- ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is all new and But is it better than the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 EcoBoost? We decided to find out by putting all three pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup by having them tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Ford F-150 EcoBoost up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
In this third TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow over 7,000 pounds of old American Luxury car 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

Kent brings a lot of real world experience to these videos. I'm glad that he is here.
Kent is awesome. Just a good ol' truck fan no matter what the brand is. He gives real life opinions on them without a bunch of bias! You dont hear him saying stuff like "ford sucks" or "chevy is trash."
Yep. Kent is great.
+The Fast Lane Truck I would expect a bias against Toyota as Ford and Chevy have been in the truck business longer. Great video, Thanks!
Here's a helpful suggestion. Please email GM and tell them you want to see the mashup with the towing rear axle. We can only test the vehicles they send us.
Silverado may have limitations in towing, but I think its the smoothest ride of all the large trucks.
Try towing with one with a heavy axel it has the highest towing capacity in its class.
You guys should try old trucks. I have a 93 Chevy 1500 and I always wondered how it would compare to different brands of the same year!
They'd have to tow 2/3rd's the weight and they would still be significantly slower. Don't get me wrong, I love old trucks, but were talking abot 400hp + modern trucks vs a 1993 Chevy which with the 350 TBI V8 of that year barely made 200hp.
Watching this in March 2020 because I own the 2014 Chevy Silverado and it’s amazing!
Same here lol
Would be really great to see that same test with the 3.73 axle that they offer.
TFL made the best of the situation with what they had even if GM failed to bring a proper gear ratio. Awesome work guys and the best truck mashup I've ever seen. I just wish the RAM and Titan would of been on the test as well.
I have a 2006 Nissan Titan that has the adjustable cleats on the sides, bottom and rear of the bed and it has the torsion bar in the locking tailgate. Also has plug in power ports back there as well as lights in the bed.
The 04 Titan had these things way before Ford or Toyota. It also has a power rear windshield standard, as does Toyota.
A for effort guys, really enjoyed in depth review of the trucks
Thank you. This is a fun show about trucks. Good work.
turbos are good for boost but will eventually break . if you lease ok but for long term purchase your looking at a very big repair bill
Another great video! I really enjoy your real world testing and honest opinions. The one thing to add in the interference from the poles on the side of the road was a bit annoying, but there is nothing you guys could have done.
Thanks for using your signal. You mentioned it's ride was good, from the boat view it looked really bouncing.
happy with my Ram Hemi. 395hp/407lbt and 3.92 with the 8 speed. just magical for towing!
Since I jump onto tailgates, I really like the grippier tailgate lining on the Chevy. No gimmicks, no BS, just exactly what you need. And one fine pushrod V8!
I hate when people have something to say against a truck brand. GM, Dodge, Ford there all good trucks, perform good, and tow alot of lbs with good dependability. Me i just happen to be a Chevy guy and im loyal to it. Same goes for alot of dodge and ford guys. But if u got something bad to say against any trucks (for example: ford sucks!, chevy is weak, or dodge is trash) dont even comment then please! Thank u.
Hell, for a person talking about being nice, it’s interesting you’d choose to leave the Toyota out of your comment entirely. Is that your sly, underhanded, way of saying “something bad” about the Toyota - it’s not a good truck that performs good and tows a lot of pounds with good dependability like the other four trucks you actually do mention? It certainly appears so.
Dwight just get out of here.
Mr. Question
Right. Like I'm going to obey you.
***** Causing drama is your job on the internet? Come on get a life.
Mr. Question
Guy, you responded to a comment more than 18-months old (early 2015). It appears you think creating drama where none existed is your mission in life. If so, you really need to get a better life.
so how do you know the towing capacity when buying a chevy silverado ?
Well that was a fun comparison guys. Good job. But I still don't understand timing things if you're going to keep it at 60mph. Either it can do 60 or it can't. What if it can do more?
I know this is a stupid question but what is the song/tune at the beginning
Do you think with a after market cold air tank, ported throttle body, and a 3” cat back exhaust system would help the Silverado?
Needs a re-gear for the rear end.
Question. I'm assuming the new silverado has a tow haul mode, were you using it for this run. I have an older GM and once it downshifts it tends to hold the gear quite well
EcoBoost technology allows the F-150 to race 42 seconds ahead of the Silverado and 3.2 seconds when put against RAM and Tundra while towing at Davis Dam during the J2807 tests. And that's just a 3.5 mile portion of the actual 11 mile grade!
When they release the 6.2's, could you guys do another towing test with one with the max trailering package?
all the new trucks are good in my opinion, i guess it just comes down to brand loyalty and which one you think looks the best. ill stick with GM.
your right unfortunately modern day truck are all about features now and days
Hello gents! It's always a pleasure to review your videos! But correct me if I'm wrong Roman, but wasn't it Nissan that had the damped tailgate first? Along with all the other clever tie down options in the first gen. Titan! I have to say, I'm a Chevy fan and have owned a number of trouble free Chevy cars and trucks. So I'd like to see the Chevy do well, but it's not really set up very well for work and play-adventures! But it's still a nice truck. So thanks Chevy! You need to have aMax Trailer Tow Package truck in the press fleet! I have to add though with all the talk of gear ratios, why hasn't a manufacturer offered a two speed rear end? Or at least make standard a 4:11 gearset, for heavy hauling and towing. But when your after mileage and smooth running, add a gizmo at the output of the transmission to multiply to revolutions of the driveshaft? Yes in S 4x4AWD truck you would not be able to take advantage of that type of multiplier, but it would open up a whole new option for those who need that versatility! I know there are mechanical and engineering requirements for the size of the ring and pinion gears the higher you go numerically, but all manufacturers have 9.5-9.75" units! After all that the time is within 30 sec of the others?? I wonder what the time would be with the:3:72 gears?
I think you guys did a good job of trying to keep it fair. Its a hard test to do with traffic and everything too. I would only make the suggestion that you should of put the transmission in "M" so it wouldnt upshift to third and bog it down. IT would be awesome to see the GM and Ford 6.2 go head to head and the ram will have an advantage because of the 8 speed, but that ecoboost is impressive. I just like the sound of the 6.2!
Gotta love those Chevy trucks ! NO other for me !!!
I can't remember too many things that happened as a youngster, however the things I do remember are very dear to me, as it probably is for a lot of us humans ! One of the things I do remember is special ! Like my father N I driving through a country Rd. and I clearly remember my mom not being with us that beautiful morning on that beautyful country road with big, tall green trees, N greenery all around us ! This country road was, or is close to Eagle Pass Texas! However someone told me it's changed miserably ! Nevertheless, in my mind it's still as green N beautiful as I remember it to be ! Of course it's been 60 years ago !~OMG, I can't believe I just said that !~ N I had D window all to myself, riding shotgun with my dad, since my mom stayed home that time for some reason ! It was a very special ride for me that day, and I will never forget that beautiful brand new yellow 1955 Chevy truck ! It was D summer of 1955 N I was five years old ! My dad even made a stop on a roadside dirt outlet next to a big tree, N marveled at that work of art, that looked like a toy to me, with that bright yellow color, N the front of that truck looking like a pretty human face would look, with an expression of someone looking surprised, with an open mouth ! Many medium squares made it's grill as an open human mouth would look, and the headlights the eyes, that beautiful shiny yellow hood, engaging the wind shield, which was very modern at D time! A single windshield without D metal strip in D middle that divided the windshield into two halves, as they didn't yet know how to produce that big of a car glass just a couple of years before that, so it looked very modern at D time ! I can still see it in my mind this very moment in time, as I write this beautiful memory down, which I will never, ever forget ! To me? Those ol Chevy trucks are a work of art, time rarely forgets ! Also I'd like to add, all Chevy trucks R unforgettable to me ! Mine's a 1994 CHEVY SILVERADO 4X4 single cab reg. bed, it "Halls Ass", N laughs loud ! As a Chevy truck should !!!
Woohoo! I mussta realy been wanting to say something! HeHe~Na I just get sentimental with Chevy trucks! RIDEON !!!
Tnx ! Much appreciated!!!
+cruzncrow i grew up chevy, but as i aged my tastes changed so now im strictly gmc sierra for the refinement
It's all good, 'coz GMC is their Birthplate N mold of all! Coz as you mature to D trucks later on in life you're gonna have to pick N choose D one that's D mother of your needs! N I just happened to fit in a CHEVY SILVERADO 4x4 for my needs! Now if there's a need for other tngs like more tonnage or cargo N lift N D roads R tuffer? You're gonna need tuffer suspension N Train for pulling! Our beautiful CHEVY TRUCKS I feel R mostly for fast roads N lite to medium haul! However if it's more You need or want? You have to go to D ones you need! W/A heavier everything which R D other beauties N GMC's R it which is fine Coz. they're just as beautiful N kinfolk sisters anyway! Hehe!
Between the gearing and the extra set of valves, the Tundra sounded a lot more free to rev.
good video. they all did good. next do a diesel mash-up
Nobody has done ANY of these tests with a 6.2L F150 vs 6.2L Chev vs 5.7 Ram vs 5.7 Toyota all with 3.73rears(Dodge only has 3.55 and 3.90 so I guess 3.90 for them). THAT is what I want to see.
6.2 is the raptor. Suspension isn't really capable for towing
Wrong, the 6.2L was an option on 2011-2014 F150 XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Harley Davidson. With Super or Crew cab.
Yoda has 4.10
if the chevy had the 3.42s would it be rated to tow the MarkV? great videos guys
Yikes! I remember this from back in the day. They’ve come a long way. 🤪🙏☘️
I pulled a 8700lb trailer up that same road with my Ecoboost that had a 3.11 rear and 20" wheels with no issue at all. My RPMs were lower than the ones they had and it averaged 12 MPG. I could climb the hill at 65 MPH with the cruise control on.
Ethanol (E85)... I've watched all of these TFL videos, but rarely read the comments. Has anyone mentioned that the 5.3 Silverado makes quite a bit extra power on E85 fuel? The HP jumps to 380 and torque jumps to 416. I've towed a trailer full of ATVs up the Ike Gauntlet with my 2014 Sierra (only ~4,000lbs)... unfortunately I could not find any E85 in the area. With the altitude & thin air, the engine does not need the higher octane 100+, but I don't think the timing will advance without recognizing the high level of ethanol in the engine. Another point... I've noticed the trucks are always quiet in these videos (~70db). I live in Iowa & I noticed that when I drove my truck in Colorado at high altitude, the db is much less due to the thin air. Not a big point, but I've never heard that mentioned in these videos.
Just abaout as far as you can get from "real world" tests. Most smart drivers who are pulling will put the truck in Manual, and tow haul to minimize shifting and heat build up.
For a six-speed auto, the transition from 2nd to 3rd (or was it 3rd to 4th?) is really bad. The gap between the gears is too big. Is that because of the gear ratio or the axle ratio?
Nathan what kind of glasses are you wearing. i am looking for some new ones and they look nice. Off Topic:)
You need to do a test on all them trucks 20 year’s from now I bet only 1 will still be around, can anyone guess which one that’ll be?!
Does the amount of truck slapping these guys do at the beginning of the video bug anyone else??!!
I would like to see a big three V6 Comparo. I'm curious, as they are considerably more capable now. I mean, when you have time....... Which of course means you have no choice. You guys should also add a tiny grocery store parking lot test. None of them will do well, but it's all for the fun of it.
Id love to see that test with the 6.2 and 4.10's
Chev, Ford, and Dodge all failed the SAE J2807 towing standard. Don't beleive advertising b.s.
Love your videos with the touch of comedy.Which one is the straight man and who is the comedian?
In part one I would swear you said the Chevy had the 6.2?
I actually believe you are correct, I looked into and find it odd that the 3.73 isn't offered, but I'm sure there is a reason behind it and the 3.42 is probably a fine gear ratio for a test like this.
Hope you guys can get a proper setup to do a proper test run. I'd like to see a 3.73 Chevy Vs. Ram Hemi with the 8spd on the Ike Gauntlet.
every lane. my 07 silverado is the best truck ive ever owned. its fantastic. comfortable, fast, powerful, 19mpg, dependable.
why not the lincoln on the trailer ??
sick gold watch
Since you are not exceeding the speed limit there must be a minimum time in which the trip can be made. How fast have the trucks been as compared to the optimum time achievable? Enjoying the "gauntlet" series. I am curious to see how many trucks you can cajole the manufacturers into letting you test.
GM has always been better in my opinion and a lot of people too. Still put up a good fight for having less power. Team GM
Great tests! Keep up the good work!
All of these vehicles would have done well if properly equiped. They all towed well considering the altitude and grade. I don't believe that you can ask more from a truck unless you have a heavy duty or diesel.
Hey guys, I have an idea... Why not try doing a similar test with the gasoline engines in the heavy duty lines of these trucks? (of course you will have to exclude Toyota, but you can include Ram)
set up is everything i like a 373 limited slip
Okay redo the test with all three trucks pulling the boat. Hahaha.
I have the 2014 5.3 with the 3.42 rear axel ratio. Great fuel efficiency for a truck with plenty of power. I don't see why people hate on trucks they don't have or haven't even test driven. They just read articles and go with that. Love my truck but 3.08 is some baby crap.
Are thay 2014s?
chev just takes it cool man love them 5.3
5.3 with the max tow haul package would pull your car just fine. Also, haul button on the stalk is okay but use the manual setting it solves the gear hunting on steap grades. One, you can shift it while driving into manual no matter the speed or load. Two, you'll know what gear your in. Three, your engine breaking is much better down hill.
Why is the towing capacity so low on the chevy?
The Ford ecoboost was debut with doing a tractor truck pull. Do "F150 ecoboost tractor pull" on youtube. Now I haven't seen a 1/2 Chevy done any tractor pull in stock drive-train yet.
The towing limit of the truck is mostly depended on the frame/towing hitch setup. If you don't have enough HP, you just go slower. The 5.9 12V cummins rates for 215 HP, 440 lbft max and rated to tow more than 12k. The F150 Ecoboost is 365HP, 420lbft.
Isn't there a recall on silverados and sierras?
Ya there was. Something to do with the ignition
Couple things: A. my 2013 F-150 XLT Super Crew 2x4 with ecoboost, tow package, 3:55 lock rear diff, rated at 9800 lb. tow capacity. NOT a strip-out truck,Paid @ $36000 out the door. Makes CRAZY torque down at 1500 RPM and stays there. On regular gas. if you aren't pulling at LEAST 4000 lbs you forget its even towing a trailer.
B. The F-150 in the test was NOT a "Max-Tow" package. (Didnt have the F-250 mirrors).
C. IF the Chevy had a 3.73 rear end, it would still wheeze at altitude.
can someone please explain the point of Andre to me? I don't get it...
And why is the Ram 1500 missing??
I am curious to see how the new Ram 1500 diesel would do.
Gearing did have a HUGE play in this truck, that's why it struggled to hold 60MPH without revving 5K, the F150 had 3.73 and they said the Toyota had a 4.30 rear end. If the silverado had a 3.73 rear end it would be a much different result, but the EcoBoost did impress in this test.
Please load your F150 eco up next to my 2004 Chevy.
We think you are probably correct but never-the-less we can't exceed the manufactures specs. This would be unfair to the truck if it blew up because of our testing.
THUMBS UP to Mr. Truck!
doesnt chevy still have the 4.10 option for their trucks? i think that wouldve helped a little. or 3.73s. the 3.08 is for someone who doesnt really tow much
You guys should redo the test with the new tundra
In my opinion this truck actually got first place. The ford and toyota were not at there maximum towing capacity but despite this truck being at its maximum capacity, it pretty much tied the toyota. The chevy had less power less torque and a 3.08 diff. It had the 5.3 not the 6.2 so all and all this truck made the tundra and ford look bad.
agree
My parents dodge ram has 4:10s and it sucks at towing hahaha...so I know what you mean
This 2014 Chevy Silverado you tested needs a rear sway bar. There is a lot of sway in that truck while towing that boat. How come they don't put sway bars in most trucks is perplexing; especially since they tow and haul a lot of stuff.
Turbos are pretty cool. They have there uses.
standard gear for the 5.3 is a 3.08 with an optional 3.42.
You can get the towing package with the write axle ratio and the 6.2 v8 with 411 horsepower and 405 Tourqe
PLEEEAAASE do a run with the Lincoln under its own power :)
I did, we will see if this helps.
They are still better and the towing is still better. If you go to Fuelly, real world fuel economy averages for the Silverado are 19.1 mph, 17.1 for the Ram, 15.9 for the F-150, and 15.5 for the Tundra. I'd say that is a pretty huge difference compared to the competition and paired with better towing, that's a huge step up.
Can we do a new video with a proper chevy Thanks
how would you know??? I think HD's use forced induction as well...
witch one ran hot
sounds like my 97 Dodge 1/2 4x4 w/318. hey, getting the job done.
lmao thats funny. My 2001 360 is gutless...
You're looking to compare the towing workhorses of the major truck makers.
The ford 6.2 is found in the Raptor and top line trims of the F150. Its not the mainstream tow engine, the ecoboost is and it sells in the volumes to back that up. You'll have to compare the top selling tow engines for each brand. Ram-5.7 Hemi, Tundra-5.7, Ford-3.5 Eco, Gmc/Chevy-5.3L(The take rate is simply higher than the 6.2).
You can put them all up, but the advantage will be to the turbo.....
Seriously...why not just tow the 7000# Lincoln anyway? Test ruund :(
Disclaimer, I am a GM fan, so I am biased, but I am annoyed that GM did (us) the customers a major injustice with the 6.2 engine. The 5.3 has an 11 to 1 CR and the 6.2 has an 11.5 to 1 CR (larger cylinder volume with same cylinder head). Now, the 5.3 is E85 capable, but the 6.2 is not. This is very annoying because the 5.3 is "able" to run on 87 octane but the 6.2 is supposed to run on premium 91+... I assume this inability to run E85 is because the injectors are not able to handle the slightly higher volume of fuel while running E85. IF we were able to run E85 in the 6.2, the HP & Torque would still be much higher like 448HP & 495 Torque... I guess I can dream & wish the Engineers at GM would make life fun for the customer.
+Ruby Rider i doubt the 6.2 has the same cylinder head. if it did that would mean the stroke would have to increase 6.2/5.3 times, or about 10%... or about half an inch on a 4" stroke.
they have their own cool stuff on their beds. that stair on the ford is very cool and so are the movable hooks on the tundra, MIX THEM for Gods sake haha
that step is stupid. Just another moving part that will eventually break if constantly used.
yeah, i was thinking the same thing. but it is a unique feature i guess
Were is the new dodge ram with the new 8 speed trans an the 5.7 hemi maken almost 400 hp
Depends on the tire size, not the wheel size. 22" wheels weigh a ton more than 18's so that's more unsprung weight which slows it down even more just FYI.
Ford doesn't need commercials to sell their truck. The name it's self sells it.
Why do turbos suck?
My brothers silverado kicks ass it's a 1500 but it's got a 6.2 V8 and it has the rocky ridge conversion kit on it
Tundra Trd pro for life
This truck is a hauler. I'd really like to see this run done with a proper rear axle ratio.
They make a tune for the ecoboost which makes the 4 door 4wd under 5 seconds 0-60.
why would you put that in a truck eith 4x4 and a full sized truck?
just to clarify, im a ford fan and have a 2013 f150 with the max tow package and the f250 mirrors- the f150 tested is a limited with the 22" wheels which has the 3.73 gears. trust me that part is correct cause i also looked at one of those before i bought mine. Everyone can say the chevy will win but the ford is the only one with usable torque @2600rpm
I'd love to see that. I'm 100% Ford, but I'm afraid the Raptor would fall behind because of the big off-road tires. Bigger tires are the same as taller gears.
But, the Raptor does have the manual mode with the + & - button... (I assume other trucks do too)
I'd still love to see it. Good idea.
That new Z71 sure does look good. What truck should I get?
Not a ford.
the chevs interior is so ugly compared to fords
sledsrme it's not in person, and what good is a pretty interior when the truck breaks down at 90k miles? Traded my Ford for a z
