    If you work with OMS be careful. They may be odorless but their fumes are not non-toxic. Take a little container with a lid and put a cotton ball or something similar inside, and soak that thing with OMS. You can rub your brush on that and then close the lid again right away. Do not just use a bottle of OMS or dump a bunch of it in a cup, as it will evaporate and it is very unhealthy. Breathing in OMS can lead to irreversible memory impairment and nerve damage, applied to the skin it is an irritant, all the problems that are typically associated with solvent use. A less toxic alternative is Zest-it Pencil Blend, which you can order online or to simply, as Echo suggested, use rubbing alcohol.

      I’ve had trouble with it and also oil and acrylic paints, they make my chest feel a bit tight so now if I use them, I wear a mask with A1 filters. 3M do some comfortable ones, but I rarely use things that need it cos it’s still annoying. Air purifiers aren’t for such tiny particles unless they’re next level expensive/industrial standards cos the usual ones are for bigger particles in dust, mites etc. I’m not even asthmatic, but probably autistic. I found so little info, but read of a woman who’d had a very bad reaction and would have had less issues if the mineral spirits had had an odour - her doctor said the lack of it let the toxic stuff into her bloodstream more easily.

      Rubbing alcohol (IPA) and fingernail polish remover (acetone and/or ethyl acetate) also produce hazardous fumes that can cause serious damage with extended exposure. Not to mention all 3 are flammable. Please be safe people!

    In the 1980s I had "Paint With Water" books, where you would see, on the picture, these sort of dots and lines of pale color already put there. If you painted it with water, it would spread it around to fill the space. When I grew up, I found aquarelle pencils and crayons, which basically do the same thing - draw the line, then paint it with water. I LOVED them. I don't have any with me at the moment, but I was always so excited to buy a huge box with as many colors as possible, and they were expensive, but they got beautiful results. I wasn't very good at drawing with pastels, but I liked what I could do with the waterpaint crayons and pencils.

    Also, if using oms or having a bottle of isopropyl alcohol/nail polish remover/etc isn't an option, colorless blender alcohol markers are a great alternative. Especially if you want to travel with your supplies. I just purchase the cheapest ones I can find and keep a couple with my pencils. I have them for different color groups as the only real down side is the nib does stain

    • @angeladonoghue9010

      I was just scrolling down to see if anyone mentioned colorless blender alcohol markers. I just scribble mine on a piece of scrap paper off to the side between color groups. Yeah, the nib gets pretty funky looking, but if you make sure there's no pigment left on it before you move on to another area then you're still ok.

    A few of my favorite art channels is drawholic and Artology and how they're able to get the results of what they draw with COLORED PENCILS and other traditional supplies vs just using digital art should be thoroughly studied. The fact that both channels were able to get a thoroughly detailed Sonic the Hedgehog drawing complete with making it look like they individually drew every hair/quill on that hedgehog is incredible. They've also drawn/colored in Toothless very detailed, the Iron Spider Suit like....GOD With COLORED PENCILS. Blows my mind what you can do with em.

    • @Kyosumari
      @Kyosumari Před rokem +4

      I understand the sentiment you have with the "should be studied" comment but i can't help but giggle because that's what the study of art IS, so in a way, it already is being studied -- by the artists and anyone else who feels inspired by their work on a technical level.

    Oh wow. This is incredibly useful. I'm somewhat new to colored pencils, but my secret is spray fix. I lightly mist the drawing with fixative, let it dry, than add another layer of colored pencil. The spray helps it both blend and make the colors pop, especially white. With spray fixative you can even draw a completely black space, spray with fix, than draw over the black with white colored pencil.

    If you use watercolor paper, you can use water and paper won' t bend at all. -Especially if you stretch it first aka tape it down and go over with wet brush and then let it dry. Also there is that one way to let colored pencils to soak up in a hot water first. -It does some pretty amazing to some of the colored pencils. Colors come deeper. ( To watercolor ones I don't recommend it. ) Also telling watercolor from colored pencil apart is that they usually are marked with a tiny brush symbol. One way to make colored pencil coloring smooth is to use burnisher pencil. - and it is definetelly on the non-toxic, non-chemical side. ^^ With chemicals you should remember to use them in well ventilated areas and/or use proper mask. They are also flammable. I probably do not need to say nothing about that they can use headache, naucea and dizzinyess, drowsiness etc. Am someone who gets that heachace from nails polish and nail polish removers too. I would not recommend them for small children to use. Like no offence or anything, those materials just are that toxic and harmful to health.

    Thank you for the tips on the water color pencils. This is something that they never taught us when I was taking art in school. If you are using nail polish remover, be sure to use plenty of ventilation. The Acetone in it will damage your kidneys. The alcohol is also called denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol had a bit of a different chemical composition.

      Acetone inhalation is only really dangerous in high amounts or for prolonged periods. However, still using in a ventilated area and/ or just using a small amount at a time of any of these kind of solvents is probably recommended. We used acetone all the time for cleaning when I was in the chem lab and were never warned about kidney damage. Unless you're drinking it you should be ok.

      I usually buy non acetone nail polish remover, however that’s also because when fixing up or customizing dolls made of vinyl, acetone can ruin the vinyl.

    Great tip! I just bought a quart of 90% alcohol for using with essential oils and had no idea what else it is good for. Thanks!

    there are oil based pencils, wax based pencils, a few that are both and watercolour pencils, you can get the same look that you get with solvents if you use a lot of layers and a smooth paper. the oil based pencils are the harder ones usually, the wax are the soft ones.

    Great tips, thank you. I do prefer a blending pencil though as there is no odour or risk of spillage (I am clumsy so panic when using blending fluid that it may end up all my carpet!!)
