Making a late Victorian Corset

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
New project in historically inspired costumes means new underthings. At least for me. I probably could have used a corset that I already have, however I love making corsets and really enjoy them as a project. The construction is really straightforward. So to make this corset different, I decided to go extra with the embellishments. I ended up embroidering like 60% of this corset and I regret nothing (except a few blisters on my hands).
I used Sugar'n'Craft cotton cord, the same I used for my corded petticoat. It is lightweight but stable, easy to find and cheap! I'm not sure how much I used but it didn't make much of a dent in the skein. The corset took me about two weeks to make, not counting the corset drafting and mock-up process.
A BIG THANK YOU to friends who helped me through Ko-Fi on Instagram (ko-fi.com/V7V7.... I wouldn't have been able to make this corset at this time without them.

This is absolutely gorgeous. If you ever decide to take commissions, I’ll be your first customer!
If you paid yourself minimum wage, took into consideration the cost of materials, and then doubled for profit margin, how much would this cost, if it were for sale? I would think at least $1000 USD, which feels right, this is true craftsmanship!
Perhaps Ms. Cat needs to join or organize a corset makers union like in the late 1800s or early 1900s ?
I told my mom I was going to make a corset and she couldn't stop laughing.
Thats super rude. If you wanna make a corset, go for it! Foundations revealed has some super nice articles about corsetry that could help you fulfilling that dream ;)
Dude, arena black is the best free resource online. They aren’t “historically accurate”, but they take you step by step and have and have tons of free patterns. I’m about to make a Dolores :)
You can do it! Don't expect your first one to turn out perfectly, but we learn from our mistakes!
@@MiahGrace Is that a website? I've tried searching it up but can't seem to find it
That is insanely rude. I am sorry she did that. I think you should go for it! I think you would do great!! I am in the process of making my first corset!
SPECTACULAR! Historical sewing channels like yours really enhance the beauty of handcraft, helps people actually see how much work goes into a well constructed piece. Beautiful!
i think thats my favorite silhouette of corset, and fashion for that matter, its very shapely and extreme in its own way, but the curves all flow so nicely that it almost looks natural anyway
Great job! The embroidery on the side panels really enhances the optical illusion and it is so beautiful.
Yet another gorgeous project! You make it all look so simple. My daughter bought the book on corsetry and left it here before we all went into lockdown - I may actually have a proper look at it and see how difficult it actually is :-)
I fancy myself as a fairly talented seamstress but this looks very challenging! I hope you charge a small fortune for these if you sell or indeed fit and make for a client. So many skills, well done ❤️👍
oh my god this is incredible and I am in awe. rip your fingers on that embroidery but it looks so unbelievably beautiful. the side panel embroidery adds like another level of the visual witchcraft and it is stunning.
It's beautiful. I'm flossing a corset right now and this must have done nasty things to your fingers! Well done.
This is beautiful! In the future though, if you're going to fell the seams don't clip your curves. They will bend just fine after felling. :)
Wow this was absolutely stunning!! The finished pieces is truly marvellous. I hope you have a good thimble, that hand embroidery was hardcore!! I say this as someone who has done 200+ hours of hand embroidery on a denim jacket - the things we do for our hobbies! I would love to make a corset as beautiful as this one day. ❤
Another comment mentioning how beautiful this corset is. 😄 The embroidery is my favorite part (an extra nice touch over the pretty cording, too). I like the variety of patterns you used for embellishment.
It's so beautiful! Embroidery: is that enough? No! 😂 Now I want to do lots of embellishment on my corset 🤔
Don't mind me, I'm adding to the barrage of comments proclaiming how stunning this corset is because it truly is insanely marvelous!! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Your work in this corset is utterly stunning
What a stunningly beautiful corset
But can we take a moment to talk about Cat's thimble? I want one.
Stunning! I am curious how long did this take you?
this took me about two weeks, not including the drafting and mock-up stages! I think 5 solid days were spent embroidering haha
Absolutely gorgeous! I adore watching you hand stitch and embroider. It reminds me of doing that sort of thing, but I'm now getting arthritic hands so sad it kills me. Enjoy it while you're young, my dear. Well done!
Absolutely stunning work all around! I love how you included your mistakes, and how you carried on in spite of them. I often get so frustrated when I make a mistake that items get tossed into my unfinished object stack, never to be picked up gain! You've inspired me to dust them off and carry on, too 😊.
I can't believe my eyes. OMG, that is incredible! Subscriber from Florida.
Beautiful work. I’ll never try to make a corset, but it was inspiring to watch. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely gorgeous work! Such attention to detail!
I use the same kind of friction pen when I'm sewing, but I had no idea they came in other colors!
That's ridiculous. So gorgeous!
Oh my goodness- this is just so beautiful! The extra work you did on the embroidery is enchanting, especially the side cording - really stunning. Thank you for sharing!
This is fantastic!!!! I wish you put a shot of the back with the lacing at the end, even if some of the eyelets were loose.
Great job, Cat!!!
Cat the finished corset looks GORGEOUS with all the beautiful gold embroidery. Bravo!
All the embroidered details are really impressive, and the variety of patterns makes it so interesting to look at. I usually keep my corsets simple, but this makes me want to try one thats more decorated.
It is beautiful. The embroidery looks unique
My biggest problem with corsets is my bust lol 😂 I have tried to make my own never again! Im completely impressed
I'm almost crying because it's so beautiful... That hard work paid off for sure! And the video was soothing and highlighting your steps as always.
Thank you. I’m about to start an 1890s corset. This was great to watch.
Gorgeous! Your embroidery is wonderful.
ALL that embroidery was ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!
I just finally got around to watch this video. Your embroidery turned out gorgeously! Very glad my tip to work with frixion pens helped you to overcome your fear of marking fabrics :D
This is just beautiful work. I can’t imagine how long this took in real time. Even when I do a one day project the time lapse is real! Everything you did to make this is lovely.
But she said how long it takes in real time. I am confused about so many who asked this in the comments...
This is one of the prettiest corsets I’ve ever seen. All that embroidery was absolutely worth it!
You are so very talented, and this is just a beautiful beautiful corset. Thank you for sharing very educational
Incredible work as always! Though I know it would have been absolute murder on your hands, the embroidery really elevates this corset into something incredible! Especially on the side panels, it really highlights the beautiful shape this corset gives you. Just stunning.
Wonderful video!!
I loved the process!!
The corset was perfect!!
It is a really beautiful corset - now I understand why they are so expensive! The handwork is incredible.

if you ever decide to start selling them, I'd buy. it's beautiful.
If that took her two weeks before affording the materials? Sounds expensive.

This is beautiful!
This is so pretty and the side panel embroidery is definitely worth the effort!!
This is amazing. I apreciate all the embroidery. The more the better. Interesting color choice. Nice to see something other than shades of red. Well done. I aspire to make a corset. I have been teaching myself to sew so i can make one. I failed at the first attempt of clothing went to quilting. I am collecting supplies needed to try and make a corset. Thank you for the video.
