The RIDICULOUSLY expensive cost of living in Nome, Alaska (you won't believe how much water costs)

- This week dad (Steve Riedel) joins me and Alex to show you just how expensive it is to live in Nome! We shop for groceries, beer, vehicles, utilities, and other regular goods and services and compare those prices to those you might find in a big city like Seattle, Washington.
Alaska consistently ranks at the top of the list of highest-cost of living states in the US because of its extreme weather, lack of infrastructure, remoteness, and low population density. However, Alaska is divided even further between those who live on the road system that is connected to Canada and the US, and those who don't. And for those places aren't connected to the road, like Nome, the costs of local goods and services can make your jaw drop.

Alaska. I’ve been to Hawaii it doesn’t seem that much more than New Jersey. Except gas and milk. That was a lot in Hawaii. Average items were only slightly more.
Maui Hawaii. Which might not be bad compared to other areas in Hawaii.
Emily ur dad looks like a hobo no offense but i see it on ur show he's a scorn like Chris Kelly... But i know all about those prices Boston and everywhere else is suffering
My nexct door neighbor works exclusively in Alaska as a contractor. He owns a shed up there somewhere. He stores all his equipment there. Brings all his crew up from Florida with him. They make almost 3x what they can make doing the same work here in florida. It does cost more to live there though, but they mostly sleep in the building he has. They also bring a truckload of supplies from Florida so they dont have to buy stuff like Water at $10 a bottle. Doing that allows him to work 2 - 3 months up there, then come home for a month then back again. He only works about 8 months a year and takes home over double what he would make here after all the bills are paid.
Smart man. That's the way to do it.
Damn that's crazy
He drives there an back?

8 months a year work in middle of nowhere ? What kind life is that ? No life !
@@dannydanny1034 An ideal life for a huge number of people who are sick of living in the overpopulated warrens we call cities.
Double or triple pay for the same work, with the ability to retire from needing full time work at 40 with a nice nest egg and live the rest of your life at your own pace.
That's why a lot of the people still live off the land. Seeing relatives post the cost of living of just detergent is insane. Thank you for bringing awareness 🙌🏽
maybe thats why golds 2 grand an oz !
@Don’t worry about it lmfao let him be why judge over something so innocent
@Don’t worry about it why do you judge, stay off the internet
@Don’t worry about it No, I am going to accept that, today, I will encounter insolence, ingratitude, disloyalty, selfishness, and ill-will, all due to the offenders ignorance of the nature of good and evil.
You may continue to judge people if you want, but it only shows them your foolishness, rather then your intended goal.
I was thinking this too. There is alot of big game hunting and other resources in Alaska, if you know what you're doing. These people do not look like they would have a clue. They would have go be part of a larger community or family to be taught how to live off the land.
I loved the part where your dad said he loaned you a down filled jacket he'd bought for $20 and it disappeared. I am a dad with two grown daughters and many an item was "loaned" and disappeared. Your dad obviously loves you very much.
I "loaned" my son my very expensive leather jacket one evening. Next day I asked him for it and he admitted he left it on the back of a chair in a bar when he left as he forgot about it. $500 down the drain.
This explains a lot. I used to play video games about a decade ago, and I met this girl online that shared several interests with me. I really should have taken her up on the offer to go up there in the off season and keep her warm. She warned me about the economy. But the thing I remember most about the way she described her little Coastal village in Alaska, was that it was a small Drinking Village, with a Fishing Problem. Databyter
That actually sounds really nice man, glad you met someone like that, no one really know until they do. but by time you do it’s to late.
I could survive there.. being a master at my baiting job.🤣🤣
No but I usual out fish anyone around.. why nobody wants to go with.. sad huh!?!
Yep what she meant to say of course it was a small drinking village with a fishing problem. You did the right thing. Yep there's a reason why a good share of people there live in AK & especially if they're not natives.
I thought 20 dollars for reindeer sausage and country spuds in 82 was bad . I was black topping for 1.75 an hr . 3 days before in midwest .
Can you please explain why people "sign" their comments? Do you think you are constantly saying something so profound that future people are going to steal it?
As a truck driver I have this to say. The cost to hire a semi truck to drive to Alaska ranges from $15,000 to $30,000 depending on what the commodity is and how far it travels.

Back in the '80s, I was getting constant telemarketing calls. They would even leave messages on my answering machine.
I finally had my GF record a new message on my machine that went "Thank you for calling the Nome Alaska State Park. Please leave a message." Keep in mind, we paid long distance charges back then, and a call to Alaska was something like $5.00 a minute. People could not hand up fast enough lol.

I was stationed at Ft. Rich, then came back and eventually retired there. If you live in a big town, things can be much less. Much of the high prices are a residue of the "Pipeline days". A lot of big money and high paying jobs, and peoples greed, eventually caused things to become more expensive.
The later part of my career I was in an aviation unit, and been all over Alaska. Things cost a lot the further in the bush you go. But prices seem to still end up higher. Also, when the pipeline and oil began to flow, someone with insight, started the "Dividend" and made it such that the residents could share in the oil profits.
There is so much to appreciate about Alaska. That was why I came back and eventually retired here.
Huge fan of Bering Sea Gold! Thanks for the video! really puts things in perspective and definitely makes me feel more submersed in show. I really had no clue expenses are that high, I feel you guys now when you guys say "we're finally making money!" 😂 Good luck and hopefully see you on the Bearing Sea tide in the future!
According to people that live in Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, etc., Amazon Prime is a way of life in Alaska. There is no next day or two day shipping, but they can purchase goods at reasonable prices without paying for extra shipping costs. It may take three or four weeks for an overnight package to arrive, but they were at least able to purchase items at regular market value. They certainly have to plan ahead, however.
I live out a ways and switched over to online ordering only. My monthly outflow of cash has been cut by a lot . I used to budget 1200 a month for local purchases. Now it’s below 400. Huge savings
I was wondering if Amazon prime would help there.🤔
Depends on what’s being shipped, in Anchorage most stuff I ordered wasn’t covered by Prime. Unless somethings been changed in the last 5 years or so.
Honestly I don't know about Anchorage as I didn't visit there. I travelled to the other locations about 2 years ago and it's quite possible anything and everything has changed even for those places. Challenging to be sure.
Shit if we can get something shipped half the time it says they can’t shit up here to alaska
I'm absolutely shocked at the high food and clothing cost. In Ohio 48 bottles of water 16.9 oz per bottle. The entire case at Costco is roughly $ 2.50 cent. The Snickers bars would be half of what was mentioned. I couldn't afford to live there. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly. And they can afford to live there. And they are whining about it.

@@Gdfsandoz oh. I wonder what their next video of unknown facts will be. It’s cold in Alaska! 🥶
On the bright side, if things are cheap and people rushing into Alaska, indigenous Native Alaskan people would become tiny marginalized minority on their own beloved motherland, and end up in small reservations just like the lower 48 States. Just saying.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I worked in Alaska twice for a few months each time, so I have developed an interest in the state and it's lifestyle/way of life.

I’ve experienced this first hand while inland dredging the Kougarok River. I remember fuel at $5/gal in 2017, it’s probably
7 or 8 now. The Hanson’s Safeway and Subway sandwiches kept me alive. I lost 25 lbs in 8 weeks living in the bush gold dredging. I will say this, the experience: glassing humpback grizzly the size of a Volkswagen, catching an Arctic char. Those memories will last a lifetime. The locals laugh at us gold miners especially at the only hardware store I town. They asked “did you get a photo off the plane, wait til ya leave, you’ll likely never be back”.
I just filled up in Fairbanks at $4.14 a Gallon!
@@ak_downrange_threat7251 Surprised it’s that low. I experienced Gangstalking in Nome as well which is strange considering it’s population is roughly 4,900. I’ve abandoned all my mining gear, that place is a financial sinkhole
I didnt knew you had a channel, always watched the show, love your work Emily
Makes a ton of sense when you think about it, but myself not being an Alaskan, I’ve never thought about it haha. Super enlightening video, absolutely insane prices. I’ve seen a lot of people comment how living off the land is how people get by, and major respect for you if that’s what you do. As an urban/suburban troglodyte however, I am very good on that. Would love to visit one day however, summers look beautiful.
I remember when the subway came to Nome;; the entire town was off the rails in excitement making me realize how spoiled we all are to have most of what we want anytime we want it. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, I absolutely love Nome, AK.
Wasn’t there a lot of alien shit there ??
I live in Redford, Mi 👋
I have a cousin that lives in Homer
From Michigan, we attended a wedding in Nome in 2005. Breakfast at the local place was about $12. Subway was about $9 for a footlong, about double of the lower 48 but saved us a ton of money during the stay. Nome beer prices reminds me of Costco in Maui HI -- anything of weight will be double!
Why would anyone move there? If its cold, the food prices suck, and it is filled with masochists, why would anyone move there?

It's ironic that in a place with so much snow, the price of water is so ridiculously expensive.
Ikr you’re surrounded by water lol
Maybe the snow is contaminated with micro bits of plastic, like everywhere else.
Every snowflake starts with a speck of dust. The ice crystals form around something floating in the air. So it probably would be cleaner than something in your local Creek but it might be loaded with things as far away as Japan's fukushima.
Collect your own water EZ
snow doesn't equal drinking water...neither does salt water. we probably made it even and it still costs us more. you have to pay every person who touches that and every vehicle it's on. that equals 40$ water. this isn't new info 🤣

I lived on Oahu for a while, and it was the same vis-a-vis eating out/cooking at home. It was often cheaper to just eat in the restaurants where the locals eat, because groceries are so expensive.
Totally! If you're eating ramen or something obviously it's cheaper to shop but if you want to cook a cut of meat and fresh veggies and a beer it's comparable

My entire family is from Nome or King island and this comment section is hilarious 😂. The majority of all grocery store items are shipped by plane year round and the summer months are incredible short compared to other places around the world. My entire family is full of highly experienced hunters that provides subsistence for the elderly members and the food supply carries them through the year. A person could potentially survive the entire winter with the numerous varieties of berries available around the lands during the summer months. Long story short this video is covering the convenience of standard living for those people who don't know how to live off the land.
Unless you live on the Yukon where fishing is shut down even for subsistence. It is becoming harder to live off the land and it depends on where you live. The interior of Alaska where I live is much harder to live off of. When I lived in SE AK it was easy, and even on the YK delta where I was for two years it was easier than the interior.
Yeah they want a condo in the middle of nowhere and expect Uber eats to be available like Jimmy John's lol
Do you know how subsistence hunting and fishing permits work? From my reading, it is very hard to get subsistence hunting rights, even if you live in a rural area. It may be different for native Alaskans, I don’t know.
I was looking at the numbers for taking one moose a season, and the costs come out to well over $1k, if not over $2k, most of it going to the state as permit and harvesting fees.
I somehow doubt that $1k-$2k per animal would control food costs much for people in Nome. Please let me know if I am overlooking something.
What happened in the movie the 4th kind ?

I even got an electric lawnmower so I won`t have to mess with gas and I can charge it with the sun if I need to and bought 12 volt DC cookers just in case. So now no matter what nobody can turn off my power, stop me from cooking, or mowing my yard because I have sun power for the basics, even a small fridge and a freezer.
Dude these prices blow my MIND! How is it SO SO expensive!
Few years ago building a plant outside of alamagordo me and some friends were horrified at the price of things. I think milk was 10.00. Having breakfast at some diner that would normally cost under 10.00 would easily come out to 40 50 dollars.
While I was over there my parents came to my home city to visit and after I told my dad about prices on their way back to Pennsylvania they stopped w the bed of truck full of groceries and snacks. Guaranteed that whole trip to Sam's that was about 100 would easily cost 1000 where I was working at.

I worked all over the Yukon - Kuskokwim Delta for about 5 years and I saw that prices really jumped at the smaller villages I flew in to. The fact is that anything which is fresh and perishable has to be flown in, hence the expense. Go to one more distribution point and the expense is amplified by the inclusion of a third transport operation to bring it from the hub (Bethel, Nome, Barrow...) to the small village of perhaps 100-200 people with one store to provide for their needs...
makes sense though, seems like its the cost to live far away from where all of the items are manufactured or grown.
Did you ever eat at the Greek restaurant? It was owned by my family 😄
I have always liked you Emily..... Good you you I will Support. Keep going!!!!!!
Emily, I sure hope your Dad get on & stays on Meds, I take mine & all the people around me have a better life for it. Best to your Pops
Steve seems a lot less crazy here, more funny, and that's a good thing! I'm sure he plays it up for the show.
I was stationed in Hawaii in the 90’s so I know exactly what y’all are talking about. Hawaii is probably the most expensive state to live in. The islands are actually closer to Japan than the mainland. I had a full time night/weekend job outside of my military career just to survive there. My daycare was $250 a week per child(I had 2) and my ex-wife didn’t have to pay child support so I was broke the entire 4 years there. Eating out in Hawaii was a luxury.
Similar story here. I was there in the early 80s and you had to live on the cheap. Thought a trip to Sizzlers was a big deal.
4 hours to the mainland or 10 hours to Japan, from Honolulu. you may want to invest in a map.
Daycare in Vancouver Canada is 2 500 to 3000 a month per child, gallon of organic milk is 15 pack of cigarettes is almost 20 gallon of gas is 8 to 10 $
@@paulcoffey5995 wait what? you might want to invest in a watch? hawaii to los angeles is 2,479 miles, Hawaii to Japan is 4,108, if you fly 500mph how many hours to LA? 5 right? and if you fly 500mph miles to japan? 8.. clearly doesnt take over half as long to fly to hawaii as it does LA, or 6 more hours, in fact it's significantly less than twice as long, or just 3 more hours.. new watch for christmas?
@@mikelaatsful $8 to $10 per LITER, states use gallons.. so 3.7 liters per gallon, at $9 a L thats $2.47 a G.. c'mon you guys calculators broke?
I grew up in Fairbanks, where in 1960, gasoline was about $5 a gallon. One year an entrepreneur fixed that problem, he brought in his own gas over the Alcan highway. He took all the business at $1.00 a gallon! A few months later, his station was firebombed and THAT was the end of THAT.
Cool show. I enjoy seeing Nome without the Discovery channel filters and editing.
“No place for the man to go in nome except up”lol.. I don’t know who you guys are but this was entertaining . Aloha from Hawaii
This video will open peopleseyes to the cost of living there. HELL YA have your Dad on more often
That’s a smart man he knew what bud light was all about 😂😂
I lived in Anchorage Alaska from 1995-2018 n had a high paying job as an RN in a Burn Unit n flight nurse. My husband had a government job.We had many friends that did fishing for a living n would get all the fish n Crabs we wanted for free n have a big freezer full. Summer had a very large garden. We were lucky I guess. We also had a condo in Kawai. Now retired in Washington DC.
$450 for 50 Mbps is the most insane thing that I've seen in a VERY long time!
$450 /mo for that speed is CRAZY expensive!! I am in Dallas and I pay $75 /mo for 500mb/s up and down. (500/500)
@@mjdallas Here in the ATL I pay $50 for 100 mb/s.
61 euros for 600/600, in Spain, Europe
The weather up there is horrendous, it's probably one of the most expensive places to live on earth, and there's hardly any opportunities for jobs or anything else.
Blows my mind that people live there. Respect.
Dude -did you even read your own post? Your making yourself out to be a real pansy.
Bahaha you know nothing of Alaska then 🤣😂🤣😂 we have lots of jobs it really depends your location ! And the weather really isn’t all that bad 🤣😂🤣 I live it daily summer is awesome fishing season on the Kenai is the best !
@Jimjimmyjames Smith quite a bit actually !
Are you talking to us from the tunnel?
@@MegaMeaty you need some budlight
Love your dad lol
when i worked in Barrow Alaska, i worked for the ac store , it cost over two dollars per lb to get my fright by air, the cost of electric for the store was supper high, wages for store employee's was over 18 dollars a hour in 2005 add all that up and be grateful you can get fresh food there at all.
The prices are crazy. I was complaining about Los Angeles being expensive.
LA is expensive though in comparison to 5 years ago; double would you say?
Bro....me and my girl took a vacation to LA and couldn't believe the cost of everything!!
You and a few friends should get to gether and have a community garden where everybody pitches in and grows a pre agreed amount of fruit and vegetables,it'll be hit and miss at first but you will eventually figure out what will grow in Nome and all you need is a cold rroom to store it all over the winter
It's very hard to grow here I think! Greenhouses and high tunnels are exceptionally popular in southcentral Alaska but not so much up here...
🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷
@@TheEmilyRiedel Communities in Norway of the same latitude do grow potatoes, and Cole crops, but they also have the North Atlantic current to warm their summers up a bit. Bethel, despite permafrost, does grow crops with high tunnels.

Community gardens never really pan out in the long run
I've never watched "Bering sea gold" so I didn't know this family...I hope to be able to watch more though.
Hearing those prices made me "clutch my pearls!"
I was there in 199O and drove snowmobiles to Glacier Creek. My gracious host was married to an indigenous native Inuit Alaskan and was trying to interest people in a Bering Land Bridge to Russia. I forget his name.. Their home was raised off of the frozen tundra permafrost on a steel pipe matrix foundation like they also use in Yellowknife, Canada and Barrow, Alaska.
They owned a bunch of sled dogs and snowmobiles.
At that time there were people living in gold panning shacks on the Bering Sea.
My teacher in college...and this was waaay back in the 80's told me she had lived in Alaska for 5 years and she told us then it was very expensive due to everything having to be shipped in.
Hawaii is the same
Friend of mine's oldest sister was a teacher in Alaska for 4 years. She answered one of those "Come up here to Alaska and teach and you'll make a fortune" ads in the back of a teacher's magazine. This was around 1980, and she was making $36K a year...like 3 times what she was making in Texas. She thought she could live on what she was making here up there, come back in 4 years and have enough to buy a house and some land outright. She came back 4 years later totally broke.
Steve's pizza receipt makes wayyy more sense now!!!!! holy cow stuffs expensive up there, I'm in Toronto and I take it for granted that a 18 pack of water is $2.50 Canadian LOL.
I lived in nome in 1981 and it was expensive then. I cant even imagine now. I would love to visit again❤
OMG! The dog is soooo beautiful....your eyes too
I found this informative and funny, go Steve!.
Thanks Clay! Glad you enjoyed watching dad he cracked us up at the store
I live in Scotland and I’m absolutely shocked, here in the UK some of those items are a quarter of the price!! Thank you for making this vid 😊
I live in Pompey and can't believe American ice-cream is cheaper here than it is there. Och I tha noo Jimmy, sorry 😶
and it probably cost quarter of the price to get it delivered...... i get the prices are high but also don't forget stock doesn't just magically appear! 😁
@@republicofcasuals Avocados are grown in California. I can buy one in the UK for 65p/85c and it has to be shipped across the Atlantic. £3.38/$4.49 is a huge ripoff even accounting for transport.
Even in Fairbanks, Alaska a kilo of strawberries is $11.50! It's crazy.
supply and demand. Basic stuff. Higher demand means a higher cost. If this wasn't true, and all prices were just pulled out of thin air, you'd end up with massive shortages or a bunch of unused stock.
We live in southern Ontario Canada, and these prices are comparable to what we pay here, (except for the water, and oil change.)
The price of living in a place with little to no infrastructure. The one place I know you can definitely save a lot of cash is by getting Starlink for your internet...I believe it's 99 a month for 100mbps up and down with no cap.
I wonder if it would work in Anchorage? I will check it out:)
@@Jacqueline_R I believe it's invite only still and it only works in certain longitudes or latitudes.
Do they still mine for gold in Nome. My best friend throughout Middle school's family mined there
Painful reality: if the prices were not high then no one would deliver goods that far.
The shippers are shipping loads that are too small. If they had giant shiploads of stuff delivered to Nome the cost per item would be much less.
Well, here in Taiwan, things in COSTCO are almost inexpensive as in the US. But you may buy imported things even cheaper in the local Carrefour that match pretty much the prices of local Taiwanese produce. This is why I also consider these Alaskan prices so ridiculous, too. I really would like to understand why. Could it be the current cargo ship crisis and lack of trucks for distribution?
@@beringstraitrailway yes, but that may be manageable with fewer trips and bigger cargo ships.
Wow, I thought I had an idea of how expensive groceries could be in the more rural parts of Alaska. I did not. That bottled water was at a minimum 4 times the amount I've ever paid. Hey Ben & Jerry's lover.... I can dig it. However I had to give it up. Ben & Jerry's political douchebaggery is too expensive for me even in the lower 48. Actually I think that's the name of their new flavor coming out sometime next month, Political Douchebaggery.
3:30 omg he knew about Bud Light before Dylan 😂😂
I work at SeaTac airport. We service about 50 flights to Alaska a day I think. They are the heaviest flights cause lots of Alaskans come to Seattle to shop and bring stuff back.
As far as the internet goes....keep an eye on Starlink. They stopped the beta testing. They launch about 60+ satellites a months. They are designed with the rural areas in mind. It's about $99 a month.
Starlink is very popular among off-grid homesteading people which in most cases are located in very rural areas.
How much data is available through Starlink?
@@indigenous31617 From all the materials I've received from them, the data is unlimited, at roughly 100 mbps speeds, although that might be a bit lower in polar areas. I didn't want to pay $500 for the dish though, so there's a high upfront cost. After that it's currently $99/month but likely to change (hopefully go down as they scale up).
@@xplorethings my broadband is $12/month ! 10 mbps , more than enough
I have been on the list since Feb. I hope I hear something soon. Hughesnet sucks, but its the only game in town for us.
