Checking out everything; oil, tire pressure; a general walkaround before you go... a labor of love... BMW loves you back with superb performance & extreme satisfaction when you are on the move with these bikes!
Nice someone actually showing the right way to check oil level, and taking care to check tire pressure before the ride. Love the audio once you get moving too.
I have a 1971 R75/5 BMW.....they are a joy to ride. I've had 5 different R75/5's over the years. The 1971 Short Wheel Base is my favorite. They are simple to maintain and easy to work on if needed...….but they DO require maintenance and attention.
Nice. Unusual to have original fuel taps. I think they had cork seals. Spark plug caps also original pattern. Mufflers are a more modern design, great if you got the much more tapered end ones. Classic keeper
You can also look at the drive shaft itself. If the bike is a LWB, you'll see a roughly 2" area toward the back of the driveline that was welded in at the factory. Once you see one, you'll see how obvious it is.
my goodness, by the time you check everything like you did i would think twice about even riding it. too much boogie. i've had 3 /5's and have run so low on oil that there was nothing showing on the stick. still they always kept on ticking. your bike does seem very ticky though. perhaps a tightening of the valves?
The best part of riding my 1968 R60 was the 'clunky' when I put in 1st gear. Either these are brand new tires (see the front tire especially) or this bike is rarely ridden.
Beautiful bike!! My Dad had one he fixed up. I loved that old bike; even more than my R-60/7. If it hadn't gotten crushed in my brother's carport, I'd have it!! Would love to get another one. BTW: The R-60/5 will comfortably do 80!! I speak from experience!!
Hi. Lovely bike and quality video. My 30 year old R80 still has it's original toolkit....probably one of the nicest standard toolkits around, better than most modern bikes, and one that I'd rarely need to use in anger. It even came with it's own BMW hand towel.
Hi Kevin, nice video, I can see you take good care of this beauty, I would only do one thing different, I wouldn´t step on the kickstarter like you do it on a Harley, it´s aluminun, it´s easier to mount on the bike, step with the right leg on the right peg and give it a kick with the left leg, hope you don´t get me wrong, just trying to help. Also we´ll appreciate it if you make a longer riding video, thanks for posting.
Rode a R60/2 for 30,000 miles and the group I rode with all started our bikes as shown in the video. That cast aluminum kick starter never broke on any of the bikes in our group. We did have a side mount kick stand which made it easer to kick start from the side.
Thanks, I had to shoot all that first part over because I had a little fountain going and the mike on the camera is so hot it sounded like a bath tub going full blast.
@RCA2nd That`s the turn signal indicator light. Try Googling Bob`s BMW, Capitol Cycle, or Hucky`s BMW for parts. There are many others too. You should have no problem finding any part. Mine has the Euro handlebars, the American bars are taller. Also it is the short wheel base (SWB) version. The later LWB model has the battery side covers & different seat cover. Thanks.
*clunk* I had a 75/6, and I miss the sound of the gear change. I regret that I got it as my first bike after learning to ride, though, because it was too much for me to handle. I wish I had gotten something like a small single instead; something like a Ducati 350 Desmo would have been nice. (I don't want much, do I?)
@65jammie Sorry for not getting back to you right away. I don`t think my motorcycle would have any problem going 75 mph but I usually don`t go faster than 65 mph. The R75/5 would probably be a better choice for higher speeds. The R60 & R75 are suppose to run on premium and on hot days the modern "premium" still causes my engine to ping. Most of the riding I do is just around town. Parts are easy to find online, Your typical BMW dealer isn`t going to have much but they could order anything.
would you recommend this type of bike for a beginner with only 6months of experience? Also how hard is it to work on? what parts are the easiest and which should i take to a professional to fix? thanks and have a nice day
option man naw man this is a kind of bika that should be or atleast one of your last bikes, its a hard bike to ride but its one hell of a machine..... for a starter i recomend some sort of enduro or something, but its your choice
Hi, from England. Great quality clip. I'm in the process of a rolling restoration on an R75/5 SWB 1971. Need you to donate the following items, tool tray, complete tool role !! Will be very pleased with myself if my bike ends up looking as good as yours. Regards
Why so noisy? I worked on BM´s back in the 50´s and the ticking of my watch drove me mad! Even the R69´s were quieter than that? Maybe something changed??
Have a look to your valves! Perhaps too much freeplay only, but I would expect that there is more. BMW Twins are well known for their smooth mechanical noises. Yours sounds like awfull.
Man, this sure brings back memories. Thanks for the video!

My first BMW was a well-used and properly maintained 1970 R60/5. I wish I still had it.
Mottorbike ownership doesn't get any better than this...fantastic bike and very authentic helmet.Great video!!!

What's not to like? Excellent presentation of a classic and superb motorcycle!

Merci pour cette belle vidéo, on en veut encore! :)
Thanks, I hope to do another motorcycle video sometime. I just got a new MacBook and HD video camera so I have no excuses.

Love the old air cooled beemers, engine reminds me of the old radial biplane engines
I hope you still enjoy your beautiful BMW! Viele liebe Grüße aus Deutschland 👍

Very nice film. I viewed it tonight, here in Paris and dreamed a moment...
Nice colours, nice details...and birds.
Thank's !
Eric.

he maybe did it for the video. Also i agree about the ticking, something seems off
To properly work on a old Airhead, you need green bottle beer!!

Nice bike and cool video!
Nice flick and sweet bike!
wow what a properly mainyained motorcycle.. and cool ride :) good one..

I had a R50/5 and it would do 80, just. And an r75/5 that would do 120.
Again, I'm impressed by German engineering because you also have a useable air pump and tools under a hinged seat. Thx for the vid.
Essa moto virou mito. Valeu o vídeo.

My 1988 R80 mono came with two toolkits, makes you wonder ... ;) czcams.com/video/TPwV23WTJE4/video.html
a fine machine ! cheers mate ! i just stand upon restauring one of these machines...see you soon here
Well done...I liked to watch your video very much.
Beautiful bike, beautiful film. (K1100rs & R100/r owner)
Thanx for a very nice video. Jacob / Sweden

It's the right thing to do, starting with left foot. If you pend your weight to the right the bike will fall to the right side and you'll go over it.
Great video
Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance
Mit eins der schönsten Boxermodell, mein Traumbike ist aber R90S
amazing machine
nice bike ,
Class machine though it sounds very tappety no offence intented its pristine
A beautifully-shot video, very creative and lots of use of angles which makes all your little tasks really fun to watch. Well done!
Thanks, I had to shoot all that first part over because I had a little fountain going and the mike on the camera is so hot it sounded like a bath tub going full blast.
Amazing video sir, i watched it speachless...

World's best bikes BMW R series
Awesome!
I checked on line and the long wheel base must have come out in 1973.
Great video. Beautiful bike.
I had a 72 R60/5. They had electric starters starting in 1970. Perhaps you are not aware of that extra button on the handlebars. It is the starter.
Nice!
sounds like it's missing shims on the valve rockers. It shouldn't be anywhere near that noisy.
(I have a 60/5 from 73 and it's so quiet in comparison)
You mean that high -pitched pinging/ringing Neil ?
*clunk* I had a 75/6, and I miss the sound of the gear change. I regret that I got it as my first bike after learning to ride, though, because it was too much for me to handle. 2009й боже, как это было давно)
Ohhh man. I've got my 75/5. Now I need a set of those goggles!
Where didja gettem?

Love the coffee cup mate I'm gunna get one
fantastic bike! and the airpump a original part?
Yes, the pump is original. When I saw it and the tool kit I knew I had to buy the bike.
WHAT! NO CRUMPET!!!
Looks like a Van Warmerdam film..
How would you rate its' touring potential...hwy cruising at 110-120Kmh?

Viccey thanks for the advice, it was greatly appreciated
Why is it a hard bike to ride?
👏👏👏😍

wear any levis jeans or leather chaps?
Is that in Austin?
Why so noisy? I worked on BM´s back in the 50´s and the ticking of my watch drove me mad! Even the R69´s were quieter than that? Maybe something changed??
Might just be the camera recording the sound really loud.
briotone My /2 is much quieter than my /7 too. Normal for the beast.
My R75/5 after a proper valve adjustment (.04" intake, 08" exhaust) is really quiet - just a barely audible valve tick...
Its only dangerous if the valves stop to sound like spanish castanet band. It gets a little quieter when properly warmed up though.
You don't know what your talking about the bike sounds prefect

There is a metal one attached to dip stick on the threaded end. Hard to see it on this video.
