When you're beginning to read, dont force yourself to read a book a week, just gradually get into it and you'll actually start to enjoy it
This! I'm not much of a recreational reader, so I cant see myself reading a book/week right off the bat.
Let's keep in touch?
Yeah also with the genre too. If you don’t want to read non-fiction, read some fiction!
Exactly! I read now systematically during my train commute (25 min forth and back = 50 min a day, times 5 days, that's 4 hours a week I read now instead of scrolling on a black screen. And then often times I continue reading some more at home. And what you get is compound interest!
Agreed
Read three books about any topic in the world and you’ll know more than the majority of people on that topic.

I used to watch Netflix as reward at the end of a productive day. But now, I use reading before going to bed, 30-60 mins. It helps me to fall sleep, and follow the 'No screen time' one hour before sleeping.
Is it really a good Idea to read before sleeping ? I mean my brain is too exhausted and is not at 100% so it wont process the content efficiently, and sometimes my eyes feel so down. can you pls tell how do you do ?
@@DL92_ maybe do it 3 hours before bed so you're not too exhausted and you're able to focus . Or maybe do it when you wake up instead of going through your phone ,read a book
@@DL92_ if u feel too tired then don't read then. Best time to read books imo is in the morning or after u wake up from sleep. Ur mind stays fresh that time and u can digest anything u read.
@@DL92_ Yes, I read light stuff, mostly self-help books these days. Completed Atomic Habits and Psycho-cybernetics this way, currently reading Power of Now. You can try fiction...

I'm pretty sure the secret to being smart is to read. A lot of people think smart people are just born that way but I think it has to do with reading as a kid.
Well, a lot of it has to do with your personality. Your upbringing, influences. Also IQ plays a role and you don't have any control over that at all.
@@bigword3744 wrong it has been proven countless times that IQ can increase just like anything else. Research it
@@charmedcaster15 Well, sort of. Crystalized IQ is something that might improve with age or with the deliberate practice something intellectually challenging. But your learning speed which is tied to fluid IQ is something you can't do anything about.
Let's keep in touch?
@@bigword3744 @Dominik Bilinski @Dominik Bilinski Actually no. obviously the crystallized intelligence , which is basically the library of the brain , can be simply increased by acquiring more information . Fluid intelligence , which is the creative intelligence , can also be increase . Well the more technical term is "tap into more " let me clarify we all have immense logic and creativity but it is how we train our mind to access them that's what differ . And that is why there is countless testimony of writers who could not write " dug deep " into their mind and accessed higher level of intelligence , both logic and creative intelligence , than they already did. it is simply how the brain function . Even more so many who have practice the creative arts and also scientific "arts" have found that their fluidity has increased a lot due to the fact that the way they look and perceive physics ,for example, has changed they were able to make new link between information as if they were painting something. Personally i dived in listening to classical music a while ago like " experience by Einaudi " and when i was reviewing my studies basically by visualizing the information that is how i review( i have just started my masters in biomedical science ) and the most beautiful thing happened basically i was at a low level alpha state and at the same time of visualizing my studies i started remembering the music and the images in my head started speeding up and slowing down with the music and i truly felt that i have mastered the information because , if only you can see what i saw , all the information started coming into my head and my brain started putting them all together and linking them correctly and from that day on after doing this several times it became automatic to me i started to understand things much easier and faster and link them correctly to one and other my learning capability has truly increased even my teacher has noticed that i started , frequently might i add, to understand things directly after they are said .He even stated that in the classroom that my ability to "catch thing" ,as they say, very quickly is what set me apart from the rest . And also what helped me to make it automatic is actually expecting it to happen your believes are very important to access more of your potential in any area intellectual or other . And like i said earlier i read a long time ago ( which helped me in this conclusion among other thing) is that a physics girl started painting and later on started to see physics as if it was a painting and her learning capability increased.

I read every word, too. Skimming is not reading. It’s skimming.
Tbh it really depends - with fiction books depending on how detailed it is I can skim but non fiction is definitely one where I can’t skim bc I have to read the pages two or three times actually. Detailed fiction is a no for skimming too but tbh if the book isn’t that detailed and complex then I can skim read (I don’t do it very often) Skimming is obviously still reading but if you’re skimming a detailed book and not taking anything in then the reading sessions is not very effective
@BabyUnicornio but you're still technically reading the words when skimming - I'd say when I skim read I still read about 75% of the words on the page I just miss out words in between - you've still technically read a book even if you skimmed it if you understand the book/know the plot (most of it anyway). The literal definition is 'look at and comprehend the meaning of written or printed matter' and if you skim read a page and understand most of what is being said without needing to read it word for word, I'd still count the book, as a whole, as being read.
Usually I tend to skim through "modern" books I solely read for my own satisfaction or because of a recommendation. However, when it comes to classics or authors where I notice a peculiar / masterful writing style, I tend to read each word, sometimes even repeating certain pages to fully comprehend every sentence and most stylistic devices (for me, as a non-native speaker, Brave New World is a great example of such a novel). It‘s like the difference between truly watching certain wonderful shows or movies vs binging through each season of some mediocre ones.
for me, i skimmed through fiction books when the author is describing something or use long phrases to describe an action. For example, the author would write “He turned the doorknob. As he applied pressure on the door where it’s wood came from the finest wood cutter from Southeast Asia. The door opened” where its literally him opening the door. So yeah if the author is using long phrases to describe an action I’ll just skimmed through.
I completed agree @nonuora. reading a book isn't just about gaining knowledge, it's about the experience. it's slow at times but it makes it worth it when you absorb each word instead of rushing to get to the finish line.

Hello, can you guys recommend a good book to read?
More important than reading a book per week or per month is to really take time to think about it, and put it into practice!
I’ve recently started to limit my time on social media and started reading more. I feel so much happier and clear-headed. It’s amazing!
Nate, thank you for being an inspiration to us all. Keep up the good work! :)
Buying and reading a book is *one of the best investments* you can make to yourself.
If I could love this comment I would! Writing this down!

I read a lot and I'm still a loser tbh
I started Audible a few months ago and since then I’ve listened to at least a book a week WHILE WORKING, on topics like finance and personal growth and it’s been the best decision I ever made!
Can you give us some insight in what events happened to you that made it the best decision for you?
Pisauce Sure! I had just finished 3 years of flight training to become a commercial pilot only to run into Covid. I lost both my jobs at the airport and couldn’t find a flying job either so I was extremely bummed out. I actually started mowing lawns around my neighbourhood and it took off. I realized I could pay back debt quickly doing it and also realized I could listen to books while mowing to maximize my time. I’ve paid back all my debt, built an emergency fund, and I’m starting to invest all because of the new knowledge I have from listening. “Atomic Habits” by James Clear was amazing. Hopefully aviation will rebound next year and I’ll be able to find a flying job! (I live in BC Canada)

I'm not a native English and I'm improving my English and my knowledge as well by reading English books
Cool, but I think one's aim should be to read WELL, not to read that many books in a short period of time. I was once in a reading session with a couple of friends, one of whom I considered well-read, we were reading Shakespeare. I was surprised at how careless their reading was at times, skipping a lot of things they deemed 'irrelevant' or just didn't feel like rereading, researching, etc. I think this sort of mentality that you find sometimes in some self-help outlets is terrible. Read constantly, yes, but with method and WELL.
Yes! Quality instead of quantity!
How do you read well?
I've never agreed with a comment more!!! Preach it, Cesar! You hit the nail in the head!!!
i learned and fully internalized this mentality just yesterday when i stumbled upon r.c. waldun's channel
@@user-hg7vr6uy3b Making sure you understand what you read. But even that could be elaborated much further, since depending on what you read there are multiple levels of understanding, and understanding itself can be construed in different ways. 99% of the books that are worth reading are like this. This requires rereading, reflection, going back and forth, care at the word -- heck, morphology/phonology level, because form = content and vice versa. Even if you're doing the most base type of reading -- which IS the level of reading of most "self-help" stuff divulged on this and other channels (Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People", for instance -- and this is no criticism; I appreciate the literature), you'd better be doing some careful reading of those, too, in order not to be wasting time. I bet that if you take just one of those and really attempt to incorporate it into your life, you should be yielding better "results" than people who read 150 books per year...
I'm going to read a book now.
Ha ha, right?
Nowadays I just come on CZcams to listen to you , I feel a lot of encouragement when ya inspire me to read more and more,, thank youuu 🌸

Also hearing it from their own mouth literally can be super powerful sometimes. Having that accountability is huge too. This was my new year resolution this year. I've been able to keep up with reading a book a week even with working full time and being in grad school. I loved reading as a child and was an avid bookworm, but by high school I wasn't reading in my free time. I started by making it a goal in college to read one book a week for each week of school breaks (4 for winter break and 16 for summer break). I think reading is one of the best ways to improve yourself.
I’ve finished my first book in years this month! Now reading the next one. Honestly, I’ve stopped trying to read for the sake of reading and it’s worked! I now crave reading!
you're such a wholesome young lad. im crying.

I love reading but recently I started listening to audiobooks. It helps me intake content a lot quicker. Great video.
Love to see a book club! To read better, best to read what you're super into, on top of locking up your Insta...
Agree with all your points. One that I would add is that if you’ve never been an avid reader the best way to start reading consistently is to find books on topics you’re actually interested in. Don’t read a book just because it’s a best seller, or because someone told you to read it and “it’s going to change your life.” It’s much easier to do that when you’ve built up a routine or don’t have the preconceived notion that books are a waste of your time.
Also, just a reminder, you can read a lot of self-help books but if you don’t implement some of the things you’ve learnt then there won’t be any change in your life. Read a couple of chapters, try something you've learnt and then read some more. It's a lot easier when the ideas are fresh and you have motivation.
i stopped reading avidly (a bookworm then) when i started wearing glasses. i set a goal to start reading again during lockdown. but got so tired WFH about 10hrs a day. this week going back to work again, and found it so hard to adjust to working lesser hours. i will pick up a book again (my bookshelf is filled with books - read only a few pages or chapters) to start filling up my time! thanks Nate! i will use this vid to move fwd! i don't think i want to join a Book Club yet till i finish reading at least 25% of the books on my bookshelves! All the best with the Book Club! 👍😉

I’ve been on one book each month. Started December 2019, will bring them up to two books per month when I can free up the time
I usually read whenever I feel that I want to read and I believe that it is best way to read a book rather than compelling oneself to finish a book within a particular period of time.
In my point of view we should enjoy reading instead of creating a pressure on us and I really enjoys reading novels.🤗

I think for me there was also a pressure going through school to read really terrible books in a set amount of time and then analyse them which really took the enjoyment out of reading and made it feel like a chore, I find that now I am much happier reading again although there are other reasons like you mentioned so I still read a lot less than I used to
A book is what started me off on my own personal journey to financial freedom. That book was the intelligent investor by Benjamin Graham. It made me realise I could achieve financial freedom through the right investments!
I’m like 7 chapters in, what did you take from it in the end?
The Greg that book is freakin hard to read “”
v3r as someone who’s young and so far just has a decent knowledge of finance, I agree. Some of the stuff I’ve learnt so far is great, just need to know it’s worth it
Love that book too!
That book flew over my head. Have to try again.
Loved the video, the book I most recently finished, The 4-Hour Work Week, really opened my eyes to that possibilities of life.
Wow this is awesome. You articulated this well and I very much needed to hear this. Thanks !
Nowadays I read more than I used to read when I was a child because I didn’t have a chance to buy books.
Reading opens us up to new ideas, thoughts and concepts. Without books, we wouldnt be as smart or creative
Love you Nate!! Thank you for being a good guy. ❤️
Love love love!!! This is a great reminder for me to read more books that will impact my life
*Reading books are great* . _Although I think there's probably more value in having 3-5 books you always come back to rather than just absorbing new info every time_ 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Steven Vander Hoek Finance great question Steven. I’d say;
1) rich dad poor dad
2) 10x
3) trust me I’m lying
4) 48 laws of power
5) The richest man in Babylon
What about yourself?
You aren’t a 90s baby if you haven’t read the Harry Potter series at least three times 😂 Great video!
Finally found a real informative channel! Thanks mate! Yay new subscriber 😃
I really appreciate you making this video, thank you ✨
I''m doing a book a day right now (audiobooks) - has TOTALLY shifted my perspective of what's possible when it comes to learning!
Love this.
“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.”
― John Locke
Love that quote
During the lockdown I started reading more everyday. So much that I got inspired to start writing and hopefully my first book will be published in August. I discovered new genres that I had not read before and that I really like now.
Heart of Kentucky. Hi Nate. It's good to read something over your head, occasionally. The day will come, you comprehend it. Katie.
From seeing the thumbnail I can guess you lost sense of reality and somebody stole all your furniture while you were reading a book for a week?🤔
Oh but they left some books in exchange so I guess that’s not fully bad
Hey I like your videos! :)
Chirag Singh are you guys married yet?
😂😂
@@Finn959 yep, sorry I didn't invite you to the wedding.
Buying a kindle changed my reading.
You get the lightweight easy access and all the knowledge from the books
Erick Maggerrick but it is a different, for me less entertaining, feeling
Hi Nate! I really enjoyed the way you explained things in this video although it has been a quite common trend to associate reading with the most famous "successful people" (in order to be "successful" do you really have to be in the spotlight of media and making tons of money??). In fact, reading has proven to have more benefits beyond inducing you to become a business-leader or money-making machine. It would be interesting to see you exploring these other benefits too. Few that come to my mind are the improvements in mental health and the long-lasting gratification of reading books since it takes more effort. Anyways, cheers to you for reading this much. It's a great achievement!
I just subscribed and hit the notification bell! I love the contents of your channel 🖤 Keep posting!
I know it's not ideal, but I'm starting to follow Nancy Drew series, because it's interesting and it would help me to build the reading habit.
Good!! Starting is the best step
I keep buying books 📚 but never get time - like you say, too busy & distracted. At the end of a hard day I just want to lie down and watch something and rest my eyes from those spreadsheets!
@@MagicMetalMoney I may just have to do that - start getting up early to read before work :)
You make some good points, I enjoyed the video. People definitely aren't reading enough. However in my personal experience, I hated reading when I was in school because I was forced to read certain books. However after High School, I discovered reading again through books that were actually interesting and enjoyable. I now, as a 35 year old enjoy reading very much. I read in English( my native language ) but also in German, as it's important to combine reading with language learning. This can be a powerful tool. Btw, I just subscribed
