- Over the years just a few car manufacturers have built and used the huge and iconic flat-12 engines and between them without a doubt Ferrari and Porsche are the most famous. This video includes all the cars I saw powered by this type of engine so I hope you enjoy it!!

All of these sound wonderful, but the 917 is on a whole other level. That thing sounds like a true mechanical symphony.
It'.s that air cooled configuration on the 917 that adds that extra sound. The water cooled engines sound slightly muffled even with straight pipes as in the 312 and 512 Ferraris. Heard the entire Ferrari team idle past while practicing for the 1969 Sebring 12 Hours They were all blipping their engines to keep the plugs clean. Gave me chillbumps

The 312PB is one of the best sounding vintage engines to me. The raspiness on downshifts is amazing!
I find the 917s more smooth and not as angry sounding, like a flattened out sound.
Completely disagree. Have you ever seen these cars in real life? The 917 sounds nothing like as good as the Ferrari.

If only our current day cars didn't have monotone engines that barely make any noise and actually had more than 500 HP at the engine. This os real racing with real variety. It truly shows driver potential and skill when completely varied cars can race together on the same track without one completely dominating. I love it.

Can we all admit that open throat carburetor 12 cylinder engines are the best sounding engines ever? It never gets old. Porsche, Ferrari, Matra, Alfa, etc all had epic sounding 12 cylinder engines. Boxer or V.
That gorgeous supersaw sound of perfect primary, secondary and tertiary balance.

@@SimsonTuningteamOberlausitz Don't start with that V12 bullshit. It is horizontally opposed, there's no bloody vee anywhere! Crank pin location doesn't change the cylinder layout! There are various crank pin spacings on V6 and V8 engines but that doesn't change their vee shaped cylinder positioning or what they're called.

These cars sound is absolutely wonderful, especially compared to the engines sound of nowadays cars, which is totally ridiculous for racing cars. But the Porsche 917 beats all of them. Fantastic!

It's quite a great experience but what I love the most of these engines is standing a few meters away during the start up and the warm up. Sometimes it seems that even the earth is trembling and not just you XD

Iamwarthog ah cheers, I never knew that was there. Oh yeah, that 333 SP is something special alright. Man I love that kind of electronic V12 sound, it's beautiful...! I think the 333 SP won Le Mans, I'm not 100% but I think I heard it before, maybe 1998, around then.
Apologies it was American Racing where it done all its winning, 6th in 1997 was best Le Mans result.

How loud is this porsche 917 compared to a r8 lms ultra or to an trans am car, this are the car that are in my country, maybe a 917 will never come, so i want to know a reference to know how loud it is please

Porsche have built some of the best ever reliable race cars but if you read reviews of the Cayenne it’s not good. My point is why can Porsche not translate the race motors to the Cayenne in particular? Fair question?

Anarchy Truck Pulls If you are being serious, you would probably have to contact a machine shop and have them make a flat 12 to the specifications of one of these older ones... They aren't used in modern cars and classics are hard to come by, therefore making one is your only option...

RegalCooper Flat 12 definitely sounds a bit more raspy and guttural. V12s have more of that piercing scream. Low RPM they sound relatively similar, but it's at the top end of the RPM range you can hear the difference.
the ferraris are not " true flat engines " they are 180 degree V engines

watching this made me realise just how shit and soulless modern cars are . whether its f1 or endurance or road cars . i dont care if a laferrari has 963 bhp . a ferraris engine has always been its heart . a laferrari has a heart but with a battery pacemaker fitted . its just not the same . give me a daytona or a 512 bb any day .
