- Hello Everyone, UForced here. I'm bringing you a brand new video on How To Build The MOST EFFICIENT Automatic Kelp Farm Tutorial for the latest version of Minecraft!
UPDATED VIDEO - • The MOST EFFICICENT Ke...
*INFORMATION*
- Smelting Kelp gets turned into dried kelp which is a food source & It's a great fuel source too!
- When smelted and crafted into dried kelp blocks, kelp can be used to smelt items. One kelp block can smelt 20 items, so a single undried kelp ends up smelting 1.22 items. This makes kelp useful as a renewable fuel source
- Smelting kelp also grants 0.1 experience. To put this into perspective, it would take about 3,060 smelted kelp to go from level 27 to level 30.
Material List:
248 - Blocks of your choice
42 - Glass
16 - Pistons
16 - Observers
16 - Redstone Dust
2 - Hopper
4 - Chest
2 - Water Buckets (Infinite Water Source)
16 - Kelp

The observers and pistons aren’t working for me. I’ve redone this build multiple times. The kelp is working fine it’s just the actually farm that isn’t working
I got halfway through this video before seeing that you made an updated one for 1.20, if anyone is struggling with this build, use blocks to get rid of the water scource above the water, and use signs to keep the water out, that was a quick fix fo my build.
This is the best kelp farm I've ever built my dude! Usually the other tutorials are way too hard to follow for me because I'm not a redstone expert, but it actually works!
Thank you!
Java 1.20.1 for anyone having the kelp stay at the bottom or not float all the way you have to place water blocks for the entire farm not just the top layer
1.19.3 too, thanks for your advice
Basically what I told them😂 thanks for making it even more clearer for people
Also thought I’d add that If you put smokers under the hoppers instead of chests you can connect chests to the smoker via hopper and automatically cook your kelp
Amazing !!
I'll add to that even more lol you can set it up so that once the kelp is cooked, part of it gets sent back into the smokers as fuel 😂 infinite fuel and cooked kelp lol
@@JoshwaLawbut how
@@muhammadrafasyaakhtarizqi4414 oh yeah I messed up in my comment, I forgot the you have to make them into kelp blocks first, my bad haha
If you do that and the output of the farm is more than the smoker can handle you’ll lose items. Just a thought
This was one of the easiest farms I've built and it works fine as far as I can tell.
:) thank you!
I used this with a combination of simple storage network mod. All I did was drop a receiver remote in the collection chest.
This worked very well for me. Thanks!
You’re so welcome. Nice modification!
Solid video, very helpful. I don’t typically subscribe to Minecraft channels but that material list in the description earned my subscription😂
Thank you very much!!
This is literally the fastest tutorial ever, love it!
This one is a bit crap for a design. Check the pinned comments for a scalable and expandable design. It’s just as fast and has an additional automatic xp bank design too
thnx man, testing in 1.19.4 and works perfect :)
You may eventually run into issues with the kelp not flowing all the way to the top but there’s a fix for that in the pinned comments
@@UForced okey, I will check it from time to time, thnx for the heads up
thanks for the video :)
You’re welcome!
another thing to add you can stack these just put a sighn where the hopper goes on the stacked one should all connect up
Amazing!!
THANK YOU!!!
You’re so welcome!!
This works pretty good! Though, there seems to be an issue when the kelp reaches a high enough age: it grows to only two blocks high, which never triggers the observers. Is there a way to rig up all of the pistons to activate at once to "reset" it manually?
Could always push the pistons and observers down a block
You could just use a button
@@UForced That uproots the kelp, sadly... Been trying to put observers under pistons, but can't fire pistons on their own then.
I saw something about if you either use bone meal, or sheers at the top of the kelp, it'll start to grow again as if the spot you bonemealed/sheered is the new source block for the kelp. Can't remember what video I saw that in, but it was recent. Give those a shot and see if that doesn't help.
Dear people,
There are 2 solutions to the "problems" of this farm
1. The problem where the kelp ends growing only 2 block tall and never reaching the observer.
Solution: place the row of block behind the pistons with redstone on top.
The observer should power the entire row of pistons therefore even the ones that don't grow to the observers still get harvested.
Cons: the water source in front of the pistons becomes a flowing water and not pushing all the kelp to the top.
Personally i think the kelp grows fast enough anyway.
2. Place a button on top of the block behind the observer. When you see a kelp not growing further than 2 blocks high, press the button which should activate that one piston harvesting the kelp.
Cons: you have to climb on top of the farm to check the kelp every once in a while but the water source in front of the pistons stay water sources since there's still sources on all sides.
I hope this helps some people out
This farm is great!
I build it in my superflat survival challenge with the button method.
Tons of kelp in no time 👍🏻
Great solution!!
Dude, thank you so much for this. the tip at 1:06 is gonna save me tons of headache!
You’re so welcome ! :)
Works, except having just completed it, my kelp don't grow nearly that fast. XD Have you sped up their growth rate, or is it something like because I just planted mine, they have to mature more first?
Also, as I'm playing on survival I personally installed some doors near the front waterfall/glass area as an access panel in case I need to troubleshoot anything as it'll save me breaking the glass.
What's good about this design is that it's fairly small/minimalist; if you're happy with the kelp output for a single machine you can easily put multiple side by side or above and below. You can also feed the kelp chests directly into stuff like furnaces for Dired Kelp or Composters for Bonemeal, which is also nice.
he cranked up the growth speed by 100 times in order to demonstrate the way it works
@@pl0xy Ah, I see. I've just got MC running in the background while I do other stuff, so it's nice to generate a little bit of kelp. It's just interesting that it feels like the little plantation I have over near my wheat and sugar feels like it grows way more rapidly.
According to some testing I saw a player do in a vid, this sort of setup should result in 7 kelp per plant per hour, so that's... 112. Doesn't feel like I'm getting 112 per hour. I will say that I unknowingly built my farm in between two chunks; that's not something I usually look out for but I have heard farms on chunk borders can run into issues.
@@jaxsonbateman its a little slow i suggest building multiple and stacking them on the stacked ones just put a sighn where the hoppers go
@@jaykobgod8201 Right now I'm still fairly early game in my SMP, so we're just doing a manual farm in a channel we built. We're not using it much so we don't feel any urgency to do this, but eventually we may swap to a semi-auto system - pistons hooked up to a daylight sensor to break it once a day, and a lever so we can do it at will if we want to farm more kelp.
For the main area where the kelp grows, do I need to pour water buckets in every location (including at every height), or just the top row below the temporary slabs? (which BTW are missing from the material list). If I only pour water at the top, won't it create a current that goes down?
OK, it works more or less. Some kelp stays at the bottom, and I'd like to understand how the water works in order to fix it.
BTW it's a lot easier to break the slabs from the top of the building, before putting in the glass roof, rather than doing it from below, in the water. So, in order: water inside, slabs on top, water on top, then roof.
And here's a variant for early game before visiting the nether: put regular blocks instead of observers, move the redstone one block up (so all pistons go at the same time), connect a button to the redstone. It's worth making the farm taller then, to collect more kelp in one go.
The video showed how to place the water step by step. You fill all the blocks except the top row with source blocks. Then you place two source blocks ontop of the slabs so they flow in one direction.
I recommend doing exactly what I’ve done. I wouldn’t change anything other than building a entire different kelp farm which produces 10x as much.
Also your last comment is manual, which people can do if they’d like but they still get the same output with the amount of time they’ve waited :)
@@UForced OK. The video wasn't clear to me about the placement of the water, thanks. I redid the water, and the following problem happens often: its all fine initially, but after a while the top row becomes fully filled, there's no flow anymore. No idea why. Java 1.19.3.
The point about making it taller if the farm is manual is so that it keeps growing while away rather than being limited by the height. If one collects kelp only after 2 hours, it's best if it grew very tall.
Try removing the top water and try the method again. Seems like something went wrong after and that fix all should be good
@@UForced I did that à few times already, it keeps happening again :)
I see the water flowing at the top, made sure to place it correctly, redid it twice and still all the kelp just sinks to the bottom and sits there
Send me screenshots on my discord :)
I had this problem with another farm.
@@hambone6793 if you get problems with this farm join my discord I’ll assist better on there :)
its because you have to fill the water at the bottom first, you skipped the step to completely fill the machine with water. You break the slabs (important that it's slabs) afterwards
@@quentinstevens1198 i did so but it didn't work actually, the kelp just sank to the bottom 😮
works for bedrock too! i made the farm and saw it was for java and watched it to see if It would work and it did!
❤️
How did you get this to work without the water flowing out the back of the pistons? 😭
My fix to the not growing more than 2 blocks is to just harvest the whole batch whenever I notice the yield decreases then replant. Of course it’s some manual work but it takes less than a minute to do and tbh many farms require at least some sort of occasional maintenance.
Honestly I’ve looked at everyone’s kelp farm tutorial. Each one should have encountered this issue. Hopefully they’ll fix ageing soon. :)
I'm having an issue where it'll stop working, and I have to go in and manually place all the kelp up to the observers to get it working again. Any suggestions?
Checked the pinned message
you're gonna have to constantly replace the kelp farm because when you get kelp that can only grow to a max length of 2 the observers will never activate
It’s because of the ageing mechanic. Max age is 25 if the bottom kelp is an age of 1 the next kelp could be 25. It’s silly
Anyway to avoid this? Explains why mines stopped working
If I put water source blocks on all the temporary slabs, won't that mean they are just water source blocks? Ima see what happens when I build it.
I see what I was confused about. Well done!
❤️
Why does my kelp grow so much slower? Yours produces it almost constantly at 300 ticks, I have it set to 1000 and it cuts down one kelp every 5 seconds. Help?
Are you talking about the intro?
So do you pour one bucket of water on each slab? It's a bit unclear how you put the water
ya you have to water log all slabs
No, you don’t water log the slabs. You placed 2 buckets of water ontop of the slabs. Do not water log them
the problem is everytime the pistons are activated they de-waterlog the blocks that they move into
It’s a tank full of water logged blocks. It’ll regen to a full source of water
@@UForced Yes, there IS NO PROBLEM with water source blocks destruction guys, stop saying that. Build it and see it for yourself. Make sure to fully fill everything with water sources, especially the half space under the temporary slabs. The kelp floats up, then towards the chests, then quickly down in the waterfall formed by the one block pillar of flowing water above the hoppers.
@@solarreturn2338 no pistons de waterlog sources of water. i ve even tried with soulsand to see if it carries me afloat and it doesent
@@Air_Osprey Do you mean to say that in your farm, the pistons destroy the water source blocks and turn them to running water blocks? I don't know if this happens to me, but even if it did, as soon as the new kelp grows, the running water block will turn to source block again, because that is what kelp does. Everything floats up and away just like it supposed to. I am on 1.19.3 vanilla on Paper server. There might be differences with the version, server type, server plugins in use, and even the are you are building in. I am building in the area generated when the server was 1.16?
Friend that built the farm in the area generated on 1.13.x report that their kelp never stops growing (see below).
BTW, I am removing this farm, because it is pointless to build. It stops working shortly, because the kelp reaches the age of 25 and stops growing. You have to enter the farm and remove the second kelp layer, leaving only one on the ground, or provide some other means of doing so. No big deal, I have made a door by removing two glass blocks over one chest and adding ladders to stop the water flowing out. But, now, it is not automated farm anymore, and the productivity is miserable because you need an observer and a piston for each kelp stalk!
I have found that simply making a pit for the kelp works much much better and gives me tonnes of kelp I can't keep up with smelting. I converted a small pond to a pit 14 x 26 x 26 deep (you can do your own size, there is no reason for my choice) , and placed kelp on the bottom. This gives me 14x26=364 kelp stalks, which is 22 times more than this farm (16). Yes, I have to do some manual work. It grows all the way to the surface. Now, I just dive and walk on the bottom cutting the kelp at it's second level, and leaving the first one to grow. Everything floats up by itself and I just have to swim a little to collect. This brings me a way more kelp that the farm ever did. I am thinking of adding a flying machine at the bottom to cut it automatically.
my kelps don't end up in the hoppers, they stay in the water, in front of the observers
Seems like you haven’t put the water in correctly
I am running into a problem where my kelp items only float until a certain point then stops floating before reaching the top row. Could I please get some help?
Is it staying at the bottom or? Only thing I’d suggest is getting rid of all the water and place it again
@@UForced I took the water and I moved it a block lower, it seemed to have fixed the problem, thanks!
Farm works great for a while then the Kelp stops growing once it gets 2 blocks high. I gotta break the second layer and it works great again. Any ideas? What’s happening
Age of the kelp. I think it’s 21 is the max. I think there’s a way of checking the age of the kelp on the f3 screen. Just check the bottoms of each kelp you’ve placed and re place them down age 1. Lemme know if that works. I’ve never had an age issue before. I must have been lucky I guess
@@UForced Yes, I did replace the kelp, and it started to grow again. Had to make a door for that.
BTW, initially, I had no kelp anywhere near me, and the farm worked. Then I wanted to see if naturally grown kelp in a deep hole (64 columns) would do slower or faster, and this almost halted the farm, because I guess all this kelp competed for the ticks? Removed it all, and the farm started to go again. So, make sure there is no nearby kelp.
Sorry, what?
there, right from the beginning, the problem with kelp growing to age 25 too early and the piston couldn't detect it. how do i fix that?
Remove all the kelp to age 1
@@UForced
but you aren't preventing them from reaching age 25. So you have to constantly manually remove kelp
The kelp isn't floating to the top when I try this
Water isn’t placed correctly
items dont go up for me
Water isn’t placed correctly
I love your accent
Thank you!
Everybody is doing this on survival, if i need to break the glass every time to enter and go out of the farm to fill it up with water, i will need more glasses
Should always bring more. Or watch the video first. There’s also a pinned comment to a new video
how much does this farm produce in a hour ?
2k
isn`t this made useless with any level of fortune? i just mined for 30 and got 4 stacks of coal
You do not need to make it the size I made mine lol. If you go above and beyond you’ll never need coal again
does it have to be glass?
No
the pistons does nothing
??
Same idk what to do
it gos infrond of the obsever but does nothing
Eh?
@@UForced They commented twice, they're wondering why when they put the pistons in front of the observer, the pistons didn't move.
Weird because the piston is on one layer and the observers is on another and connecting both of them up is solid blocks and redstone dust. That’s how pistons extend
My Kelp keeps floating and not moving
You sure you placed the water at the top correctly? Because that’s the only reason it won’t work
@@UForced thanks, it works now
All blocks have to be waterlogged correct?
Correct. Above the slabs you just place two water buckets and let the water flow across it
@@UForced alright! I think I got it working! Amazing vid tho!
🤌🏻 amazing
tysm
i can have inf food and feul now
You sure can!!
Can’t get it to work, the kelp just sinks
Due to the water not being placed correctly
im from donutsmp
Cool!
What is the output per minute approximately?
For this one, it’ll be like slow maybe 64 every min but you can make multiple of these farms
@@UForced Wait, how do you get 64 every minute with this one?
My kelp gets stuck at the top
You probably need to start the water again at the top
my shit aint floating up
Check the pinned comments for the new, expandable, scalable design :D
@@UForced what pinned comment
Check again, my bad haha
