Hi! As for the construction of 9-storey buildings in the USSR, everything is simple. The construction was regulated by state standards (GOST), which prescribed the rules of construction. In addition, the mass construction of new houses had to be as economical as possible, i.e. contain no frills! New houses were supposed to contain a larger number of floors, but the cost of their construction had to be reduced to the minimum possible. 1. According to GOST, 1 elevator must be installed in multi-storey buildings containing more than 5 floors. And in houses from 10 floors and above there are already two elevators - freight and passenger. 9 floors is the maximum that can do with one elevator! Saving on a freight elevator! 2. Houses with a height of more than 28 meters must necessarily be equipped with a non-smokable staircase. 9-storey buildings were built at a height of about 27 meters! Saving on spare ladders!

    • @user-lm5ss4ji4p
      @user-lm5ss4ji4p Před měsícem +17

      3. During the construction of houses with more than 9 storeys, special requirements were imposed on the soils. For this reason, it was not allowed to build high-rise buildings everywhere. That was a problem. 4. In addition, in the 70s, every house needed to be supplied with gas. For houses above 9 floors, the construction of a special separate pumping station was required, and this was too expensive and did not fit into the budget. Houses of 12 and 14 floors were built. Every apartment there was equipped with electric stoves. But all this required reinforced electrical wiring and substations and led to additional unplanned expenses.

Exactly. More or less the same here in Brazilian cities. It depends more so now on the overall density of the earth. Since Russell hit us with this trivia. I actually looked out and counted even the costly building. Lol. They don't truly go beyond 12 floors. Got to love all history huh? Lol

Houses in Russia have exactly 9 floors, because during the years of construction of such houses people were usually settled there for free (as citizens), and there was not a lot of money. This was due to fire safety requirements in those years, because the fire ladder could reach a maximum of the 9th floor, and then it was necessary to make fire hatches in the balconies of each apartment and service them. This required a lot of money, so they were limited to only 9 floors. Now the ladder can reach the 14th floor. Also, for 9-story buildings only one elevator is required, and for a 10-story building there are already two. Also, for five-story buildings an elevator is not necessarily required, but for more floors it is already needed.

The best video of Russell ... in history. The majority of apartment videos are fluff / hyperbole. As a serious buyer, I want facts -- not opinion ... meat and potatoes ... not cake with icing. If Russell produces more of these apartment videos, they would steer more traffic because food is food ... all the same ... regardless of the kitchen or plate it is shown on.

Hi Russell! 9 level buildings because of the old 28-meter fire ladder. That was exactly 9 floors ladder. So fire safety first) And moreover as far as I know, you were not able to build an apartment building higher that 9 and use natural gas in their flats. Alex from Govorovo.

Excellent video Russell. How interesting ! It's certainly an impressive city. I've been a couple of times on business but 10 years ago so I'm sure it has changed since. I suppose the city I live in now, Istanbul with up to 20 million people rivals Moscow in many ways. There are 4 business areas that would rival and possibly surpass this place in terms of skyscrapers etc, plus an integrated transport system incorporated tramways, trains, underground metro, bus, cable cars, ferries to cross between the Asian and European side of the city plus an underground tunnel that crosses under the Bosphorous. The great thing is, one card can be used on all these systems, which can be topped up with cash or on a mobile app which also doubles up as a card itself. I'd say Istanbul is Moscow multiplied by 2 !

@@Alx_T. Brian M is right . I do business in both cities in the process engineering field. Moscow is a fantastic city but it's very much smaller in terms of infrastructure and financial centers than Istanbul. Istanbul has a number of business financial centers and hubs in the city and the four I personally know are all bigger than this. Of course Istanbul and it's geographic location as the link between European and Asian trade and commerce, is bound to be far bigger than Moscow.

@@brianmsahin Don't be so ridiculous and aggressive when you talk about Moscow and those who disagree with you.
Don't be so ridiculous and funny when you describe Istanbul, sputtering with delight.
      Basically, don't be so ridiculous!🙂
No one argues that Istanbul is larger in territory than Moscow.
But by population - how to calculate? Officially, the population of Istanbul is 16,047,350. The population of Moscow is 13,154,178, but in reality, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, there are twice as many people in Moscow every day, 25-30 million people, taking into account those arriving from everywhere and working from the Moscow region. According to estimates by the mayor of Moscow, up to 40 million people are drawn into the life of the capital’s agglomeration.
It’s very funny to read about the praise of Istanbul’s transport system compared to Moscow. For example, the Istanbul Metro (Turkish: İstanbul Metrosu) consists of 7 lines with 104 stations. Now the Moscow Metro has 14 lines and 342 (!) stations, of which 250 are metro, 31 are MCC, 61 are MCD. Every year, following the development of the capital, these numbers are only growing. Here Istanbul loses by more than three times.🙂
In Moscow, all buses have long been replaced by electric buses, and there are no harmful emissions.
“The great thing is, one card can be used on all these systems.”😂
This “great thing” has been working in Moscow for many years, and is called the Troika card, and when using it, travel and all services are cheaper.
The Troika card is a universal travel card for Moscow public transport. You can write any paper ticket or “Wallet” ticket onto it.
Troika allows you to ride on ground passenger transport and the metro, Aeroexpress trains, commuter trains, the Vorobyovy Gory cable car, Velobike rental bicycles, Whoosh rental scooters, etc.
In addition, it can be used to pay for passage to attractions, museums, the zoo, the skating rink, etc. This card can also be used on electric water trams that float along the Moscow River. Do you have an electric water tram?🙂
A video about the electric water tram in Moscow can be seen here, from Russell.
*The UN recognized Moscow as the best metropolis in the world in terms of quality of life!*
The Russian capital beat out major European and North American rivals to claim the top spot. The UN has published its global cities ranking for 2022 according to UN-Habitat's City Prosperity Index (CPI), and has awarded Moscow the top spot among large cities for quality of life and infrastructure, commending the metropolis for its transportation and its citizens’ well-being.
      Also,
*Moscow has received the main prize of the World Travel Awards (Oscar in Tourism) in the nomination "The best tourist destination" in the world* in the category "City" for two years in a row! ahead of such cities as London, New York, Paris, Sydney, Lisbon, St. Petersburg, Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Geneva and others.
      Etc, etc.
"I'd say that Istanbul is Moscow multiplied by 2. "
That is, 50-60 million people live in Istanbul? I don’t even want to comment on this ВS.
"Where do you live ? In your parents basement ?"
Dude, you are very wrong, don’t judge others by yourself!🙂
I live with my wife in a big house, 700 sq.m. close to Moscow, on Rublyovka, if that tells you anything. My children don't live in the basement of my house either. They live in the center of Moscow, in large apartments and have a very good well-paid job.

Thank you for the cool video, Russel! I always wait for your videos with anticipation and watch them with pleasure. As for you question about why they only built 9 floor buildings? This is why - they stopped at nine floors for a very good and economical reason: houses with a height of 10 floors and above, according to safety standards, had to be equipped with two elevators (regular and freight), as well as smoke-free fire escapes, which required additional costs. The cost of one square meter in this situation did not pay it off.

The most common explanation - corroborated by Russian firefighting authorities - is that a standardized, low-ceiling 9-storey block is the maximum that can be reached by standard fire engine ladders (AL-30 model specifically). Actually in case of Moscow it is a misconception, sort of a selection bias. 12-storey and 14-storey standardized buildings are as common, if not more common, as the 9-storeys.
