  • Just a quick look at Star Trek Lower Decks Season 4 episode 9, The Inner Fight! So excited we finally got a reveal about the tiny ship.
    Also, sorry about the different background, I was actually on vacation when I shot this video, which is also why it's late.

    When Mariner said Sito's name my jaw dropped. Such a brilliant way of tying the show back to the original Lower Decks concept.
    It's also funny that they brought back Robert Duncan McNeill after he already played Tom Paris on this show, reminds me of Jeffrey Combs playing Brunt and Weyoun in the same episode

      Mariner hugging Ma’ah was a scene that genuinely made me go “awwwwwww” 😢❤️
      That a show that is ostensibly a comedy is capable to making me feel such a strong emotion without the need for any music effects to highlight it…it’s just there and you know how she generally is and what she just admitted…
      Anyone who still thinks Lower Decks isn’t “real” Star Trek at this point simply has no clue what “real” Star Trek even IS…this was a moment of pathos worthy of TNG itself…😍❤️
      And then that cliffhanger…I literally have compared it to “Best of Both Worlds Part 1” and I watched THAT particular two-parter back when it was first-run, when I was a TOS obsessed child of about 7 years old. My now 40 year old jaw dropped at the reveal of Nick Lucarno and him stating the he and Mariner were “going to cause some trouble together…” just as much as it did when I saw a fully assimilated Capt. Jean-Luc Picard state over the Enterprise viewscreen “Resistance is futile, Number 1…” followed by Commander Riker’s command to Lt. Worf “Mr. Worf, FIRE!”
      I hope that by the time I’m in my 60s, people will be looking at “The Inner Fight” as one of the greatest moments of the Star Trek franchise, I genuinely believe that Lower Decks IS right up there with TOS and TNG as one of Star Trek’s greatest shows. It’s had a lot to work against, being an adult animated comedy which, on the surface, seems like it would be at odds with the rest of the franchise as a whole. However, the episodes this series has put out over the course of its four seasons (thus far…definitely wanting McMahon’s classic “7 seasons and a movie” for LD 😅) have shown not just a love for the show’s past but also managed to push the show further than the 90s TNG era ever dared to go and has set the path for the show’s future. Both SNW and Prodigy have borrowed heavily from the LD format of episodic plots with season-long arcs, a formula that LD perfected all the way back in Season Two’s “Pakled Threat” arc…an arc which elevated the Pakled to actual intergalactic threat status while keeping them true to their comedic nature (could really only work in a comedy series, so this was a perfect example of LD playing to its strengths…) and ALSO provided our first bit of follow-up to the Dominion War, as it’s hypothesized that the Pakled were able to build such overwhelmingly powerful clump ships from the debris left over from the war…great way of displaying some of the aftermath of war…😅😁
      It took a different perspective on Star Trek and I feel it set a beautiful way forward for the franchise as a whole…and I am STOKED to see where all this leads up to next week! 😅🥰😁

      Lower Decks is definitely a fun animated romp, but I agree it's so much more than that. I really love when people use the medium of animation to draw you in and then give you in depth, character driven, and emotional storytelling.
      I agree about the hug, I also needed that after all the feels immediately preceding it!

    I had a rather dark thought.
    What if the season finale involves Mariner sacrificing herself to stop Locarno… and it’s her turn to scale the Black Mountain?
    Only, it’s not just the koala that greets her, but the ghost of Sito Java.
    That kind of thing would be a good capstone for her character arc this season.
    …Or maybe it will be something different. Either way, I appreciate the big swing that Mike took with this episode and no doubt the finale.
    I just wish that some folks on the internet understood Mariner’s arc for what it was because (get this) those same folks hated that Sito was namedropped. And that just baffles me :(

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I don't understand hating on that, it totally recontextualizes everything we know about Mariner in a way that actually makes a lot of sense in terms of trauma and survival guilt and struggling to move on, like getting promoted is leaving her behind. It's so good. 😭😭😭😭 It's honestly so well written I think it might have been planned for longer than this season maybe from the very beginning

      @@renrants Agreed. But there is one reviewer who shall remain nameless that just… doesn’t comprehend the PTSD and survivor’s guilt of it all.
      But yeah, it’s clear as day that Sito must have been in Beckett’s backstory from the very start and Mike’s just been playing the long game.
      It’d be nice if that were revealed in a future interview or something.

      @renrants  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Yeah, I wanna see if that's the case, because LD was EXPLICITLY always inspired by that episode of TNG, it really doesn't seem like a stretch that there was a long game plan to incorporate it

      @@AdamEspersona You can name him. It's fine. TrekCulture might be the single largest channel in this space. It was extremely baffling/disappointing, but it isn't like we're dealing with someone from the Legion of Professionally Butthurt Conservative Grifters (TM) here. I've never known Sean to be problematic outside of this, so I suspect his dislike of the reveal & Mariner's backsliding mental state, though beyond our comprehension, is coming from an honest place, and the uncomfortably ableist framing is just the result of a major blind spot.
      But it'll likely come up again, seeing as this is a two-parter. • @josephsheranda
    @josephsheranda Před 7 měsíci +4

    So this is definitely the "can of worms" episode for the series thus far. Jeez, where do I begin...
    Interesting that these lizards basically go Jurassic Park on the energy fence. However the fence design is very similar to the energy fence from TNG "Attached" when Jean Luc and Beverly are trying to escape from Kesprytt.
    Big dynamic here that Captain Freeman included T'Lyn in the meeting to discuss Mariner's well being. It shows she's paying attention to whom is close to her daughter.
    No explanation given why Thomas Riker needs to be escorted back to earth. Is he no longer in prison? Or perhaps will we see him in the finale? Hmm.
    With the retconned timeline from Picard, Beverly Crusher would be heavily pregnant at this point. That would make Mariner 30-something.
    Another Star Wars homage: I just noticed the window designs in the control room on New Axton are similar to a Star Destroyer bridge, and the personnel uniforms are like Imperial officers. Also the computer interface stations are built on hexagonal risers.
    Mariner is totally morose until the shuttlecraft goes to red alert, then she yeets Boimler right out of the chair. This behavior gets explained later in the cave.
    Mariner mentions the battle with the Pakleds, and T'Lyn responds by asking her if she was in that battle. Mariner says, "Yeah. Wait, were you?" So now we know T'Lyn hasn't been sharing much about herself when not on away missions with the others.
    T'Lyn throws Vulcan-style shade at Mariner: Mariner: "I could have handled that Cardassian." T'Lyn: "I have no doubt you would have tried." I was laughing so hard I had to pause the episode.
    In the cave: "You are Starfleet." "Yeah." "But you are also a warrior." "No, I'm not. My mind clears up when something's trying to kill me." "You wage war with yourself." So for the first time, Mariner acknowledges how dysfunctional her coping mechanisms have been, and is forced to face the depth of her denial. This goes right back to why she is rash in crisis situations, like yeeting Boimler out of the chair. Huge character development here.
    Also in the cave: "And it got her murdered by Cardassians!" So we find out why Captain Ramsey previously referenced Mariner's glowing achievements at the academy; Mariner had modeled herself after Sito. We also find out why Mariner uses Cardassians as her punching bags in the holodeck when she's working out. Mariner never healed from this; she has spent more than a decade with maladaptive behaviors trying to avoid her trauma. This has got to be one of the most humanizing moments in Star Trek history.
    Then we find out Mariner fought in the Dominion war. I honestly was not surprised by this; it had been hinted at in multiple previous episodes. However, I WAS surprised that her best friend being eaten on the Quito wasn't referenced. I mean, her boyfriend turned into a plant-demon and chomped her in half, spattering blood all over Mariner in the process. I guess that trauma catharsis will have to wait for a session with Meeglimo.
    Closing out the cave scene, we learn that Klingons can make great counselors. Props to Kahless for all those scrolls of warrior philosophy.
    The Bynar closed captions simply say "speaking Bynar." Thanks, that's helpful.
    We find out the Scroll Mouse doesn't overpower other vessels. The various crews mutinied. To me, that's a bit of a stretch. The writers better have a good explanation for that in episode 10.
    Mariner recognizes Nick immediately. However, she doesn't seem happy to see him.
    So we finally get most of the gaps of Mariner's backstory filled in. Some people aren't happy with the connection to Sito because it feels like an unmotivated name-drop. I'm ambivalent. It's not a totally unreasonable plot. It really brings depth to her character and that's what was important. I admit I did not expect the name-drop at all; when Mariner said her name my mouth fell open. Well done writers.
    Overall best episode of LD so far.

    Not knowing the backstory of Sito (haven't seen TOS since I was a little kid), it felt like an asspull at first because I was like "who is this friend of Mariner's with the tragic backstory that we've never heard of before on the show but is majorly influencing her behavior?!?!" But after realizing it's a character whose tragic backstory we saw play out on a different ST show, I really liked it.
    I do wish we'd seen a little bit previously of Mariner hinting at the motivation *why* she doesn't want a promotion that was revealed in this episode- specifically something like calling out "what, is being an ensign not good enough, not important enough?", etc to higher ranked officers like her mom & Ransom (doesn't have to reveal the Sito part, just hint at the "if it was good enough for her, it's good enough for me" underlying feelings) Although that just may be in the forefront of my brain from this episode repeatedly highlighting in Captain Freeman's B plot about Starfleet supposedly thinking they're better than everyone (mirroring, in my mind, how higher ranked officers have a tendency to assume everyone prefers showing they're "better" than others via getting promotions and pursuing ranking up)

Hoping for some Boimler/Ma'ah interaction next episode, giving him a bit of a push towards confidence. Then 2 more seasons because there hasn't been an opportunity for the next bit of growth. Boimler needs to get pushed into emergency command of the ship and pass through his own trial by fire. Enter the Panderverse is going to be regarded as a milestone moment in entertainment history. The woke agenda of being woke for woke's sake has corrupted the creative process of mainstream Hollywood. Mike McMahan is one of the few who recognize this and is willing to take a stand, albeit luke-warm. If you'll notice, Lower Decks has focused progressively less on wokeness in seasons 3 and 4 and more on solid plots and fan-favorite canon. People who got so turned off by the wokeness of Discovery and Picard season 2 (I'm one of them) that swore they would never watch Star Trek again, are actually watching Lower Decks. When Disney sees that all their acquired IPs are dead in the water and Paramount IPs like Star Trek are still earning new viewers, they'll get the message.

      @renrants  Před 7 měsíci

      I'll admit Joseph's comment bummed me out a bit, because at least for me, Trek's "wokeness" is part of what always drew me to it, highlighting the unseen and unheard stories of prejudice and marginalization made me feel seen and heard. It helped me contextualize a lot of the harms I saw every day around me.
      Trek is at its best when it's willing to be political and to be a voice for marginalized communities through both inclusion and allegory.
      Most of the growing pains with modern Trek are issues with adapting it to long form seasonal arcs and action heavy storytelling that Studios think are all audiences want to see. I'd even argue in some ways Modern Trek ™️ isn't actually as woke as 90s trek, despite being better at inclusiveness.

    I loved the big reveals in this and Mariner's backstory exploration. What I'm really curious about now though is Locarno's endgame. Why did he choose to go about it this way and what exactly is he hoping to accomplish? I'm really excited about tomorrow. My only complaint was that the B plot was a bit weak, but the puppet gag still made me laugh, and with an A plot like this, who cares?

      @@renrants Thank you for asking, but it took a great while for titles to come to mind. I never watched it, but The Day of the Triffids from the 60s seemed interesting. I think I would trust your judgement. There is a TV movie from 1986, Desert Bloom.
      The story involves Rose Chismore's youth. She flashes back and remembers her coming-of-age. Her recollections are sometimes less than sweet, particularly those of her troubled and alcoholic stepfather. Her memories of Robin, her first love, are much happier, and she also recalls her colorful Aunt Starr, whose visit is fun, but also detrimental to her family's health. The setting of 1950s Nevada bomb testing is increasingly significant to the development of the story.
      One TV movie that I saw on HBO was Florida Straits, with the excellent Raul Julia and Fred Ward.
      A Cuban exile hires a crew to smuggle him back to Cuba.
      Gideon's Daughter. A melancholy BBC special with Bill Nighy. It's about loss and grieving. I re-watched it quite a number of times.

      You can have all the counseling in the world and there's no way you're going to wipe out the memories of what you saw or what you felt or anything else like that.

      Background on me. I was in Iraq and Afghanistan as a hospital corpsman with the Marines. I have known people just like Mariner. Great people wonderful human beings and if you go through the stuff to take through through they come back different they come back changed. There's no such thing getting over it and the fact that you got people in reviews that do not understand that is a shame.

    • @renrants

      I definitely agree with what you're saying although I think it's also true that having robust mental health support also goes a long way in terms of giving people tools to make the burden of that kind of extreme trauma easier to process where possible and carry where not.
      That said, there isn't any magic wand, even if you do somehow get through the mental part of it, extended fight or flight and terror like that basically rewires your entire nervous system

    Episode 10 spoilers! Spoiler alert! Do not click unless you really mean it!
    IGN has leaked the trailer for episode 10. For whatever reason the showrunners thought it was a good idea to pack a 38 second trailer with more spoilers than you can shake a stick at.
    For starters, we finally learn the name of the mystery vessel. No, it's not the USS Scroll Mouse (dammit!). Nick has named it "Nova One." This is reference to Nova Squadron from TNG: "The First Duty." Also, Nick's jacket is adorned with a design of a Kolvoord Starburst, the same maneuver that got cadet Joshua Albert killed.
    This is not to be confused with the Nova class of starships. The USS Equinox seen in Voyager was a Nova-class scout vessel. So we don't know the commissioned name of the ship. I assume Nick renamed the ship much like Captain Kirk renamed the Klingon bird of prey in ST IV "HMS Bounty."
    Mariner recognizes Nick immediately, yet says that she barely knew him at the academy. Mariner hasn't aged relatively speaking, but Nick looks like a middle-aged greying man. This seems a bit of a misstep.
    Nick has assembled a ragtag fleet of all the stolen vessels. This REALLY seems like a stretch to accomplish by himself. It also feels like a callback to how the Maquis insurgency was formed. I sincerely hope the writers explain this by having Thomas Riker as Nick's partner-in-crime in episode 10. It would make the whole scenario a lot more believable with that legendary Riker charisma in command.
    They better blow the doors out next week. Buckle up.

      @@renrants I had that thought as well. It briefly was a hopeful, feel-good moment. But realistically, it would be bad writing because it would cheapen her sacrifice. It would also thrust her character into too prominent of a position.
      The only TNG character that I really, REALLY feel cheated on is Commander Sela. I can imagine a thousand ways ST: Nemesis could have been better if she had been the main antagonist. Unfortunately Gene Roddenberry was long gone by then, and he was Denise Crosby's only saving grace; the other showrunners were fed up dealing with her egotistic diva attitude.

      @renrants  Před 7 měsíci +2

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I think Denise Crosby wasn't actually that bad, she didn't often get sort of put in the background, and series back then were a HUGE comittment because the seasons were so long! I haven't heard much else about her being a diva or anything other than wanting to leave the show
