  • The Hornby J94 featured in this video is special for several reasons! Firstly, it's been sent in by the very kind Jon Sharman, secondly it's called 'Whiston' and is now based at the Foxfield Railway. Finally, it's a cracking little model and I have to get one!
Thank you to Jon Sharman for kindly sending her in for a review!

    Hi Will,
A bit late to the party arent I?
I recently purchased this locomotive from my local shop and it is a BEAUTY. It’s absolutely stunning and gorgeous, and considering it’s a 2001 DC Locomotive, I was blown away by its crawl speed.
I also believe it or not work on the Foxfield Line (I should really get some wagons to represent that) and every now and then help Steve Turner (the owner of Whiston and the Chairman of Foxfield) with his stunningly gorgeous locomotive as she is currently under her 10 year boiler renewal.
It’s such a pleasure to work with her and Steve and I really do hope one day I get to crew her, whether that be driving or firing her.

Excellent video of the 'Austerity' Will. There are tons of different liveries available, but i personally recommend either 'Harry' in NCB Red or 'Peter' and 'Joseph' in NCB Light Green. All the best. Cameron

Number of things to correct you here mate.
Firstly the Black 5's have a power rating of 5, hence being called a black 5. The design of the locomotives was firstly done by the War Department and built by various builders such as Hunslet, Bagnall, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn etc, the design after WWII was then adopted and altered by the LNER/BR who added in various handrails, footsteps to increase accessibility and make the locos more user friendly. They also added on some locos, not all, an extended bunker to increase the range. From these alterations of the original WD Austerity 0-6-0ST, you have the LNER/BR J94. With the number of locos preserved, the amount is around 70 have been preserved making them the most preserved class of locomotive in Britain. A lot of Austerities worked well on through the 60's and well into the 70's before being withdrawn, unlike the J94's which would've been withdrawn between 1960 and 1967.

Hi Will, I would strongly recommend the NCB Kent dark blue livery for the j94 because its a very smart livery.
P.S 70 j94 austerity locomotives were preserved. Also Will if your ever in the English and Scottish borders on the east coast I would recommend the Heatherslaw light railway, it runs between Heatherslaw mill and Etal village. Its about five miles from Berwick upon Tweed , I volunteer there every Sunday, I also volunteer there on Sundays and Wednesdays in school holidays.

  • @BR75069
    @BR75069 Před 9 lety +1

Will, this loco is not a J94, it is a Hunslet Austerity. The two are similar, but the easiest way to tell them apart is that the J94 has sqaure windows (on the back) and a taller coal bunker and the Austerity has circular windows. Just thought I'd point that out. The LNER did not create this Austerity loco, they simply adopted it because of it's huge success. In fact, these Austerities we're so good some kept on running in places like power stations and coal mines way into the late 70s and even the very early 80s!

Hunslet , also Hudswell Clarke in Leeds where I live! 😊
Love my Austerity 0-6-0ST in NCB Kent blue livery, check out the review. They are more powerful than I thought, can manage around 5 to maybe 6 coaches fine, but perfectly suit light passenger & goods trains 😊
The LNER bought 75 of them back in about the 40s think it was, also for the War Department as well, that's when they were then classified as LNER class J94, some had a few slight modifications. They be quite a history behind them these little locos, think a few went to work abroad as well . Great review 😊

InterCity82 Hi Will, just done a bit of "Googling". It appears Hornby bought quite a lot of tooling from Dapol back in 1996, probably rolling stock plus locos and some older Airfix moulds aswell. Seems surprising they let this one go, but Hornby make it now.

Speaking of cab detail, when's Henry's turn for a review? When you look at his cab, *then* you will understand what "No cab detail" really means and owe several models you've reviewed an apology
I say go with the NCB livery. It's a very handsome livery, and this particular make of the J94 is available in it. And if you get this particular J94 for yourself, then you can compare what is stock and what is custom.

Will, your number on survivors of the class is a bit wrong.. out of 485 Austerities built, around about 70 have survived. 3 of which are in my neck of the woods!
They were designed by the Hunslet Engine Company from '43 to '64 and were Austerity engines. They were never given the classification of J94 until the LNER acquired 75 of them. Only the LNER (and later BR operated) ones have this classification.
The LNER J94s were fitted with a tall coal bunker. I'm not sure of other modifications, but that is the main difference that can be seen between the Austerity and J94s.
Don't trust all this as 100% correct. Well, only the last sentences.

  • @kellyashfordtrains2642

Whiston is a nice Saddle Tank Engine. But I can highly recommend a better engine to you than her. I know she's on loan to you, yet the engine I've already got is one you should get for yourself. She's a Great Western Tender Engine of the 4-4-0 kind. You'll find her online in three model shops:
