2:32 "The player sprite gets the voxel treatment too, and yes, it is glorious."
>Tilts camera to Doomguy ass
Probably one of the many reasons why we got the mod
Slayer of Hell's armies with the dumpy
More like Dumpguy
some like the asthetics. some with an s too many
@@DeuxExNoir you rang?
I think this gives the best of both worlds. Having 3D models while still having that 2D asthetic. I think it looks incredible.
I agree!
I think this is the best way to have it. You still have the original feel of the 2D aspect in a 3D design without making it look like some kind of horror that came from one of your nightmares.
The only things I don’t like are that it still only has 8 rotations on things that have any, & it doesn’t make the animations more fluid.
@@lyokianhitchhiker the goal was to make doom 3D, not smoother. For that you need smooth doom and someone to make more animation frames on whatever program the author used.
@@midorifox I get that, I was just hoping for a best of all worlds.
I got about a minute and a half into the video thinking "Damnit, Icarus, are you gonna show us what it looks like instead of playing vanilla doom and talking about it?" before I realized it was actually voxel.
Same
@@fiery_gamerz So glad I wasn't the only one. It really doesn't look 3D at all until they die or he spins around them.
A truly masterpiece
This is probably biggest praise Cheello could get for his voxel mod, must have been tons of hours of hard work!
@@podfuk He said it takes him hours per frame, so yeah
Not gonna lie, I legitimately thought you were playing with 2D sprites as first, sort of as a build up to the reveal of the 3D voxel models, only realize that- holy shit- they were actually the 3D models the entire time.
Top 10 Anime Plot Twists
Me too .
Took me almost two minutes to notice it 😅
Same here, but later in the video when there were those items sitting there, it was more obvious. I think that when they managed to nail the right level of pixellation, that it did somewhat mask the effect. IMHO, that's a good thing as it lessens the distraction.
Always has been
Honestly the only 3D mod for Doom that I approve. The work that went into making every single frame of all the animations is just mind boggling.
"that you approve" "mind boggling" "work"
@@CrispiteVA "keywords"
@@negativefg7922 "quotation" "marks"
@@negativefg7922 actually, it's spelled "keyboards". nice try
>work that went into making every single frame of all the animations
u could say the same thing about any 3d model from any game / film
did u honestly approve Jurrassic Park? Was the effort making all the frames for the dinosaurs mind boggling?
Its close enough to the classic doom look that my brain forgets its modded, i love it.
same, then i remember it when i see pickups
I’ve been hoping for voxel doom for years. Now it is here in wide implementation. Fantastic job!
Thank you for manifesting this mod into reality by hoping for it!
@@oisyn- A true jedi mind trick indeed. ^_^
I think part of what helps this along is that there isn't a lighting model for the surfaces. No PBR, no lambert shading, it sticks to how the original game faked lighting on its characters.
This looks great, and showcases the importance of art direction as well, keeping it still looking and feeling like Doom, but with a shiny new coat, where as something like the Unreal 4 version looks soulless, and god awful. The shiny coat has to suit and fit properly, lol.
I'm very much looking forward to the Doom II update for this mod.
Also, for anyone else who was disappointed to see that this mod isn't for Doom II as of yet, Cheelo says that the update will be released in the very near future, and he's already made Voxels for Doom II, as well, but he hasn't finished them just yet.
This is just amazing. Art that doesn't sacrifice Nostalgia.
Doom 3D done right! This is one of very few mods that actually makes me want to play Doom once again.
Which is kind of sad because it could have been done years earlier. The hardest part of this would have been to generate animated 3d models and the appropriate sprites for each frame from each direction. After that, you could just have the game load the frame for the orientation that you're in and it would look correct. A ton of work, sure, but probably not as hard technically as one would expect.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade some of the sprites were pretty hard, gibs being one of them
I saw a thing a while back where they also did a few test voxel wall textures giving the switch some depth, really cool, the same author bemoaned about the number of frames in the animation needing to be voxelated years ago, and now someone's gone though the effort of doing it for doom, color me impressed!
I'm glad you covered this mod. I've been following cheelo for a while now, the timelapses showing the creation of the different models are almost hypnotic. He even did some full videos where he voxelized some of the assets. It's really cool and interesting to watch the 2d-to-3d transition :D
Needless to say the final product is really good. Keep the original look but at the same time offers a new perspective. Pinkies in particular are so much scarier in voxel version, when they are close and personal.
I've been following cheelio and Nash for a while now and watched the stream when they released it they've been working with some of the guys to get some ray tracing shadows and stuff and he's also been working on the doom 2 monsters too and during the stream someone mentioned they had some of the original toys the weapon sprites are based on so he was looking into voxelising them too
so they are working with ray tracing modders too? because the sprites really break immersion sometimes while playing PrBoom Ray Traced.
@@RockinEnabled they said it was for real time shadows to work with gzdoom I think it was a 2hour stream dude I can't remember all of it but it's up on nash's channel
What I love more than the mod itself is the amount of dedication, effort, and care that Cheello put into this mod-a 3D model for *every* animation frame, voxel-style parallax mapping for the map textures, and further improvements to previous work. He deserves every penny from his patrons.
It's great! I play it at a low resolution and the voxel models really blend in with the game. Absolutely well done.
This is extremely cool.
I've been playing Hexen with HD upscaled parallax textures and HD upscaled sprites and been wanting something like that for Doom that's not terrible (the attempts so far have been), but this is a whole other kind of awesome.
Dang, a voxelized Hexen would be pretty dope too.
@@frozenbean think it's a much better candidate - you get more movement and close combat in Hexen. Problem with Doom is most enemies hardly move and stay at same angle to player from a distance, so the effect barely registers.
@@BarneyCarroll I see this as more of a proof of concept that could be applied to more id Tech 1 games now that it's been proven viable. Hopefully that's the case!
I have actually tried this in VR and it's amazing.
questzdoom? if yes, i think i would like to try it too. Though i've already played it (brutal-doomified freedoom1, freedoom2, brutal-doom campaign) far too much already, i'm afraid i'll be bored.
what VR device?
@@rivolinho Well I have a Quest 2.
the modding scene in doom and the wads in general still fascinate me.
one that really blew me away was sonic robo blast 2.
I think Icarus kept this video short so that he could play more Voxel Doom 😂
I've been watching this mod develop as it progressed and it's really awesome seeing it finally release!
"mod" "finally release"
@@CrispiteVA What are you on about? It is a mod and while it's not the final release, it is the first public release.
@@Kyezoar its not a mod, its an addon, its not a release, its a crappy demo
@@CrispiteVA Ah so you're one of those people. Plus addon and mod could apply for the same reason
@@Kyezoar one of what people, normal? and you are wrong
I'm glad I got to watch some of the progress of voxel Doom
Honestly what impresses me about this mod is that it shows me that the Barons pretty much get partially split in half and fall back on themselves when they die, I always thought they melted when I was younger.
This is beautiful and impressive. It opens up a whole new potential for Doom mods. I can only imagine where this could lead down the road, particularly if made compatible with other mods. Voxel graphics with enemies having more than just 8 degrees of freedom, smoother animations etc. Take the better parts of Brutal Doom (specifically enemy behaviour) on top and I can visualise a perfect updated version of Doom existing out there.
> it's really difficult to make an engaging thumbnail image
And you succeeded beautifully!
Voxel H-Doom when, authors?
I'm kidding. Who even cares about H-Doom? We need Voxel Natural Needs mod.
Wow.. someone made Doom 1 with 3D without going into uncanny valley. Heck I didn't even know the Doom engine could support Voxels.
The source code for Doom has been available for years so you can just build upon the original engine to provide that feature.
gzdoom and delphidoom supports voxels... however voxeldoom is a gzdoom exclusive for now
gzdoom supports voxels.... not id tech 1.... Goodluck trying to run this in dos....
Good job
The reason this works as well as it does is that the majority of the sprites were photographed from physical models, so the other angles from which the voxels are being viewed are going to look familiar enough anyway that they'll look right.
Wow, this is really cool. But somehow, you don't notice it all the time, and when you do, you think... Hmm do i prefer 2D or voxel?
Great video by the way. Even though it's short.
Voxel looks closer to Pixely sprites but I'd rather see 2D or low-poly (for Quake and polygonal 3D FPS).
@@ikagura Yeah, the pixely look is nice
Its because of the low frame animations
@@primus711 it's very authentic yeah
With Doom ports, you are able to do many things that you weren't able to do with classic Doom (i.e. jump, crouch, etc.).
One of the many things you can do, is aim up and down: a great thing, that can make you turn off the autoaim.
This is one of the situations where voxels come handy: if you're on a ledge, there are enemies right down that ledge, and you look down, in 2d you'll see them like cardboard cut-outs. If they're too close to the ledge, you may not even see them, due to them having no depth. With voxels, this issue is solved: look down, and you'll see the 3d models in all their glory!
A really good mod!
Such a good stuff! I really enjoyed the video and the mod idea. Thank you!
2:26 They really did a good job. Oh my.
What a stunning piece of work. All the more so because it's so subtle
This mod plus a voxel weapon pack? VR Doom might actually be a lot of fun to play!
It is!
Chello is getting the recognition he deserved. I watched his work in progress from his CZcams channel and the hard work putting into it, pixel by pixel.
This not only adds to the original graphics while staying faithful, it's also an interesting new style in itself that I haven't seen anywhere else. I mean enemy 3D models that have only 8 directions they can face. The conscious decision to remove fidelity in certain aspects can really add some character.
That is beautiful work! Just amazing.
It was only a matter time. I've been tracking this mods progress through videos.
I saw this a while ago. It's really well done!
This is amazing. I can't imagine the work that must have went into this. Very impressive
I love how the cyberdemon looks when it shoots and you're strafing around it.
Brilliant work here. Thank you to all involved
It really does look incredible! Thanks for the vid
To be fair, the sprites were made by essentially bit crushing photos of models. So the different angles probably fit together better than freehand sprites would.
Nice to see a few more regular DMMadnesses, very much appreciated
Suuuper interesting and actually looks good! Thank you for sharing that with us, big doom fan
Yes. Been waiting for coverage on this project!
Such a cool mod.
honestly, i wonder if the Mod creator realized what type of "Pandora's box" he had just opened up? I mean imagine how many other Modders will look at this framework, and start iterating on it. How insane would it be to see something like Brutal Doom voxelized? Or even mods that are in that sort of "in-between" of being the normal Doom style and almost having a Voxelistic look. If more modders pick up on this . . . it'll be real fuckin' wild.
I've been watching the progress of this mod for a while and it's pretty kickass!
Best! I have been waiting for this mod completed for years!
I think this is how I would envision an official HD remake for classic doom.
Awesome! Now we need Voxel Brutal Doom!
My eyes did a backflip when you walked AROUND the enemy corpses. That’s incredible.
it really is surprising how well the sprites turn into a 3D model and that's in no small part on Cheello's part. An amazing job here, the first pile of guts I passed on E1M1 was magical
I thought it was 2D until I looked closer. Although when you walked past a corpse and it didn't spin around to face you my brain broke slightly. Seeing a Doom corpse from other angles is slightly terrifying somehow.
FINALLY: a 3D mod that isn't shit.
Now we need Natural Needs mod adapted for Voxel Doom.
Since 2003 or so I have been following the many attempts of force-feeding 3d monster models into Doom. This is one here is finally convincing. Keep it up!
Cheello definitely deserves credit for his hardwork on the voxels..
This is an incredible addition to the Doom Classics.
I can definitely see more assets being voxelized and more enemy types, and likely first person view in voxels.
And maybe in the near future full voxel based maps.
It's rare to see someone commit real care and dedication to replicating, transposing or enhancing work in any medium. It's a combination of absurd attention to detail while also using imagination to fill in the blanks left by some of the single-rotation sprites. Massive respect
I've been following the mod's creator content and I'm always delighted. As someone who's been playing Doom (1993) for years, I've always had the same mixed feelings with Doom 3D remakes where it just doesn't feel right, however, with modern hardware and wide screens, the sprites now also look weird so I was in that place where I wished there was an alternative to sprites but never liked any of the alternatives.
The problem with a lot of 3D remakes and mods is that it has a mix of aesthetics that just doesn't feel right. If you have just some of the models look 3D but the maps' textures still look like the original, it just doesn't mesh, and if you try to remake the whole thing, you can make it look somewhat better, but it doesn't feel right to have a game that plays like 1993's Doom with modern graphics. The best way could have been to make a proper remake, similar to what Black Mesa did with Half-Life, and in a way, that's Doom 2016 with the only difference being that it's completely new maps.
This voxel mod is just perfect. It keeps the original aesthetic, doesn't feel out of place, fits seamlessly with the maps, the models move right and feel right... hell, there are some moments where if you paused it, people wouldn't even notice they're not sprites; but then you also have the volume of a 3D model and looking at the models from any direction it's a great way to replay this game. I absolutely love it.
Perfect succinct summary!
oh wow that baron death animation is impressive, yeah I always wondered what I was looking at too lol
imagine project brutality animations done like this
Looks really good! Like no shit! As you said, the fact that the original animations are preserved is a nice touch! Adds a lot of extra depth to the characters.
whoa.. that does look great!
Dude this is amazing, thanks so much for making us aware of it!!
Oh man, I love the new outro! You're evolving!
>talks about new models
>tries to showcase them in a dark level
Genius, Icarus. Pure genius.
I like this mod because while the monsters are alive and while in motion, it's very hard to realize that you're looking at 3D models, but once they're dead and dropped, their 3D nature makes them blend into the map and slide them into the territory of "my canvas of violence". all in all, gj
The music at the start got me wheezing
So glad you covered this! This is a genuine advancement in graphical fidelity without taking it way too far for no reason.
I'm gonna be honest my brain didn't even know it was voxel until I paid attention
Fantastic work, kudos to the maker, they made this look perfectly.
Best 3D mod for Doom next to Quake
I’m smacking my head with that pure sense of “my god, it’s so obvious, why didn’t anyone do this before?”
I mean obviously this gonna look swag, blood proved that back in 1997, but this mod takes it to another level
Voxel DOOM is how I saw DOOM in my head as a child, I need to play this.
Now we need Brutal Voxel Doom
that looks really fantastic
Wow! That's so nice I didn't even realise the difference for a good while
This is absolutely amazing. The level of accuracy is astounding, you can't even tell at a glance that it's actually 3D, it's just that good.
Now if only someone could bash it together with Hideous Destructor... Wouldn't it be a dream come true to have accurate 3D hitboxes?
I can't wait to try this in VR and see what it looks like with the added 3D depth in the voxel models!
This is stunning and brilliant. I never thought someone can make a pleasant 3D replacement for the original sprites, but here we are!
Looks amazing.
Wow! Very impressed by the accuracy to the original models! I never expected that voxel enemies in doom could look good
We got voxel Blood and now voxel Doom! Hopefully, one day, we might be able to experience Bloom in voxel glory as well!
This is gorgeous, especially in motion. In stills, there's some uncanniness, but like, when you're just moving around, it just looks like Doom as you'd expect, just without omnidirectional billboards, which is really quite satisfying.
Probably the only thing that would be cooler is if the weapons were also in voxels, so they move in 3D when you bob around.
At a glance, you can barely tell
YES IM ABOUT TO PLAY THIS IN VR!!
I have been waiting for this 🤩
This is so impressive, combining this with the VR mod is insanely good.
Looks like I'm playing through Doom again tonight!
now all we need is voxel brutal doom
These honestly look amazing! It would be incredible if he could voxel-ize all the extra frames from smooth doom. But I understand that that would be a gargantuan effort.
Great showcase! You did a good job making sure all the important elements got some showtime. Was really looking forward to seeing the spider mastermind and you delivered marvelously!
And I think it would be fantastic to see a few more frames of animation in between
This dude needs to get paid for this mod Amazing.
This is the best 3D-ification of the good old Doom.
Finally i can admire in all the glory those Cyberdemon asscheeks in 3D!
This definitely rocks and is absolutely worth trying!
Holy Crap!! I just played this using my stereoscopic 3d vision monitor! It's INCREDIBLE! The detail just pops!!
