They were much quieter with stock mufflers. I had a 5 week old BSA Lightning when I swapped bikes with a guy on a '71 R75 with Avon fairing. An hour later I got back on my BSA and instantly realized it was a POS in comparison. A week later it was traded in. That Avon fairing was great, so was the R75/5, it could cruise easy at 100 mph. The Avon fairing was narrow and extended low to add streamlining. The major flaw of the bike was that right as you approached 100 it would head shake till you got it a little faster. BMW extended the swing arm the next year.
I rode a very similar R75/5 for the better part of a decade. Really miss the sound of that bike starting on a cold morning. And it is the only bike I've ever seen that was quieter (exhaust-wise) at 100 mph than at 55.
Hi SHTOH, I prefer the R/60 because it is a little smoother and I have a nice set of period Craven hard bags on it. My R/60 is white, so it is easier to keep clean and it stands out a bit from all the black series 5s you usually see. The R/60 easily cruises all day at the highway speed limits and gets better fuel mileage.
Be sure to secure the right-side battery cover, from the factory all that holds it on is a weak rubber band. Mine fell off my '72 toaster and took forever to find a replacement that hadn't been run over as mine was after it fell off one night
Just a little smoother, every bit as comfortable and still more than enough power for back road exploring. It will still run at highway speeds, for as long as I care to ride. My R60 is also set up with a little windscreen, tank bag and hard bags for my rain suit, extra clothes for inclement weather, lunch, a few tools (never needed) and any other odds and ends.
I had this bike but in white with a Vetter flaring and matching saddlebags. The only bike I ever regretted selling.
Had one exactly like this beauty back in the 80's. Right down to the Continental Twins. I miss that bike.

Header pipes are stock, mufflers are Campbell's BMW /5 replica mufflers. I believe they are slightly louder than stock.

My R60 has the hard bags for reasons stated elsewhere. I don't like camping. one day rides are my preference.

Mufflers are model /6 and /7, not /5, there must be the sigar model on this/5.

Stock mufflers sound much better but made of crap metal, eaten away each 15,000 miles.
