  • It's back to Hornby we go to both satisfy a request made to me several months ago and to check out this charming little shunter. I was asked by many different people to do a review of a smaller loco, a beginner's loco. And so here she is!

    A quick search on google and a helpful forum post reveal that Hornby's loco is based on an industrial shunter built for the Dowlais Ironworks in Wales in the early 1900's. The body has been lengthened to fit Hornby's generic 0-4-0 chassis, but otherwise is surprisingly prototypical. Great channel, Will: hope to see you back soon.

    i like the brunswhick(?) green.
    we have such fun with locos like these at the model railway club.
    we have it bombing around the layout at full speed.
    watching jump points and falling down an embancment to the lower track.
    and the great thing is that there really robust.
    yay!
    i'm the 1000th viewer!

    Nice! These things can be supersonic! Brilliant things... I have a bright pink 0-4-0 - I turn the lights of in the layout room and you can see a whole light-show of sparks! The motor in mine is very heavy and with extra weights it can pull 6 coaches! amazing.... they really are awesome little things! Yours is decently detailed as well! :) Awesome!

    I got my Hornby Collector's Club 2011 loco last week, and it runs perfectly, it's the same class as this, in a gorgeous Midland Railway maroon, numbered eleven. I'd say it's a great engine. :D

    Basic or not, for a person like me who lives in the US, who can't get good Hornby stuff so easily, this would be a golden treasure to me.
    1) I need more engines on my layout
    2)...ITS SO CUTE >

    @joetorsneyTrains - refer to the instructions that come with each model. But in most cases it's just a case of getting underneath with a screwdriver.

    @InterCity82  Před 13 lety

    @modelrailway01 - I'll upload a video on the proper layout when I'm ready. For now I've still got lots of other videos to get through first.

    @trainguyrocks - it is possible to DCC these locos but not easy as there's very little room inside for the chip.

    Cool video, I have a few of these 0-4-0's and they are actually quite good locos.

    I'm definitely planning on buying one of these, because I own at least 3 of these Shunters, and they would make a nice collection of 0-4-0 Industrial Locos! Also you can get these online for like £14.00 or something, very good prices, but you can expect why, because they're for younger enthusiasts.

  • @InterCity82
    @InterCity82  Před 13 lety

  • @InterCity82

    @GeeksvilleStudios - it could easily putt 3 coaches yes. I think it was about £15

  • @InterCity82
    @InterCity82  Před 13 lety

    @SuperMarioNJ - ALL working engines are referred to in the feminine context. This dates from times when only men worked on them. For a man to say "oh yeah, he's gonna need to be in for a while" was confusing and other men thought he was on about an actual man. For him to say 'oh yeah, she's gonna need to be in for a while", all men instantly knew the man was on about a locomotive that needed work doing to it.

  • @InterCity82
    @InterCity82  Před 13 lety

    With this particular shape of loco are/where there any steam locomotives in existence which this particular shape loco is based on? Hornby seems to have done a lot of these type locos over the years. Personally I quite like them but I agree with you saying about them being primarily juvenile locos. Great video as always

  • @trainlover658
    @trainlover658 Před 13 lety

    Well, they're basic, but pocket rockets on wheels, infact... if all industrial tank engines ran at the speeds she ran, coal mines across the country would be emptied in a matter of minutes, lol. Hornby should really look into re-designing this little engine, like fitting hornby toby's chassis instead of the 0-4-0T style, infact, you should give it a try, cause it fits perfectly, and looks terrific :)

    I wouldn't call it a beginner loco bc it's cheap and small, what if there is a person whose been working on an HO/OO scale railroad, but can't afford an expensive locomotive. Even elite model railroaders buy cheap locos and rolling stock bc usually that's enough especially since EU Freight rolling stock is generally pretty small. Huge fan!! Hope u had use of this comment!!

      This is based off of a real locomotive called a Class D Tank Locomotive. There are quite a few pictures of them. I believe two were built, and they were unfortunately cut up, but luckily people took pictures of them. Hornby simply made up most of the paint schemes they put on these.
