A very useful comparison. I have long been in doubt about which of his keyboards to choose. I preferred the Yamaha but at the same time I had a Yamaha PSR SQ16, a Yamaha 131 upright piano and an Arius electric piano. I was tempted to try a different brand instrument but your reviews and this comparison pushed me again towards Yamaha. Ordered with Black Friday at € 665 (I'm Italian), I get it on Monday. I'm eager to get my hands on it. Your reviews are great. Thanks.

Yes, the comparison is a little unfair because of the age of the Korg, but not entirely unfair, since the Korg is still for sale. The amazing thing is that they both sound so good. But it's nice to know what you're getting and not getting when it comes time to put your cash on the table. Also, public reviews like this can sometimes nudge companies into upping their game.

Completely fair considering this is what Korg and Yamaha both offer in this price segment today. You choose between the options offered at the time. Korg and Yamaha will not adjust the cadence of releases to 'be fair' to each other.

    Hello Jeremy
Nice review, I’m retired from over 55 years of playing. I converted to arranger keyboards in 1994 and haven’t looked back
Although korg , Roland ,Yamaha have their strength and weakness. Picking just one to use on stage can be very frustrating.
I was very blessed to be able to afford both the Yamaha and korg on stage for over 15 years with great successBoth work very well together which solved my problem
Of which would be best to use. I recently added a Roland bk3 ( I had all the Roland arrangers) I got a great deal on, to my rig setup. As of now I’m very happy with my setup. Choosing one keyboard to use would be difficult but most musicians make due with one. Again I’m very blessed. Thanks

One of my music friends has the Korg 300, he lets me play it from time to time. Fantastic board but it's now 8 years old and overdue for updates and modifications. Needs a second pedal input, some of the instrument sounds and backing styles need updating, as some of them now sound a bit dated and obviously "electronic". A few other nice moves would be to have the display screen tilt up a bit, maybe 15 degrees for easier viewer, a second keyboard split point would be great, and definitely some topside control knobs for on-the-fly/live control of the 4 sound layers. Basic functions like volume and a few popular DSP effects. Even though the Korg requires less button pushing than other brands, it's still difficult to make adjustments in the middle of the song. Hopefully Korg updates their PA series boards soon or Yamaha will completely overtake this category. And thanks for the review, Jeremy!

Nice video. One should also consider the default effects and possible turn them off which instantly make many keyboard sounds sound super dry or make it the same effect as far as possible. Dont know about these keyboards. It seems not much progress is made during a decade. Much of what these do did my GeneralMusic arranger (WX2) too in the 90's and more (aftertouch?). Hope HQ instrument samples will be finally the standard. Whats the size in MB's of these? Also Korg STILL refuses to add usb audio to their entry and mid range which is ridiculous. Many also still like to think aftertouch is something special. It aint. Time for those manufacturers to wake up before its too late. Artificial limitations are a nogo these day and age.

Excellent comparison Jeremy. I feel the Yamaha PSR - SX 600 has really good and well programmed styles. The built in audio interface and mic input ports found on the Yamaha PSR - SX 600 are also a great advantage. So, it is quite unbeatable for under $1000.

Hi, I have the PA300...the game changer for me was the onboard mp3 player, and you can play along to professional backing tracks to your heart's content, for leisure of course. It was actually retailing for $700+ (still is), got it at $600+ with online retail discount coupons, so with its specs at this price point, probably made sense over the EK50, Yamaha EW series & the complicated Casio CTX series. Just my two cents.

I've hear and comparing a lot of demo's about the styles(not the sounds) between KORG & YAMAHA , generally the Yamaha has a sweet, nice and swinging rhythm, that's the most noticeable I can say. The sound samples of both keywords are equal. It's like cooking, with the same ingredients, but the different is the chef🍜 if you understand what I mean.

Nice video, good comparison!. It says a lot about a six year old Korg can stand this comparison with the brand new Yamaha... also here is about 200 euros cheaper.... One question that keeps running on my head since your last video on the sx600: you think it is WORTH the money it cost? I see it a bit overpriced for what it does... don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic instrument, but 1000$ / 800€, in this time when technology is getting cheaper every day ,I see it a bit pricey....Regards!

Trouble is I could not find the styles I need. Tried PA-1000 in the store (cost is 2,100 US$) , it has very limited number of styles, not much more than the PA-50, so must look for more styles elsewhere.

Well, I am listening to the comparison by Jeremy who IMO is the gold standard for arranger reviewers. Some of the dueling sounds are a toss up but when Jeremy gets to the concert guitar comparison at 9:30, the Korg sounds like a toy compared to the Yamaha,. Now, Yamaha may pull psycho acoustic tricks and use effects to better advantage as some have noted here but they also sometimes appear to have superior samples, at least to my ears. That being said, it is kind of miraculous that the Korg technology, at 7 years old still hangs in there to a degree with things like a touch screen, etc.. Bottom line- I prefer the Yamaha sound wise. After all, these are basically rompler instruments with little or no ability to create novel sounds, so you better be satisfied with the onboard offerings.

Once again, an interesting comparison. I have a PA300 languishing unused which I wish to sell as it's no comparison to my Yamaha PSR-SX900, a totally different class of instrument (and I can never find time to play that!). But I was never happy with the Korg, and this demo reveals why in this more valid comparison. Some people generally prefer the Korg-type sounds, but for me, as heard here, on average Yamaha voices are more realistic (for example consider the guitar and sax voices here) and the styles more polished. However, for its day, the Korg had much to commend it and I suspect there may be a few who prefer it. For me, the Yamaha wins, but you hint at a forthcoming look at a more recent Korg, which just may change things significantly. I look forward to that (but suspect Yamaha will still be the winner, but by a smaller margin - it will be interesting to find out!).

You didn't really understand the basic idea. A few years ago, yamaha was still trying to catch up with models like: s670, s770, etc., which would compete with the masters pa300, pa600 and pa900 etc. But it didn't work out well, because korg sold models for all pockets, with samplers, large memories and big color touchscreens. The battle between the two brands was fought between the PA # X and Tyros models, but Yamaha took another ace up its sleeve, that is with the Genos model, replacing the next Tyros but without much success. Korg also has real success with the PA4X model. I think Yamaha is great in other instrument development departments, such as saxophones, violins, and so on. The new Yamaha models (sx700 / sx900) can't even compete against the pa600 / pa900. What about the new, very advanced models: pa700 and pa1000 from korg. All I have to say is "Yamaha is far behind"

Interesting perspective. I don't know Korg products very well, once tried them out vs CLP, when looking for a piano. But in the digital piano range it was more Kawai vs Yamaha (and maybe Roland), especially regarding the haptically satisfying connection with the tone. Based on this video, I would say the Korg keyboard shows its age soundwise and the UI looks cleaner on the Yamaha, although it has no touchscreen. Really would like to know how you rate the PA1000 vs SX900. What are the functions/sound/work flow where Korg has the edge? I really am asking, because I am looking for an arranger to make backing tracks and do not know much about this product category. Cheers

If you are on tight budget, Korg Ek50L is probably better than PA300, although less features, some of the styles and sound set are more contemporary. Choose Yamaha if you want more natural acoustic sounds and styles such as piano, guitar and typical live cover band sound. Korg tends to sound synthetic and thick but still ok. Like wearing make-up. More for heavily produced pop music.

great comparison video ... but is it fair to compare the latest keyboard from one maker to a six-years-old one from another? well, yes, why not ... especially when it seems like the newer one's maker's been apparently at it in the last several years to catch up with the older one? i may be wrong at that though but in the end, considering both items offer pretty much similar voices and performance options and so on, the "good old marketing trick" is seen here too: competitors come up with products that do compete with the competition but also complement each other just as well and don't fully kick their opponent out of the ring to let them continue taking their own fair share of the market as ever ... the newer product however, wins at least in one area: it's got less physical depth than the older one, thus occupying less room space in turn ... but wait, surely the older one's maker also makes 'smaller' keyboards now, right? ;-)

Personally I like Yamaha, reason being, it's easy to use. Korg is complicated. Also Korg's keys feel awkward, it's like they are loose / broken while Yamaha's feels better and intact. My next buy is Yamaha SX700/ 900.

Is Korg more reliable than Yamaha? I have a Yamaha E463. It has only been 3 years, and I already have a real problem with dead keys. Each time a key dies, I have to open up the whole keyboard and clean the key contact. Does this happen with Korg? I see there are lots of how-to videos on CZcams for how to open up Yamaha keyboards, even expensive SX ones, and clean key conacts. But there are none for Korg. Maybe this means Korg keyboards are more reliable?
