My 1st gen Apple TV 4K is still running like a champ
Mine too.
My 2015 is STILL rockinâ. Both the WiFi and remote stopped working for a period of time but both fixed themselves đ€·đ»ââïž it wonât quit!

Me too, with my iphone6, but NOT my iphone13!! Any thoughts, suggestions?? Help!
@@fldon2306Make sure youâve updated to the latest software.
Would have loved to see Apple implement âFind Myâ Remote feature and MagSafe wireless type charging like how the Apple watches charge. This rendition would have saved also anyone from getting the USB-C charge port dirty.
Hey, USB-C ports work just fine. Trust me, us non-Apple people have been using USB-C for over 6 years and it is amazing.
Yeah, those features would be great to have now, but what would we be buying next year then?
@@fuuz642 I don't even know what you mean for sure, but it is still funny.
@@skankytrick thanks mate. Merry Christmas

What I find is the most important thing about using Ethernet connections is the security it provides. Hackers canât see it and get into your network when you use a physical connection. I wired my whole home a few years ago. Love it.
Have you had any issues with the apple TV not waking up after going to sleep? I occasionally have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in to get it back up and running again. This is the 2nd 3rd gen unit I had do this after replacing the first one. Curious if you're experiencing the same thing
great show How does this 4k box compare to the apple app on the Amazon 4k fire stick
Good lord, why is your HDTV mounted so high up on the wall of your room?
Is there a way to use the Ethernet as an input for SSD drives for media playing?
I just like picked up the 2021 ATV 4K for $70 on Amazon. I donât game and couldnât careless about USB C remote. đđđ
The one issue I have with the ATV is that many developers are not in a rush to implement the best features for ATV. It took CZcams forever to implement match dynamic range on ATV. Fox Sports app offers 4K HDR for all platforms except ATV (4K SDR only). Amazon implemented Dolby Vision for âRings of Powerâ on all streaming platforms except ATV (HDR 10 only). For this reason I keep my Android TV apps active and have a Firestick 4K Max as well.
This isnât an issue with developers. It comes down to the fact that the entire industry uses one codec and Apple chooses to use a different one.
I have Xfinity internet what should I use?
Where did you get that cool shelf?
Great to see you back!
I think the best point you brought up is to emphasize that thread support is *already* a useful feature. People don't need to wait for version 1.0 of Matter(âą) products to roll out, thread is useful right now.
And it's nice to see you'll be back to posting some more videos! đ
Thanks Garance! It's great to see you back in the comments too. Yes Thread is here today and it's great to use with HomeKit.
Just got this, I didnât realize it was so new. I use it to work out to on Fitness+. It also improved the speed of my streaming, I currently have a SmartTV, but itâs slower. I like the voice command feature. I agree, I wish it had access to my keychain.
I have lg oled c9 and this is my first ATV and boy its good i did comparison with tv native apps and they look sharper more colourful more contrast in general visibly look better and i am happy with this purchase
Glad to have you back Eric đ. We appreciate you and your well curated content!đ
Can you add smarter pro on apple app??
I have an issue with the new ATV4K and itâs that some series/movies show VERY dark and they are unwatchable.
Cannot get Apple Remote to even turn tv on. I did charge the remote.
To be honest I'm not an Apple power user so i do even know what many of the features you mentioned i.e. thread and matter? I don't have any intention of adding any of the security features and home stuff as I live in a condo. But I will say the one thing I'd miss the most is the USB port, I use this for an external DAC for my 2 channel audio system. HDMI-ARC for the TV. it was a nice feature in the 4KTV.
what would have suprised me would have been audio passthru with the option to switch between bitstream and LPCM..
Noone reviewing these devices seems to even mention the audio aspects of these boxes although alot of people Do use them with a full home theater.
Awesome to see you back Eric! Looking forward to more content, missed your videos đđŒđđŒ
Thanks Deon! I'm glad to hear it.
Hi Eric, is the model on your shelf taken from âKiwiâ the short movie where he dives off the cliff to simulate flying?? Brings a tear to my eye every time!!

Thanks for the review. Just purchased and replaced our old 1080p Apple TV. đź We Likey
Loving the content I'm planning to get the newer Apple TV since seeing all the latest features like FaceTime screen function with TVOS is defo a big seller for me that and the threaded compatibility is just a shame you can't /don't get trade in value from your Apple TV previously not like you with other Apple products
I think im the only one who liked the original Apple TV remote more than the newer designs!
I have the 4k model from 2017. Just bought an LG C2 OLED with 2.1 HDMI ports. Would it make an appreciable difference to get new HDMI 2.1 cables with the older model or just uprgrade to the new 2022 model? Does the new model come with an HDMI 2.1 cable or is that something I must purchase?
I would, when Apple released the 2017 version they were recommending the Belkin ultra high speed HDMI cable. I use the 2.1 cables on all my devices.
I just recently upgraded to from the the 2017 model to the 2022 model. Itâs pretty much the same experience. I did notice on CZcams when watching video games in 4K 60fps that the 2017 would output in 1440p 60fps. The 2022 model outputs the same video in 4K 60fps.
The thing does not come with a cable to charge the remote so I will let you guess........ LOL I am an apple user and have not ever used usb c to charge anything on device side. No cable is going to make a lot of people tilted. Its worse tthan what they did with the phones because old brick and cable would charge.
My 1st gen ATV 4k runs good except the annoying ethernet port, which randomly negotiates at 100mbps instead of the full gigabit
Can anyone tell me whatâs the purpose of an Apple TV box?
Can you watch the extras on the movies you buy on Apple TV?
Yes! I have it and I have done that
My kids regularly max out my 1st Apple TV 4K, which I have on my living room TV, so I upgraded to the new Apple TV 4K. I also have an old Apple TV 1080p, which I still use in my bedroom, but I think Iâm gonna use it in a Honda Odyssey that I plan on purchasing within a month or two. đ
Thank you, very informative.

With the FireStick, I can add apps like crackle, freevee, Tubi, etc. Does the Apple TV support these and other apps like these? Thanks
Yes, all services you mentioned have app for the Apple TV.
Yes Dan. The Apple TV box is a set top box with those same apps as well as tighter integrations into Apple's ecosystem with things like quick HomeKit access, better Fitness+ connections, iCloud Photo Library and AirPlay and remote control from your Apple devices.

I hope you are right about the full sized HomePod. My long term plans are to have HomePods as my home theatre and want something that would do justice to Dolby Atmos.
Yeah we'll see. Bloomberg has also reported on rumors of an Apple Soundbar which could be a great option there with additional HomePod speakers too.
I have a pair of OG HomePods as a stereo pairing for one of my Apple TVâs and itâs rather awesome. They donât take up as much room as a sound bar either.
Just picked up the new 3rd gen with Ethernet. Man I love this thing.
I'm going to have Apple TV 4K soon and I want to know if it's possible to copy all the apps I have on my Ipad pro 11 to the Apple TV .....thanks
I don't think that's currently possible. Here's what Apple says to developers:
"Although iOS and tvOS apps are distinct entities (meaning there isnât a single binary that runs on both platforms), you can create a universal purchase that bundles these apps. The user purchases an app once, and gets the iOS version for their iOS devices and a tvOS version for Apple TV."
So, a developer would have to create an iOS version and a separate tvOS version, both of which you'd get if you bought the app, and you'd load the appropriate version onto the device you're using.
@@JohnMSawyer Thanks
Welcome back! Another great video! Glad to see your video. Pleasant surprise
Thank you!
I went back to watch your video on using HomePods as TV speakers and it is good but definitely outdated now. You could try revisiting the topic now that last yearâs Apple TV introduced that eARC audio routing feature. I have been using my HomePods permanently for all my TV audio, including consoles and PC and I am shocked at how well it works now.
Does screen mirroring work for you? Because I canât get I working when the HomePods are selected as default output, indicating that mirroring doesnât work over multiple AirPlay hops
Where can I find instructions on turning off my LG Smart TV in order to hookup the Apple TV box? Thanks
I don't know specifically about your TV, but...If you want to use your Apple TV as the smart part of your TV, I find the easiest way if to make your TV forget your Wi-Fi network and or unplug Ethernet to it. Then use your Apple TV remote to turn it on and if your TV supports HDMI CEC then it will turn on with the Apple TV and you can start streaming.

Does one really need an Apple TV if they have a smart TV? My Sony smart TV has the Apple TV app.

Man I hope apple brings back the OG Homepod! Mines just unexpectedly died yesterday, so sad! I loved it.
Great to see you back, I hope you are doing well. đ
Unfortunately, ATV will not be recognized by a 2022 LG C2 OLED tv. It's unusable! I didn't believe it. If you know a way of using it, please let me know how.
Iâm on my second apple 4K tv, I had to buy another one because my first 2018 one was glitching and I bought the 2021 apple 4K and works great. I guess I will have no choice to buy the new one if my present Apple TV starts acting up but so far so good itâs working superb.
Spot on!!! Big 2 gen Big HomePod was just release
Yeah! Welcome back to the channel!
Thanks Eric!
I suspect with the added power we will see Secure HomeKit video bump in resolution and processing capabilities. Also future versions of Matter will have a lot more data processing to do. I also suspect that Apple purposely made the design choice of these similar to Main and extender like form factors of wireless network devices. The cheaper model has high fidelity auto output thanks to HDMI. (Kind of like a AirPort Express on steroids for audio)
I do wonder if Apple wants to run HomeKit through this Ethernet port with a secure connection to the router. Ie using this port as the WAN firewall from your HomeKit to the internet.
This device appears to have dropped prior to new software to take advantage of Appleâs plans IMO.
I have always said, the Apple TV is the best streaming box on the market period. Even if you do not plan to use Apple services.
I agree it's the best streaming box. We'll see on the smart home plans. I think it's hard to read too much into all those details from what I see so far but you have some interesting ideas.
Welcome back!
I have a Silver Apple TV 1 and OSMC works great with it. I'm disappointed that Apple has discontinued the USB port for extra storage because it really comes in handy!
I wonder why they do not support directly connected external storage anymore. Would be very nice to browse through and play from an external USB drive. Ah, maybe they want you to buy movies from iTunes and pay for streaming services through the App Store.?
I donât know if Iâm buying the Apple TV 4K but Iâm definitely buying your skincare regimen!
Welcome back! I picked up one of these 2022 Apple TVâs specifically because of HDR10+, which is the only advanced HDR supported by Samsung TVâs. Samsung was one of the creators of HDR10+ and really doesnât want to pay royalties for Dolby Vision, so if you want something beyond HDR10, this is the way to go. Panasonic is the only other company to support HDR10+, but Panasonic hasnât sold TVâs in the US in a long time. I think Apple TV+ supports HDR10+ on some shows as does Amazon Prime Video, but very few others do, unfortunately. Perhaps it will see wider use eventually.
Apple updated last year's Apple TV with HDR 10+ with TVos 16
@@PCWorld22 No, they had made an announcement they were going to introduce HDR10+, but then the announcement vanished and people thought Apple wasnât going to do it. It didnât come in until the new Apple TV 2022.
Welcome back
As far as I am concerned, the Apple TV - for my use case - cannot surprise me anymore. I use it for video streaming services, such as Apple Music, iTunes, and a couple other services. And for that, the Apple TV essentially didnât really change in the last 7 years. Sure, there were some under the hood changes and comfort changes, but thatâs about it. Is that a bad thing? Well, no! I got a new Apple TV recently. That being said, I know itâs not the best time to do it, as currently, no Apple device supports AV1 decoding and that codec is considered the future for streaming services.
It's good to see you again, Eric. Thanks for coming back, bub. Glad you're doing okay.
I have the 2nd generation (A2169) 4K AppleTV with video set to 4K HDR (59.94 Hz). When I watch CZcams videos I miss the first 3-5 seconds of the video, because Iâm seeing a black screen. Any ideas on fixing that?
That sounds like match content coming into play. Check your Apple TV settings. You could try turning match content off but it means your TV won't adjust to the frames per second of the video you are watching. (30 fps in my case and 24 fps for "cinematic" channels đ). If I were you I would just live with loosing the first few seconds and enjoy the proper frame rate but it's a trade off either way.
@@EricWelander, Iâve been contending with it, by pausing and backing the video up to the start, but what a PITA. Iâve also noticed that HBO & CZcams TV are often worse when attempting to get an episode to start. I often have to quit all running apps, and then launch HBO or CZcams TV.
This helped on my 1st generation 4K Apple TV (A1842): On the Video and Audio settings, Match Content is set to Range & Frame Rate. Select Format and then scroll down to Other Formats and select 4K SDR (60 Hz). That reduced the number of times when the CZcams app blanked out the screen to deal with a frame rate change.
@@EricWelander, I also just realized that in many videos that I watch on HBO, CZcamsTV and a few others, that the audio is slightly off. If I'm watching someone's lips, they're not in sync with what they're saying. Have you seen or experienced this?
I bought this new Apple TV but not sure yet what the advantage is. Tv came with an Apple TV app. Sometimes we are using the app sometimes the apple device which has a less useful remote. Feels like I donât need the Apple TV
Whats the point in these high storage? Even even you had most of the Apps, you would still have plenty of room even with the lower tear model. Hey you were right about the new Home POD.
Nice to see you back Eric! Look forward to following your rich content đ
Thanks!

Thank you Fabiano!
It is good to see youâre back dude
I have both version and I can tell you you donât need to upgrade. I wanted another one so I can use it on another tv
I'm in the market for a new TV. Should I look at getting a basic TV and adding the Apple TV, or would it be better to purchase a new TV that has the Apple TV App built-in? I haven't seen a list of pros / cons on getting the Apple TV App built-in compared to just the Apple TV stand-alone device.
Most TVs have an Apple TV+ app, itâs different from the Apple TV which is a media player so you can download different apps etc connect to your phone etc. and the TV+ app is a streaming service app. If you have a HomeKit set up or like to keep everything in one place the Apple TV is worth it. I recently purchased it and like it a lot
I agree with Miss J and it's a detail I could have addressed more in the video. The Apple TV box is essentially like if Apple made the entire smart TV software, but without actually making a TV and instead as an external box. You can install apps for all (or almost all) your streaming services along with games and easy access to other Apple things you don't get in the Apple TV+ app like Apple's HomeKit, Fitness+, and iCloud Photo Library
Why is your t.v. Mounted so high?
Since this video I fixed this problem. We initially kept it high up to be out of reach of kids, and we were re-using a mount from a smaller TV we used to have on the same wall.
2:08 now if they would only follow the same logic when it comes to the magic mouse. It's crazy it still ships with a lightning port. Edit: And the damned Magic Trackpad. Both mouse and trackpad still have lightning ports.
The Circle 2 is faster to load for me with the new AppleTV, nearly instant. I can absolutely tell the difference between this and the last gen there fwiw
That's good to hear Paul! I'm glad you are seeing that difference.
Only disappointing thing is bluetooth is not updated to 5.3!
Why is the TV pretty much on the ceiling?
The extra space is for future apple VR.
never knew there was a fan in my 1st gen 4k..
I use my HomePods (the mini and the gen 1 home) with my Apple TV and it works flawlessly.
Do you have a problem with having to reconnect the HomePod minis when you turn off the ATV?
@@Beansrdone no sir, it auto connects usually when I pick whatever im watching at the moment.
Why is it great that Apple stopped selling the 1080p version and why does it bother you if they keep around old tech and sell it?
They should maybe have ability to download iTunes movies to the apple TV for offline viewing with that much storage
I hope Apple considers a sounder for future hardware with spatial audio and TrueHD support.
Let's worry about streamers like Netflix adding TrueHD first. That's when Apple will add it, probably not before.
@@BookClubDisaster Agreed. I forget in most cases people will use this device with streaming platforms, as I mostly use my own Blu-Ray, 4K dis backups on my Plex server and stream to all of my Apple TV 4K devices. I can only get DDP (Atmos lite) out of those devices. However my trusty Shield TV Pro still remains king in my home cinema room but Apple TV in all other rooms.
@@salarsadri 1I really don't understand Plex. When I want to watch a Blu Ray I use my Blu Ray player. Simple.
@@BookClubDisaster I was in the same boat but have 5 TV's in my house and an Apple TV on each one minus the Cinema room which I have a 4K player, Shield TV Pro and my Disc collection. I love physical discs but appreciate keeping a backup or even a hybrid version of the move I own on my home Synology server. For example: I have the Edge of Tomorrow 4K disc that is mastered in TrueHD and the BluRay with DTS:X. The DTS:X version is arguably better on this particular movie and I was able to backup my 4K movie and Blu-Ray and mix the audio file with the 4K file to create the ultimate experience.
will this work with a trashcan Mac ?
I thought you ended uploading? Has something changed?
I took a break. There were a number of things going on personally and professionally that made it almost impossible to make videos and I didn't know when I would be able to return...months, years, never? But I'm glad to be back now.
Wait..... what just happened? Eric, is that you or is this a deeeeep fake video? đ€Ł Welcome home.
Haha thanks! This video is not AI generated lol
The mandatory thing that I think I need after having an Apple TV is definitely a case, its remote is not good of holding, it hurts my hands
USB-C is absolutely the best (and will eventually be the only charging option) which is a good thing for so many reasons. That being said, since Apple Lighting was announced about 11 years ago, I have used the lighting port in many apple products. Some of the lighting wires did break over time, however, ZERO failures were from the device. I have an iPad Pro 11" that has tremendous issues charging from the USB-C and will one charge from one particular USB-c wire, even brought the upload to Apple to have them fix it (the iPad is like new but out of warranty) apple said they could only replace it, which is crazy as the pad is otherwise working and looking great. We also have an issue with a Nikon digital camera where the USB-c stopped working completely. I still believe in USB-C, but from my perspective it's not as good. One other thing, USB-C has an open slit at the end of the tip where dust and particles can get in and cause issues, where lighting does not have that issue.
That's a beautiful cat.
The remote should not have been IR
i paid the 20 extra for ethernet! (and more storage) (actually i bought a refurbished for the base model price)
