Regarding character deaths, I think people don't talk enough about the symbolic representation of society through the way they died. Example - Ali, the purest person in the game, dies by getting betrayed, an accurate message that the nicest people in life always end up getting stabbed in the back.

and the least loyal person in the exact same episode also gets shot.
The series goes out of its way to show that it isn't good nature, it isn't loyality, it isn't intelligence, it isn't caution or talent or anything like that, that allows you to win. It's luck.
Gi-Hun bets on horses, which is all down to luck. The whole series starts with his luck of betting right. The last episode is called lucky day. The old man asks him if his luck has finally run out.
If it is a commentary on capitalism, like everyone says it is, then that commentary is that people who get rich, got there out of dumb luck. Gi-Hun survives half of his games through dumb luck.

You’re right. The whole concept is exactly about that. It’s similar in other films and series, like Snowpiercer and The Running Man to a degree. They are supposed to be making a remake of The Running Man which is the same as the book (which was written by Stephen King). That will also be similar with poor, desperate people agreeing to risk their lives for the enjoyment of others to win lots of money in a rigged game. In the film of The Running Man he is tricked and forced to take part in the game but in the book, like in squid game, he takes part voluntarily, risking his life because he wants the money.

I think the reason why the old man acted the way he did towards Gi-hun was because Gi-Hun showed the old man kindness, respect and his caring nature so it kinda restored the old man’s faith in humanity- to an extent. It’s a game where you want the other opponents eliminated and Gi-Hun being so nice to the old man and trying to help him succeed in the game was not what any of the other characters were doing. During the marble game, the old man could see how much Gi-Hun didn’t want to lose and die, but didn’t want to cheat, but also didn’t want the old man to die, not knowing it didn’t matter, he was going to live regardless as the games creator.

      2. When the staffs were serving the breakfast, Gi-hun said that he don't drink milk, and the old man said, "My son also hates milk, if you're my son then I will make you drink this milk my scolding you".
      3. Gi-hun's mother full name was Oh Mal-Soon and the old man's full name was Oh Il-Nam

Someone also proposed a theory in which Hwang Jun-Ho's (the policeman's) death was also foreshadowed seeing how he killed a man and dropped him in the ocean only to be shot and dropped in the ocean himself. Of course, in Korean dramas people also tend to come back from the dead, but in this case I would have preferred Hwang Jun-Ho dead in Season 2 (hope it'll come too!) because it would show that when Hwang In-Ho accepted to be a Frontman, it is the price he ultimately paid: being forced into a situation where he has to kill his own brother.

The three ranks of guards are Worker (or Worker Ant), Warrior (or Warrior Ant) and Manager (Handler). In Korean that is일벌 (일개미), 전사 (전사 개미), 매니저. Romanized that is ilbeol (ilgaemi), jeonsa (jeonsa gaemi), and manija. They start with the letters ㅇㅈㅁ (ieung, jieut and mieum - I J M). These are represented as a circle ㅇ, a triangle ㅿ and a square ㅁ in the title of the Korean poster.

    • @roseblue_
      @roseblue_ Před 2 lety +11

@@wolfmanhcc If you mean this in English, it's exactly the same. Soldier is a synonym of Warrior in an ant, termite or a hive colony.
If you mean it in Korean, the words 군인 or 병사, I believe the first also has a hive, warror-soldier ant dictionary meaning.
The second means private or soldier. But 병사 has the same root as barracks and infirmary. It should have an association with a Hanja character that means a common bedding, a common barrack. So it's still a synonym, even though one word may derive from a Chinese word, the other from a Native Korean word etc...
However, I don't think that the meaning the writer(s) would want to give in this situation is Private. Sure, everyone in South Korea, including the Korean guards and the players in the movie (except maybe Ali) understand and instinctively follow a military hierarchy, because of their extended military service and their reserve military and civil defence status.
But these guards are not privates. Because, first of all we've got to admit, they do look like magenta ants with ant-like masks and they operate mindlessly in the Organization, without questioning their orders and not having a face (so they can commit the atrocities they do).
And secondly, their first two ranks are definitely hive ranks anyway.
So I choose the word 전사 that makes more sense and starts with a ㅈ and follows the logic of OJM, the romanised abbreviation of 오징어게임 (O-Jing-Eo-Ge-Im - Squid Game) used in Korea to name the series. The title in Korean on the poster is written in white and has these specific three letters (Jamo) ㅇ,ㅈ & ㅁ, turned to a circle, triangle and square in magenta (Google Squid Game in Korean).

He was scared. The players were killing each other - he, as an old man, would have been an easy target.
The other players did not know he was in charge of everything or that he was really a super rich successful business man just participating for fun, unlike the rest of them who actually want the money - it is shown through the show that most of the other players see him as a useless and worthless old man.
He definitely was scared because he would have been killed by them.
He wasn't acting like an old frail man either - he was exactly that, old and frail. He had a brain tumour too. He would not have stood a chance in the riot that was happening in that room. That's why he wanted to play in the games also, because he knew he was close to dying and wanted to feel alive again.
The guards knew not to kill him, but the players didn't.

I think when Ali dies because Sang-Woo tricked him out of his marbles is more about Sang-Woo's character than Ali's. Ali's boss was trying to screw him over by not paying him, Ali was taking money that was owed to him and not stealing. Sang-Woo being a Korean boss at a company before it went bankrupt cause he swindled investors, plays into his character. Ali mentioned that he had medical bills and later see that he lost a finger, which is why he needed to get paid the salary that was owed to him and the boss made a bunch of lies about not having any money. So it seems fitting that the boss would get his hand caught it the factory equipment.

Ali isn’t saying Sang-Woo at the end of the marble game. In Korean he’s actually using a respectful title that denotes Sang-Woo as not his peer but his better in terms of age, class and status. In his last moments alive he’s STILL seeing the best in his “friend”.
On the other end of this Gi-hun uses seniority language and behaviour towards Il-nam through every interaction as in Korean culture you respect your elders to a high level BUT in the last scene of the two he drops this language and behaviour. (To a western audience this is hugely missed but to its Korean audience its plain as day. Even when he passes the glass of water to Il-nam he does it with one hand, it’s considered very rude to not hand it to someone with both hands.)
Even if Gi-hun was being kind to Il-nam verbally this subtle change in actions would tell Il-nam that they are no longer friends, the trust is gone and Gi-hun couldn’t give a shit about him.

One is clearly attached to a chain that is anchored to the rope.
The other is padlocked to the wrist.
What is commonly shown as a "missing" padlock is merely the "other side" of the restraint.

But if that was the case... Say his team lost - How would they have explained everyone falling but him? The other teams players would see everyone fall but him... That didn't seem logical.

In red light green light when the doll scans everyone, clearly the 001 on his shirt lights up and his body is lined with green exactly like the crouching woman to his right. He IS being scanned, so the only other reasons for his confidence I can think of, is that either his number got locked and he wont be shot regardless, or he simply chose the games in an order that fit his skilllevel and he knew he wouldn't be caught.

Even the guy won the game was a really bad person. He lie cheated steal from his own mother until he killed her. There no heroes in this series. About the red hair color there are other theories as well, like all the participants chose blue card (even Gi hyun had blue hat while playing), the color red is a sign of being conscious rather than slaved by others, so all players were slaved by the capitalism somehow, the definition of red and blue color was mentioned in an old movie before.

And if we believe this we think he is not scared to die and just having fun. Also there was always a mystique that the old man ( in my mind) might have played this game more then once...
