We treat marriage like a job, except you can quit it and expect your former provider to keep paying you a salary so long as you don't take a permanent contract elsewhere. They can't afford to both be in med school and pay for a daycare so the woman becomes a stay at home mom. They have 3 kids and 10 years down the road they get divorced. She sacrificed her career for kids so he could continue. In this case alimony is perfectly fine, but it should be temporary.

Good friend of mine went through divorce. Their son wanted to live with his dad. He was told by her lawyer if he paid child support for both kids the son could stay with him. When the son got old enough to choose the dad went back to court and asked for child support. She was really , really pissed. He didn’t get that much but he had paid support for two children to her for years, principal of it.

Yeah, they didn’t say anything for decades. They didn’t help fix the system when it was in their favor, and now that the system might actually hurt them, they are crying as if this problem is a new one.
Men have been getting screwed in family courts, and they didn’t care, men have been complaining about this for decades, and they didn’t care, we have had groups and organizations founded on trying to solve this problem, and they didn’t care.
The worst part is that they don’t even want equality, they don’t want to fix the system, they just want to get it back to the point where it works for them. Instead of saying, “hey, divorce is extremely unfair to the party that makes the most dough, we really need to solve this”, they said, “this is unfair to women, men, you can go back to the system that screws you over, but us women are being treated unfairly”. It wouldn’t get to me if she simply said, “I didn’t focus on this problem because it wasn’t mine, but now that I know how bad it is, we need to solve this”, but she doesn’t even want to do that.

I never felt that these divorce settlements make sense. They're usually based on emotional baggage, not calculated damages. Without a prenup, there's very little chance of each party getting treated "fairly."

@@surpent1360 i think there is a very good argument to way alimony can be critically useful/helpful. Because not having a home or job can be scary when you want to leave your abusive spouse. It was a very game changing law when back in the day, for the wives to stay at home is mandatory. Therefor they can't even have a safety net to land on if the marriage is over.
@@mameng666 I definitely see your point and agree that in it's time it was extremely important and still can be to a degree, however I think it is counter productive to society in many instances. Give people who leave their spouse who had been supporting them a window of support financially. You got x amount of time in which to find a job and a place to live, I would be fine with that, but to say that your ex is now responsible to maintain your quality of living until you get remarried is insane.

When I met my children’s mother, she hadn’t even graduated HS. I had, so I was capable of achieving a higher wage. So after we had our two children, I told her working for minimum wage wouldn’t benefit the family. It would be better for her to further her education so that she can become more marketable. Paid everything for years up from her GED into her Bachelors degree. Even after I began pursuing my degree as well. She graduated before me and started working making more money than me. First thing out of her friend’s mouths, even knowing all the context, was what am I doing to support the household? She shouldn’t have to take care of me and the kids while I finish my degree and increase my own marketability. Women have toxic ideologies out here. Shit is crazy.

You shouldn't get to take someone's wealth because your union didn't last.
The only way it should go that way is if you've sacrificed your own employment in order to support your partner's success, for example my family member doesn't 'work' but does do all the admin for her husband's business so they dont have to pay someone to do it.
And if children are involved they should be supported. Adults should pay for themselves
