@@johncabrera9745the solution to that problem lies in the possession of the property. If they can't identify the contents of a lost briefcase with that much money then it is't theirs. If the cops possess it then yes it's as good as gone, just like anything else they confiscate rightly or wrongly, sadly. 😢

Most local laws insist you bring the money to local enforcement so they can keep it. When I was a kid another neighborhood kid found a bike and brought it to the police station. They told him if the bike wasnt claimed in 90 days he could claim it. He came back in 90 days and no one had claimed it. But, mysteriously, it wasn't there!

There was a case where the lady was a waitress and someone left her ten thousand dollars anonymously in a to go box at her table. She was struggling financially.
But to do the right thing she called the police and turned it in. The police tried to keep it. Wouldn’t give it back. Then claimed there was an odor of marijuana from it.
Then they tried to negotiate and keep 90 percent but give her 10.
She finally got the money. Unacceptable.

Yup! Deposit a few hundred (no more than a little under $1,000.. remember to have an odd number. Instead of depositing $1,000, deposit $983, and mix it up every other week). Also open multiple accounts to deposit the money in randomly.

They also called themselves "The Wolverines" and routinely planted evidence for decades. Most of "The Wolverines" are still on the force currently only the ones directly related to the lawsuit got fired despite others admitting to knowing about it for decades and doing nothing.

In the event of a briefcase owner who was meticulous enough to keep a manifest with the serial numbers of each bill, as many banks do, I would imagine that reporting any portion of it would expose the full amount. Assuming, of course, that the police department would think to do anything with the security features on the bills given to them. Assuming, of course, that the police would even search for the original owners themselves. Most banks have briefcases filled with money ready to go for hostage rescue negotiations. Each bill in their suitcases are meticulously catalogued so that when they re-enter circulation they are, hopefully, recognized by their serial numbers. This is part of the reason that, even though authorities never found the infamous D. B. Cooper, people are able to make educated guesses as to what direction he might have gone after jumping out of a plane with a bomb and a suitcase full of money never to be seen again.
Don't put any in your bank account, don't use any of it in any situation where you have to show your ID or share your name, and don't "build a circle" around your house by spending it exclusively in places close to home. Report it all or report none.
The last thing anybody with a brain is going to do if they find 10 grand in the middle of nowhere is tell somebody about it.

When my parents moved into their new house, they found $20k of cash, gold, jewelry, and diamonds in a safe in the attic. It was all probably worth $50k in total. But they bought the house as is and had the legal right to claim this safe as part of the house.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) they returned the safe and all its contents to the previous owner's family, who were unaware that their late grandmother (who was the owner of the house) hid that safe away in the attic.
