I couldn’t resist myself, and after watching the first few episodes, I realized there was actually a lot to say about the medical aspects of this show. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s distopic Korean sci-fi thriller is brilliantly entertaining, but is it medically accurate? Today we talk about the danger of eating blood, diabetes, sleep-inducing gas, ankle sprains, nerves in your fingers, amputations, boxing and punching, punctured lungs, thermal cameras, neck cracking, transporting organs, surgery, organs you can live without, dimentia, alzheimers, brain tumors, fevers, hyrdation, urination, and red light green light ;)

5:23 This was actually huge news in Korea that some doctors, not just one, had been making their nurse aides go into the surgeries instead of them. And some nurse aides performed hundreds of medical procedures without getting caught, well, until the doctor got caught.

yes, and they were called as ghost doctors because the patients were unaware of this situation
@@johnsorrentino7173 it was not just because of this scene but it was because a patient had died from losing too much blood after a plastic surgery and that was one of the breakthroughs to multiple cases as such.

My favorite part is that there were unconscious people in the van already. That means they already got gassed. Now we see them getting gassed AGAIN with no ill effects. Then, as you pointed out, they all woke up at the same time. Now, that last part could be that they released something else into that room to counteract the gas but that creates a whole other layer of possible chemical reactions.
I mean, they do continue to deliver gas through a mask for maintenance of anesthesia even after the initial induction, so idk if getting anesthesia while you're already unconscious is necessarily unusual or a big deal... if they gave them oxygen masks or something that prevented them from breathing in the additional gas, they would probably wake up after a pretty short time, so if anything this kinda adds to the realism by explaining why the first one to get gassed doesn't just wake up after 10-30 mins
Idk if irl anesthetic vapors have any antidotes that are also volatile so I doubt they would have released a sort of wake up agent into the bunkhouse.

That old dude in Red Light, Green Light has a big smile on his face because as the creator of these games in the movie and someone who is dying, chose to take a spot in the games to live his life.
Red Light, Green Light was the first game. Old man's first game and he was excited to play a children's game he probably played as a kid.
His diagnosis of game three reminds me of a Jeremy Clarkson quote: “speed has never killed anyone. Now suddenly becoming stationary, that’s what gets you”

So, I'm not an anaesthesiologist but the gas looks like the one they used on my surgery a few days ago, which, btw, your videos have really helped me get through it cause it's a painful surgery.
when u watch his videos till the end he shows us a video to watch so kindly that it warms our hearts and when he says '' stay happy and healthy'' u get heartburn resulting the mike paradox

@@MiloMcCarthyMusic force is equal to change in momentum with respect to time, he just has to be able to apply a great enough force to change the momentum in the given time interval, I’d imagine with an adequate stance he could apply the needed force especially since it looks like his momentum is mostly angular and not translational thus the force would be more parallel to his body and driven into the ground

I could never watch anything that is dubbed. Not only does some of the dubbing changes the way the conversation goes, but most voices are cringy to hear and so not compatible with the character..
I haven't watched it in English, but from this video alone, I'd say is pretty decent. It's not the same as the original, but no dub can be either
I would also like to note that the bullet would not have stayed perfectly formed like that, a bullet like that would have pierced through his shoulder and shattered into fragments upon hitting his bone, fracturing the bone in the process as well

@@yez9475 In English, there is a slightly more drawn-out version that can be played where kids go 'Red light, green light, one, two, three,' and they turn around on 'three'. So that could've been used. The song (or this) is more suspenseful than 'red light.... green light!' because people could say it fast or slow, or start off one way and switch up by the end. You don't know what's coming.
In terms of creepiness, it's a matter of something so innocent being turned into something so deadly and having a little kid singing it is the icing on the cake (because kids in horror content are generally effective, lbr lol) but also because, how did they get a child involved in this? you know?
It's okay if you didn't find it creepy - just explaining why some other people did.

Anesthesiologist here: the three most common inhaled anesthetics are isoflurane, desflurane, and sevoflurane, none of which are super realistic in this scenario because of how variable the inhaled concentration would be depending how far you are from the vent that's putting out the gas, which I assume is the inverse of r^2, meaning doubling the distance cuts the concentration by 4, although I guess you can turn up the concentration super high and hope a healthy heart can handle the myocardial depressant and vasodilatory effects of the anesthetic and 🤷 if it cant

My guess was similar. I think each time one of the characters gets into the car, they administer the gas again to everyone. That means the first person to get in the car is also getting hit with like 5-6 more doses. Good luck surviving that!

Literally, as she pulled out the glass, I was like "DOCTOR MIKE WOULD TELL YOU TO LEAVE THAT IN STOP IT"
That’s exactly what I thought at the time too, I screamed at her to leave it.

I think the only reason she pulled the glass out was because she knew she couldn't hide a glass injury like that when she had to get dressed up. It would poke the clothing and make it obvious that there was something in there. And that in turn would make Sang-woo know instantly that she got injured which would make him try and kill her that much sooner because he'd see her as an easy target. The only reason she pulled it out and tried to continue like that is because of that reason, she didn't want anyone to know she was hurt and hiding an injury like that with the glass poking out was not possible.
I think it actually worked too because I don't think Sang-woo realized she was injured at all until Gi-hun screamed for help at the door, which gave him a chance to do what he did.
Since the reactor is reacting to all the medical scenes, I'm assuming he's seen the entire series.

Here the staff is referring to a recent medical scandal in Korea where an "office manager" was caught performing the surgery in place of a doctor after the patient had gone asleep -- there was a CCTV footage of it. The investigation followed revealed the doctor knowingly have led this practice not only this time, but 747 times in the past. The doctor ended up receiving only 4 months of suspension and that was all, enraging the public.

There was another video i watched about an under qualified medical student performing a surgery on a patient too, the patient eventually died due to blood loss and it was shown that no blood transfusion happened. These doctors are apparently called "The ghost doctors" more scary than actual ghosts.

It was so confusing when I realized these scenes are translated, I'm used to watch all series in the original language with subtitles, even though sometimes the translation is not the best I prefer the complete acting experience. If you like Squid game, I recommend Beyond Evil. Nice video Dr.

I'm the same! I just cannot stand watching dubbed live action. It just looks like out of sync audio. Much prefer hearing the original language and reading the subtitles. You even learn some words and phrases along the way! It's even how a lot of people learn/refine foreign language skills
Me too! And US dubbing in particular is horrific. There are no perfect dubs but my, we do way better dubbing in Latin America. I'm not from the US so I really don't understand why they don't like reading subtitles.

Yeah no, the reasoning in the show makes sense well enough. But like Dr Mike said, he doesn't look like he has the correct frame to actually be able to do that (which is likely true, the actor himself probably wouldn't be able to catch and hold him to steadily. Irl he wasn't actively falling when they set up the shot.)

Anesthesiologist here: I have never done an inhalation induction as fast as Hollywood makes it seems but the most likely legally available combo could be nitrous oxide and desflurane. That combines the use of the second gas effect with two relatively insoluble gases leading to a quicker induction. The problem with just diffusing it in the air is the uncontrollable nature and inability to guarantee either a high enough concentration to get them to sleep vs too high a concentration leading to respiratory depression. Also desflurane can be a bit irritating to the airways so not commonly used as an induction gas, but more of a maintenance anesthetic.

I’m an OR nurse and I guessed sevoflurane. That stuff is pretty fast acting and short acting right? I figured desflurane would mess up your respiratory response. I didn’t even think about nitrous! I don’t see it much used in neurosurgery which is where I usually live.

I'm a paramedic and the anesthesiologists I shadowed used sevoflourane (don't know if I spelled that right) and another gas through the et tube. I can't remember, but they used them for the predictability of the short wakeup time once the IV sedatives and paralytics wore off 🤷🏼♂️

5:27 It was a direct reference to a current issue in Korea where the lead surgeon would leave the operating room and just have other people (like residents) operate in their place. Thus the issue of whether to install cameras in ORs came about.

Dr. Mike: Ah yes, this is what we in the business call "Dying," it's a very common side effect of living that happens to 100% of humans, typically ages 80-100, but can happen sooner or later depending on if you pissed off some divine entity(ies) at some point in your life

at 1:18, during my internship at the hospital, I've seen patients coming out of surgeries. The nurse had to wake the patients and keep them awake. The nurses had to be very insistent.
If you look at the squid game seen, the room was dark and quiet. Then they opened the lights and put some music.
This looks somewhat believable because patients who have been sedated have a tendency to remain asleep without a stimulus
As for the gas, it could be nitrous oxyde or formaldehyde, but these gas would not be visible and they seem to be acting too quickly.
They could have used CO2 to displace the oxygen to make him pass out.
But all these gas are potentially dangerous, and maybe not all contestants survive the ride and we know they don't care about these people's lives anyways.

Basically the old man is behind the game. But he participated in this particular game because he has a tumor and so he wants to enjoy his last few days. He things playing is more fun then watching. He made this game because he doesn't believe in humanity, he feels no one helps the needy and so.. I don't know through this mindset he creates this game for the low financially people.

I know of a first year student who was allowed to close on a heart surgery. I won't tattle because he was a pretty awesome guy and that was a huge thing for him.
The surgery scene… It’s been quite a big issue in Korea that some doctors actually let other staff members or medical device sellers do the surgery instead. The director is dealing with the issue.

5:30 nurses and medical equipment salesperson really do operations in Korea. The doctors even do multiple surgeries at the same time. We call it factory style operation. Because the doctors have so much power, they don’t get punished by law or lose their license no matter what. Even if the patient dies during the surgery

Of course, you can have your appendix removed and still live on.
Most of us haven't got the purpose of an appendix, but there is a disease called appendicitis, where your appendix starts to rupture, giving you many symptoms like stomach pains, abdominal pain, headaches, loss of appetite, rigid stomach, feeling sick without being sick, nausea, vomiting, and a bunch more.

my uncle suffered from a major brain tumour on both sides of his skull he went deaf and 60% of his skull remained he couldn’t get plates for the parts of the skull was eaten away from the tumours, his children have lots of ear and throat problems today
