  • So I put a new track on the 797 and traction is no longer a problem. Unfortunately it turns out that at speed it is rubbing against the tunnel protectors and acting as a brake :/ Couldn't do much about it right there. So after about a 3rd of the track it felt like someone threw out an anchor and trap speed was a pretty bad 101 km/h.. Times weren't good either.
    But we had a nice day of testing anyway :)

    I’ve built and raced sleds for years and I’ve said enough with the newer technology, I hate it!! Next year I’m going back to building old school muscle just because it was actually rewarding and enjoyable.
    Glad I found this video, nice sled , hope you’re still keeping her rolling.

    Those carbs can be tricky!. The attention to detail is the utmost with the gaskets and needle arm setting. My first was a 68 372 jlo in a amf skeedaddler. Fun fun!.

    Glad you got it figured out!.
    Friend of mine was a ski doo dealer, from 68 to 75. Told me all about the early sleds, dealing with rotax on the first triples. Hes about 80 now but has some good stories.

      That's awesome, I bet he has great stories! I actually got in contact with 2 guys that used to race my Blizzard back in 71, got some funny stories there too :)
      It's no walk in the park getting 3 Tillys dialed in at the same time, but I think it's pretty close to where it wants to be. The middle carb is always the one that starts acting up first for me. Hoping to do some more racing with it this winter :)

    Props to you for actually out riding the sled unlike 99% of the early blizzards sitting on a shelf.

      @Hollaendaren  Před 4 lety

      I have yet to convince anyone but myself to ride it. Nobody wants to be the one to break something on it. So I've never heard it from the side line myself :/

      @@Hollaendaren where abouts you at? I could help you out lol.
      Id be a little shy to run it wot for more than 2 seconds. What was factory hp? 100ish?
      I have a 775 tnt. I added a power block clutch. Huge difference and also eliminates the crankshaft harmonics from those old rotax dog clutchs. An old racer told me that those factory primary's were generally the culprit for failed cranks,so out of balance.the more rom the worse it gets. What does she turn for rpm?

    My uncle from Lancaster NH raced with one of these beasts back in the day and amassed himself quite a room of trophies.

    ive been wondering about you and that sled how you going to trim it? It sounded really healthy !

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm having some clearance issues with the new track, the lugs are too tall and rub in the front, but I need them for traction so don't want to cut them down. And the track is a bit too long (120'' vs 114'' original) causing it to rub in the back. I hope that removing the tunnel protectors in the front will solve the first problem, and maybe larger idlers in the back will solve the 2nd problem :)
      As for the engine, it is completely stock atm and I'm not going to touch it because they have very weak connecting rods. But I am gathering parts to build a 2nd engine (also a 797) for it with a sturdier crank so I can do some porting!

    Cool old sled, maybe a touch lean on top. Seemed to fade a bit, or its shifting a bit much up there. Saw your thought, hands on those stacks.. 😉

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren  Před 5 lety

      Actually what happened there was that my safety tether cord got sucked into one of the carbs so the butterflies didn't close ;) So that's why it had such high idle after the finish. But yeah my first thought was it was running extremely lean! :) I'm just glad it the cord didn't go any further in than it did, I've shortened it a bit now so it can't get sucked in any more.

    I have a 645 blizzard. 71 model year with cleared track. Looking to swap it for an all rubber track. Any tips or info you can pass along

  • @updragracer

    sounded like it went lean too . it needs better fuel flow from the tank I bet .

  • @terrypikaart4394
    @terrypikaart4394 Před 5 lety

    It sounded good out of the hole, just laid down a bit at about half way. Just basically two circuit carbs, low sounds good. Yea maybe a 1/4 turn fatter on high speed, or a bigger second number on that clutch spring. Im sure you will get her screaming all they down the strip!.

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren  Před 5 lety

      It laid down because my track was rubbing like crazy against the suspension. So I was basically riding with the brake on :/ this was the first time I went fast with the new track, hadn't noticed it during testing at home.

    Wow, I know you weren't happy with the speed but it sure rips off the line!

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren  Před 7 lety

      Yeah I'm pretty happy with how it takes off! :) 60 foot times are still not great but not bad either, and traction is awesome with the new track. 60 foot should also improve a bit once I get this new track sorted out.
      I found some major interference problems with the new track, was in a hurry to get it back together before this day so didn't notice it before. But I switched from a cog driven to an internal drive track, and the internal drive thingies that stick out are hitting the suspension in 2 places and pretty bad too. And on top of that the track is hitting the tunnel too because it's a bit longer than what the tunnel was made for.. Major brakes there, I'm actually suprised it even did 101 km/h because I can't turn the track by hand once it gets hung up on those things. Should be solved soon, I just hope we'll have some snow left when I'm done with it so I can test it one more time this winter.

      Here's to hoping for more snow for you!
      We have nothing left here in Bozeman Montana. Maybe next fall you can help me with a Oly build, I like the idea of a strong single cylinder. I have enjoyed watching you compete in a variety of classes with your Oly. I would like to do the same someday
