Jeff Passan Says the Mariners Are in "GO MODE" For the 2024 Trade Deadline

- In his early trade deadline preview on ESPN.com, Jeff Passan wrote that the Mariners are set to be very aggressive at the trade deadline this summer, mentioning the likes of Luis Robert Jr., Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonso, and Bo Bichette as some potential targets. Additionally, team CEO John Stanton sat down with The Seattle Times to discuss the deadline, claiming the front office has the resources to add what it needs. Do Ty and Colby buy that? Nailed it! Stanton didn't say anything we want to hear. He said "“We’ve got the resources to be able to do the things we need to do to put a good team on the field,” The team they have now is "good". He didn't say squat about adding anything. They're going to have to subtract from what they have (payroll or prospects) in order to do anything. The article doesn't say a thing about Jerry and Justin having the ability to add a dime in payroll.

My main problem with this prospect discussion is what 5 win player are you getting 2 years of at this deadline? Who is this 3 years of control 130 wRC+ 4 WAR player that is must trade for that we should send Colt Emerson and Laz Montes for? 60 games of Robert per year for the next 3 years? Kyle Tucker is the only guy that I would actually be fine with trading multiple top 5 prospects for, but why would Houston send us a guy that would massively increase our World Series odds?

On the prospect decision: It is entirely NOT as cut and dry as Colby wants it to be. The big name bats that are listed everywhere are: 1.5 years of Bo Bichette having a terrible year currently, 1.5 years of Vladdy Jr, 3 months of Pete Alonso having a bad year, Robert who the health risks speak for themselves. Of that group, I am interested in Vladdy but there are truly no slam dunks here. In our farm system, it is my opinion and the opinion of a lot of our fans that we have 4-6 slam dunks that, if we can wait for them, we will get 6 years of above average and maybe even special play out of.
What I'm hoping is that like with Castillo, there is a trade out there for a star player that we may not be aware of. If we can get a player who is solidly above average on a contract that will keep him here at least through 2025, I would be willing to part ways with a couple of the prospects. But I reject the idea that it is this year or nothing.
Obviously the Mariners need to add and I expect they will, but the biggest acquisition they can make is within and that's for Julio's SLG Pct to go from .339 to around his career avg of near .500 before this year. He's just laughing in the background. Even JP has rediscovered his power from last year as since being back he has a higher SLG Pct.than he did in '23.
I’m definitely for trading prospects. If they could get an impact bat, along with a high leverage bullpen arm I’d be satisfied. Bichette and Sewald would be my dream.

As much as I despise Stanton, I will at least say that I am very thankful he doesn’t meddle in the baseball decisions in the way a arte Moreno or a reinsdorf do
If the bats we have now hit their career averages, we wouldn't have to trade the future for temporary maybes... we need high leverage arms in the pin. The bats we have now need to do there jobs!!

You need to trade your prospects now if you can add real talent to make a run NOW. All of those prospects are just that....prospects. Most won't ever reach their potential. Most prospects don't. If you trade 2 of our top 4 prospects and one turns into an all star ....that is well worth it. Remember this.......this rotation as is......won't be together in 2 or 3 years. We have to go for it NOW.

hopefully Stanton never talks again so we can quit beating the dead horse -- yes, he's cheap. No, he doesn't care what fans think. No, he's not selling the team unless he can make a huge payday doing it. Yes, if he sells the team the person buying it will probably operate in the same way because they're billionaires and they all want to make ever accelerating profits off their investments.

I don't feel like this a WS winning team even if you get a good bat. I hope I'm wrong, but this year's team does not make me feel good about giving up high end prospects. The vibes I get are "meh". I am generally optimistic, but not this year.
