I had a lot of books going a couple of weeks ago, but then I just decided to pick up the oldest one and finish it and make my way through them all! I just had to put my mind to it and say to myself: Today, I read 150 pages of this book and until I have done that, no internet or other distractions! I'm now happily reading only one book now! So proud of myself!

Typically I read 2 books at once. Usually one for entertainment, and another for personal growth. Entertainment at night, and the self improvement early in the day. An hour of fiction before bed really gets me tired for good sleep and the earlier books will get me in a more thoughtful, mindful mood the rest of the day.
For example, sometimes a sci-fi or fantasy or mystery. Then for the self-improvement I'd read authors like Eckhart Tolle, Don Miguel Ruiz, and so on. I won't pick up others until I finish the two.
I stay more focused and become a little more well-read and also more knowledgeable for life with the new ideas I get from certain authors like Tony Robbins or David Deida.

I always read one book at a time. I once tried to read a few books at once, and although it felt like I was reading 'faster', I really felt like I wasn't as immersed in the story as I should have been. For me focusing on one story will allow me to fully enjoy it :)

I love reading multiple books at once! I'm not always great about finding a new book to read when I finish another so I like to have some in progress. That way when I finish one I can just straight into another that I already know is going well. Unfortunately right now I have finished all the books that held my interest and I'm having the hardest time getting into some new ones...

This was an awesome topic. so glad you filmed this mini rant/discussion video. I myself am able to read multiple books. I have to limit them to 3 max maybe an addition to an audible book & honestly it can get stressful. the trick in my case is to put a cap on it. 2 books 1 audible & not peek into any additional books on my TBR till I've finished what I am currently reading.

  • @sophieaylmorebooks

I've always found this topic fascinating, especially when you add the factor that you have a booktube channel. The added pressure of all of us watching...always watching! heh! I'm always pestering booktubers in the comments about how they handle the pressure of a big tbr! So I was go glad when I saw this video pop up in my sub box :)
I really liked this video and think you should pick up the camera more often and just have chat or rant about whatever is going on with you reading life! It's not weird and ranty at all, you're really good at it! and it makes for great conversation in the comments section (my favourite part of booktube!) It was an awesome video!
More then one or two books on the go sounds far too draining.
With books that are a collection of short stories or essays I find them frustrating because they don't compel me to read them in one sitting so I just have it on the go in between others. This really annoys me and why I'm so reluctant to pick them up. I like to pick up a book read it, finish it then put it down. Done and dusted, but they just don't lend themselves to that. Then I find myself with too many books to finish. SO frustrating!

I only really like to read one book at a time now but have been in your position before (before I finished my degree) and it was stressful.
Something that worked for me personally was sitting down and deciding what I HAD to finish and what I would LIKE to finish.
The like books I then put back into my to-be-read pile enabling me to psychologically switch off from them. For me this immediately felt like a wait of my shoulders. My mind stopped racing so much and reading for pleasure became a pleasure again :)

This is totally irrelevant to the overall discussion of this video, but every time you hold up Mortal Engines I get SO CONFUSED. I always think it's a video game and then you flip through the pages and I just WHAAAT
I am okay with reading multiple books if they're different on some level? Like I could read a non-fiction and fiction book simultaneously, no problem. But if I were to try to read two different epic fantasies at once, NOPE. If I end up with more than two books being read at once, it's probably a sign that I got into a reading slump and was trying to get out of it by picking up new books. Which eventually works... but then you're in the middle of multiple books. I finally got my Goodreads currently reading shelf to one book after months of have like five, and that's always really satisfying. hahaha

Nowadays I only read one or two books at once (one fiction one nonfiction) though usually just one. I find if I try to read multiple fiction books at once, I tend to just focus on one of them and finish that one. Good luck finishing all the books before the end of the year!

I totally feel you :) Same here - but add to the audiobook, the kindle short stories, the three books I've put down because I wasn't really in the mood, the one I'm reading on the toilet, the graphic novel, the one my husband and I are reading to each other aloud, and the one I'm actually reading alone, the books I'm reading with my son: one audio, one my husband reads aloud at bedtime, one I read with my son alone at bedtime, and one for afternoon reads...
I am fine with most of it though, except for books I've put aside when I haven't gotten past pg 50. Because when I pick it up again, I'll start from pg one and that just feels like homework - and I then the book really has a hard time winning me over again....
So, if I have put aside a book early in the read, it usually takes me months or years to pick it up again.
    love your hair, btw... :)

This is me right now! In reading multiple books some get left on the back burner, and when the forgotten are long books, it can be months. I hate this because I used to sit down and read massive books in one sitting but I don't have time for that so they sit there begging me to ignore everything else in life and read. I am used to reading up to 10 books at time and will always read multiple books at one time, but when the number stays near ten, things get stressful.
The absolute most stressful part of reading multiple books is not finishing any for weeks when if I had focused on each one I probably could be done with them all. I loved the way you said it's really like you're only reading 3, only I add to that that all the other books continue to haunt you and stress you. You begin to grow thin because you're stretched across all these different stories. It's stressful. The only thing to do while in its midst is to rant- discussion is for outside of this chaos.

If you want to read multiple books at a time, you have to HAVE TO *HAVE TO* read completely different genres. Otherwise, they'll muddle together. I also find the same thing happens if I read multiple books in a short time, like a series. I shotgunned The Hunger Games, all three books in three days. I only stopped to eat, or I didn't XD, but I couldn't tell you the sequence of events for each book because I'd start getting them all confused. PJO as well. Those books took me about a week and I get the 3rd and 4th book mixed up all the time. -_-

I'm reading 4 books right now and the reason I do that is because some books get boring for me so I put them down and pick up another one to try and keep my reading life a little entertaining. There are times when I have a priority book to read over others for example for read-alongs or reviews but I'm usually reading multiple books at a time until I find one that I really cannot put down. I just find that for me personally, it's easier to read that way and also ensures that I finish each book even if I don't particularly care for certain ones.

I'm super comfortable reading multiple books at once, but I do get agitated if I'm not regularly making progress in all of them, even if its just a chapter or two every few days. Since I take the bus a lot, I'll usually rotate which book I bring with me that day, which really helps.

  • @priceiswong
    @priceiswong Před 9 lety +1

UGH I do this too! I didn't do this before I started BookTube about 2 years ago I don't think... and then every now and then I'll find myself picking up a new book that I'm just SO EXCITED about reading so I'll put the other aside. This has worked okay with like super new and exciting books that only take me about a day or two to read. For example, when the Blood of Olympus came out at the beginning of the month, I put a hold on every other book and just stopped and read that for 2 days. But then once those 2 days were over, I just went right back to the others. It's not a big deal.
The problem is when I start a book or two that I read over a week or two... and eventually it will be over a month or so since I've picked up the first book. THAT'S when I have issues. I always feel so pressured. I just need to put 100% of my energy and concentration into reading ONE book at a time, and that's it. Then when I finish that one I can move on. But for some reason that's easier said than done!

This same exact thing happened to me actually. On my blog, I accepted too many review requests and blog tour reviews from authors (more than I could handle). I basically need to have 11 books reviewed on the blog before the month of November ends. You're so lucky that you don't get mixed up with books because I can't avoid that. And it's even worse that it's my first year of high school and the workload is larger than normal. I honestly don't know what to do because I don't want to lie and act like I read the book when I post the review. But there are just too many books! Hope u complete ur goal in finishing and clearing out your stack by the end of the year!

I agree that it's quite stressful reading multiple books at once. Sometimes I feel guilty moving onto another one, but eventually I just put the others away and pick it up again when I'm in the mood...whether it be a few days, months or even a year later. The most I usually read at once are about 4-5 but even then I find that I get tired or bored of a story and put it away. These days I don't feel as bad when I have a lot of unfinished books, but usually when the new year rolls around I kind of take a moment to gather the books I've paused on and decide if I want to finish it or not.

I started doing the same thing this year too! It's so stressful and it makes me feel really unproductive.
One of the things I do is that if I'm reading a book but I find myself really not enjoying it, I just drop it (this is something I would NEVER do before). I do this with books that I just plain don't like and with books I just lose interest in (with these I do make a plan to pick them up again at some point) It helps a little bit.
I wish I could do the same thing with the books I have to read for school, though.

  • @angelekay3843
    @angelekay3843 Před 9 lety

I'm in a similar situation when I'm in the middle of like 9 different books. My solution was to prioritize them in my TBR pile and only read 3 at a time (two for school, 1 for fun...sometimes the other way around), and then sort of shuffle through all the ones I haven't finished before I start anything new. Of course, I ended up putting things on hold to start a new book in a series that I need to finish, so that I won't forget what's happening in the series by the time I get around to the 3rd or 4th book in it. It's working pretty well so far, I'm making progress on my TBR pile, but unfortunately...I've also been adding to it by picking up books from the library every time I check to see if the one I have on hold has showed up yet. It's a bit stressful to have such a large pile of books with bookmarks in them, but I think as long as I try to keep it under control and only actively read 3 at a time, I'll be ok.

  • @kinfolkmedia

My currently reading pile (that goes in my backpack/book bag wherever I go) is limited to 3.
    1) Graphic novel or short light reading, for times you want to read but don't want to get sucked into a book i.e. waiting for a class to start.
    2) My current book that I'm reading for fun... my choice, I get absorbed in the world. I read this on the bus to and from school (an hour each way)
    3) School or Book Group Book. Not my chosen read this one but I work through it for class or booksplosion/little book owl's group etc. Often end up enjoying ones I never thought I would.
On occasion, there will be 4) The "in case I finish my current read and need its sequel or a new book to read"
But usually only 3 at once. One from each category

My M.O. is to start books and then if they are boring, pick up another one. I still continue to read the boring one but only say a few pages a day or week instead of every night. Case in point...Red Glove by Holly Black, that book took me almost 4 months to read. My problem is I don't drop books regardless of how slow they are. I just keep reading even though I don't want to lol. Good luck with catching up on them all. I was thinking of doing a catch up reading month maybe in Novemeber or Decemeber. We'll see.

I think the way I read usually reflects my state of mind. I prefer to read one at a time and really get into it - however, if I'm feeling quite scatter-brained and restless, then I find myself reading four, five different books at a time.
What I've done is create a Goodreads shelf titled 'try again later' - so if I just don't have the time, or have lost interest in a book, it goes there, and I know to look there first before venturing into the forest that is my TBR list. Sometimes a book will go back and forth between my currently-reading and my try-again-later shelves several times before I finally finish it, but I have a much better reading experience when I do, because I'm able to enjoy it without all the self-induced pressure/guilt. :)

I work in a bookstore too so sometimes it feel like a book on the shelves are calling to me to read it. My way of tying to keep this not being stressful is that I try to read one book in every language that I read (three) and a book project. A book that will take me a long time to read for various reasons, recently because they are big. For me that tends to work but I totally understand what you mean.

I get overwhelmed with the goals that I set myself. How many books I want to read vs can actually read. The library throws off my plans usually, when a book that's been on hold for months finally comes in right at the moment that I'm tackling 2-3 other reads. Right now, I'm reading 4 books. *sigh*
Thank you for your rant. It's nice to know someone else is in the same spot.

I usually read only a book at a time, but for the last month and a half it's added up to 4 (or maybe 3, because one of them is on my kindle, but sadly is not working anymore, so i had to put that book down for a while). I'm new to this but i feel like if you read different genres is not that big of a problem. Although I wouldn't read 3 really dense books at once.
Hope you can finish them little by little, don't put so much pressure on yourself! ♥

I used to only read one book at a time but lately I've started reading a few at a time, depending on my mood. I've been kind of slumpish so I start one, put it down and start another, and then I go back and forth. Right now I'm reading The Oath by Paretti but it's not a fast-paced books so I read a chunk and then focus on something else. I think it helps to complete more books, at least for me personally. I don't let it get too out of hand usually. My "Currently Reading" list may have a handful but I'll only be actively reading about two. :)

I feel you! I'm currently reading 4 books, which is a bit less and it's not really a problem but I feel like I'm not doing anything at all. For me it's not even uni or anything else so I've no idea how I got myself into this. Sometimes I look at them and I can't decide which one to read so I end up watching TV shows... it's a vicious circle

Currently reading many books for uni, one physical personal book, and 2 kindle personal books. Mostly focused on school books now, but I recently finished two other partially read books. Sometimes I just lose interest and don't come back for a while, and then can't pick it back up very often during the semester.

I enjoy reading multiple books at one time. The only time I do not do this is when I am reading library books. Most times I read them one at a time. I have just recently gotten back into listening to audio books. I tend to listen to them when I am cleaning, riding in the car, walking, or even when I am going to bed and do not want to sit with the lights on. I tend to have one Kindle book going on with all my other reading as well. Right now though it is library books. Need to ban myself from the library and read my TBR pile some.

I had this problem often when I was in undergrad because I majored in literature and psychology, and we read quite a few novels in my psychology courses. This is also about the time where I started accumulating books that I never ended up getting around to.
I think it all relates to the issues of multi-tasking. If you focus on more than one thing at a time, you do neither thing as well as you would if you focused on one.
I say don't pick up any new books until you read the 7 books you mentioned. Focus first on books for school, then the blog tour book, then the few you are reading just for your own personal enjoyment. Set a goal and reward yourself once it's met (I can't buy a new book until I finish the books for school, etc.) It motivates you to get through it, and it gives you a chance to focus. You probably feel guilty picking up even one of them because you feel like you should be reading all of them!
It happens to everyone, but I agree with you that having that many books on the currently reading shelf is way too stressful!

I really read to learn the craft of writing as well as enjoy the story so even if I'm reading just one book and don't pick it up for a few days I feel like I'm forgetting things. But I'm trying to handle a few books at a time just out of necessity right now, but they're different genres so that helps. When it comes to reading multiple books, although they are not fiction but people's biographies or 'how to' books. I tend to set a specific amount of chapters required to be read and after the task has been accomplished I try and summarise the main ideas with the addition to finding a common link in between them. In a way you're training your mind to able to jug the knowledge from different sources. It doesn't work all of the time, however it develops your intuitive way of thinking.

Seeing my Goodreads currently reading list at 6 freaked me out, so I took a couple I kind of sat aside off the list for now, but I'll get back to them. I also have a book I'm supposed to have finished by now and I'm barely on chapter three. I've also written an essay about without finishing it! I'm trying to read it more, but it's nonfiction and since I hardly ever read nonfic, it's a slow read for me. I'm hoping to get through my currently reading pile by the end of November, but if I can't get through it by then, I will try for finishing on the holidays.

I often read several books at the same time, but NOW I avoid reading more than one fiction at the same time. so, usually it is one fiction and several on different sometimes related subjects. As I enjoy reading really big novels I usually am attracted to other books before finishing. Right now I am reading a collection of short stories, a book on art mediation, two books about music and one on woodblock printing (plus things that pop up). I try to read either books that have some sort of relationship or totally different.

  • @Stacey_casual_cozy_gamer

I usually have an audiobook, E-book, and a physical book going at the same time. I tend to get start a book then loose interest or something else catches my attention and that is how I end up with a stack of books to finish at once. Usually I don't let it get to me. I just have a stack that waits for me to come back to it, which generally happens.

YESS! I totally just didn't freak out cause you're reading Mortal Engines, totally. It's a really good book, I've read it 3 times and the series is brilliant (the new covers I dislike but that's cause I have the original covers). I'm trying to think what happens at 20 pages in but its been a while and I currently don't have my copy on me. I don't think you would've met Hester Shaw yet; or you're just about too. Keep reading, it's a really good world and a bunch of fab characters that don't necessarily fit stereotypes or tropes. Particularly Hester, she's my favourite character and I am sure you'll find out why!!

I have a really difficult time reading multiple books at once! I'm currently reading two books at once (one for a buddy read and one for a school project) and even that is giving me whiplash. I end up losing interest in the book I'm reading for pleasure and end up thinking of other books I want to read. I also get so emotionally invested in the story I'm reading that when I add multiple books I become too drained to read. Even now with the two books that are on my plate I find myself avoiding reading and doing other things.

I`ve been in a horrible reading slump and haven`t finished anything since September 19th. I started 6 different books, but none of them sucked me in even though I know that I`d enjoy them a lot if I weren`t in a slump. So I`ve been reading a bunch of webcomics online and if they`re on Goodreads, I`ve been adding them so that I don`t feel as stressed out about falling too much further behind on my goal. But I still feel like I`m reading some of the books I started, even though it`s only like, a chapter or two in a couple days. And if I started a bunch of books when I wasn`t in a slump, I`d just fall into one.

I read multiple books at once quite often. I take notes on some, for example, I'm taking extensive notes on Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces. I read a myth a week from Bulfinch's Mythology. If I'm in the middle of a leatherbound book, I only read that one at my house, and I'll have paperback novellas which I will read in the bathroom and in public. The informational books I'm taking notes on, so I do not get confused with them, the myths, like the Grimm Fairy Tales, are short and I can finish them in one go. And I can balance the novellas and the leatherbound book.
I was unsure if this would overburden me at first, however, I related this reading experience to watching multiple shows at once. It is quite easy to distinguish many tv series you are in the middle of, the same goes for literature.

Ugh, this is me right now too. I've been doing a little better over the past couple weeks because I've been working on getting my Goodreads currently reading shelf to a less stressful size, but I still have several books I started reading and then set down ages ago. And I have so many other books I need/want to read right now. I'm usually okay with reading multiple books at once, though I do try to limit myself to three--two physical and one on my Kindle. I don't have trouble mixing the stories in my head, but the more books I start at one time, the less likely I am to finish them quickly. Last month I had about seven going, and even with the extra reading I've added on, I've still managed to keep my list down to around five. *shrugs* I guess this is a common problem. :P

Awesome topic- it's great that you can read multiple books without mixing stories up or getting a headache. I can only tolerate at least 2-3 books at once, and still get a bit stressed with mixing stories up haha xD
As for unfinished books-I know it's not great to continue reading a book, even if you don't like it as you go, but I can never leave books/series unfinished. Even if I dislike it. I'm working on fixing that habit haha !
