2023 Chevy Silverado 2.7 vs 5.3 Towing Test! | Does the 4 Cylinder Keep Up?

  • In this video we take the 2023 Chevy Silverado 2.7 and 5.3 V8 and tow a roughly 6,700 lbs trailer around the same loop. Both of these trucks have within a 200 lbs towing rating of each other despite having very different powertrains. Does one accelerate quicker than the other? Not really. The similarities of this experience was surprising to me as I thought there might be a larger difference. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

      In your case a smaller truck would be more than sufficient, a Colorado would do all that easily. It’s been rumored that the 2.7 turbo 4 will end up in the Colorado, I can imagine that engine will feel like a rocket in a smaller truck.

  • @pookatim
    @pookatim Před rokem +136

    If you watch the tachometer during the acceleration test, you will notice the 2.7L actually "redline" while the 5.3L does not. The simple fact of the matter is while it is possible to wring a lot of power from a small engine, it is going to be under a lot more stress than a larger engine.

    • @troyg3439
      @troyg3439 Před rokem +36

      As the video stated the 5.3L felt sluggish and he incorrectly attributed this to the transmission. Reality is it's the torque RPM of the 5.3l vs the 2.7T. 5.3L torque peak is 383torque@4000rpm. 2.7T has 350 torque by 1500rpm and peaks at 430torque@3000rpm.
      To do actual work with a 5.3L, it will be turning much higher rpm regularly. So in that sense it will be working just as hard if not harder to do the same work as the 2.7T.
      Don't forget the 2.7T get 3mpg better average than the 5.3L, the 5.3L also being a $2000 option so you spend more to get that engine. I prefer the extra 75 miles range per tank and also still having the ability to tow the same load as a v8.

    • @CarsMadeSimple
      @CarsMadeSimple  Před rokem +7

      I did not attribute the 5.3 being sluggish due directly due to the transmission. I praised the 10 speed several times. The throttle sensitivity was my biggest complaint with the 5.3 truck. The truck felt like it should have downshifted upon less throttle or just given more throttle (with less pedal travel) in the current gear. Also the 5.3 costs $3,095 more than the 2.7 in most (if not all) configurations.

      @@CarsMadeSimple the 5.3l is a $2000 option in work truck trim. I guess i incorrectly assumed gm wasn't going to charge more in other trims. Is the difference in price US vs Canadian dollars?

    • @CarsMadeSimple
      @CarsMadeSimple  Před rokem +2

      @@troyg3439 I just doubled checked and the price difference applies to W/T trims also. It actually may have gone up since I made this video as the difference came out to be $3,490 for the W/T Crew Cab I built. The difference comes from about $2,000 in extra cost for the 5.3 and GM gives you a $1,500 "package discount" on the back end which totals over $3,000 savings. You can build them on the website and see what I am referring to.

      @@CarsMadeSimple I think that 2.7 would have gotten better mileage with the stock smaller rims. Plus it would have pulled even harder. Big rims rob power and fuel. Probably would have rode better too on stock. What was stock, 17"?
      Is it true 2022 and newer 5.3 don't have the cylinder deactivation? I've read that it's really not fool proof to delete it using a scan tool. Plus, I think GM can access live connect can't they and turn it back to stock on a whim. The days of simple and honest are all a distant memory now unfortunately. I know not everyone discovers this yet though.
      I have a feeling that 8 speed is purposely made to exploit the very high torque that 2.7 has at 1500+ revs. Doesn't make it a good tranny tho. You'd think it wouldn't have shifted so poorly. Personally I'd even prefer a 6 or 7 speed on turbos, as long as they're a good trans. Is the 10 sp the same unit Ford uses too I've heard?
      I meant to say..if driven gently, I'll bet the 2.7 would easily beat whatever the EPA says, city or highway. The problem though is it's hard not to use the power and torque if it's there begging to be urged, and all turbos have huge fuel lines and pumping capacity with any heavy foot.
      Someone mentioned towing a travel trailer with high wind resistance would be a better test. And that's true, especially if driven over 55 very often. There's a guy that tows a 32 or 35' travel trailer and he gets amazing mileage but I think he keeps it under 60. Says he always launches gently. If he's heavy on the throttle says the economy can disappear but treat it decent and rewards much better than previous V8.

    Both solid trucks! Great video. I would say you’re probably feelin a suspension difference because the LTZ may have been packaged with a different suspension. It is above the LT and comes stock with “better” suspension. Not 100 on that though.
    The power difference you’re feeling is the axel ratio. That LTZ is has a 3.23… hehe not ideal for towing. The 3.42 will always out-perform the 3.23 towing.
    Personally I bought a 4x2 because I’m gonna make towing a constant, i have no need to off-road. My 5.3 is pretty sensitive on the throttle without the extra weight of the transfer case, or maybe it gears different because there is no transfer case, I don’t know… it feels just as responsive as the 2.7 I test drove though.

      Thanks! They both had the standard option for their trims levels in terms of suspension so that is why I assumed they would be pretty close but it could be different. I agree that the 3.42 is the better of the two for towing and moving up to the 3.73 would likely help even more. That's good that your feels more responsive. I test drove chevy's (actually test drove every half ton except the tundra, and all three 3/4 tons) with both the 5.3 and 2.7. The 2.7 definitely felt peppier than the 5.3, hands down. 2.7 will need some time before the public gains confidence in it especially since the mpg are not that much different between it and the 5.3. It may have made more sense to put it in the Colorado/Canyon and perhaps some of their SUVs like the Acadia and Tahoe back in 2020. It's too bad GM didn't take their 4.3 V6 and turn it into a turbo. That engine has a long track record and would have been more readily accepted by the truck buying public. I drive a 2010 Sierra with the 5.3 and 6 speed and have had zero problems over the 100 000 miles I've driven with it.

      I agree. It will take time to for everyone to get used to this base engine option that just so happens to have more torque than the 5.3. Despite the downfalls, I still believe it is a great upgrade (or base engine) over the 4.3 which was just a little low on power and didn't get great fuel economy either. Hopefully the revised 8 speed goes into the Silverado after the Colorado/Canyon as it can use all the help it can get.

      No half ton should be towing over 7k lbs regularly. It’s just too much stress over time especially if you’re towing in the mountains. That’s where a diesel comes into view where it makes its maximum torque at less than 2k rpm. You can tow heavy and the engine isn’t working nearly as hard as gas engines.

      - On country roads with few stop signs I average 24-26mpg at 55mph
      - Short city drives vary based on how hot the engine gets. A short 2-3 miler is about 10-14mpg, a 5+miler is between 16-21mpg.

    This is not meant as a mean spirited comment but simply my experiences. Having towed RV's for 45+ years; my bet is if you were towing a travel trailer you would be very close & more likely over the hitch cap & maybe the carrying cap as well for those trucks. My 27' trailer is appx. 7200# wet with a tongue wt of ~1100#. Add a few hundred #'s for gear in the bed or cab + 2-4 passengers and you are soon at or above the carrying cap of most 1/2t pickups. It's not the tow rating but the carrying cap that'll get you. I towed this rig with a 1/2t for 5 years but moved up to a 1T. Day & night differences. My 1/2t was a Heavy Tow 3.5l ECO. Plenty of power, just too close on the carrying cap. Turbo's create torque. It towed better than my 1/2t, 5L v-8. Turbo had 3.23 rear & the V8 had 3.73. I agree with your summation on the trottle response differences.

      Thanks for the comment. I was referring to smaller trailers such as single axle's and smaller double axle travel trailers up to around 24' or so. Looking online it looks like these trailers vary a lot but many are well under 7,000 lbs wet.

    • @herb7877
      @herb7877 Před rokem

      @@CarsMadeSimple yes, I caught that, but even at 24’ you may be bumping up against max carrying capacity. My rule of thumb as well as many seasoned rv trailer people is to come in at around 80% of capacity. In a majority of time with rv’s you’ll hit max weight carrying cap way before max towing. A flatbed trailer with sand or water will have a much lower profile and most likely not have the same issue’s. Travel trailers also have a lot of real estate up in the air and will find a lot of wind resistance. Side winds will create other issues as well.. although a lot do it 1/2t trucks should limit towing of rv’s to the very small size. Do your test now with a tt or the water tank with a 3/4t or 1t and you’ll see what I mean. Day & night difference. Plain old physics.

    • @CarsMadeSimple
      @CarsMadeSimple  Před rokem

      From my understanding you should not exceed 15% tongue weight for conventional towing. Going over by a little might be acceptable but even if you say 15% of 7,000 lbs that would be 1,050 lbs. That leaves 882 lbs of payload possible within the truck. This is a comfortable margin for a few people and stuff. If you are able to back off the tongue weight a little this would add capacity. Just looking online, many 20-24' double axle trailers are actually closer to 5,500 - 6,000 lbs wet. I think a 1/2 ton truck should handle this easily even with added wind resistance if you are balancing your tongue weight correctly.

    Great video.. seems like the 2.7 does not need to redline in order to meet its max torque, so technically it will be easier, and quicker to get up to speed with less fuss. I know you maxed out redline during hard acceleration on the 2.7 but that is not the norm for most driving conditions. You're not going to be trying to do burnouts with a trailer out back.. as long as you can get the truck/trailer combo up and running using its low end torque, there's no need to hit the higher rpms, thus reducing wear and increasing the 2.7's engine longevity, vs the 5.3's requirement to rev higher in order to get similar torque results.

    • @CarsMadeSimple
      @CarsMadeSimple  Před rokem

      The computer will control what it thinks is ideal for current throttle input. It is likely true during hard acceleration revving the engine out is slightly better than shifting early in most cases. I agree that in most cases you'll be below redline in the 2.7.

When afm engaged it would make a rattle sound so I had to keep the transmission to M5 to keep it from going into v4 mode. Dealer told me $2500 to replace the lifters. I ended up doing it all myself. It was quite easy actually. Those lifters can still fail when disabling the afm. I do believe the catch can had something to do with my afm lifter collapsing.

    The reason this is a bad comparison video is because the 2.7 L comes with the 342 rear end the 5.3 L is not necessarily option with the 342 rear end..... Yes they make a tremendous difference over the last 10 years I have owned both, a 5.3 L with the 323 rear end and the 342 Eaton locker. I've also owned a 6.2 L with a 323 rear end and a 6.2 L with the 342 locker. They make a tremendous difference including the max tow rating. But not necessarily the tongue weight rating which relies specifically on having the max tow haul package versus the trailering.... They are two very different RPO codes.
    So unless you know what you're doing when you make a comparison particularly analyzing which package is on which vehicle you're really not doing a very fair comparison.
    By the way there is only a hundred pound curb weight difference between the 2.7 L crew cab short box and the 5.3 L crew cab short box.
    However now that I own a 2023 2.7 L crew cab short box after just trading in

    I hear nothing but good stuff for this 2.7L 4-banger. The only thing I really have an issue with, it sounds like a turd! Yes, I'm a little old school, but I really don't want my truck sounding like a scolded hamster. I enjoy the sound that a V-8 makes. It may be a petty thing to some, but that is just my 2 cents worth. Reliability for today's 5.3 certainly is questionable, and I wish GM would get this engine fixed-up properly.

  • @jhagen4850
    @jhagen4850 Před rokem

    All gasoline engines do is convert fuel into kinetic energy. With modern engine design, transmissions and fuel mapping, there's not going to be much difference between one engine and another in the same vehicle, which is probably why manufacturers are moving away from offering multiple engine options. Adding electric to the mix via hybridization is the only way to make a real difference in performance or fuel economy.
