    It’s the second part of my 1860s transformation dress series. Today you’ll see the process of making a corset based on a pattern from Norah Waugh "Corsets and Crinolines". I’m going to talk in great detail about how I cut and connect the panels, make bias tape for boning channels and use flossing (embroidery on corset’s boning channels) for both functional and decorative reasons. Feel free to ask me any questions in the comment section, I’ll be happy to answer them!

      You can do it! It's really not that complicated. Corset may seem overwhelming because there's so much going on, like busks, boning, eyelets and grommets, but in reality this is just some pieces stitched together with straight lines 😃

    Hello! I have a few questions and I am sorry if they sound stupid, but I am a Newby in historical corsetry and sewing in general. My first question is about seam allowance, from the video it looked like you cut it as big as the paper pattern. I wanted to know if the seam allowance was already included in the pattern or, if not, how big it should be for corsetry. My second question is about the assembling part. I thought corsets were sewn together like clothes and the seam ending were on the inside, but in your corset the seams were on the outside (the right side I think) while the inside looked "more clean" . Is it always sewn like this or it depends on the fact that the corset was unlined? If the seams ending were on the inside would they fray a lot? That's why they stay on the outside and then they get covered with the boning channels?
    Again I am sorry for these questions.
    I just really love your work and I hope one day I will be even just half as good as you.

    • @Ninonella
      @Ninonella  Před 3 lety +4

      There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if there was, yours wouldn't be one of them :)
      1) The seam allowance wasn't included in the pattern, I added 1cm (3/8") in Photoshop before printing. But you can also trace the pattern without them - you can see that in my 1840s corset tutorial. 2) Yes, it's because the corset is unlined. But there are many different options - you can put seam allowances on the wrong side and cover them with boning channels on the inside (basically making the opposite of what I did), you can also use welt seams... You can leave the seam allowance unfinished, but it will fray and look messy, and it's just easier to hide it under boning channels.
      Also can I recommend an amazing source for beginners in corsetry? czcams.com/users/AraneaBlack
      She has so many tutorials on CZcams and her website and also corset patterns in many sizes, and it's free! Listen to her and you'll be better than me in no time :)
      DM on Instagram if you have more questions, I don't always see the replies here. And good luck with your costuming journey!

    omg im trying so hard to cover my seams on the boning channels bc i sewed them wrong, you can see the main seam tht holds everything together between the boning channel. im trying right now with ribbon to cover those seams but my lines are CROOKED. im struggling! but i think ill just hand sew a thick edge over it to try and hide it all.

    • @Ninonella
      @Ninonella  Před 2 lety

      I'm sorry to hear that! You can also try to hide it with some other decorations, like laces or trims. Or just leave it as it is, if you're going to wear something over your corset.
