    I had the distinct honor of growing up with that music. I saw Buddy Holly in Milwaukee just before his plane crash. Three friends all taken before their time, Gene, Buddy & Eddie Cochran.

    Totally agree. This was thought to be pretty far 'out there', but in reality it was harmless, even virtuous by todays standards. It was an innocent, fun time!
    I miss these times--I was just a kid but still remember it fondly.

    Jerry Lee Merritt was the lead guitarist, I think Gene's last. When Gene left Japan a day early Jerry took his place and played as Gene and no one knew. He always laughed about that. I met and worked with Jerry in his Ghost Town Recording Studio in Yakima, Wa a few years back. If you do a search for him you can see him in later years doing a show in England. He passed away a few years back. He wrot 'SheShe Little Sheila' for Gene and I think he has it here on youtube.

    Just want to point out something that you might not have noticed:
    On a Fender Jazzmaster, the guitar has 2 circuits, a rhythm and lead. On the lead one, you can switch between the neck and bridge pickup but you can’t do this on the rhythm circuit.
    During the first solo, the guitar is pretty low and muted. This is because he didn’t switch to the lead circuit. Gene leans in at 0:48, trying to switch Jerry to the bridge pickup but this doesn’t work since he is on the rhythm circuit. During the second solo, he switches and that is why the sound is a lot louder and clearer. This is all assumption of course, but I’ve made the mistake of not switching. Still, Jerry does a great job on guitar!

    • @L1V2P9
      @L1V2P9 Před rokem +2

      That makes perfect sense. The tonal differences on the first and second solo are distinct.

    Man I can`t get enough of this vid, I must have watched it a million times already, it`s just incredible... there`s no other way to describe it. The band setup is so simple yet they get this amazing groove going. It`s true rock and roll in every sense of the word played as good as it can get. Maybe the Rock and Roll hall of fame should study this and good before they elect one more idiot who has absolutely nothing to do with R&R like Madonna.

The Beatles heard this and wanted to be just like all the other rockers. Yeah they took it to another level but that was also the technolgy and the drugs got better! My all time fav was always Ray Charles. But even if you listen to the earliest Hank Williams or the Delta blues. It's all just 12bar rythm&blues. I read once Lennon kissed J.L.Lewis foot when they met?R&R

    Hmm...Merrit the last. Looking at my sources it says last Blue Caps # 6 was Johnny Meeks at gtr, Cliff Simmons pno, Grady Owen bs, Clyde Pennington dms and Jackie Kelso sax. Sometime in mid November '58 Gene did a bunk (owing 3 weeks of pay to the group), leaving them stranded in L.A. without transport, instruments or money. The MU withdrew Gene's card and membership and he allegedly fled to Alaska. Meeks later played with the Champs. In '72, bs w/Michael Nesmith and later w/Merle Haggard.

    Lead guitarist was my friend Jerry Lee Merritt. I think he was Gene's last lead guitarist. Punch up Jerry Lee Merrit and he has a show he performed in England in later years on youtube. He wrote 'She She little Sheila' for Gene and I think you can find Gene singing it here somewhere with Jerry playing lead guitar. Jerry lived in Yakima, Wa. for several years and had Ghost Town Recording studio's outside of Yakima for several years where I met and worked with him. He passed away a few years ago.

Gêne fut peiné de la mort de son ami car en tournée ils étaient à l affiche Eddy ou Gène avant ou après pas de rivalité entre eux.

    Any emerging art shows its intrinsic form worth it first appears --later developments will amplify and distort the original -- Chuck Berry / Gene Vincent sprove that in this iconic performance. YT has done some good and some harm to the culture---bringing clip to this "public" is on the good side
    of the their ledger.
