I like watching TFL tow at max truck ratings, as these really show what the trucks are made of. Awesome truck, but $77K is so steep for a 1/2 ton pickup.
With that quality of interior they have to charge. The Ram Longhorn and Limited are the only trucks comparable.
No way for a new developed pickup truck with a 6 cylinder they put that same six cylinder on the LS 500 and they still have major recalls and problems with that engine and it's been in that car tested since 2015 and they haven't got it right what does that tell you turbos do not work for long long time
Get used to it! The Heavy Duty trucks are approaching the $100,000 mark fully loaded.
@@scottmendoza8989 just cause it was in a different vehicle doesn’t mean it’s gonna be the same. Even tho it’s the same power train, there’s still changes they have to make and tweak it and make it function into a big pick up truck and have capability the way it does. The engine itself is one thing but everything else that makes it turn is not the same. You are comparing a small car to a full size pickup truck. A lot more strain and stress on a pickup and it’s not apples to apples. A lot of vehicles have little issues here and there first year, even the most reliable legendary Toyotas also had a few issues here and there in the beginning but what Toyota does best is tweak it little by little till it’s perfect and I’m sure they will figure it out and the tundra will be reliable. Time will tell though.
77k is especially alot for a truck that looks so awful in my opinion. Looks like a solid truck but everytime I see one I just cant help but think how bad the front end looks.

yes but they dont tow the same weight and configuration so the results dont mean much..a little odd that they dont unless they want to skew the results and toyotas hybrid battery warranty sucks i got rid of my prius under warranty as the batteries were failing and they were not failing bad enough..ill wait for solid state batteries..their warranty is terrible
I'm sad to say that in an apples to apples test, this hybrid Tundra isn't very impressive compared to competition in real-life towing. The hype and excitement is there in the media, but the real-life numbers are par at best when all is on a standardized test, and other auto-journalists have proven it. I'm a Toyota fanboy myself, so it hurts me worse than most to admit this. If they introduce a hybrid that has lithium batteries that can plug in and commute/run errands in EV mode and then tow and go the distance in hybrid mode, like a Rav4 Prime, then they'd be in a league of their own for the win. But too many buyers want the interior tech/bloat/luxury and not the actual function and true performance gains, so this is what we get.
@@lutomson3496 Toyota Prius owners report quite the opposite though. Toyota treats their Prius warranty claims better than any other model due to image concerns. Plus the batteries have a very good reputation if you get the lithium models. If you tell your story to Toyota they'll be quick to resolve your problem so as not to get comments like yours, because they are trying hard to be a leader with the Prius.

It's great to finally see a towing video with the hybrid Tundra. I have a 22' Limited, and it tows my 19' NOBO like a dream. Immediately after breaking it in, I took a family vaca to Glacier, from Eastern WA, and I was impressed.

@@adamsmiths3016 - Toyota makes awesome vehicles, these are still amazing trucks! The only issue I see is longevity, turbo’s produce more revs and heat which shorten engine life.

I think this truck is a good starting base for the new Tundra platform. I'm hoping they do some tweaking to it over time to get it better fuel mileage and maybe higher power export figures. But overall this truck seems to be a big upgrade over a previous gen Tundra and provided Toyota has in fact fixed the waste gate problem on the early manufactured ones and this has good reliability I think it will be a great truck option for many.

We’ve got a 2011 Silverado 6.2L that the wife uses to pull her horses to shows anywhere from 10 to 500 miles away. Total weight of trailer and horses is about 7k lbs. Since the Silverado is > 11 years old and the miles are starting to get up there, I’ve been thinking of replacing it with a new truck. The Tundra Hybrid looks like it brings a LOT of updates to the equation including larger fuel capacity (32 vs 26 gallons), lower octane fuel requirements (regular vs premium), higher load and towing capacity, and a better ride/environment. In addition, with the air suspension, you can inflate and balance a heavier towing load or deflate and enjoy a nice ride with no load. I’m thinking that in addition to pulling the horses, this would be a nice road trip vehicle with good comfort & range. This might just be the one we need. Re-test this same tow test with the Tundra hybrid actually in tow-haul or tow-haul + mode. The Tundra was never in any tow haul mode going up hill only down hill I’m sure there would be a huge difference with it actually on come on TFL make sure these test are done right and equally all the way around before comparing apples to apples thanks and keep up the great work.
I would love to see a chart with every truck's results in the Ike. Historical and current. Especially mpg.

Would be interesting if you re-did the Ike with the same weight that you towed behind the non-hybrid to see if apples to apples, the hybrid powertrain actually gets better MPG or not💪
Why would it get better MPG? The hybrid wasnt active except for the first 5 seconds when they accelerated from 35 to 60mph. Even then it abruptly shut off at 50 mph and the engine had to get it from 50 to 60mph by itself.
If anything, the extra 500 lbs of battery and electrical components makes it worse.
Per Toyota Engineering: The Hybrid driveline is not designed for better mileage. It is designed for more power.

I've always loved Tundra's and I think Toyota did a great job with the redesign and hybrid option. Completely agree with the TFL guys though, with the F150 Powerboost, Ford has Toyota beat on power export. Having a giant portable inverter is huge.
Welcome back Mr. Truck !!!! These towing tests are awesome; however, in the different conditions it is hard to compare between tests. It was 55F for this test. How would this truck have performed if it were much warmer or if the air was less dense as it was in other truck tests? Would the oil temperature stayed within limits?

Great video , Andre/Mr.Truck, your routine was rushed in this video , not the normal, its all good and nice to see you 2 back together, the Tundra Capstone is just that a well finished product inside and out,68 decibels at 60 mph @4000 rpms is good, my car cruising on the highway at the same speed @2850 rpms with nothing on is at 74 decibels and i thought that was good , the Tundra performed well in this towing test , $77,000 is not any different than any of the big 3 , they are in the same ball park, i agree with Andre that the pro power on board in the Ford hybrid system is a sweet thing to have in case of an outage and you do not have to buy the most expensive model to get it, that's a bit of a leg up for Ford, it would be a hard toss up between the Ford and Tundra for me , time will tell 👍

Leave the heavy towing to domestic turbo diesel trucks. If you use that Tundra like I use my GMC 2500 HD it simply won’t hold up to the abuse. Brakes, frame, suspension not heavy enough in a Tundra. The Rental dealer I I frequent won’t allow customers to pull skid steers on a trailer with a Tundra or most any other half ton trucks.Said too much liability. Said a customer insisted his Tundra was enough truck to tow 12K lbs, after hooking up trailer rear end was excessively pushed to the ground. Would not allow customer to drive away, ended up delivering with there F-350. Don’t kid yourself with these half ton trucks.
If you use a half ton like a heavy duty then it won't hold up!?!?! Wow who would've thought! Its almost like it's the same for every other half ton

Toyota tested the Tundra Hybrid throughout my state of West Virginia for that very reason (hills and sharp curves everywhere) before almost any information was released about this current generation, and that's where some of the image leaks in the media came from. I'm not sure if the "leaks" were on purpose or not.

The thing about Toyota is people think they are behind. What they do is perfect what they can bring before a release. It's the safest way to keep reliability and keep customers coming back with no problems.
Truck prices are insane now. My Silverado in 2014 was 42k. A friend just paid 44k for his Tacoma (off road) 2 weeks ago. Most silverados in comparable trim to mine are now 55k. Insanity.

Right! The fully loaded 2021 platinum and 1794 with 4wd could both be had for 53k, now the SR5 with cloth seats costs that much or more! Seems now a luxury truck makes more of a statement than a luxury vehucle like a Mercedes or BMW!
Leases are insane as well. I was up at the dealership on Wednesday because the lease is up on my car in 3 months and can turn it in early. I currently pay $485/month for my vehicle. The same vehicle, only 3 years newer, but had a $2100 LOWER window sticker price than my current vehicle is $713/month….

So glad to see this test. I plan on buying Tundra and one thing I need it to do is tow my 10,000 lbs boat/trailer roughly 90 miles twice a year. Mostly flat highways....this gives me confidence in the truck.

People are just straight hating on the v6 tt. For reliability who knows, time will tell. As for the interior and exterior, it’ll grow on you. I have 1794 hv. People say it’s having problems, yes it’s a first year issue, ford, dodge and Chevy still have transmission and lifter issues and they have been in the market for years.

Looking forward to tests with the 2023 Sequoia hybrid. I have a family of 6 and a 32' travel trailer. I think it shares this powertrain, so even this test was encouraging.

If Toyota added a system like Ford's Power Onboard it would be a perfect truck. I use mine almost daily at jobsites. I used to use a generator and now there's no need for one.
It's honestly disappointing they didn't have that. Toyota's hybrid minivan has a 1.5kW system, yet they only give their full-size hybrid truck 400W? They definitely made a few bad decisions designing this truck.
@Jean Toronto Raptors Being disappointed is an opinion. I'm not allowed to be disappointed that their truck doesn't have as much power available as their minivan? Toyota clearly has the capability to implement it, especially on a truck this expensive. This hybrid Tundra has an electrical system that the engineers did not fully utilize in order to compete with the only other current hybrid truck, the F150, so of course it's going to be directly compared.
Ram, GM, and Nissan 1/2 ton trucks all have 400W outlets available, same as this hybrid truck, which has far greater electrical generation capabilities. They phoned it in when designing features on this truck.

Would be nice if you added the following talking points/analysis.
1. Payload
2. Confidence and Frequency you'd perform a max tow with the truck vs. deciding that upgrading to a more capable vehicle (HD or 2500) is the better choice.
I’d venture to say they were over payload on this one….I’ve shopped the new Tundra, the lack of payload capacity is what turned me away. The SR5 that I looked at had just over 1200 payload…

Seems every commercial I see with the new tundra towing, it always looks like the rear end is squatting. I don’t think that’s a desirable trait in a tow vehicle. I’m sure the slightly softer suspension gives it a better ride but I’d rather have a stiffer ride and not feel like the truck was being overloaded.
@@MC_015I doubt they were over payload (they seem to be aware of those things), but you know they were flirting with it seeing they were using a weight distribution hitch.

Andre the only time you had it in any type of tow-haul mode was when you was going down the mountain testing the engine braking. The new Tundra and older version always displays whatever mode you choose on the dash it doesn’t stop illuminating unless you turn it off or don’t have it on from the get go it will shut off if you turn the vehicle off. Let’s see how the Tundras rpm’s and transmission performs with tow-haul plus mode actually on towing 10,000 lbs up the Super Ike Gauntlet and when you floor it from 35 to 60mph. They equip the Tundra with the new tow-haul plus feature for a reason it’s only fair to use it during these test no reason to judge or discredit the Tundra in comparison to the competition unless all tow features are on and the test are truly compared equally to whatever the competition may be. When you do the decibel test ask Toyota is there a way to turn the speakers off from making the fake V8 engine noise that way you get a accurate measurement. Love your videos keep up the great work glad somebody decided to do what you do that way people know what they are truly getting before they buy a truck.
I'm still in awe that people pay for both a muffler and fake engine noise on the same truck. Never underestimate the power of stupidity.
Some really good half ton choices these days. IMO it comes down to which one you think looks best. All of them are plenty capable for the average user.

Payload is a big factor as well. The tundra has the least of the 4 main trucks. When looking at travel trailers this is a huge factor.

@@9663mu What's sad is that most buyers are looking for a living room with a microscopic bed behind it just to pretend that it's a manly "truck". How many of these trucks do you really think are going to haul firewood, dirt, or gravel? How many do you think are going to be models that can haul a piece of lumber and still close the tailgate without it sticking out? When I grew up, almost every truck had an 8 foot bed that was used multiple times per week to haul stuff that couldn't be hauled by a car or van. So what if you had two adults and two children? You didn't need a back seat; you put those two kids into the same middle seat belt or tossed them in the back with the cargo.

As always another great video, it's good to see Toyota finally stepped up there game & can now compete with the other 1/2 ton trucks on towing. That is a sharp & strong truck but I still had rather have the V8.
I don't know why they waited so long. I wish they incorporated some reliability into their testing. It's not even a competition when it comes to Toyota. American trucks can't even make it to 100k without thousands in repairs.
@@robodrop2392 I own a very large solar company and we tow or haul nearly every mile with half tons. We sell off our trucks between 135 & 150k on them. Currently half ford half ram. It’s usually less than 3 years of use but we very rarely have any problems with them. Maybe a handful of turbos on the fords and the ecodiesels like to have DEF errors but I can’t remember the last time we had a bug failure of any kind. ~ 135 trucks in the fleet currently
@@robodrop2392 I have an 08 F150 with 265,000 4.6 & 5 speed manual & the only thing I've ever had to do is replace the alternator, and it's a 100% work truck, bed stays full & has always had a trailer hooked to it. And that ford is just one of many that I have.

@@mattbrew11 you are illustrating the difference of fleet trucks which receive scheduled maintenance on fluids, filters and parts. Versus a pov which maynot be taken care of as dilligently.
Air suspension is great when they are new, but, once the lines get old and brittle it's just a pain in the (rear) chasing down the problems. I'm putting normal shocks on my older Navigator, there are several aftermarket kits for the 07-17 generation Expeditions and Navigators that replace the air suspension with normal struts.

IMHO, hybrids are the way to go, you get the best of both worlds. This can always be improved on, I have great suggestions that haven't been thought of yet. My ideas are for sale btw. That price is actually very affordable.
Agreed, the limited range on the EV’s when towing is scary. The F-150 lightning going from a 330 mile range to under 100 miles range when towing is atrocious. Imagine having to stop every 1.5 hrs, recharge for an hour, on a 500+ mile trip. 2.5hrs for every 100 miles…yikes
Plug-in hybrid or why bother?
Hybrids along with electric vehicles emit radiation. They are AC currents not DC. If you drive by yourself and dont take long drives all the time its not to big of a deal as the batteries are usually in the back seat. But if you do drive a lot and have you kids that ride with you, then sorry u cant in good conscience subject my kids to that.
@@gfgneo I’m no fan of EV’s but you’re just wrong here. The energy coming into the car(the charge is AC) but the car stores and emits DC power. This is exactly how your home works. AC is delivered to the home. As far as the radiation, or EMF, EV’s emit less than 20% of what’s considered a dangerous level. For reference, a standard, non EV still emits 10% of the dangerous level. Making both vehicles safe in that regard

Not sure if they've changed this, but my 2018 f150 also defaults to normal drive mode whenever you shut it off. I agree, if the trailer is still attached (the truck even tells me it still is) why wouldn't it just stay in tow/ haul?
My 21 stays in tow/haul til the trailer is disconnected. The other modes it asks you if you’d like to return to the previous mode when you start it up

8:50 the Tundra had turbo and battery boost. Then hybrid boost dropped to zero. Did the Tundra ever access hybrid boost again going up the Ike gauntlet?

I know you said on the temp gauges there’s no numerical indication, but for only an 8 mile stretch that oil temperature seemed a little closer to the red zone than I would like.
That’s one of the issues with any turbocharged engine, they run hotter, at higher rpm’s and that increases the wear and tear on the engine shortening it’s lifespan.
I pulled a 5000 lb rv trailer with a 3.0L diesel SUV around Colorado in mid August, and had to keep an eye on my temperature gauge. I did not drive the Ike, but sometimes I had to slow down, turn off the ac, etc. to help lower the coolant temperature. The fact that the Tundra can pull 10,000 lbs up a 7% grade to 11,000 ft for 8 minutes without needing to manage coolant temperature is really impressive! There is a reason why the grill on the Tundra is rather large.
It was only 59*F at the bottom of the climb and 52F at the top. No truck should have issues overheating in those conditions.
My 2014 F150 Ecoboost has cooling issues in the summer towing around Utah and Wyoming too, but anything below ~80F outside and its fine.

@@Jay-me7gw I have a 2012 VW Touareg with a Malone stage 1 tune. Last summer before the trip I also had a 3" lift and new lower front bumper with plates from Eurowise installed. I am suspecting that the new center plate may be decreasing my cooling ability. Temperatures were often 85F plus. I never had problems with enough power/torque to tow up any hill, even at 11,000 ft. Just cooling. May take it out next year when towing.

One thing I’ve been curious about with the new Tundra (hybrid or non-hybrid) is if using premium fuel vs 87 would result in an MPG difference. Some vehicles do, some don’t.
We used premium 91 octane for this test.
I would imagine it would, especially towing. The higher temps and high boost means it will need it
I use 87 because that what it says to use, runs better that way too IMHO.
@@DreX-8810 Do you have proof? have you logged ignition timing and put it on the dyno?
This engine has a compression ratio higher than the previous gen Tundra's V8 and runs nearly 15 psi of boost on top of that. It could probably run 100 octane and still not be at peak timing.

Toyota hit a home run with the truck. If i was in the market for a new truck, its the only 1/2 ton truck I'd look at besides the Ford Hybrid. The price tag is definitely up there, but I'm guessing it will hold its value well. Outstanding video and well done Toyota.
I think Toyota dropped the ball on this. The hybrid system is basically pointless. Toyota is the hybrid system pioneer. I expected a lot more from them. Especially in the MPG dept

Picking my 2022 F150 Lariat 502a full Hybrid tomorrow. I looked at Toyota Limited Hybrid, but it lacked so many important safety features and cheap quality plastic, leather and old style buttons, I just walked out if the dealership. Not to mention, my insurance premium went down by 22% per month for 2022 F150 because of Auto Pilot 2.0 and additional safety system. Ir has 7.2KW pro power, and it rides so well too and tows like a champ.
Cool. Still would rather have the V8 again. Yeah it has less output but it’s just simpler with less to go wrong, longer service life, and does about the same mpg wise when towing.
What this truck needs is an inline 6 diesel. That would be amazing!
25+ mpg in a pickup truck vs 16 mpg is always welcome, and that's what diesels commonly pull, but emissions regs do consumers dirty and prevent these great engines from hitting market.

@@qx4n9e1xp yeah it’s a shame. Diesel can run off used cooking oil, kerosene, etc. Diesel fuel is a byproduct of the gasoline. refining process. If only they’d come out with a cleaner diesel fuel then we wouldn’t have to put up with def and emissions equipment.

One comment on your tie-down job, be careful about placing straps across that bucket, I have done that before & the edge can cut the strap.

I was looking into the Tundra before I ended up with the F150 Powerboost ‘21. I’m glad I didn’t wait as the added pro power makes way more sense for the hybrid setup. It tows great even if the engine gets thirsty towing in the hills; around town it gets 14-18mpg depending on the trailer type and load. I would just have a V8 if I didn’t use the pro power as much as I do. I wish these companies experimented with a diesel hybrid system.
