- Yes, I KNOW 9 is not a prime number - I blame the sun (too much of) Now called the 'Mixed Freight' set, this train set is Hornby's defacto DCC beginner's set - featuring 2x DCC factory fitted locomotives, a small rake of rolling stock, some track and of course - a DCC controller. Whilst the overall quality of the set is far from premium, for someone wanting to enter the world of DCC, this set makes for a great stepping stone.

i have weatherd my bp wagon and class 08 and the set got me into the hobby
witch is amazing and i have 5 trains on my layout :)
Great video Will as usual. Great that you get two locomotives in the same pack, track, cars, and DCC!! great value for customers
Will amazing as per usual cant wait to see what you come up with next
Thank you so much for doing a tutorial for the DCC
Thanks for reviewing this set Will. Was thinking of something like this when I dive into DCC.
great video as always i would also like to congratulate you on 4000 subscribers!!
I totally enjoy watching your videos dude. In fact, its been enough to get me back into the hobby! After losing my job in the recession I was forced to sell a lot of my loco's (heartbreaking), but now (and with the help of a new job) i'm slowly buying them back from modelshops. Thanks again.
Amazing set!
You have a great sense of humor!
Keep up the great videos
Excellent review as usual.
Thank you very much for your excellent video.
Thank YOU for the comment!
+InterCity82 wow. I'm not the only one! I thought everyone who had this set had the 08 and the J86 and I was the only one who had the 08 and the 3F.
I'm new to model railways and I'm trying to build a layout with a number of different types of train. I found this set perfect as a beginner because it introduced me to DCC . As is said in this video the shunter and loco are fine for us beginners. It didn't take long for me to want more so I bought a Virgin Pendolino and more recently the Flying Scotsman. With a few more pieces of track I soon had 2 oval circuits and watching the Pendolino and the Scotsman going round the track and reversing them into sidings is fantastic. Everything came into life. So for what it's worth I thorougly recommend this set for beginners but you will soon want newer DCC locos.
Great info as I'm about to buy this set. Cheers.
thanks for the comment! And it sure is a great stepping stone into DCC - fact.
Great video well done.
I'll take a look at scenery and buildings when vids on the new layout are well underway.
good work mate!!
Well done will! You have sold me with this set - right after Christmas I am running down to my model shop and buying the 'Mixed Frieght' (the current version) set from Hornby! I have never been sure about DCC. But I have decided to dip my toe in!
This is a great video for 8 years old 😁👌
Time flies
Oh wow love it i want this soo much...just to get started with dcc
the chip in my jinty broke but ive fixed it now. 6 years in the running. nice video. can't wait for more
ahhh! A very nice set indeed - good choice! :)
It's a great little workhorse, you're right. Thanks for the comment!
Brilliant set! :D Look great double heading those locos :)
that's excellent! I work these two quite hard too - and the Class 08 is tasked with the job of moving the Dapol track cleaner around the track.
thanks on this review I may get this set for my Bday
i wish you the best in building your layout!
A good idea for a video! I'll plan an entire DCC series.
Love your videos. I'm thinking of getting into this as a hobby, but it seems like one that can easily get out of control! :D
very good point!
I had this as my first DCC set. I use the steam train as my test train as i am laying track, its been a real workhorse for me.
awesome mate :)
cheers buddy!
More on that to come. I get asked it a LOT. All I can say is keep watching if that is what you'r interested in.
I love classic coaches! )))
thanks David! :)
thanks!!!
awesone wish i had it
this was my first ever train set, i got for it my Christmas when I was seven, I really wish I got it when I was at least a bit older because I wrecked the hell out off it
thank you for the feedback!
I have a premium 08, it's amazing, nice vid
thanks for the comment!
thanks Jaike!
thanks for the comment! :)
I think the wind blew a blind which knocked a wagon off the window sill - it looked so cool tho, I thought I'd leave it for a bit lol
well yeah, I hoped it would be a useful video for people you see. It really is a great way to get into DCC - on a budget too.
DCC fitted means they have put a DCC chip in at the factory, DCC ready means there is a socket in the loco, ready and waiting for a chip of your choice.
Yes and yes.
I remember this until now
thank you for the comment!
I shall look into it but you're right, it won't be for a while as I have so much to do!
I love this locomotive's engine sound... 8)
you are the best
That set might be reviewed soon!
I have already done several on the Class 153.
I saw a diesel like that in this second hand train set from the 80s made by hornby and it was this coal dumper kinda thing
That Hornby Railroad design of Class 08 must be over 30 years old... I had one, it was the same, even as a kid I was a bit peeved by the open wheel frames not looking right compared with the real thing.
N gauge version is on my future shopping list.
Yes,it is "The Majestic" I believe it contains a class 47 (I think its a Rail Road version im not sure) and a BR Pepper Corn.
yes! I think the set is called 'The Majestic'
I already have a system that works very well for me. I write them down in a book and as I learn them... I need the book less and less.
I have a diesel ending in 24 and a steam loco ending in 24 - what would you do then?
yup!
haha! You're quite right! I needed to go up to 11! lol I shall annotate the vid accordingly. (The locos are now renumbered back in accordance with my system anyway - under 20 being steam, under 40 being diesel and under 60 being electric)
Great review will. Im jealous that you live in england im american and shipping is pretty high to get a parcel here from the uk. Sweet set too. Great DCC simplification
20:11 "He says" Thats what my Technology teacher at school says :D Great video :)
i liked youer tarin and nice video
i think it fell off the window sill above - but it looked so cool I left it for a bit haha!
I love jinty he's my favorite steam engine
I wish I had the money you had to get one of these awesome sets
Thanks +InterCity82 I now undersatnd what DCC is
It's sunny for you but for us its cloudy
Looks great! I'm very tempted by the newer version of the set as a cost effective way of upgrading to DCC. I prefer the newer one as I prefer the Ex-LNER J83 to the Ex-LMS Jinty. It being a cheapo engine I would have no problems backdating it to the 1930s LNER black. With a small application of modelling technique the 08 could become something half-decent too.
they look so cute
I recently got the dcc ready flying Scotsman, and no matter what number I set it, it just sits there making a grinding noise
Set it to "00". That's the address for running non-DCC trains on DCC equipped layouts. "DCC Ready" means it's not fitted for DCC, but can be adapted easily. "DCC On Board" means it's fitted for DCC.
Gr8 to see a rreview of something I own & that got me into the hobby, gr8 intro to DDC as well & if you're just starting out the ability to run 2 locos keeps things interesting. I had the same prob with the 08, she's a bit tempermental (or she was, need to fit a new chip). I think she's a bit more powerful, despite the same motor, Jinty, who I've a soft spot for (still run her even tho my class 37 & 40 'own' the track now), doesnt seem to be able to pull a stopped 08 as well as the 08 can Jinty.
thanks! how come you got out can I ask?
yes! All DCC works with all DCC
thanks I will do!
It was bought off a friend of a friend. Details for it on the IC82 website.
haha thanks!
"Doesn't look like a class 40 or I doesn't look like an apple!"
just realised wheres the blue tack. and if i have an oval like mine and keep all of my loco's in there small sidings with the points switch on the oval, so no power is going in to the sidings will it change there number or keep it the same. do i have to take all of them off the track?
I promise I will - yes!
this was the first video i saw by you
if two loco's have the same number but there are point's separating the two for example one of them is in a siding would both of them still run ? ( i dont think it will i was just wondering )
Could you do a video about points that you should use with DCC. Electrofrog or insulfrog?
Thanks
GYRUSSE
Looks like a nice set, but I never liked how the old Hornby and Triang 08's had the siderods directly on the wheels rather than on the outside of the brakes
I use the locomotives number. So if i forget a number i just look on the cab side.
always the last digits as the first are often info like company and class, For example the LBSCR added 6 to the front of the number when a locomotive got old so they would have lower numbers on new locomtives. And later the SR used prefixs (2 for brighton). Then BR did the same (3 for south)!
Leaving a loco built as 55 with 32655. and it's classmate 32672!
Only the last two digits are unique!
ok thanks. ill try and get some DCC controllers then, but i do like the DC controllers
Best to contact Hornby or a shop such as Trident Trains/ Hattons.
What control do you use on your layout generally? I currently have the Bachman Dynamis & Hornby Select but I am thinking of getting the Hornby Elite as the Dynamis doesn't cope well with my accessory decoders & reverse loop modules both by Hornby.
iv got this set, love it, Will does hornby do a dcc sound 3f jinty???
Ryan Andersen yah
for a model that originates from the late 50s, the Hornby jinty is still pretty good (granted its got a different body since its inception)
In general: Yes
Specific: It is a matter of the decoder and its settings (CV 29 to be precise). Modern decoders have no problems with DC operation and CV 29 is already set to allow DC operation. Just try, DC is almost like DCC without the signals.
i wich hornby would make a basic version of there top quality 08, rather than getting out that has the body of a deisel but the wheels of the jinty. aspecialy being a DCC set. brilliant vid, keep them coming. : )
I got this set, both locos broke very quickly! The class 08's gearing was worn out completely, The Jinty's wheels got so dirty it wouldn't come off without a lot of cleaning and still they just kept getting dirty again
***** Modelers clean their track and wheels almost everyday. Kids playing with toys don't. It is what separates men from boys.
great train set where did u get it? awesome
the video was annotated just hours after it went live. The fact that that's this video's only flaw - I think is pretty cool haha
