
Their vanilla is good too
Can't get it everywhere but Straus is the best the only make vanilla bean and chocolate we will buy bryers natural not to bad only one gum
...theres amazon's Whole Foods chocolate ice cream 365 I think ... expensive but WOW ...
I thank G-d my taste buds can’t tell the difference between grocery store ice creams. I can enjoy the least expensive brands.
Yes, Tillamook for all flavors...
Walmart stopped offering Tillamook ice cream 😢
none of these brands use chocolate..only cocoa powder...I always make my own custard based with good high percentage chocolate and some cocoa..since the late 70s...so I can't remember a store brand that's close..Jeni's has no eggs and tastes flat...maybe Van Leeuwen has one
Shoprite is pretty good.
Kroger was fine, as I remember!
They don't send ice-cream to astronauts. Any food goes with them.
Perry’s ice cream , hands down, is the best ice cream
No doubt, Tillamook is da best!
If you have a Publix near you, get their house brand, Chocolate Trinity. Best chocolate ice cream in the universe, bar none, fight me!! It has Mackinac chocolate, whatever that is, swirled in, and mini fudge cups. Better than I'm making it sound, it's just high quality. I'm usually not big on chocolate ice cream, going for chocolate chip cookie dough or strawberry or the rare vanilla, but that just SLAPS!! Tempted to beg to go there when we're running errands this week. Sounds really good right now. I'm really surprised it's not on a list that includes Kroger, another southern staple.
Mocha Chip.
That is all
Not a big fan of chocolate ice cream. Anyway, the only ice cream I'll allow myself to have in the house is Halo Top (or Rebel or something)...
I’ve Cream my favorite food group.
Ice
Tillamook is sõōœøòöôó good!!!
Why deceive people? OF COURSE cream, milk and sugar appear in the ingredient list before cocoa. The list goes in order of most used ingredients. Make me an ice cream where there's more cocoa than sugar or dairy and let me know how it turns out, lol.
Haggen daz. Is the best and a ripp off too
Purity 🍦 is the best, hands down
Häagen-Dazs 👍👍
Hate to disagree...but Breyers is awesome
I used to love Breyers ice cream, but since they had been sold to Unilever, they went down hill fast. I even called the Company to complain about paper particles in my "so called'" Half gallon. Of course they apologized and sent me a coupon for a replacement, but I am done with them. Just a memory now of how good things "used" to be. SMH
I prefer Great Value over Breyers.
I enjoy Häagen-Dazs ice cream, but I find myself not buying it very much because it has trans fat in it. This makes me feel so disappointed because I love this brand, but I just wish that they didn’t have trans fat in any of their products.
If you’re trying to lose weight, do NOT eat ice cream directly from the container! Scoop out a measured serving size (about 1/2 to 2/3 cup) so you don’t mindlessly eat the whole pint at once. Just because Halo Top has only 300 calories in one pint doesn’t mean the serving size is one pint.
... I try to use smaller bowls then fill em full has to be portion control there somewhere ...
95% true.... except for Blue Bell, is a wack ice cream just like Blue Bunny.
Can everyone stop being biased towards Good ice cream and so what if halo ice cream isn't that Good I'm sure it's Good so I disagree
They are all mediocre ice creams now, because if they made a good ice cream nobody could afford it. All the good ones are tiny pints and cost more than one hour of salary. They're more expensive than filet mignon steak per pound. 5 bucks for 2 cups?? Wow what a deal! Eat it now, and kiss your retirement savings goodbye.
Yikes
In Kroger's defense, they should be at the bottom. Kroger makes more than just ice cream. These ice cream companies at the top only make ice cream, so it should be better. It's not Ben and Jerry's ice cream, toothpaste and pain relief. They have 1 thing to perfect. Kroger might not have the best anything, they have adequate versions of everything. Cut them some slack.
Two words: Haagen-Dazs.
two additonal words: skimpy expensive
Haagen dazs all the wayyyyyy
Not Tillamook...Blue Bell all the way...
TILLAMOOK IS TOPS !...RIGHT HERE IN THE GREAT NORTHWEST...HURRAY FOR OREGON !
I like Tillamook, and a PNW brand called Snoqualmie--Mukilteo Mud is the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had.
Please don't faint, with this economy Wal-Mart will do just fine.no complaints . Enjoy
Not sure why Breyer’s is on a list of top ice cream brands, as it is Frozen Dessert not ice cream. Gotta be made with cream not sadness to be considered ice cream. Most of these brands aren’t available here in Canada but Breyer’s is, and it is bottom tier of all the “frozen dessert” products.
Sometimes a scoop of cheap quality frozen dairy dessert just hits the spot. But yeah, Chapman's is far superior. Even some of the store brands are decent.
Breyer's is made with cream. Maybe we don't let you Canadians have our cream?
Breyer’s is made with cream here but the amount is so low it can not be classified as ice cream. It has been the case for a bunch of products that used to be called ice cream but had to change to frozen dessert
@@lant7123 Why would we want your hormone infused milk?
you actually quote other reviews? I can find a positive for every negative you quoted, so who's right? 6 reviews so far and they are ALL bad?? That's not a ranking, it's a pretty vanilla massacre. Maybe I don't need a "complex flavor or bitterness" so my preference doesn't matter, just YOURS.
Most ice creams made by Tillamook are over processed and taste fake.
Hah
Tillamook…. I have them pass their farms. It is a wonderful site. Instead of cows, standing in muck, they are laying on fresh straw. They are clean of mud, even when it is wet and there’s mud all around. They truly look pampered. The coals are not shoved together in paddocks overcrowded, as in so many dairy farms, or what should be called dairy factories. The cheeses are equally high-grade. You’ll see on their farms, brown swiss, Guernsey’s, jerseys, and a number of other quality milk producing call breeds. The one thing you’ll see that’s absolute is Holsteins, the blue milk cows, with lower butter, fat and high water, Contant giving twice the milk as some of the breeds that Tillamook cows produce. If they use their cows milk, with a high butter, fat, adding cream is a necessary. The rich milk is sufficient in flavor and texture.
In fact, despite being on a tight schedule, when I pass through their farmland, sometimes I have to pull over if possible, just to watch the cows, grazing on green grass in the pastures, or peacefully, laying on fresh dry straw in a paddock, which is not overcrowded. So few dairy calls are put out to pasture in this country that have available to them such rich grass.
Presently I’m renting a house or a Farm, my landlord takes good care of his land, and several times a year he feeds the land fertilizers, which includes solarium and other minerals, important for cattle, which are grasslands have long been depleted of. His pastures are visibly superior to a number of farms in the area.
I don’t agree with any of this. I
Ben & Jerry Chocolate Therapy all the way. Accept noting else.
Say No to Ben and Jerrys!!
Overhyped Haagen Dazs chocolate ice cream is awful. Pale brown, weak flavor and totally overpriced.
...and to be honest not that creamy. Has an ice water texture compared ro better ones like Hudsonville and Stroh's.
ben jerrys is gross...
Another ice cream video???? I hate chocolate ice cream 🤢🤮
Crystal talbott g mail and coloring activities related to the whole family sad that
Chocolate is rated as the most popular flavor of ice cream!
Aldi has an excellent Premium Chocolate Ice Cream.
