I myself was a bit surprised by how sort of quickly he changed in personality during this part of the series. He was slightly rather against her at first, but then started being more caring.
This is how the 1950's were ... I lived in them as a young girl and just loved these kids ..... Tim Considine especially !! Don't kid yourself .... movies and life in general was much more relaxed than today. That's why it's so fun to re-watch these. Seems even today's Disney movies are filled with scary and violent images :-( Sad.
It startled me a bit when I first heard that they were singing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" during the hayride. Second time another Disney Animated film song is referenced in this show. Earlier was when Katie sung "Whistle While You Work" in a previous episode.
Because of Uncle Archie being a bit stuck-up at first and having no experience in raising a child, it was quite a bit surprising to me when he started being more nice and caring towards Annette by this around point in the show. And I was quite amused and impressed by it.
You really need to be a pre-teen watching in 1958 for this to be the most fun. It was an ongoing serial, so you got an episode 5 days a week during the Mickey Mouse Club. Many of the "other kids" are Mouseketeers, as Annette was. You can even see Shelley Fabares ("Johnny Angel") as one of the girlfriends, which is interesting because I don't think she was actually ever a Mousketeer. And I believe she and Annette were lifelong friends. I loved Judy Nugent, who did come from a show biz family- her sister Carol was married to Nick Adams. The maid, Mary Wickes, was not just in Sister Act but many many movies from the late 30's onward. Annette was clearly the "breakout" star of the Mouseketeers. If I recall we kids ate up this serial - hated Laura for being mean to poor Annette, cheered when she got her comeuppance, etc. I agree it is a totally false view of life, and you did kind of doubt that the Italian Annette Funicello was just arrived from "the country", but it was great fun.
This is Disney. It was a serial shown within the framework of the Mickey Mouse Club that was on every afternoon in the late 50s. This was one of the most popular ones except for Spin and Marty. There were none of the things someone down below posted. People weren't the same then. They didn't use profanity every other word and they had manners.
That's a 1957 Mercury Montclair - our next door neighbors bought a new one, baby blue and white, and I remember riding in it on several occasions. I thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen.
Her name is Judy Ann Nugent...her father, as I understand it, was the property master at one of the Hollywood studios (I believe it was MGM)...to Superman fans she played the blind girl, Ann Carson, Superman helps see again in the episode "Around the World"
@porcellaga Considering that everyone has a "midswetern" dialect, the Northern Pacific would be more likely since they are referring to farms as "ranches." The dialog even suggests it: "Out here we call them ranches."
I am 23 i may not have ever seen this on tv when it came out but this is way better then that new Mickey mouse club crap I even have some of there songs
LOVE that Convertible ... would be worth a small fortune in that condition, these days!!! I can't quite place the model but I think it's a Studebaker ... a lot like the Chevy Bel Air but I don't think its one of them.
Possibly Hazel? Based on a comic strip. She was played by Shirley Booth. Sorry! Very hazy about timelines. I wasn't allowed to watch much television during the week; weekends were mostly westerns, although I don't remember much about them, either! LOL I did get to watch MMC at a neighbor's after school on Friday (day off from ballet school)--parents arranged for the mother to watch me after school. Both parents worked--not quite the "typical" nuclear family. Good times, though! ...Teale 🏜️
Yeah. There is something to be said for old black and white shows and movies. I used to think they were boring. I appreciate them now. They are just as good as colorized shows and movies. Just don't ever watch Shirley Temple, unless it's "A Little Princess" or "The Blue Bird" in color. For some reason colorization ruins a lot of old films.
Nope it's Judy Nugent sister of Carol and cousins to Ted. She left show business to take her feminine duties as a wife and mother seriously and doing right by her race.
LMAO! I seriously doubt there was EVER a time where teenagers got together for a wholesome hay ride and sung "Zip-pa-de-do-da"! LOL! Such a hysterically false representation of life in America. Disney even insisted dark Italian Annette have white bread relatives.
The times they are a changin (& not for the better) Uncle Archie told about hunting bear with dogs. We use to be able to do that here, but thanks to alot of out of state Libs moving in, it is now illegal to hunt for any game (except birds) with dogs in CO
@@christinegruenberg3120 I know what is so wrong with using a dog to bait a bear. Who cares if it is dangerous for dogs. They also ruined putting out food to lure the bears as well. Farking libs.
I absolutely love Annette's uncle...what a perfect example of a great father image.
Yet he had no experience with kids! More to admire!
I myself was a bit surprised by how sort of quickly he changed in personality during this part of the series. He was slightly rather against her at first, but then started being more caring.
Richard Deacon's acting in this one cracks me up. Curious what the directions were for his delivery. He's so comedically wooden.
Great to watch Annette

I ❤love that song 😊❤
2:55 Uncle Archie checking it out. Sure beats watching Lumpy going up stairs.
Steady is my hero. He has all the girls doing his homework.

The toast flying out of the toaster reminds me of a scene from I Love Lucy
Reminds me of the toaster my roommate and I had at university! LOL
Had to be prepared for the toast to blast out!

He is understanding, kind, thoughtful more importantly very supportive of Annette.

At 9:25 she's wearing black and white between the kid with the guitar and the short kid, Steady I think they call him.
I was 11 when I watched this show. I'm Italian..but didn't relate to her as an Italian girl..just a pretty teenager that I admired.
It can be fun at any age! :)
I'm a 40 year old woman, born 20 years after this originally aired and I am fully enjoying this show :)
@@JustNess78 The hottest girl was Jet Maypen. Annette looked ridiculous with high eyebrows and a silly walk where she just shuffled along.

Annette is so beautiful
Annette is a CUTIE.🤩🤩🤩
@@davidwesley2525 I think she has silly hair and ridiculous eyebrows. Jet Maypen played by Judy Nugent was much nicer.

Is Judy Nugent alive?
Why did she take the role of Jett Maypen in the first place?

People have priced these antique cars off the charts.
Girls like Annette do not exist anymore...😢
Im 11 and this is awsome than what we have today
how can the ranch be that far if jet goes to school 2 blocks away every day from her ranch.
Jet said she took the bus to school...which is located a few blocks from the house where Annette is living.
@porcellaga Considering that everyone has a "midswetern" dialect, the Northern Pacific would be more likely since they are referring to farms as "ranches." The dialog even suggests it: "Out here we call them ranches."
I'm guessing the town is based on Ashland, Oregon.

The cook is from Sister Act.
And The Trouble with Angels, and Where Angels Go Trouble Follows, The Man Who Came to Dinner, etc. Mary Wickes had a long career as comedic actress.
@@jonwiley2592 and "White Christmas" plus a few score more. Check Google to find more!🎈🎈
@tracker415 Yeah, I don't know if Uncle Walt would have gone along with the newer stuff.
fourthgirl; I read some where that Sharon is 4'8" tall.
I think that's because Annette, Mike and Steve are the stars of this serial.
This series stars Annette Funicello as the loving Annette and it co stars Tim Considine as Steve while David Stollery as Mike.
BTW, Lovebug8779, the names of the actors appear from 0:01 to 0:18.

Basketball? That shortie? Don't be ridiculous!!!! LOL
watching this show i seen annette mike and steve and the cast that play them but what about the other cast members
You're right -- and she was equally hilarious in both!
is katie the first sassy maid on tv?

"They Were Expendable" is better colorized, or just about any movie filmed in the Pacific Islands.
@Mollidew - Amen!
annette.. changing a tire? thats pretty lit for a girl :D
At least they had a full size spare tire. Most cars now just come with a can of compressed air.
And uncle Archie didn't even doubt about Annette's action on that
Remember Annette lived on a farm so she probably knew how to change a tire.
@fourthgirl About 1.50 meters, more or less.
