- ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Toyota Tundra Pickup is built to tow. But is it better than the Ram 1500 We decided to find out by putting both pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup Sequel. Once again both trucks tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Toyota Tundra up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
In fact according to Toyota this pickup can tow up to 9,600 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow around 7,200 pounds of old American Luxury car plus people and gear 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

In 10 years a 10 speed automatic transmission and twin turbos sound like a maintenance nightmare.
The Tech Librarian exactly.
@linny105 I watched the next episode. The Ram ate the Tundra. I went out and bought a new Ram all the way
I would rather take the 6 speed tundra for durability and lose out on mpg
Its like you knew it was coming
It's funny how the stop watch was started on the traffic sign on the left side of the on ramp on the Tundra. The Ford and Ram was start on the sign on the right side which is further down the on ramp. That makes it a real fair test...right. It does not matter which brand you drive, if you are happy with your truck thats all that matters. But make it a fair and proper reveiw and comparision. I love all trucks, I hate when companies lie and reviewers change things to throw a test. Consumers deserve fair and accurate reveiws and information. We don't care about opinions and comments because you like only one brand more than others. Talk to a mechanic who works on them and knows which one breaks down more and cost more to fix. He can give you a better reveiw them this video..
I have a 2011 ram I love its got 104,000 miles on it so far no problems at all just routine maintenance.. I like the tundras too though very strong good looking trucks for sure.
Tundra can go 100,000k miles with just oil changes. I'd like to see any other truck do that.
Ok, let me simplify. Tundra=Full on utility truck
Ram=Sport Truck
Yep
They're more reliable, but you can't do as much with them.
EpicNEd which is more reliable? toyota or ram...im a bit confused
Eha Kalama Asian cars are usually more reliable than American cars, at the expense of power. A tundra could never beat an f150 in a tug of war stock.
EpicNEd watch tug of war videos on youtube...youll be suprised
my 07 tundra has a hydrolic tail gate lowering dampener thingie too, he was wrong that only the new ones have it
That’s not what he said.
Thanks for the comment. This is way easier said than done.
Obviously the purpose of this video is to hate on the tundra because they don't feel it's American enough
William Todd 75% is made and assembled. Highest compared to big 3
Tundra actually the most American made truck in the USA all other trucks get their parts from China
Look at the resale values... Speaks volumes about just anything you can discuss regarding these two trucks. Those who care how they spend their hard earned money and do the research will choose the Toyota.
I heard ram went to the scrap yard after after this review
The design of the RAM is just stunning
From 2007,2008,2009,2010,2011,2012,2013,2014,2015,2016,2017,2018,2019,2020,2021
Same 5.7L 381hp 401ft lbs.... excellent powerhouse! I have a 2008 5.7 but I'm excited and patiently waiting for a bigger engine with more power or even 3/4-1 TON truck! Please no turbo V6's! Do not discontinue V8's in fact make a V10!
Tundra all the way
LOVE my 2014 Tundra FTW
I didn't see the "Tow Haul" light on the dash. Thats a MUST guys!
Dont understand why theres so much hate on the Tundra in the comments. Would rather the Tundra than a F150. Would last 3 times longer with very little maintenance
I'd rather stop faster than go faster. with that said, the Tundra has better brakes than the competition! even without "integrated brake controller".
The Tundra's 6-speed auto 1:1 "direct drive" gear is 4th, not 5th as stated in the video.

8 speed transmission, 1 speed for each transmission you're going to burn through on that Ram before you sell it
Spaghett lol true story.
Utterly shameless truck fanboys making BS claims about their brands.
The video seems to freeze @ 13:07 everytime I try and reload it again :( The Fast Lane Car
Direct drive is actually in 4th on the Tundra. 5th and 6th are BOTH overdrives. That's why the V6 model only has a 5-speed automatic. They essentially are the same transmissions with an additional overdrive gear in the 6-speed.
If you guys did any research or had half of a clue these videos might actually be informative. Roman- the oil gauge on the dash is oil pressure not temperature. And the tundras direct drive gear is 4th not 5th 5th gear is 0.728 and 6th is 0.588. Also for the love of god turn off your cell phones or put them in airplane mode while you are recording the video and then you wont get that annoying noise in your videos
i heard that also, oil temp.? lol
in 2009 dodge branched off to form Ram trucks. a separate manufacture to focus all its time and energy on pick-ups and become more commercial friendly.
I think André is a sleeper agent.
We know that now
This tundra has more trq and hp than most 3/4 ton gas trucks! This truck is amazing! I own a 2008 5.7L 2WD Crewmax! I'm very happy with it with over 125,000 miles!
Why are they so upset tundra does not have an integrated brake controller (IBC)?? Maybe some people don't tow.? Not sure about Dodge and Ford but the GM IBC's act up all the time and even if any codes are set like harmless emissions codes you suddenly loose ALL trailer braking- maybe on a long hill in the mountains? Also it can cause sway control to randomly kick in without a trailer in tow which can lead to loss of vehicle control. The fix? Disconnect the IBC and install a stand-alone brake controller. Check it out its crazy!!
Props to Toyota offering 4.30 ratios. I wish GM would offer something more than the 3.42s with the 5.3.
farmerallis you can get the RAM in a 3.21, 3.55, 3.92, 4.92
How come you test the uphill, but really both directions, without the cruise control. wouldn't that be the most accurate way to get mpg since you usually let the trucks make extra decisions like gearing and what not.
Went to the RV dealer with a neighbor in his Tundra, (nice truck too), who wanted to buy a 40' travel trailer/ toy hauler. When he asked about installing the 5th wheel, the service dept. guy laughed and said it would tow better with a dually Ford or Dodge due to the large mass. When he said "yeah but these things towed a space shuttle!" the RV guys laughed even harder! One of my trucks is a ten year old Ram 1500 Hemi Sport with about 150000 miles on it and it's been a good daily driver for years but just like my neighbor, I'd have to rethink pulling something that massive with a 1/2 ton single rear wheel vehicle. One must size the truck to the job at hand.
The Tundra has 4.30s while the Ram has the 8 speed and 3.92s, how is it power to the Tundra? 1st gear of the Tundra is 3.33 and the Ram has a 4.70 1st gear. Final drive of 1st gear is Tundra 14.32 vs Ram 18.42. Power to the Ram!
it's because the rear diff on the tundra is 4.6 giving it more power
the Asus pro Mac is a lie Its 4.30, but I understand you wouldn't know since you can't read anyway.
MrBlurberries at least you payed attention to detail unlike all the teen trash now a days
By your line of reasoning a Tundra outpulls a Volvo tractor with 600hp D16, since you can spec them with 2.43 rear ends.
Roy J Is that targeted at me? Surely not.
They are pointing to air temp to be the reason for the change in time, but when they tested the 2013 they actually let off just a bit at one point due to traffic (which would account for a few of the seconds being argued over). The issue with the eco-boost, even with its trailer braking being built in is the brakes were ~450 degrees. I'll give up the few seconds for the safer brakes.
I'd love to see Toyota give you a TRD supercharged Tundra and Tacoma to test. I really wonder how much of a difference a little boost would make.
Tundra gains over 500 HP
Juan Mora Might want to check that. Lol!
nope it its around 504 HP with the TRD supercharger
Juan Mora with a SC it goes from 381 hp to 504 hp, it gains 123 hp
Your wording was off. saying it gains over 500 HP lol
@2:42- I'm surprised that Hemi didn't leave oil all over the camera when he was dogging it.
I know, right..? It surprises me it didn't blow up.
Lol idiots
january 10, 2014 GM recalls 303,000 new chevy and gmc sierra pickups for engine fire risk. dont believe look it up! The only brand my family and i have ever owned is TOYOTA with little maintaince. I still have a 1991 toyota celica with 250,000 miles on it and have ONLY changed the brakes and battery only once! And its still going strong. My husband will be getting his second tundra next week! love the new interior.
Wow, thats great. I'm sure you've changed the headlight fluid though. I hear it doesn't last very long.
*****
You need to do your homework on that accelerator "problem", sandman. Even it it was a problem, Toyota never shied away from a recall like other government-backed manufacturer(s) have done for several years.
GM Is trash.
***** 0
And toyota replaced how many rusted frames?
Gm delivered the wrong 1 on purpose because they don't want to get embarrassed lol
Maybe the guy just didn't know, or forgot but the Nissan Titan has had that easy lowering tailgate for a long time.
The Tundra can only tow 9,600lbs? The new F-150 EcoBoost can tow 11,300lbs, the Ram and Silverado can also tow over 10,000lbs. Tundra is very far behind the big 3 in terms of fuel economy, power, and towing capacity. Maybe instead of making the 2014 Tundra look like an F-150 with a Toyota badge, they should have upgraded the old '07 powertrain.
To be fair, Toyota uses a different standard that GM, Ford, and Chrysler have not yet adopted.
It's like saying the domestics overrate their trucks while The Japanese underrate.
SilverRaven1959
What did I do? :)
Tundra is behind in power?!? At around 380HP/400lbft torque they are behind? That is what that truck has had since 2007, a 7 year old engine and the other three are just now catching it in terms of power/torque. Toyota figures their tow rating based on the SAE, the others don't. Also it is all how you configure the truck will determine your final payload and tow capacity...not all F 150 Ecoboosts are rated at 11,300lbs.
Try reading or listening to the beginning... This is how THIS Tundra is configured for towing
I agree. The Ram is without a doubt the best looking pickup on the market.
toyota should build heavy duty truck solid axle just like hilux from old days
It seems like you guys are Toyota Tundra haters. Can you explain why the Tundra is the only truck to pass the J2807 towing test? Every other truck fails badly. The F-150 eco boost even went into limp mode during the test.
This is probably the best video series of pickup truck towing test I have seen yet. My only suggestion for the next time you test these kinds of trucks again would be to increase your towing weight by around 1000 pounds so that there is more difference in the results.
sometimes comparing trucks for their strength isnt all, the real thing i car about is which one will stick with me for years to come without any problems, owned a ram and 75000 miles into the truck the transmission blows. Purchased a new 2007 tundra and had it ever since, just now its pushing the 70000 mile marker with no problems, and i even have replacement on the transmission for life so im set ;)
+john j Funny, my best friend has had his Tundra in the shop so much from leaking valve covers to broken rear window, right rear brake caliper issues. Traded it in for a 2014 Ram 2500 Megacab. Hasn't looked back. Not even in the same league he says. Ram for the win. And.. he is Asian! To get him from Toyota - LOL
gol10dr45 doesnt really matter of the problem, thats one car out of millions that have been built, not all will be the same. it also depends how well the engine was preserved, the car could lok good but have a horriable taken care of engine. Just saying that when ever i look to the side of the highway i always see american trucks broken down, never have i seen a tundra unless its a older model. More about reliability that the brand, blinded by consumerism dude.
+john j here in Arizona, a truck state, American trucks are doing the hauling, i know people who transport coast to coast and have near 700k miles on their trucks. you just don't see that type of work hauling from imports. it's a personal choice really. I work on cars on the side, don't like the import fool you.
gol10dr45 look you stick with yours ill stick with mine, like it has always been Japanese/ Chinese has been always proven more reliable rather its vehicles or technology
+gol10dr45 hilarious because tundras are made in Texas and your silly ram is imported from Mexico...
The car manufacturers' websites show gallery pics of exterior and interior shots. If you want to see images of the trucks, go there. Just a thought.
But you have to take in mind that Mr. Truck is a Ford guy. He says so in the 2015 Ford F-450 release video I believe. Roman and Nathan are more blunt and show no sign of bias in ANY of there car/truck videos. I would like to see either Roman or Nathan drive the Ford up Ike Gauntlet, preferably Roman IMO.
I’m a proud owner of a Toyota Tundra. So I have to be loyal and stick with the Tundra.
Yep. i'd say the ecoboost is competitive with the bigger, optional motors on the other guys. And definitely better at high altitude.
Well I asked a question and no one answered my question so I made a decision. I went with the Tundra instead of Ford, Dodge, Nissan, Chevy for the following reasons. Dependability,Longevity and resale value plus made in America. Toyota Tundra 4x4 crewmax.
khronosfateless Yeehaw. How does it feel while your driving down the road?
You guys should get supercharge tundra and then do the towing test
Thanks for the comment. It takes a lot of time and manpower to edit these episodes as we use 5 cameras. Sorry but we can't just put it together overnight. FYI: The Ram Ike Gauntlet video will be posted on Thursday.
Carguychris is right on. '04 Titan pioneered the assisted tailgate. As well as locking in-bed storage, in-bed lighting, moveable tie-downs... But it's the Rodney Dangerfield of half tons. No respect...
I found it funny when you guys ran the 2013 Tundra and mentioned how when loaded with a trailer it throws the headlights off and now in this episode you talk about the 2014 having self adjusting lights like its a new concept...well sorry guys but the tundra has had the self adjusting headlights for years.
Also why are we timing these up the hill? If you maintain 60 mph for 8 miles its going to take you 8 minutes. Kind of a lame test with too many variables from driver to traffic.
I wish someone would comment on that the regular cab 8' box, double Cab 6'5" box and crewmax 5'5" box Tundra all have the same wheelbase. So if you want the longer 6'5" bed you get a super short ugly cab. But if you want a full cab you get a short bed.
The ram got better MPG than the tundra
i just got my 2015 tundra limited and i thing that is the best truck then make ever no comparation the best truck on the market right now
morm110575 It's a good truck, but it's definitely not as good as the big 3, "Silverado, Ram, and F series".
morm110575 i agree 100%, my tundra has been far more reliable than all my domestics, it's a beast
Japanese make all the best shit and I don't understand why.
anomaly19851 would you like me to explain?
guy proulx Sure, how do they manage to make better shit than everyone else? Porn, electronics, weird ass food, anime, robohumanoids ect.
The temperature looks to be taken in Celcius not Farenheit. 301 degrees C = 573 degrees Farenheit for the front and 262 degrees C = 503 degrees F for rear
I love how Andre speaks perfect English now...
Not sure if trolling or incredibly stupid. Most of these trucks are made in Texas.
The Ram looks amazing! Definitely the best looking truck in the segment.
Steve Merkel what would I b wrong about? U sent me a link the first sentence is the Chrysler building head quarters is in Michigan and is owned by fiat.
branching into its own brand was one of Chrysler groups best decisions since the bail out. not to mention the tremendous marketing strategy.
They are meant to tow if they're equipped right. Some people need more than a midsize truck but less than an HD.
What's funny is no matter the winner or loser, the Tundra is still going in 2018 and the Ram probably fell apart a year after
Yeah ok you sound hella stupid
The "better" truck may be the Ram....but 100 times out of 100 my money would be spent on the Toyota...
Same, would you rather have a 2008 tundra or a 2008 ram
3:26 WRONG.....Nissan Titan had a self lowering tale gate when it came out. I have an "05 Titan and it still lowers slowly without slamming down. It opens just like in this video.
I'd be interested to see you guys do a quick payload breakdown. Trucks are rated to tow a ton these days, but payloads are going down for ride quality. With ~700lbs of people and 15% of that trailer as tongue weight, you're probably over the advertised payload (and GVWR) of 1410lbs by 3-400lbs.
Direct drive is in FOURTH gear on the Tundra, not fifth.
Where is episode 5 already! Should have posted both together. What's the hold up?
To get a better idea of what kind of mpg's you're getting on the climb, you should reset the average fuel economy counter at the base of the hill, that way you're measuring the climb only. Going down the hill, if the truck has the fuel cutoff technology for coasting, it won't use any fuel at all. I bet for this Tundra climbing the hill, you'd be looking at 2 mpg's or around there.
I got an '05 Dodge Ram 1500 but it's not 4x4. Should I have any problem towing a jet ski n trailer in and out of a lake? Sorry truck noob here lol
I'm a Chevy guy and would prefer the Silverado, but all these trucks would be a great choice. They seem to be pretty much the same power wise, and they all look good!
I like the channel guys but , why don't you guys finish the episode and do both trucks ? That irks me
Oh yeah, and tiny 17" wheels on the Toy, and 20's on the Ram. So what exactly is the effective gear ratio of each truck>>??
chevy hasnt changed their styling much since 1999. split head lights, alot of body panels look pretty much the same. they have changed the interiors around a little and changed the head/tail lights. look at an f150 from 1999 and compare it to now... its just a face lift. i hope gm gets the guts to do a whole new design on their truck.. id be very interested to see what they can do with a pick up. seeing as they are redesigning all their cars..
Wow, not a cloud in the sky, beautiful!
Lots of farmers use Tundras in Texas. They are work horses and reliable.
Tundra direct drive is 4th gear not 5th. Look it up
These trucks aren't set to a equal test. The Tundra is the Crewmax version, which is way bigger than the Dodge. Tundra should've been the Double Cab which is equal to the Dodge and also has a 6.5 foot bed. Notice how "Mr. Truck" says they both have a 5.5 foot bed and says both are Crew cabs. Not true
I realize you didn't push the EcoBoost as hard as you could have because it would throw off the fuel economy data, but I would love to see what time you could have achieved with it. Please retest it with the pedal to the floor! :)
exactly. I have never seen a farmer using a tundra. Sure the tundra can pull a spaceship, but try hauling loaded grain wagons out of a soft field or pulling a couple loads of hay from the field to the barn. I'd put my old 98 chevy 1500 with a 5.7 up against any new tundra here on the farm.
Like thats something to be proud of? The other trucks have been doing that since the 80's, time to get with it.
thanks for taking the time to record your experiment!
Another fair comparison.
Toyota Tundra with 4.30 gears vs. Dodge Ram with 3.92 gears. Way to go, Chrysler! Start giving towing customers what they want and throw at least some 4.10's in there! Even Ford has 4.30's available (I think)! 4.56's wouldn't even hurt gas mileage, unless you're going 85+ all the time!
but you also need to consdier the time it takes the turbos to spool, the 5.3 is going to make a better power band since its natural aspiration. the 5.3 would be a hell of a lot better in a long haul considering when turbos get to hot they like to blow up, or cease up, and the 5.3 will just last longer towing hard, sure it doesn't make as much power as the eco boost, but id rather have the 5.3 for towing
I like the looks of the ram alot better
Wouldn't it be a lot safer for your Russian mechanic to be doing those temperature tests on the right side of the truck...the side that isn't so close to traffic?
Is soviet Russia traffic adjust for you.
TFL when are you going to test the RAM Eco diesel on the Ike Gauntlet?
You go by the capabilities of the truck, not like for like on gear ratios. A 3.55 ratio Ecoboost is rated to tow 1,000 lbs more then a 3.55 Hemi. That is why you have to go by capabilities which is how people that tow shop for trucks anyways. If they need to tow 9k lbs then they shop all the trucks that are rated to tow 9k lbs regardless of rear gear. If a truck can't do what the truck maker says it can then they need to change it's tow rating to move it out of the 9,000lb class tow rating.
tundra does have an integrated brake controller, harness is in the glove box.
phatrides222000 That is what that cord is, I had no idea why I had a blank cord in there.
6824096 its too plug in a brake controller. Kinda like installing an aftermarket stereo.
+phatrides222000 If it were integrated you wouldn't have to plug it in the glove box. It would be "integrated" into the dash.
Av8tor952 it installs like an aftermarket stereo. the truck is pre wired. just allows for any brand, but i see what you are saying.
Reliable Tundra for me.
It would be awesome if you guys could get your hands on a trd supercharged tundra and run this test.. I'm sure it would put up an impressive time.. The Fast Lane Truck
of course they both want the ram!! :)
Yeah cuz its a better truck
The Titan has had a tailgate shock since 2004.
Thanks for pointing out the head light adjuster on the Tundra, but damn Toyota still needs to put a brake control.
Actually, Nissans Titan had the very first damped tailgate.
possibly the cause of the better tundra performance between the 13 and the 14 is a better air intake maybe not the only reason but maybe part of it
You should have a chart displaying times (And amount of weight towed, since the Cummins Dodge towed much more than the Silverado 1500 etc etc)
Great video guys. I have recently purchased the 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew 4x4 with the 3.92 gear. During your braking session, you guys retested because you forgot to set the trailer brake gain, however, after adjusting the temps were about the same.
In the settings on the 8.4" touch screen, you have the option to set the intensity of the trailer brake, whether light electric over hydrolic or light electric or heavy electric, etc.
I am wondering if any of these changes were made prior to towing or if you were going strictly off the trailer brake controller.
Perhaps a different outcome with a little hotter trailer brakes if not, but with that said, it shows the Dodge can handle a heavy load, on a steep downgrade all on its own.
Ram pulls great a have one of those before the went to the hockey puck shifter I completely dislike. Next truck will be the tundra
Air density definitely makes a difference, but don't forget about the 4.3 gear ratio keeping those rpms up. Great video. Keep it up!
