- Today we look at the Aldi "Estate City" ebike range, and how they're holding up after a week of use.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this bike! Let me know in the comments and any questions you need answered, ask away!

2024 Update - This bike was absolutely fine for the price back when I reviewed it, but I wouldn't recommend it now. They did an updated version with disc brakes, but I'd still stay well clear of it unless you can get it for an absolute bargain basement price. The tech is clunky and the mechanical quality of the bike is very sub-par to a lot of other options out there at the moment. Safe riding!
I had problems with the crank and under warranty got it fixed. The bike mechanic said they didn’t put any lune, etc so the bearings all rusted the moment I rode on a wetter day. After that was fixed the bike still works like new. I also replaced the rear derailer with a better quality one. For $650 when I got it, I’m happy with it.
@@cityplanner3063 Glad you got it sorted, hopefully you get many carefree miles out of it now.
Picked up the blue unisex bike for 594 at my local Aldi on clearance just put it together I will take it for a spin tomorrow. I bought thanks to your informative review.
Thanks so much Paul, I hope it does what you need it to!
Hmm that's an odd price. Did they actually pick that price for clearance or did they somehow give you a better price and drop it down a little for you?
Reduced on clearance last one.
Bullshit! lol
Thanks for the video. Would love to see what you did with the front fork.
I'll be shooting a video shortly! Cheers
i have both originals wife an I love it, had them a year going great, they work like everything check them service them. brake failure well no . just got check settings we are 70 years an in hilly country
Great to see good old fashioned v-brakes away more reliable than cheap disc brakes. If you want ultra strong stopping power look up hydraulic disc brakes
I bought the e mtb really good for 1200 euros.
A video of your upgrades would be great.
Thanks for watching Vi! I do have a video out on replacing the front fork to an upgraded one, replacing the stem and replacing the pedals. Have a watch of those and let me know if you have any other questions. Happy riding!
Bit late to the party but would love some info on adjusting the speed limiter!
I wish I could be helpful, but I had a good look at trying to derestrict it and couldn't find any info on this particular unit. Would love someone else to chime in if they know how it's done!
Hi mate do you adjust the torque in the zippo cycling app and do you find it does anything.
So sorry I missed this comment, but I'll reply now in case anyone else has the same question - Yes I adjusted it in the app, and nope, not a thing from what I coould tell!
Did you add a disc break to the front wheel of the male version?
Yes I did. Instead of a suspension fork, I found a hybrid bike with a solid fork and disc brake already in place. The swapover is exactly the same as I showed in my latest video about swapping front forks. Check it out and feel free to ask any questions!
got the original 2 bikes going great no problems about to change the seats to a broader softer type.otherwise great stuff
front forks a bit ordinary but ok
Good stuff mate!
I don't suppose you've attempted derestricting these bikes and if so how you went about it? Picked one up a while ago and found the speed ok, but I just find myself wanting an extra 5-10km/h.
I 100% agree. I haven't looked in to it, but I bet it's possible. Give me a hot minute and I'll get back to you!
@@9LivesRides hey did you have any luck?
@@YaBoiBigNutz I haven't found any info online, when I get the chance I'll tear the bike down so I can see what controller it's running. Hopefully I can have an answer for you by the weekend!
@@9LivesRides awesome, thanks heaps for the quick response and for helping me out. Massive Legend/10
@@9LivesRides Hey!! Did you ever look into the controller on the e-bike? I'm sure it should use some generic controller, should be very possible to increase the top speed on the bike.
what is thevload limit?
Zippo app is not opening any advice on how to open this app or maybe there're other apps we can use
To be honest I don't have much insight on the app, I'm guessing you have the latest version that was released yesterday?
Why is my Aldi electric bike electrics not working. What is the flashing Bluetooth light means
The Bluetooth is purely for connecting the bike to the app. It shouldn't affect the way the bike works. What's happening with your bike?
Cheers
You're welcome!
Is there a throttle on the mens version?
No, these bikes are pedal assist only regardless of version. Definitely better bikes out there!
On 27.04.2023 the price is aud999 in aldi is worth it today?
Sorry about the late reply, completely overlooked your comment! For anyone watching in 2024, there are much better bikes out there for this price range, even if it is the version with the disc brakes!
I am 155 tall approximately would this bike suit me
I think you'd be just fine, but I'd personally spend my money elsewhere these days. The 2023 upgrade isn't much better.
They're like 473.79 AUD here in the Philippines since they're surplus imports. Should I give these a chance? Are these "bicycle shaped objects" that will kill me?
Also, anyone know if I should get the Unisex version since I'm 160cm? I assume the Men's version is taller + taller average height for you westerners.
Wow, that's crazy cheap! There's definitely a lot better out there these days, honestly this version was a bit crap. But at that price if you need a basic bike that'll get you from A to B you'll probably be okay. Just make sure it's put together properly!
8.5k php now in Australian Surplus
@@ferez1985 Lol, that's where I found them too in Carousell. I didn't get it anyway, they still seem unsafe to me.
How much for new forks on bike
Anywhere from free if you take them from an old donor bike, to several hundred dollars if you buy new and get a shop to fit them. Personally I wouldn't spend any money on this bike!
Gday, 1year on, how is it going? Assuming it's still going? 😂
Still going! No issues, but I certainly wouldn't recommend one in late 2023!
Can you pls suggest for me the best cheapest e-bikes to get in Australia, for heavier people
Sorry mate but to be honest I wouldn't have a clue. I really don't know much about what ebikes are out there. Let us know what you end up getting!
Try the DKU folding bike 150kg load
Maybe buy it for the motor wheel.
But it's annoying Australia is such a nanny with only 250 watts and pedal assistance.
Completely agree, so underpowered. Aldi just came out with an updated version. Pretty much the same with crap disc brakes. Wouldn't recommend!
@9 Lives Rides My scooter is rated 800 watt and plenty of torque.
And my skateboard 3000 watt but less torque and still flys up hills
@@9LivesRides we grabbed one for the wife and a friend . i have put some 29er tyres on it and moved the mudgaurds to fit, looks much cooler. the seat mount bracket destroyed itself, the pedals arew junk. i replaced pedals and seat bracket from some units i had laying around. took some chinese alloy cranks with narrow wide cog. we have some cable operated hydraulic calipers on order, zoom hb100 from aliexpress. so with some tinkering and 100 bucks its actually pretty good.
Can someone please tell me why disc brakes are crap? Thx
except for NSW where it is 500w which was amended by a party to win a state election
I bought two bikes from Aldi, one for me and one for my husband. We absolutely loved them and rode every weekend. Sadly this weekend, while riding down a very steep hill, my brakes failed and I had a big crash braking two fingers and needing stitches in my knee and covered in bruises . My husband was following and one of his brakes failed, so he could stop but that was also dangerous. I am hoping we can get a refund as I will not trust these bikes again.
Sorry to hear that, and that you had such a bad experience! I think that the real downside of these types of bikes is that even though they come partially assembled, they should really be assembled by a bike mechanic or someone with sound bicycle knowledge as setting up brakes properly can be a tricky thing to get right. I'm not assuming that your bikes weren't setup properly by yourselves, but definitely something to be aware of if you're in the market for an unassembled "big box" bike.
Aldi don't have enough stock. Always sold out.
They're only a special item available maybe once or twice a year. Good luck with the hunt!
@@9LivesRides didn’t seem popular where I live. After 7-8 months they have finally reduced the final bike and got it for $650 so not complaining even if it isn’t the best.
@@cityplanner3063You're probably not alone there mate! Absolutely budget bike but not a bad buy for $650.
